Ceasefire
Ceasefire (coloured vinyl 12" (record comes in random colours, we cannot guarantee which one you will receive))
Cat: BB 008. Rel: 26 Jul 24
Review: In the ongoing Palestinian humanitarian crisis, more and more artists are taking a stance against perceived injustices in the war agaist Hammas. Following Annie Lennox's "Artists for ceasefire. Peace" outcry at the Grammys in January, coming at the end of a heartwrenching rendition of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' in memoriam of Sinead O'Connor, Fontaines DC is using their platform to raise funds for Medecins Sans Frontieres. 'Ceasefire' is a collaborative EP with trip-hop collective Massive Attack and progressive hip-hop group Young Fathers. Each group is donating their music into one compilation, where 100% of the profits are being donated to the non-profit humanitarian organisation. The 12" comes in one of 4 colour combinations, where the disc and two contrasting colours on the cover (designed by Massive Attack's 3D) sport one of the bold colours of the Palestinian flag.

Review: You can never really pin down what the excellent Emotional Repose label does and that is exactly the sinking behind the title of its superb All Trades show on NTS. The sheer eclecticism of that show is now reflected in this new two-part compilation, also called All Trades, which offers up little morsels of what they do, something like a sonic tasting menu at a fancy restaurant. There is chugging electronic dub from Apiento & Tepper, industrial clatter from Black Bones, cosmic ambient breakbeat from Paperclip Minimiser and blissed out dub from Yamila & SoFa Elsewhere amongst many more highlights.

Review: Pye Corner Audio shows off his love of acid on the first of two EPs for Emotional Response that drop simultaneously. This first one is his debut on the label and comes with a gorgeous cover that perfectly encapsulates the sounds within. 'Dust Acid' is a sparse cut with dusty drums and meandering basslines that slowly sink you in, then 'Magnetic Acid Two,' which like all of these was recorded live, is another expertly reduced brew of murkiness with plenty of frayed edges and vintage analog sounds. 'Wanna Show U Acid' is a late-night acid dream and 'Magnetic Acid Four' shuts down slightly more bite. Four timeless backroom cuts, make no mistake.

Review: Emotional Response returns with a second volume of its All Trades compilation which is named after its own NTS show. It is just as vast both in terms of style but also the eras it spans with a mix of dub, new wave, slow motion electronics and plenty in between. Tolouse Low Trax kicks off with the filthy dirty and seriously heavy dub glitch of 'Ossia' to provide an early highlight before the likes of Al Wootton get percussive and tribal with 'Altai' and HLM38 channels some African Head Charge on another devastating dub cut. Later on, London's Good Block brings a little more light and sunshine with their lovely 'Strong Relax.'

Review: The debut Ghost Dubs album emerges on The Bug's Pressure label as the artist, also known as Michael Fiedler and Jah Schulz, follows up two prior experimental dub LPs put out via his 'Dub Over Science' series, the title of which tells you all there is to know about his approach to music production. Dub was never an entirely empirical process: though the archetypal dubbing engineer was historically often deemed just that - an "engineer" - this terminology is ironic since intuition, or "vibesmanship", is also essential to the craft. Bringing twelve zygomatic arse-zappers to our left and right canals (and, in the bass region, to our bodies), Ghost Dubs homages the blueprint drafted by the infamous Chain Reaction label, whose pioneering works laid the ground for all low-reg, factoryscape experimental dub records to follow. Best of this bunch are the least rhythmically deadlocked, 'Soul Craft' standing out in its use of freeform shark-caged resonances, and 'True To Life' going steady but confidently on the triplets and alien gurgles.

Review: Wolfgang Voigt's seminal project Gas returns with a definitive reissue of its eponymous debut album, originally released in 1996 on Mille Plateaux and now presented anew by Kompakt on a lavish 3x12 vinyl set. This release marks a long-awaited return to the pure essence of Gas, as initially envisioned by Voigt. Before this full-length debut, hints of Gas's distinctive sound surfaced through early EPs and compilation tracks, showcasing Voigt's knack for ambient electronic landscapes. Gas unfolds across six expansive, untitled tracks that drift seamlessly, each a mesmerising journey of ethereal loops and rhythmic undercurrents. Voices from distant classical motifs echo faintly, adding to the album's enigmatic allure. While later albums like Zauberberg and Konigsforst would refine and deepen the Gas aesthetic, this debut stands out for its airy, evocative mood and its more fluid, exploratory nature. It captures Gas at a moment of artistic genesis, where Voigt's sonic vision begins to crystallise amidst dreamlike textures and subtle rhythmic structures. Gas, in its reissued form, not only revisits a pivotal moment in electronic music history but also serves as a testament to Voigt's enduring influence and avant-garde spirit, setting the stage for its legendary successors.

Review: As the title suggests, Broadcast have collected all their demo recordings made between 2000 and 2006 and compiled them onto a single 14-track record. But that's not the main piece of news: sadly, this one marks the end of releasing from the band, tying the bow on an game-changing career to say the least. Many of these tender tidbits were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon; it's an impressive flex to be able to flaunt your one-offs and pack them onto a single recorded finale. What's more, the connotations aroused by form - demos - as well as the sonic content of these gems plays nicely up to Broadcast's now well-established aesthetic, which is one for the ages, to be sure. The album also includes two songs discovered by James after bandmate Trish's passing: 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' which was her response to Broadcast's 2006 'Let's Write A Song' project, where fans were asked to submit lyrics on a postcard which would then be worked into a finished song.

Review: Balmat proudly present their 11th release with a new record from Polish artist Bartosz Kruczynski, whose minimalist atmospheric sensibility has caused the label to ease their worries over being dubbed an 'ambient' label, at least for the time being. Better known by his Rhythm Section-releasing house alias Earth Trax, Kruczynski takes a stark turn here, presenting a fierce yet fine selection of acidic ambient vignettes. On Dreams & Whispers, the pH scale is piquant without verging on completely corrosive; each ambient free association here - called either a 'Dream' or a 'Whisper' - is able to melt some psychic substrate without totally eviscerating or untying others. This is revelatory, yet not overthought ambient music, designed to treat, yet not brute-force-expose, the unconscious wishes behind our dream-distortions.

Review: With 'Mirage', French cosmic dance vendors Intervision provide producer Saphilaeum a stellar welcome. The Georgian producer flexes his texturised, rainforested muscles on this new six-tracker, bringing a pellucid, bleary-eyed, temperate, coastal sonic vision to limited aquablue vinyl here. Riffing off the humidities of an imagined jungle found in the middle of pelagic nowhere, the likes of 'Guecko & Koala' and 'Ooga Booga' find a sense of joy and humour in the many effervescings of acoustic ritual dances and amplified synthetic sound; their fantastically primal aura let us seep into the surrounding thicket, as mind and body unrecognisably blur. By the closing off of 'Natural High', we sound to have emerged, rejuvenated, from a full, voracious, aloe vera-soaked vamp-dance.

Review: At this point in his career, it seems that classically trained pianist come electronica visionary Jon Hopkins can do no wrong. Whether we're thinking of his unmistakable all-time great LP Immunity, or his more recent inward-bound journeys into a trippy serial panacea, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, the musician, in Domino's own words, is an established auteur, capable of casting a whole range of dark sonorous arts perhaps only the most storied audio wizards can cast. His latest record, Ritual, is the latest utterance to escape the Hopkins grimoire; staying true to the adage that a real magician simply does not reveal their secrets, Hopkins is deliberately cryptic about the meaning of Ritual, except for the fact that his music-making process is itself a ritual. Humbly, he insists "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing". Well, from the various sublime, epiphanic, master-warlock's evocations heard across this record, it sure doesn't sound like it!

Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Review: With Ritual, electronica mastermind Jon Hopkins follows up his storied meditation-aid LP, Music For Psychedelic Therapy, for a return to the sublime uplifts that characterised his establishing sound. Somehow, Hopkins says of his latest full-length, "I have no idea what I'm doing when I'm composing. I don't know where it's coming from, and I don't know where it's going, nor does it seem to matter. I just know when it is finished." Such remarkable humility sits in in stark contrast to the deep grandeur of the record, which refreshingly seems to have been made without overconscious intent; Hopkins' describes his approach to the album as a simple matter of creation, without too much second-guessing or reasoning after the fact. This would seem to counteract Psychedelic Therapy's interest in self-reflection and personal enlightenment; Ritual, as we glean from the title, is more action-oriented, pursuing the many epic pilgrimages and blue beyonds that Hopkins was first known to have embarked upon.

Review: Jon Hopkins' forthcoming album Ritual spans 41 minutes of uninterrupted sonic exploration, drawing inspiration from ceremony, spiritual liberation and the hero's journey and creating a dense and immersive soundscape that showcases his mastery of depth and contrast. Collaborating with long-term partners like Vylana, 7RAYS, and Ishq, as well as newcomers like Clark and Emma Smith, Hopkins weaves together cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming, and transcendent melodies to craft a sonic experience that is both emotionally and sonically weight. Ritual sees Hopkins' evolution as an artist, building upon themes explored throughout his 22-year career while venturing into new sonic territories. The album's first single, 'Ritual(evocation),' offers a tantalising glimpse into this expansive sonic landscape, with its hypnotic rhythms and darkened soundscapes drawing listeners into a world of introspection and catharsis. With its warm, live feel and seamless blend of softness and intensity, Ritual promises to be a transformative listening experience for fans of electronic music and beyond.

Review: The late SOPHIE Xeon shaped modern pop and experimental music with her Grammy-nominated 'Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' and 'PRODUCT' series in the mid-to-late 2010s, working alongside A.G. Cook and PC Music to create some of the most futuristic and bubbly music. Xeon produced for Vince Staples, Madonna and Charli XCX before her sudden passing in January 2021, she is known for her unique, textural production style that has even been featured in McDonald's adverts (of all places). Her first posthumous project has been lovingly brought to fruition by her family estate run by her brother, handpicking songs he says she would've wanted to be released that were nearly finished. The first track 'Reason Why', featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, has long been a fan favourite since live performances and leaked demos hit SoundCloud over four years ago. It's a spacious and squeaky clean dance track, one of many examples SOPHIE produced, showcasing what pop's future could look like.

Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine & An Umbrella
Review: Nurse With Wound's debut album, Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine & An Umbrella, is perhaps best known for several reasons. One, that it established the sound of Stephen Stapleton's iconically, dingily perverse artistic universe; and two, that it was among the first records to be released alongside an 'inspirations list'; the infamous Nurse With Wound List laid the groundwork, perhaps, for the many "influences mixes" and other candid confessions of stylistic borrowing that would later emerge in experimental / avant-garde music circles. The record itself is characteristically turgid, janky, full of prepared instrumental scrapes, shackle-rattlings and bumps in the night; the least we could expect from an album dedicated to Luigi Russolo, the Italian Futurist and contested fascist whose early experimental musical instruments syncretised ideology with sound (for better or worse).

Review: Broadcast's Collected Demos collections span era-defining moments that dot the band's career. One of several new demo compilations to mark the band's sad closing knell, Distant Call is one such record, and comprises fourteen demos that were worked into finished productions appearing on Haha Sound, Tender Buttons and The Future Crayon. Though most of these are tenderer versions of these songs of yore, two cuts here - 'Come Back To Me' and 'Please Call To Book' - are formerly unheard originals, both of whose songwriting is credited to the band's own Trish Keenan, discovered shortly after her passing in 2011. Full of dusty deuteragonies and gothic, tape-hued waltzes, this is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime, stripped back snapshot of the band's cutting room floor.

Review: Empire Of The Sun is set to mark a new chapter with their fourth album, Ask That God. This album signifies a significant evolution, embracing an infectious new sound while maintaining their roots. Following the recent single 'Changes,' the band has released 'Music On The Radio,' a breezy indietronica track that encapsulates their signature blissful electronica. Luke Steele's shimmering vocals blend seamlessly with a throbbing, elastic beat, creating catchy effect. Steele describes the song as a teenage rebellion against imaginary emotions, driven by Nick Littlemore's unique lyrical touch. The hypnotic groove of the bass is irresistible, showing the duo's talent for melodies and hooks. Ask That God represents a profound shift for the band, reflecting their journey and growth. This album promises to be a transcendent experience for fans, reaffirming Empire Of The Sun's innovative spirit.

Review: Jenova 7's Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is an excellent blend of trip hop nostalgia and futuristic soundscapes. Across 16 tracks, he takes listeners on a journey through time and space, evoking the essence of '90s trip hop while exploring uncharted sonic territories. Standout tracks like 'The Future 1995,' 'My Zero G Love,' and 'Downtown Lost In The City Of Lizards' show Jenova 7's creativity of genre-blending and atmospheric storytelling. Jenova 7's ability to fuse moody, jazz-inflected samples with grooves that draw the listener in makes this album a cinematic journey through sound. Lost Sci-Fi Movie Themes is a unique album for fans of trip hop in particular and those simply looking for a transformative musical experience.

The 2LP has been constructed and mastered by her "most cherished collaborators" and containes an album of tracks that were "near completion" according to the family. Xeon made waves in the music scene following her PRODUCT series, a completely fresh and unique style of irreplaceable production rich with wet bass and handcrafted synths that has influenced everyone from Flume, Arca, Madonna and FKA Twigs. 'Reason Why', the lead single, is a perfect example of the vision for pop music SOPHIE had - bubbly, polished to a mirror sheen and infectiously danceable.

Review: Japanese vibraphonist and marimba player Masayoshi Fujita returns with Migratory, his masterful new solo album, on which his sonic explorations into the unknown continue. Forming part of a nascent uptick of albums exploring ideas of freedom in movement and displacement, Fujita's record sonically documents and expresses a return to his native Japan with his wife and three children, fulfilling his lifelong dream of living and composing music in the midst of nature after remaining resident in Berlin for 13 years. After this move, Fujita set about converting an old kindergarten into a music studio, and, perhaps adjoining his own experience of raising children, found himself composing Migratory in part through the dialogue formed of the ideaistic relationship of early childhood, movement and settling. Selectively mixing bird ambience, electronics and, of course, his patented vibraphone, Fujita's record is a melancholic but no less arresting one.

Review: First released in 2018, The Light Is Leaving Us All is one of Current 93's (David Tibet's) most up-to-date explorations in sound, and is noted by the artist himself as one of his most recent favourites. An expansive collaborative cluster of entities, some human and others perhaps not, assisted Tibet in the making of this morbid neofolk opus, which, when not indulging droning guitarscapes and dulcimer twinkles, humours a spoken word and found sound palette, constructing a conniving persona that perhaps farcically laments the loss of suburban niceties (clues in the track titles like 'The Birds Are Sweetly Singing', 'The Policeman Is Dead', 'The Postman Is Singing', 'The Milkmaid Sings' and 'A Thousand Witches' portray a macabre picture of the dead underside of sleepy hometown life). When Tibet sings, he brings a knowingly resigned tone to the record, sounding almost genderless in his evocation of experience and loss of domestic innocence.

Review: Embarking on a series of new Current 93 reissues via his own label Cashen's Gap, David Tibet here reminisces on the very second LP to be released under the moniker, Dogs Blood Rising. Said to have been "reeling in the weeks - which felt like years - after my first Current 93 album, I had started on the difficult second album" (Dogs Blood Rising) after "having been asked to appear on both Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test 93 times in the same week". Cult mythologising aside, this five-track sonic gorgonesquerie is a fantastic primer in early occult industrial music, leading on the iconoclastic canto 'Christus Christus' and ending on the chamber-effected monologue 'St. Peters Keys All Bloody'. The songs cast implicit scorn on the popular imaginaria that insist that heaven and hell are divided; Tibet is keen to collapse them into one, devising a new sonic eschatology all unto his own.

Review: Yet another reissue to come out via David Tibet's current reissues occupation Cashen's Gap is the incredible eleventh Current 93 record Swastikas For Noddy. Playing up recurrent motifs of ruination and spoiling - always present in Tibet's music since early - every facet of this record seems to find an impertinent glee in juxtaposing the beautiful with the ominous, the dainty with the dearth. Perhaps it's a cursed record, as its intent spelt doom from the get-go: it first ran into copyright trouble after its title provoked the ire of writer Enid Blyton, who certainly did not appreciate the apparent Nazification of her beloved character. But over that hump came the real backstory: Tibet said, "I took a load of acid on the top of the house where Rose McDowall was living and I had a vision of Noddy crucified in the sky and it really impressed me...", which led to a crazed but short-lived Noddy consumer fanaticism on the artist's part. This record was of course born of that period of Noddy thrall; it nonetheless mystifies the gaudy children's character and toy's allure, couching it in bewitching pagan folk monodies and dastardly end-of-times industrial-hell crescendos. Perhaps when we forget Noddy, we forget the nation. Remastered by The Bricoleur at Bladud Flies!, and with the original artwork refreshed and reborn by Rob Hopeye, this 12" vinyl picture-disc comes in a full-colour die-cut sleeve, which is printed on both the outside and inside.

Review: Toby Marks aka. Banco De Gaia is one of the foremost producers to ever operate in the crossover of breakbeat and 'tribal'. That pairing of associations might seem naff to some music fans now, but no performative dismissal on the grounds of any connotative problematic can ever detract from the inpourings of ardour and talent gone into his albums. Trauma is marks Marks' first record in nearly ten years, following on from The 9th Of Nine Hearts, and hears the esteemed trance-gressor continue to eke a sound rooted in the oblique, yet inspirationally powerful themes of global sufferance and idealism, both of which find their expression in the weighty, acidic dreamworlds of 'War' and 'The Dying Light', which are complex in mood and express a real ambivalence through their concurrent use of deep stereo padwork and poignant vocal sampleage. Far from indulging a mood of pure resignation, Marks crafts a dance-musical dreamworld that demands analysis, through which Trauma refers not to a wound, but to a dream.

Review: Nurse With Wound's notorious two-part Merzbild Schwet LP comes reissued by Rotorelief (now complete with a new insert, with a new visual design by the artist, as well as an exclusive, individual hand-inked cover image). One of by this point countless records in the NWW repertoire, Merzbild Schwet did not appear as such at the time, manifesting as their third record and first released in 1980. Infamous for its creation out of disagreements between mastermind Steven Stapleton and personnel, Merzbild Schwet nevertheless went on to be hailed as the "first great Nurse With Wound record" by the latter (Heman Pathak and John Fothergill) for that very reason. With its two constitutive musical pieces named after two closely interlinked art movements, Dada and Futurism, the industrial outfit here crafted some of their first and most enduring chamber pop music, with unknown, baroque vocals and trembling, eavesdropped whispers laid either over silences or atonal industri-blues throughout.
