Review: Originally released in 2003, Silence In The Secret Garden was the a pivotal debut for Detroit dogstar Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodymann. Though he's now notorious for his outfits, eclectic selections, Prince shrines and coteries of ladies accompanying him during interviews, Dixon's patent sound-schemes of dusty house, gospel, soul and jazz were then to be unscrolled like a yet undiscovered papyrus, causing a real stir indeed. Earlier EPs and singles than this were given to funk-laced sample flips, but it's this debut LP that set aside Moodymann as a real creative force in the world: shot glass tinkles, late night club night persiflage, and respect for the sample source are the rules of the game on the slow mahogany braises of 'LiveInLA 1998' and 'Backagainforthefirsttime?'.

Review: French DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Olivier Portal sadly passed away in January, aged 65. His best work came as Playin 4 The City and this EP is one of his most sought-after on the Plastik People label. It features two tracks originally released on the 'Backshop' EP on Tropism Records 2002 and one newer sound. Opener 'Minor Track' is a brilliantly aloof deep house cut with swinging, dubby drums and cute chord stabs that do enough to keep you moving. 'Backfire' is just as breezy but a little quicker with some sleek synths and nice claps moving things on with a cosmic edge. 'Backside' rides a nice chunky, tumbling rhythm with more subtle but seductive synth work.

Review: US house mainstay Delano Smith has always operated at the dubber, more stripped-back and techno-leaning end of the spectrum. He is a master of crafting perfect loops that could roll for days a never grow dull. The full extent of that skill was laid bare on his wonderful album An Odyssey, which turns 20 in 2025. He has long been close to Sushitech who now reissue it in a very limited run on a special gold slab of wax. The tunes are heady, lo-fi, grainy and gorgeous sounds for warm-ups, zone-outs and plenty of the more discerning and intimate moments in between.

Review: For the uninitiated, Rotation Sound System is a collective of veteran crate diggers, DJs, producers and party promoters spearheaded by Mind Fair's Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, and Wreckin' Havoc trio Rob J, Stuart Robinson and Rich Hall. For years they've thrown an annual garden party (using their custom soundsystem of the same name) and now Leng has offered them a chance to curate their own comp. As you'd expect, the 12-track collection is piled high with largely unknown gems, from the tactile, syntth-heavy Balearic breeze of Moondata's 'Let The Sunshine In (Dub)' and Roger Renning's chugging dub disco aligned 'Cecelia', to the oddball boogie-pop of 'Music' by Amy Cooper, the Italo-disco inspired throb of Michael Heart's 'Some Girls (Instrumental)' and the loved-up synth-pop-goes-proto-house of Jean Louis Murat's 'To Garder Pres De Moi (Dream Remix)'.

Review: British soul man Omar has been remixed countless times over the years, often with genuinely spellbinding or dancefloor ready results. Back in 2010, Peppermint Jam delivered an incredible set of revisions, which 15 years later has finally been given the reissue treatment. The EP begins with a superb -house-goes-soul take on 'Feeling You' courtesy of Henrik Schwarz (who was then at the peak of his dancefloor powers), before Triad delivers a smoother, deeper, and more gorgeously spaced-out flip of 'Stylin'. Over on the reverse, Andre Lodemann joins the dots between deep house and tech-house on a Berlin-ready rework of 'Lay It Down', while Show B slaps down an inspired (and still much-played) acid house-fired interpretation of 'Your Mess'.

Review: Happy 40th birthday to TRAX Records, the imprint that arguably did more than any other to spread the sound of Chicago house around the world in the 80s and early 90s. This anniversary EP gathers together a mix of stone cold classics, obscurities and more recent gems. Review: Only Music Matters hits release number ten with another anonymous artist serving up a trio of tasteful minimal and tech rollers that have already been supported by Dubfire and Priku. 'AAA001A' is a wicked mix of synthetic and organic sound - a heartfelt male vocal and new age flutes, sci-fi melodies and bubbly drums all coalesce into a hypnotic roller, then 'BBB001B' picks up the pace with a smattering of silvery toms and snares over dubby beats. Last of all, 'BBB002B' brings some colour next to trippy and abstract synths and whispered vocals that are stitched into a silky and ever-evolving rhythm. Classy stuff.

Review: Detroit don Norm Talley is as consistent as they come in house music circles. Despite a fine catalogue of cool cuts, 'Cosmic Wave' is his standout and a clear fan favourite. It dropped back in 2010 but has been reissued many times on different labels, this time on his own Upstaris Aslum. It's the very essence of stripped-back and functional house/techno but with an impossibly impactful machine soul, the drums, synth waves and percussion all looping infinitely. But within that endless repetition there is beauty, hypnosis, and catharsis to be found. Sheer class, before you even get into the shimmering, sublimely gliding remix from Luke Hess & Brian Kage and the sparser 'Cosmic Reality', all stop/start funkiness rooted down by massive electronic handclaps.

Review: For their latest dip into house music history, reissue specialists Mint Condition take us back to 1994 and the debut release from British deep house legend Charles Webster under the Love From San Francisco alias - a moniker he adopted after moving to the Bay Area from the East Midlands in the early 90s. The definite 'Thumpin' House Mix' of the track, a typically chunky, 11-minute workout that joins the dots between the intoxicating East Midlands deep house sound, and more hypnotic, spaced-out and sun-splashed West Coast US house, naturally gets pride of place on side. The former has been crafting deeply melodic and synth-laced house and techno soundscapes for some time and opens with 'Blues In Flight' which is all jacked-up beats and wispy, astral melodies and pads. Laak offers a more slinky and garage-infused sound on 'Apophis' and layers it up with twinkling modulations. Then comes a Laak Retroflex remix of the opener that reworks it into a deeper and more heads down sound before the Life Recorder House 2 Jazz mix of 'Apophis' explores cosmic jazz keys and shimmering deep house beats.

Review: It has become increasingly difficult to second-guess Alex 'Omar' Smith. Where once we knew what we'd get - hypnotic and high-grade Motor City deep house - in recent years he's successfully expanded his musical palette whilst retaining the core elements of his trademark sound. So, what can we expect from his latest four-tracker? A real mixed bag of goodness, that's what! So while title track 'Come On Claire Reese' wraps crystalline, freestyle-influenced synthesiser melodies and echoing syn-toms around a sequenced disco bassline and metronomic house beats, the cut that follows, 'Packer Beats', is a sleazy, noise-encrusted and heavily effects-laden drum machine workout. Similarly, flip-side opener 'Right Now' builds a down-low house jam around samples from an old blues recording, while 'Yeearrs' is a slow build, filter-heavy DJ tool crafted from wide-eyed and ear-catching samples.

Review: Ever-reliable Detroit veteran Rick Wade returns to the equally on-point Rawax with a suitably bumping set of house cuts. The 'Night Trackin' EP kicks off with the brilliantly titled 'Angry Jazz', where dusty drums and murky bass notes drive sinister funk synths in a determined dancefloor direction. 'Night Track' sees jazzy chords floating over shuffling beats and low-slung bass for a heads-down moment of introspection, before the glistening vibes melody on 'Your Love' and soul-rich vocal add a little honey to the ho-ho pot. Finally, the vintage soul samples of 'I Can't Take It' loop into infinity, with rugged drums powering the relentlessly funky groove.

Review: Deep house foot soldier DJ Aakmael strikes a perfect balance between gritty grooves and heady escapism with the music he makes. He's fairly prolific, too, and never goes too long between 12"s. He's back on his own Unxpozd Entertainment here with its 10th outing and it opens with the irresistible head nodder 'Oceandeep'. 'Nature' has more widescreen atmosphere with smeared chords swirling round the cuddly kicks and 'Reach 4 My Luv' then offering an excuse to daydream and get lost in empty mindfulness. 'Track 190' brings your focus back with some cosmic jazz melodies and a more propulsive groove.

Review: No Fuss founders Saison are the latest 21st century house heroes to join the roster of reborn New York house stable Nu Groove. In keeping with the label's recent output, the North London duo's EP offers nods aplenty to classic NYC house whilst retaining their trademark deep house-meets-tech-house sound. Review: Gene Tellem returns to her own Bienvenue with Phantom Vibrations, a five-track distillation of her quietly emotional house aesthetic into a suite of slow-blooming, groove-driven reflections. Based in Montreal and active since 2017, Tellem has steadily carved a distinct lane, equally grounded in classic deep house and shaped by her own indie roots, whether solo, in her band Secret Witness or behind the scenes at Bienvenue. She works her alongside US vocalist Teddy Bryant on four versions of a slippery lovesick title number, all sliding between whispered vulnerability and late-night propulsion. The two additional remixes by Japanese polymath Kuniyuki Takahashi, whose CV includes Theo Parrish and DJ Sprinkles, offer contrasting angles.

Review: Felipe Gordon returns to Sweden's Local Talk with a fluid and deeply expressive live session-nine tracks cut with an eight-piece band that glide between jazz-funk, fusion, and house, laced with Bogota flair. 'Wes' sets the tone: sun-licked guitar licks, Rhodes keys and rimshots opening out into a laid-back funk strut. 'Strings Of The Afterlife' and 'The Colombian Excursions Of House Music' bring signature Gordon textures into fuller, warmer form-gorgeously arranged yet dancefloor-conscious. Vocalist Paula Pera adds soulful phrasing to the swirling 'The Semi Modular Bird Of Jazz' and a bold, disco-fired cover of 'Gipsy Woman', backed by Bob The Egoist. Elsewhere, 'Socorro Y Jupiter' leans into jazz-fusion psychedelia, and 'Highly Deep And Conductive' stretches toward broken beat territory. It's one of Gordon's most expansive and musically rich projects yet.

Review: Rick Wade is one of Detroit and house music's most consistent performers. He is a master of crafting tools that never miss on the floor but also have the sort of character that means they endure across the ages and remain impervious to passing trends. Art Is The Place has his latest, and it opens with the angelic vocals of 'Level Up' over a whimsical groove, then 'Big Ha Blues' gets more deep and zoned out with pillowy pads and wet claps. 'Intrusive Emotions' has a more grinding low end but stays slow and is softened by jazz keys, then 'Bitter Sweet brings some dust and grit. Another faultless outing from Wade.

Review: There is a great backstory to Darryl Baalki. We don't know how true it is, if at all, but it goes something like this: he is an enigmatic figure raised alone by his mother, his only connection to the outside world was his father's record collection. As a child, he believed this collection contained all the music ever created. Convinced that new music could only emerge by reassembling its parts, he obsessively listened, memorised, and mentally reconstructed sound before making new compositions from existing pieces. This is his latest missive and it is deeply moving, from the percussive jumble of the opener to the earthy shuffle and seductive sax of 'Devil May Care' via the hypnotising trumpet leads of 'Nothing Will Break You'. Fans of Mo Kolours et all will love this.
