Review: A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

On the flip is an equally lovely and seductive soul cut for warm afternoons and loved-up dance floors. 'Herzog' is a up-tempo number, with Hutcherson's vibraphone taking a more prominent role. The track features some blistering solos from Hutcherson and his fellow musicians, including pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter. 'Matrix' is a complex and challenging piece that showcases Hutcherson's experimental side. The track features a variety of odd time signatures and dissonant harmonies, but Hutcherson's playing is always melodic and accessible. 'Same Shame' is a more traditional jazz ballad, with Hutcherson's vibraphone playing taking a more subdued role. The track is a showcase for Hutcherson's lyrical and sensitive playing. Review: Before his breakthrough as a solo artist, Luther Vandross was part of the quintet singing group Luther along with Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler, Theresa V. Reed, and Christine Wiltshire. The group recorded two albums with little success. By the time This Close To You was recorded, Luther took the lead in the band with his standout voice and showmanship. A natural frontman, the Luther project closed as he naturally went solo shortly after and signing to Epic records. Luther later on bought the rights to the first two albums and after man years of rumors, they are now reissued. Recorded and released in 1977, the album is blend of soul, disco and ballads. Luther Vandross fans will rejoice at discovering and rediscovering him front some more disco sounds. The album is a great glimpse into his legendary voice in its infancy.

Formed in 1973 by bassist Berthwel Maphumulo, Mac Mathunjwa on organ, Innocent Mathunjwa on drums, Joe Zikhali on guitar, Thema Maboneng was released in 1975, before being almost immediately forgotten. However, a recent rediscovery by diggers and curators Kon & Amir, for their lauded Off The Track Volume Two: Queens compilation, sparked a renewed interest; the South African four-piece shared equal responsibility in writing and arranging these six instrumentals, which are tight and full, and come replete with Hammonds, well-surrounded guitar, and cross-sticking snare hits.

Now welcoming back polyrhythmic electronic music trio Oyobi to the roster with a fresh 7" with two tracks detailed, we're bowled over by this slice of true newness from the lifers. First up is a jubilant buzzer shared with Colombia's finest, pico sound system legend Kaiman Jimenez; 'The Bottle / El Trago' pairs crisp hatwork with two-stepping syncopations and mettalic additions. On the B-side comes an alternate version with Karen Lee Andrews reinterpreting the vox in English, which to us lime-juicers reveals a pensive take on alcoholism. No reason to not get up and dance, though!

Review: The amusingly named Lebanese free improvisation trio A Trio, formed in 2002 by Mazen Kerbaj Sharif Sehnaoui and Raed Yassin, are considered by some to be the oldest and most active free improv group in the Arab world. With such status comes ever-more impetus to release new music; The Binding Third is their first full-length LP since 2014, recorded live at the Sound Disobedience Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2019. Composed of two long-form pieces, we hear the trumpeter, reed player and double bassist respectively make use of extended and prepared techniques, in turn to create dizzying drones, textures, and noises that challenge the conventional roles of their instruments. The music is intense, dynamic, and unpredictable, reflecting the trio's 20+ years of experience and experimentation.

Review: Greg Foat is a London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader and DJ. Foat's latest full-length record displays the musician's lifelong, self-described 'love-hate relationship' with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt's house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg's bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; 'Spider Plant Blues' is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while 'Snake Plant Shuffle' is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

Review: Hot on the heels of their High Tide In The Lowlands LP for Sub Rosa, mesmerising Egyptian psych-rock and free improvisers Dwarfs Of East Agouza release two live recordings on this 7" for Unrock. A-side cut 'Speaking In Tongues' was recorded at Les Ateliers Claus in September 2017, with additional mixing in 2021 from Adam Zidan. On the flip, 'Organism 46-B' was recorded in 2015 in Alexandria, Egypt at a venue called El Cabina. Both sessions capture a band unbound by rockist conventions, sometimes locking into a shapely groove and other times freewheeling through disjointed noise, as is the free improvisation way.

Review: Fresh from the instrumentals wing of contemporary r&b and funk label Colemine comes the new one from Tee See Connection, 'Skyline Chili Churner'. This 7" single procures two formerly-thought-lost recordings made at the basement of the Regent Drives studio in Middletown, Ohio by the band, who consist of Rob Houk on drums, Matt Amburgy on keys and Terry Cole on bass. Seemingly crafted for the express purpose of hip-hop sampling in mind, both tracks are out-and-out funkers, with the B-side's 'Queen City' going for a straight-up, kick-backed 80ish BPM, and the A's titular number laying down an interesting organic funk groove that perhaps only the more seasoned of samplers would have the guts to sift.

Review: UV & Nenor have been on a hot streak of late with great outings on the likes of the Fossils label and now they keep it up with a red hot new drop on the brand new Massa label. This tidy 7" packs a punch with two jams that will work the floor. The first is a slow motion but irresistible dub-disco fusion with squelchy bass and nice colourful, warm, gooey chords with vocals from Ranking Levy.
