Density Wave
Density Wave (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PLANT43 001. Rel: 15 Jun 20
  1. Density Wave
  2. Dream Archive
  3. 21 Winters
Review: The first release on Emile Facey's Plant43 Recordings sets the tone for his new label with a showcase of his trademark shimmering, melodic electro. The three tracks take the listener through an array of deeply emotional soundscapes while keeping the electro-funk beats to the fore, another outstanding display of a unique style nurtured through over 20 years of production. A co-founder of London's Bleep43 crew, Facey has been promoting underground electro and techno since the late 90's. As a producer he's been releasing records since 2005 with a string of releases on respected scene favourites such as Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk, Semantica, Shipwrec and Cultivated Electronics, among others. He has played live alongside DJ Stingray, ERP/Convextion, Surgeon, Legowelt, DJ Overdose, Urban Tribe, I.F., Svreca, Datassette among many others.

Review: The second release in the exit planet earth compilation vinyl series features four exclusive tracks designed for space travel, including the first ever collaboration between Keith Tucker of Aux 88 and Carl Finlow. The resulting track 'Coder' is an electro masterpiece. The more established electro pairing of Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code hit heavy with 'Red Cell' while Voitmann brings the bass to space with 'Subtopia'. The record is rounded off beautifully by Cignol with Detroit infused string sections and harmonies on his '51D' track.

Review: Back once again we have the long anticipated 2nd release from Hearlucinate . Based around a party in London where each guest DJ is asked to collaborate on an EP with the Hearlucinogenic host and resident Tristan da Cunha . This time round we have the uber talented Ron Obvious laying down two killer cuts aimed straight at the dance floor . UK attitude mixes with New Jersey style organs , breaks , bass and a bad ass beats... Giving us two tracks that have an old school flavour but super fresh with a modern aesthetic. Once again showcasing his ability to produce timeless , tasteful grooves that make you move . Next up is TdC with his bass driven hypnotic hybrid sound . Picking up where from the last ep with heavy bottom end , driving beats , a spooky groove , all topped off with a dash of sleaze. To Finish the EP we welcome back Freakenstein with his electro funk monster taking no booty prisoner. Dance floor dynamite as always from this exciting new artist . As always it comes dressed to impress with heavy weight 180g vinyl and artwork from the workshop of Atelier Superplus.

Evoked Potentials 3/3
Cat: SEM 0162019.
  1. Repose
  2. Sensory Process (Plant43 remix)
Review: Second time around for the third and final part of electro hero Gerard 'ERP' Hanson's "Evoked Potentials" series, which first hit stores way back in 2011. A-side "Repose" is (quite literally) classic ERP, with Hanson peppering Egyptian Lover style drums and funky synth-bass with chiming lead lines, starburst chords and deep space chords. It's tuneful and picturesque, but will also have you on your feet and throwing shapes in no time at all. Over on the flip, Plant43 (London electro veteran Emile Facey) turns in a very Drexciyan take on "Sensory Process", in the process wrapping Hanson's bittersweet strings and 33rd century electronic motifs around a suitably deep sea electro rhythm.

Red Axes (LP + postcard)
Cat: DE 275.
Review: 2020 marks the tenth of collaboration for Red Axes, the Tel Aviv-based duo of Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi. Informed by post-punk, new wave, and a plethora of club sounds old and new, they have cleaved a singular path with their hefty discography. To celebrate their anniversary, they reunite with Dark Entries for an eponymous 11 track LP brimming with jagged guitars, spacy arpeggios, and hypnotic vocals. Although Sadovnik and Arzi have previously released LPs on I'm A Cliche and Garzen Records, Red Axes is their first effort written and conceived of as an album-length listening experience. This work flows effortlessly through a variety of stylistic detours, highlighting their ears as both keen listeners and skilled DJs. Opener 'They Game' is a grooving number that unifies the psychedelia of cosmic disco with the early 90s 'baggy' sound. The energy mounts further with "Shelera", a guitar-driven acidic banger, and "Sticks and Stones", a certifiable club hit fueled by sassy vocals courtesy of Adi Bronicki. Launching Side B is "Break the Limit", an EBM-laced number that wouldn't sound out of place on a Razormaid compilation. The following tracks wax moodier, with "Brotherhood (Of the Misunderstanding)" touching on darkwave territory. "Udibaby" and "Arpman" close out the album with their respectively dense and sparse takes on kosmische lysergia. Red Axes was mixed by Steve Dub and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The album's artwork starkly depicts the project's name in blood-red smear. Also included is a postcard with full credits and album art. It's rare one finds an album that so casually challenges classification while still being firmly rooted on the dancefloor.

Review: Andy Jaggers (aka ADJ) is a name that has been synonymous with the underground electro scene since the mid-nineties.

Andy is one of the understated contributors to the sound; in one dimension pushing the music of others in running one of the best record shops London has had to offer (IQ) as well as forming his sonic niche across his labels and own productions.

Andy released his early works as 3 Elements on his own label Analogique, delivering 4 now very hard to find records in between '95 and '96. Unfortunately for us here at knoe towers the source DATs have been lost to the perils of studio moves. Later he would set up Pyramid Transmissions with Pathic to release their own productions and those of likeminded individuals pushing the envelope of the electro sound outside the normally accepted boundaries. Electro as a genre has always sounded like the future however Andy manages to take it into the fifth dimension and beyond, overlaying IDM techniques and soundscapes onto the solid backbone of Detroit electro.

For Those That Knoe has worked extensively with Andy to put together a deliciously cohesive eight-track compilation of his works spanning the more recent period of his production career. The LP includes Pyramid Transmission vinyl favorites, cuts only previously available on his digital albums and some pieces released for the very first time.

Review: Following release on Furthur Electronix, Computer Controlled, AC Records, Lunar Disko, Seagrave, Alphabet Set & more, Irish producer Cignol makes his debut outing on 20/20 Vision with 'Past Futures'. The four track EP serves up potent break beat electro with razor-sharp acid tinges, deep baselines and atmospheric synths.

Cignol's ability to craft emotive soundscapes is exemplified on the opener 'Past Futures' with deep electro groove 'Virtual Array' following up on the A-Side. On the B-side 'Gantm' & 'Lessoned By Lessons' lift the tone into lighter spaces whilst still unfolding emotive melodies and driving break beat grooves.

  4. Last Year's Model
Review: Ed DMX rarely drops the ball, so you'll be unsurprised to find that the veteran producer's latest EP contains another four first-rate workouts. Opener "Panic Stations" is clanking and other-worldly, with the Bedford-born studio don peppering a hybrid electro/acid house beat with clonk-style stabs and a funk-fuelled analogue bassline, while "Going Back" is a more melodic, turn-of-the-90s style affair rich in spacey electronic motifs, deep space chords and funky acid bass. Over on side B "Alkane" sounds like Larry Heard making hard-wired 1980s electrofunk, while "Last Year's Model" is a simply gorgeous drift through 1980s deep house with plenty of Kraftwerkian synthesizer motifs to please the electro aficionados.

Review: Expert in trippy joints and knee-buckling bounce, OZ-based producer Reptant is back with a vengeance after an array of choice outings on the likes of Salt Mines, Planet Euphorique and Craigie Knowes. No warm-up lap needed, 'Phasic Reflex' may start as a tycho-esque daydream, what's bred in the bone comes out in the flesh. A pure adrenaline rush of vogue-ing 303, hi-voltage electro and intricate drum programming, this one has dancefloor ripper written all over it.
Keeping the tension up to hazardous levels, 'MS Plenty' zones out to a Detroit-style elixir of arpeggiated seesaws and pong-indebted, body-jacking pep. As its title suggests - or not, the B-side opener 'A Realist's Realistic Reality' clearly lies closer to a cyphered Dick-ian parallel world full of binary bleepin' and swirlin', post-kosmische infused riffs and tentacular Arpanet-style modularity, which Roza Terenzi alters into a lo-pressure dub expedition - better tasted at sunrise, feet buried deep in the sand and your hazy mind draped in the cosy folds of a cheerful seaside sloth with friends.

Here they return with their first outing of 2020 - a sweaty and forthright affair that maintains a strong dancefloor focus throughout. The A-side is all about "Overbridge", an unflinchingly weighty and mind-mangling affair in the style of fellow Klakson artist Dexter that's given a buzzing, all-action, alien techno-funk makeover by Fastograph. Over on side B, the Italian twosome goes a little deeper on the bubbly, spacey and energetic "The Naus Investigation", before reaching for psychedelic acid lines, ghostly Drexciya style chords and bustling beats on paranoid closing cut "Decanaus".

On this new various artists 12", White Mane Horse and Deputy Bender fire off sleek and sinister rhythms while UHU has a little tongue in cheek fun behind the veil of icy whispered vocals and nervy bleeps on "No Body Knows Electro". Theory Of Noise sound taut and robotic, Olloy keeps things plush but noirish, Rnbws fires off a high-definition sound and Theory Of Noise returns for the simply brilliant "Mission".

Now he comes to Infiltrate with some electro-wired sure shots that keep the tempo up, the synth work bold and the moods intense. "Trauma" rides on rich pads and a harmonious monosynth lead, while "Phobia" takes things freakier with some rapid fire percussion and icy stabs. "Thug Life" keeps the pressure up on the flip, albeit with some dubby melodic flex to temper the rabid beats. "Conflict" completes the set with deep-diving top lines and a decidedly nasty low end squelch you could lose your shoes in.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Hitting its stride under the umbrella of Burnski's Constant Sound label, Infiltrate serves up round two from lesser-known talent Pakzad. The electro vibes are dark and deadly on this record, leading in with the murky, dubbed out delights of "Slave" before swerving into the crisp machine funk workout "Rebelion." The Infiltrate remix of "Tension" opens up the B-side with some sinister synth pulses strafing across the low mids and a constant unease courtesy of the sustained strings, contrasting the more playful programming of Pakzad's original. This is classy, hyper modern electro that taps into the current wave of the genre perfectly.

Review: EYA Records marks its 10th release with a solo work from French producer Master Flashhh. The opening track "Too Big to fail" is stripped back yet energetic, driven by 909 drums, atmospheric pads and drifting vocals.A2 "Beat Boxxx" is catchy electro workout with vocal samples from a Dominican Republic radio and 303 acid lines. On the B side "Boulevard Mystere' is an ode to Boulevard Barbes in Paris, the track is characterised by haunting melodies and a warm analogue bass.B2 is a dreamy and evocative number with the use of Juno 106 spacey sounds and 808 drum patterns.Enigma EP is contemplative, audacious and imaginative.
