Review: The Sound's second album, From The Lions Mouth, solidified their stature as post-punk legends, despite their lack of mainstream recognition. Produced by Hugh Jones, the album exhibits a fuller sound compared to its predecessor, Jeopardy, while maintaining the band's atmospheric edge. Tracks like 'Winning' confront life's challenges with resilience, setting the tone for the album's introspective yet determined themes. The record effortlessly navigates between dynamic tracks like 'Fatal Flaw' and the atmospheric 'Silent Air,s shows the band's versatility and emotional depth. Adrian Borland's songwriting evokes a sense of loneliness tempered with a glimmer of hope, resonating with listeners even decades later. From The Lions Mouth stands as a timeless masterpiece of the new wave era, offering a poignant exploration of personal struggles and resilience. Despite their lack of commercial success, The Sound's influence on the underground music scene remains undeniable, cementing their place among post-punk icons. The album's reissue, with its spectacular sound quality and subtle inclusion of hidden gems like 'Hothouse,' pays homage to Borland's vision and the band's enduring legacy.

Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: Jeopardy is the debut studio album by English post-punk band the Sound, released in November 1980 via Korova. This being the heyday of the commercial music format, the album was released with the expectation of high chart performance, though it flopped on that front. Despite the anticlimax, Jeopardy went down in time as a dark post-punk paragon, invariably lauded by the small crock of critics who did hear it; this pattern would go onto be matched by the overall critical success of the Sound as a a band. The album's neo-noir, paranoiac hooks and exclamatory vocals make up its core aesthetic, though there is something truly authentic, an 'it' factor, that makes Jeopardy unique unto its own; its rapacious compositions, tight melodies and moments of toothy brightness add to this aura; it's as if they paved a hidden way for the more talented of South London bands of today.

Review: Swing Out Sister's 2004 Where Our Love Grows was a delightful return to their signature retro soul sound, reissued in 2024 to the delight of both devoted fans and new listeners alike. Led by Corinne Drewery's crystalline vocals and Andy Connell's composing prowess, the album offers a lush pop experience reminiscent of the late-sixties/early-seventies era. With tracks like the enchanting 'Love Won't Let You Down,' Swing Out Sister effortlessly blends swing, downtempo, synth-pop, and jazzdance elements, creating a fresh yet familiar sonic landscape. The album exudes warmth and nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary edge, showcasing the band's enduring appeal and ability to craft irresistibly dreamy songs. Where Our Love Grows is a great example to Swing Out Sister's unique presence in the pop music scene, reminding listeners why they've maintained a dedicated following throughout their acclaimed career.

Review: Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads captures the iconic band's live energy and artistic innovation impeccably. Recorded during their 1983 tour, the seminal record blends art rock with new wave and funk influences, delivering a dynamic performance that escalates with each track. Frontman David Byrne's charismatic vocals and eccentric stage presence shine on hits like 'Burning Down the House' and 'Psycho Killer', while the band's tight instrumentation and funky rhythms drive the album's infectious groove. With its seamless flow and inventive arrangements, Stop Making Sense cemented Talking Heads' legacy as pioneers of avant-garde rock.

Review: Rotten Apples chronicles a decade of the band's evolution from their debut album Gish to their final album Machina/The Machines of God. This compilation features quintessential tracks like 'Cherub Rock,' 'Today,' 'Zero,' and 'Stand Inside Your Love,' showcasing Billy Corgan's emotive vocals, powerful guitars, and dynamic drum beats. The album balances heavy, angst-filled anthems with softer, more melodic pieces like 'Tonight, Tonight' and 'Try, Try, Try.' The band's journey is reflected in their music, from their meteoric rise with Siamese Dream to their struggles with personal turmoil. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's heroin overdose and the tragic death of keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin nearly led to the band's collapse, but they rebounded with the critically acclaimed Adore album. Despite disbanding in 2000, this greatest hits collection ensures their legacy remains intact.

Review: Souvlaki is not just an essential shoegaze album but a crucial piece of 90s music, offering an otherworldly, cinematic experience that resonates deeply. It's a timeless classic, places Slowdive's album in indie music history. The band's 1993 sophomore album, is a pinnacle in the shoegaze genre, earning its legendary status with ethereal soundscapes and profound emotional depth. Initially met with skepticism, it reveals itself as a transcendent experience, blending dreamy textures with heartfelt melancholia. The album's production is immaculate, creating a lush, atmospheric sound filled with spacy basslines, synths and fuzzy guitars that envelop the listener in a warm, comforting embrace. Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead's vocals are otherworldly, their harmonies flowing seamlessly within the dense yet airy mix. Thematically, Souvlaki explores themes of falling, drowning, and the sorrow of a breakup, capturing raw emotions with both abstract and straightforward songwriting. Tracks like 'Alison' and 'Machine Gun' showcase abstract lyrics, while songs like '40 Days' and 'Here She Comes' offer simplicity and heartfelt expression and it's all reissued here on translucent red and blue marbled vinyl.

Review: Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Stop Making Sense, this deluxe set of the iconic concert film, directed by Jonathan Demme, captures Talking Heads at their peak, weaving together songs from their six studio albums. The show starts with David Byrne's iconic solo 'Psycho Killer' and gradually expands, adding band members and stellar touring musicians like Bernie Worrell and Lynn Mabry. The re-release features a Dolby Atmos mix and a 12-page booklet with liner notes from the band. Highlights include the energetic 'Burning Down the House' and the classic 'Girlfriend Is Better' - famously, with Byrne's oversized suit. The concert's infectious energy and timeless staging continue to captivate audiences, with band members praising Demme's visionary collaboration. Stop Making Sense remains a quintessential live album, celebrated for its artistic and commercial success, and its recent inclusion in the National Film Registry. This edition revitalises this landmark performance, offering a fresh perpective on Talking Heads' transcendent joy and innovative spirit.

Review: The Sound were a band ahead of their time, and All Fall Down stands as their definitive contribution to their legacy. Despite facing commercial pressures from their label, Adrian Borland and the band stayed true to their artistic vision, delivering a masterpiece of post-punk melancholy and timeless songwriting. The album's ten tracks, marked by a sense of longing and introspection, showcase Borland's poetic lyricism and emotive vocals, from the haunting beauty of 'Monument' to the raw energy of 'Red Paint,' each song leaving a lasting impression. Despite its initial lack of commercial success, All Fall Down remains a hidden gem for those who appreciate music that speaks to the soul.

Review: Fontaines D.C. return with their latest album Romance, their debut on XL Recordings. Recorded shortly after their tour supporting Arctic Monkeys, it seizes on the momentum of 2022's Skinty Fia; Romance marks a colder and starker shift away from their prior work, exuding a chillingly charismatic energy out of the exothermic reactions of booming rock production, free-associative rap-singing and apocalyptic themes. Led by the track 'Starburster', the album's locus of inspiration, which came to be after the band's frontman Grian Chatten suffered a panic attack at London's St. Pancras Station, we find ourselves morbidly over the moon for this grim album-length rumination on the now.

Lost & Found
Review: Lesser Matters is an overlooked gem of Swedish indie-pop. Sweden's rich musical heritage spans various genres and eras, producing globally recognised names like The Cardigans, The Hives and Stina Nordenstam. However, beyond these well-known acts lies a treasure trove of lesser-known gems, including the innovative Wintergatan, the indiepop-to-electropop evolution of Red Sleeping Beauty, and the enchanting dream pop trio, The Radio Dept. Their name originates from a converted petrol station. Founded by Johan Duncanson and joined by Martin Larsson and later Daniel Tjader, the band has seen various line-up changes but consistently produced music that resonates deeply with listeners. Their debut album, blends lo-fi scuzzy guitars, shoegaze, and New Order-esque electropop, creating a sound that, while reminiscent of 1980s post-punk, remains distinctly their own. Tracks like 'Keen On Boys' and 'Why Won't You Talk About It?' exhibit their knack for combining subtle touches with heavenly melodies, while songs like 'Where Damage Isn't Already Done' demonstrate their ability to craft high-energy, emotionally charged music. The album seamlessly incorporates ambient sounds, creating an intimate and atmospheric listening experience.

Review: Oasis' still iconic album Definitely Maybe' stands among the greatest debuts ever. Released in 1994, it now gets a special 30th anniversary reissue that includes all the original tracks as well as a whole load of versions that bring different perspective. This one arrives on strawberries and cream pink and white marbled vinyl and listening back now it's easy to hear why it was such an instant success. It is packed with raw energy and catchy melodies, rock and Britpop influences, and sing song classics like 'Live Forever' and 'Supersonic.' They prove that Noel Gallagher sire knew how to write a hook and Liam was more than able to snarl out the lyrics.

Review: An album that requires little to no introduction, Definitely Maybe was and still is the fastest-ever selling debut in the UK on release, while it's legacy and influence continues to be felt and reappear in sonic corners across the globe. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a deluxe 4xLP reissue, this version comes complete with the album's 2014 remaster, boasting some of their most timeless anthems such as 'Shakermaker', 'Live Forever' and 'Supersonic', as well as the never-before-released and previously discarded original recording sessions from Monnow Valley along with outtakes from Sawmills Studios in Cornwall. While the recording process for Oasis' seminal debut have become the stuff of mired Britpop lore, now fans can finally set their own ears to the controversial, incongruent Dave Batchelor takes, and assess the damage - or delight - for themselves.

Review: It's been a full five years since Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released an original full-length LP. Their last was Ghosteen, the final of three albums to complete the triptych that also included Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016). This makes Wild God something of a special one, marking the first time Cave and company have struck out on an isolable creative limb in over a decade. Unlike the heartfelt grief-stricken groundswells of the previous three albums, Wild God is an avowed 'deeply and joyously infectious' album that marks a return to Cave's reputable, searching, soul-stirring songwriting form; full of the same idiosyncrasies that formed the greatness of latter-day albums like Dig, Lazarus, Dig, albeit with a crazed edge that has perhaps never been heard before.

Review: Coldplay's debut album, Parachutes, receives a well-deserved reissue on vinyl, marking its enduring significance in the band's discography and modern rock history. Originally released in 2000, this album propelled Coldplay to international acclaim with its introspective lyrics, melodic guitar lines, and Chris Martin's emotive vocals. The vinyl reissue maintains the album's original warmth and intimacy while enhancing the listening experience with the format's rich sound quality. Tracks like 'Yellow,' 'Trouble,' and 'Shiver' were instrumental in showing Coldplay's ability to blend alternative rock with heartfelt songwriting, capturing themes of love, longing, and self-discovery. The album's timeless appeal lies in its ability to evoke both nostalgia and contemporary relevance, appealing to longtime fans rediscovering its magic and new listeners with its raw emotional depth. Whether experienced as a journey through youthful introspection or a melodic exploration of human connections, Parachutes remains a poignant debut that solidified Coldplay as a force in the music industry.

Review: Nick Cave & The Bad seeds present their first album in five years, Wild God, following 2019's Ghosteen. A testament to the band's recent spell of happiness, the stylistic and emotional complexity of Wild God is reflective of the complex emotional state a songwriter can find themselves in after a period of pain and tumult. It is indeed a "complicated record" (Cave's own words), with every cameo from David Fridmann to Jonny Greenwood in tow, conjuring up gothic romantic fantasies ("he flew through the city like a prehistoric bird" and "she died in a bedsit in 1993") and candidly heartfelt instrumentation, but with a kooky edge. Though the singles released so far err on the side of convention, our inside intel indicates the presence of an overall rock-genre-bending record elsewhere, owing to a happy period of reconnection and creative synergy experienced by the band.

Review: Simple Reality cements the brief yet impactful legacy of Coventry DIY group Skeet, emerging from a scene of first-generation punks and 2 Tone kids. Formed in 1981 by Gary and Nigel Meffen, Skeet fused tightrope instrumentals with a Roland CR-8000 under projected visuals. After a cassette of their debut performance reached Kay Booth at Inferno Records, she added her own vocals, becoming the frontwoman with her shy delivery and open-diary expressions of social alienation and romantic rejection. With as few as ten shows, Skeet's unnerving minimalism was recorded in a suburban home studio, borrowing equipment from Toby Lyons (The Colourfield) and Jerry Dammers (The Specials). Despite record label interest, the band silently disbanded, leaving their music unheard for nearly four decades. Brief Call resurfaced in the Coventry Music Museum's compendium Alternative Sounds Volume 1, followed by a limited pressing on Chris Long's Almost Unknown imprint in 2023. Simple Reality offers a definitive snapshot of these neurotic post-punks, with newly discovered instrumental multitracks and a live recording of their final performance atop a trailer in a pub beer garden. Mastered by Skeet fanatic Mikey Young, this release adds three new tracks and a more energised take on 'Left On the Shelf's' apathetic electronic-pop.

Review: The The's forthcoming album Ensoulment marks a significant return after nearly 25 years since their last studio release. Written, demoed, and mixed at Studio Cineola in London by mainman Matt Johnson, the album delves into profound themes ranging from love, sex, war and politics to the essence of humanity in the 21st century. Joined by long-standing band members and co-producer Warne Livesey, the album captures the essence of The The's distinctive sound while exploring new territories. Featuring artwork by Matt's late brother Andrew, Ensoulment promises another significant album in the bands discography. With additional performances from notable musicians including Gillian Glover and Terry Edwards, Ensoulment is poised to make a significant impact upon its release.

Review: Slowdive's Pygmalion stands as a profound yet overlooked gem in the band's discography. Released amidst the Britpop and grunge dominance of 1995, it was unfairly dismissed, leading to the band's quiet dissolution. However, if you revisit Pygmalion, it reveals a hauntingly beautiful departure from their earlier shoegaze roots. Now, pressed on vinyl, you can enjoy all the ways this release has stood against time and trends. The album is a minimalist masterpiece, stripping away their trademark wall of noise to reveal ethereal, ambient landscapes. Tracks like the opening epic 'Rutti' set the tone with its subdued guitar work and Neil Halstead's introspective vocals, evoking a sense of contemplative solitude. Throughout the album, space is pivotal - an expansive, cathedral-like atmosphere crafted through restrained instrumentation and atmospheric production. While critics of its time failed to appreciate its subtleties, Pygmalion now stands as a visionary work ahead of its time. Its influence can be heard in subsequent bands like Mogwai and Low, who embraced its meditative qualities and minimalist approach. In today's context, the album's tranquil melodies offer a refuge, resonating with listeners seeking solace amidst chaos. Slowdive's Pygmalion remains a shinning example to their artistic integrity and the enduring power of quiet introspection in music.

Review: First released in 1992, Slowdive's 'Blue Day' compiles the best of the band's earliest outings in the shoegaze genre, bottling them under a singly brittle, blue banner. Just seven tracks adorn its two sides, with the notable self-titled track 'Slowdive' signalling some hint of the band's origins (its wayward drumming getting at an especially happy naivete). Later moments on the record, such as 'Morningrise', are comparatively icier verging on frostbitten, with an overdriven crunch clipping off the most amped edges of the transient hits, suggesting an imperfect medium. On the B, the best of the lot is the slow colic of 'Losing Today', a song palpably packed with a sense of loss, most notably achieved via its soaring, cuspate guitar ogees, albeit ones which just about peek their heads above the shrednoise.

Review: The 40th anniversary deluxe reissue of Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense is a brilliant and complete package that truly is a tribute to this monumental release. Encompassing a double CD + Blu-ray set, it celebrates the enduring impact of Jonathan Demme's iconic concert film soundtrack. David Byrne reflects on how the live energy and audience inspiration infused these performances with a dynamism that often surpasses the studio recordings. The reissue brings this excitement to the forefront with improved mixes and sound quality for a next-level experience. This edition stands out with its Dolby Atmos soundtrack, mixed by Jerry Harrison and E.T. Thorngren, enhancing the auditory experience. Tracks like 'Psycho Killer' and 'Once in a Lifetime' pulsate with renewed vigor, while the inclusion of bonus tracks 'Cities' and 'Big Business/I Zimbra' adds to the appeal. This reissue not only revitalises the original live album but also introduces it to a new generation with unparalleled sound clarity. It's a fitting tribute to Talking Heads' innovative and electrifying performances.
