On the edgier sounding flip, meanwhile, a female MC spits with impressive ferocity while a lovely warm - and somewhat familiar - analogue-edge loop works its magic. Both are key components for use at different points in the jam, some badly needed heavy weaponry that Donald Trump can't withdraw from service here.

Review: A timeless sample transmission is documented on this latest reissue from From The Voltz, a label whose 7" works specialise in such historicisms. In this case, we've the 1991 single 'They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)' by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, a mythical hip-hop duo from Mount Vernon, New York, whose foundational work in the East Coast rap and DJing scene enabled many later developments. With Rock especially often grouped among the best and most esteemed of rap producers alongside Premier and RZA, 'T.R.O.Y.' is emblematic of the era's distinctive jazz-hop breezes. In turn, the track sampled 'When She Made Me Promise', a relatively obscure Nassau funk group formed in 1969; the sample can be instantly clocked, save for its shrewd pitching down by a tone or two.

Review: Part of a dedicated reissues campaign of much of Japanese funk and prog instrumentalist Masayoshi Takanaka's discography, we're now privy to one of the best records within it: the esteemed, sensitively embellished, and patently instrumental super-opus, All Of Me. The only compilation record to be reissued as part of the series, All Of Me was first put out in the same period as the early treats Brasilian Skies and Jolly Jive, which sealed the deal on Takanaka's (successful) career, and saw to the unstoppably decades-long period of fun that followed, and more or less lasted until 2011. Intro'd superbly, and with a sense of amicable drama, we hear segues into 'Sweet Agnes' and 'Izu Amanatsu Natto Uri'; both are gateway drugs for atmospheric music enjoyers to get into funk, amping up the mood of ease, and building on Takanaka's self-fashioned surf scene adjacency.

'Rated X' is the clear highlight: a blistering, brass-soaked club weapon that's been doing damage on the right dancefloors for years, now finally pressed to 45rpm. Its groove is taut, funky and unfiltered, showing the group's rawest instincts before the crossover polish of later records. Flip it for 'North East South West', a looser, sun-streaked number built on syncopated horns and low-slung rhythm guitar-a snapshot of Kool & the Gang in full livewire form. Both tracks come from a time when the band were stretching funk's parameters, fusing tight musicianship with unrelenting energy. First up is an instrumental rework of a well-known and strident disco delight from the golden 70s era. On the flip, an equally delicious tweak of an equally great original. This first 7" sets a fine standard for what is sure to be a very useful new label for lovers of old and new disco and plenty of sounds in between.

Review: London soul-jazz composer and producer Andrei Nikolsky - formerly of the equal-parts Palace Records favourite The Kanpai Quartet - now broadcasts yet two more heavy-hitters from straight from the label whose logo pulls from the iconographic Crystal Palace Transmitter. 'Botchit & Scarper' is heard far and wide, hijacking the airwaves with what sounds at face value like an unsound moral principle - but on second listen to its slack-shouldered ease, whimsied brass and scaphoid drumming, might function just as well as a principle for free living. Of course, if something's worth doing then it's worth doing "botched", though Nikolsky currently hasn't botched this one. 'Wafty' follows as the blue piano sojourn, replete with plinking ninths and a hiss-hummed rhythms section.

Review: Wax Digits hits release number five with a tight and tidy two-tracker from the late veteran Robert Ouimet who passed a couple of years ago. Before then he cooked up these gems with his pal and production partner Dave Godin. They are being released as a tribute to the memory of Ouimet and a fine one they are too. 'Plenty' has a raw groove and big chords with jangling guitars adding hints of melancholy that counter the big stabs. Soulful vocals are a great finishing touch then 'Funky Together' is more loose and strident with big horns leading the way under psyched-out chords. Two quality party starters.

Review: A specialist of short, exquisite instrumental funk records, Masayoshi Takanaka laid this sweet, yearning, yachtbound record down in 1979, following the previous year's Latin sojourn, Brasilian Skies. This slice of jollity sacrifices much of Takanaka's regional focus, and instead brings seven rather more generally awesome, mostly instru-prog-funk tunes to the fore (even though 'Radio Rio' still alludes to Brazil's home city, where Takanaka spent much time honing the samba and bossa nova influences that informed his craft, as well as performing). Lead tune 'Blue Lagoon' is noted for catapulting Takanaka's career after it was taken up by Pioneer for a TV ad; ambient heads would likely contest this history, arguing that the later ambient cut 'Sango-sho No Yousei' is the star tune, and the one that should've won him the limelight.

Review: Favorite Records' reggae-minded offshoot Stix has been serving up periodic collections of disco-reggae cover versions for the best part of a decade, most created by a core crew that includes Maggy Tatcher, Soul Sugar (AKA organ maestro Booker Gee) and Mato. They all return for volume six, a collection curated by French digger Charles Maurice, alongside new recruit Mystic Jungle, who kicks things off with a sublime take on Roy Ayers' 'The Memory' with vocalist Roxanne. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, with our favourites including Soul Sugar's reggae/jazz-fusion interpretation of Ramsay Lewis's 'Sun Goddess', Taggy Matcher's hard, dub-wise flip of Cymande gem 'The Message', the same artist's roots style shuffle through Bee Gees' fave 'Stayin' Alive', and Matos' lovers rock inspired cover of Isley Brothers' loved-up classic 'Between The Sheets'.

Review: Super Spicy is keeping up a busy release rate, but more impressively, is also keeping the quality levels nice and high. Its eighth dish kicks off with an irresistible hors d'oeuvre in the form of Monsieur Van Pratt's big piano jam 'Gotta Get Down', which is pure floor-filling tackle. Voyager 909's 'Shake' blends big strings, soulful vocals and hip-swig in claps with a down and dirty bassline. There is more heads up disco-funk from Disco 86, sexier sounds from the sultry disco bomb that is 'Funktastic Fantastic' and Edson Agiss layers up horns, guitar licks and squealing Hammond organs on 'Comme Ci, Comme Ca.' Rob Castillo sees things out with Got To Be Slick,' an irresistibly soulful and flute-laced house roller with hints of Americana in the guitar riffs buried deep in the mix.

Review: Dayton, Ohio's Record Player may have only released one private press 7" in 1979, but their story runs far deeper. Led by Charles Jackson, the band recorded a full suite of material that until now remained locked away, the product of a promising trajectory that was cut short before a major label deal could land. Excavated and restored by Now-Again, these tracks reveal a group entirely in step with the deep disco and street-level funk that defined late-70s Midwest soul. 'Free Your Mind' sets the tone: optimistic, rhythmically tight, and alive with the democratic spirit of funk's second wave. Cuts like 'Your Fantasy' and 'Backup N Funktown' showcase punchy horn charts and low-slung grooves, while 'Magic' and 'Bump-a-rump Ability' lean more playfully into disco and boogie. With bonus tracks like 'Sweetest Thing' and 'Go' rounding out the set, this is a joyous, overdue resurrection of a band that could've-and maybe should've-been. For fans of Edge of Daybreak, Split Decision Band and those tireless Dayton reels, this one's gold.

Review: The debut album from Mexican duo Destino Sonido, namely electronic music veteran Juan Soto and rising vocal talent Labibe, mixes up disco swagger, upright funk attitude, synthpop flavours and just the tastiest smidge of pop instinct. 'Seduccion Galactica' has more than a touch of Vince Clarke's magic but rich simplicity about it, while closing tune 'Oscuridad' (You Man remix) adds an epic feel to proceedings, while simultaneously keeping them shiny and approachable. Dan Solo makes two appearances, Krofon pops in to lend a hand on 'Amandote' and Monsieur Von Pratt remixes 'Playa, Sol Y Amor' into a robo-disco banger. Following nobody's rules, it's an awful lots of fun from start to finish.

Via Ozileka and Africa Seven, Francis Bebey Remixed invites four contemporary heads to tinker with the legacy of the late Cameroonian pioneer. Long before it was cool, Bebey folded traditional West African music into folk, funk, jazz and drum machines, shaping a sound that echoed far beyond his lifetime. Now A7 Edits hands the reels to Psychemagik, Turbotito, Voilaaa and Red Axes, whose rerubs range from dubbed-out psych to Afro-disco and woozy house. It’s less a greatest-hits package, more a respectful twist on classics by producers with deep crates and good ears; only one extra mix from Josh Ludlow lands digital-only, but the rest is locked to wax.

Review: First out in 1975 on Nippon Columbia, Funky Stuff stamped the seal on Jiro Inagaki's jazz rock period - and what a finale. With pianist Hiromasa Suzuki handling writing and arrangement, the album leans hard into punchy psych, fuzzwacked guitar, rubbery bass, brass stabs and whip-tight drums; Suzuki conducts things sharply and melodically, steering Soul Media into tighter territory. Inagaki, who'd previously led The Soul Mates and His Black Rhythm Machine, praised Suzuki's knack for bold ideas and memorable phrasing, a quality clearly running through this set. The sound is tight and bright; less freeform jam, more focused funk workout, catching 70s Japanese jazz as it shimmies in Cuban motion toward the dancefloor.
