Tectonic Sound Part 2
Cat: TECLP 0272. Rel: 18 Jul 25
Beatrice M - "Poison"
Om Unit - "Strobes (The Warning)"
FJAAK & J Manuel - "Binder"
Cocktail Party Effect - "Smiling Worm"
Review: Pinch's Bristol-based Tectonic stable marks a new chapter with Tectonic Sound, a six-part, 24-track vinyl series, discomancing an unknowable but part steerable future while also leaning on firmly implanted roots. Each 12" pairs longtime affiliates like Peverelist, RSD, Kahn & Neek and Om Unit with a sharp cast of first-timers, among them Flora Yin-Wong, Re:ni, Sicaria, Yushh and Beatrice M. What emerges is a restless sweep through low-end electronics that flirt with dub, techno, soundsystem pressure and textural detail, in a set shaped by the label's lineage but unbound by nostalgia. Most tracks were written specifically with Tectonic in mind, adding a sense of cohesion to a compilation that prizes forward motion and liminal spaces.

Kahn & Neek - "Motion Light"
SICARIA - "Rhassoul"

Pinch & Neffa-T - "This Is This Isn't"
Review: Bristol's Tectonic honcho Pinch is celebrating 20 years of the dubstep and bass music recordings outfit with a fresh 24-track compilation, which of course has been further split into four EPs and counting to optimise bassweight and tonearm response. Pinch is reminiscent and proud: "It feels like Tectonic has been a part of so many communities. There's something instinctive that binds all the releases - something that goes beyond words." This fourth comp-selects highlights the work of midcomers in the scene, such as Kahn, Neek, Gemmy and Neffa-T, predominantly courting the 140s but indulging some experiments, with 'Motion Light' creaking through strange midnight bazaar SFX, and 'This Is This Isn't' going buckwild on hard-clip kicks and rib-tickling rims.

Pinch - "Tectonic Sound"

Re:ni - "Sunrise On The Superloop"
VIVEK - "Gone W3st"
Review: Two decades in, the Bristol-born institution still sounds like the future. This wide-ranging compilation gathers new blood and familiar faces into a deep, weighty journey across techno, dubstep and adjacent frequencies, dialling in a vision that feels both forward-looking and steeped in sound system tradition. Standouts include Re:ni's tightrope-tensioned roller, Sicaria's deconstructed club mutations and Beatrice M.'s finely sculpted rhythmic hypnosis-each debuting on the label. Elsewhere, Kahn & Neek return with militant low-end drive, while Om Unit and RSD summon familiar ghosts of the Tectonic back catalogue in newly sharpened form. What unites it all is a spirit of clarity and pressure, true to DJ Pinch's guiding ethos: heads down, eyes closed, bass-first. It's not so much a retrospective as it is a fresh statement of purpose-24 tracks across six plates designed to test systems and point toward what's next.

Red

Rank
Review: First out in 2002, 'Red' marked a key pivot point for London producer, Big Apple Records tiller and later Rinse FM radio host Artwork. It drew a jagged line between his techno alias Grain and the UK garage sound he'd long championed; with its raw swing and instantly knowable, tuned 2-step rims, it managed to snared cult hit status over multiple scene; Bugz In The Attic most notably would so routinely roll it in sets that it would come to resemble a habitual zoot bun. Also oft cited as a proto-dubstep breakpoint, the title track's dropletty acid "woi" sound mimics a long cherished slang term commonly heard in the scene at the time. Then there's the dubplate shearing 'Rank', and we've also a formerly unreleased DAT cut, 'Relic' here: a rattling, percussive bonus that enshrines this edition as the version to end all versions. Its colour matching the title, 'Red' was always a bloody well done labour of love.

Review: New post-dubstep drastics from Tectonic Recordings, whose thwacking broken beat and dark garage stylings serve as expert material for the label's next phase. Tectonic Sound now launches as a six-part, 24-track vinyl series, of which two records have now been released in unison: alongside a first featuring Beatrice M, Cocktail Party Effect and Om Unit, this second one features cyber-bruk artist 2562, keygen system player Yussh, Punch Drunk favourite Appleblim and the perennial but rare orchid, Flora Yin Wong. 'Overcome' through to 'Virga' span the distinctive styles of each, beginning things on a numerological, tricky shuffle, and ending on a tugging ambient FX party.

Review: Now two decades deep, dubstep proliferators Tectonic celebrate with The Tectonic Sound, a 24-track manifesto spread across six 12"s, seismically shuttering any competition on a continental scale. Founded in 2005 by Bristol system sojourner DJ Pinch, the label has long straddled dubstep, techno, and the outer reaches of dub and bass music. Now several new fissures are calved open by Re:ni, Yushh, Sicaria, Flora Yin-Wong and Beatrice M., all of whom appear astride foundation shakers RSD, Om Unit, Kahn & Neek, and Peverelist. Almost all were written specifically with Tectonic in mind, not just its sound but its sensibility, echoing the early Skreams, Digital Mystikzes and Jokers that defined a certain subjective experience of dance music, not once erasable.

Mud Dub
Review: Fresh from unleashing Machine in full force at Roadburn, longtime UK system impresser The Bug drops 'Burials/Mud', a scorned rework of Machine album cuts pushed further into dub and distortion. Visiting producer Logan lights up the retooled 'Buried (Your Life Is Short)' as 'Bury Dem', while Magugu resurfaces on the previously digital-only 'Deep In A Mud', now pressed to vinyl. Both are accompanied by fierce dub mutations, welding harsh textures with low-end weight. The Bug calls it "verbal grime and sonic filth", a snarling midpoint between the industrial clang of Machine and the dubbed-out chaos of his live sets. No smoothing of edges here, just rhythm at its ruthlessless.

Review: DK aka Vietnamese DJ and composer Dangkhoa Chau has put out a wide array of sounds on labels including Melody As Truth, Music From Memory's Second Circle and L.I.E.S. Berlin's Midgar welcomes him here for some moody and deep techno that is stripped right back, often to ghostly pads, distant hisses and sparse hits. 'Vela Pulsar' is underpinned by a slipper and minimal rhythm while 'Terrestrial Time' rolls slowly but deeply on loose bass tumbles with all sorts of freaky sound designs, making it all the more cinematic. 'Inertia' is a precision-tooled and light techno floater that will suspend you above the floor. All four of these are original and expertly designed.

Review: At first we thought the latest Tectonic Sound compilation had been split into two, then four selectors' EPs, but this sixth edition functions to point out not one but two mistakes; there are six. This is just about the thoroughest divvying up of a full-length compilation we've ever come across, with every track on the full dubstep 24-tracker committed in analogue to its own groove. What ho, given the fact that dubstep is a genre demanding plate cutting for bass response par excellence, so the full compilation form does indeed make less sense for audiophiles, who *will* be able to hear the difference. This sixth selection hears the veteran dearests of Tectonic refire the classic dubstep oven, hearing the likes of RSD 'Roll Off' the tops through musicbox twinkles before high-cut wompage, and Distance bringing xenogenous sound design and serious mecha-dub dissent to 'Heresy'.

Review: Two UK underground mainstays join forces for the first time on Solstice, a taut, dub-soaked 12” landing via GD4YA. El-B, a primordial figure in the early 2-step and dark garage scenes, links with fellow dubstep cosmic egg SP:MC, better known for mic work in the d&b world but here stepping into full producer mode. The result is a trio of deep and stealthy versions, with the original and club dub locking into El-B’s trademark bitesize, pared-down drum sequencing style. V.I.V.E.K’s bonus remix preshes the tune further to the tune of weightless dubstep, with an especial ear for eerie spatial detail.

Review: Deep dubstep homebrews from Birmingham's Killa Sound on Moonshine Recordings, with the former lending a slick, reggae-flecked service to the latter parent label. So far having welcomed familiar system-hugging names such as Lapo & Ago, Compa, DJ Madd and Bukkha, the label lay down their first ever unknown artist offering here, and the result is a bassy one: heavy lies the crown, as a murderous but divine writ warlord-king blasts two sternum-shattering, brass hooking helluva-hitters from across the battlefield: equal parts morality play and right of might, 'Roots Of All Evil' and 'Fittest Of The Fittest' bring unabashed power to warring floors.

Review: Leipzig producer Old Man Crane makes her debut here with a new four-track 12" that explores new deep dubstep frontiers and subterranean bass excellence. Beatrice M's Bait label has been busy in the two years since it launched, as this marks a 16th outing, and their previous One Hundred and Fifty Steps compilation actually featured a first track from Old Man Crane. This fuller offering is class indeed, with 'Hepp' rolling on a nice, rounded, thudding kick as smattered tops tap out a rhythm. 'Brew' is darker and more driving with a rolling bass energy and eerie urban atmosphere up top. 'Veil' is a slower rhythm with blurting sounds and lonely bird calls and 'Quork' then ups the pace with potent dub weight and searching synths. A fine solo start to life on vinyl for Old Man Crane.

Review: After a pair of 12" selectors' teasers, the full edition of Tectonic Sound stands poised to plot a new course for Pinch's long-running Bristol label, pulling a drawstring on a freshly foraged crock of producer talent alongside with cured and matured names from its past. The 24-tracker welcomes first-timers like Re:ni, Beatrice M., Yushh, Flora Yin Wong and Sicaria, as well as cornerstone figures such as 2562, Shed and Distance. Nearly all contributions were made with the label's DNA in mind: bass-led electronics working the fault line between dubstep, techno and broken rhythms. "More so than just the sound, the music is in tune with the real ethos of the early dubstep scene," says Pinch. "It's led by hearts really."

Review: TIGHE is a new name on us with nothing out there to tell us more, but whoever they are they know how to make walls rattle with their deepest dubstep. This offering comes on Beatrice M's Bait label and opens with the eerie 'Empty Units', which is a masterclass in building suspense and tension through empty spaces. The low end wobbles with glistening hi hats in the mids and distant sonic echoes adding late night intrigue. 'Untitled 9' is a busier cut that rides a lumpy broken beat with glitchy textures, and 'Cut Off' then has tribal percussion shimmering over more cavernous low ends. A pair of flipside remixes from Pianeti Sintetici & Yogg add more drive to close out a fine EP.

But first comes the original, which is still a devastating cut with a booming low end and eerie sense of open space and late-night shadows that keep you looking over your shoulder.
