Even After All (Suckaside remix)
Gorilla Witness
Review: Since 2021, Suckaside - aka. ghetto-funk superstar B-side and funky DJ Sucka Timmy - have been prolific in their steady but healthy stream of releases in the realm of bespoke beats, centring on hip-hop, breakbeat and funk edits. Though mostly a digital affair, at least four vinyl records from the outfit have been released, and now this new one, 'Even After All', can be considered a part of that repertoire. Most prominently on this release comes a fresh fremix of the Finlay Quaye's 1997 hit 'Even After All', which was featured on his debut album Maverick A Strike.

Review: Four years ago, Timmy Regisford and Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell delivered a hush-hush 12" single featuring their versions of Nina Simone classic 'Blackbird'. It has become something of a sought-after single, hence this limited-edition reissue. Regisford kicks things off with a fine rework that places Simone's iconic vocals atop a bouncy Afro-house beat and warming deep house instrumentation, before Claussell lays down two 'Edits and Overdubs' versions: a jacking but musically expansive main mix - all drum machine fills, organ solos and sonic spirituality - and a 'Bonus Beats Organ Dub' that sees him lace killer keys atop an infectious house groove. 'Rebel Nina', a spoken word spirit lifted from a vintage Simone interview, completes an essential EP.

Soulful Strut (Organ mix)
Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: At the start of 2024, BADBADNOTGOOD channeled their renewed creative energy into the Mid Spiral series. Fresh off a string of international tour dates and collaborations with artists like Daniel Caesar, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Turnstile, the Canadian trio - Al Sow, Chester Hansen, and Leland Whitty - returned to the studio with a vibrant sense of purpose. Joined by touring member Felix Fox-Pappas and key Toronto jazz musicians Kaelin Murphy, Juan Carlos Medrano, and LA's Tyler Lott, they embarked on an intensive recording session at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles. The result is the Mid Spiral series, initially released digitally in three parts - Chaos, Order, and Growth - and now available as a double LP and CD. These suites mark a return to their instrumental jazz roots while seamlessly blending elements of hip-hop, neo-soul, psychedelic and funk.

Review: Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP Halfway Somewhere, released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Led by lead single 'Circles Going Round The Sun', which proffers a watery, spiritual jazz-dance exposition through which the raspy vocal humours of the group's founder, Rob Gallagher, waxes poetic about the meaning of getting together for a boogie in the club. Where the somatic essence of the night might otherwise be resigned to experience alone, Galliano defy the unfortunate tendency for philistinism among dance music enjoyers in favour of a consistent spoken-word throughline; this is what the group have done since the 1980s, when they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, with 'Welcome To The Story'. Their first full-length record to emerge since their first album, Live at The Liquid Room (Tokyo), released in 1997, Halfway Somewhere is a triumphant yet latent return for these essential players.

The title track, 'Vector Smector,' offers a smooth groove with a classy piano solo that weaves through a polished electronic rhythm section. It's a delightful fusion that balances sophistication with a laid-back vibe. On Side-2 ,'What You Gonna Say,' introduces a funky edge, incorporating crowd noise for added atmosphere. Review: Jeroboam serves up the tongue-in-cheek title 'Brexit Funk' on Chuwanaga and is sure to get you moving as a result. There is some serious sunshine and Brit-funk loveliness to the title track. It is lit up with vibes keys and irresistible funk basslines that all brim with good-time fun. 'Peckham Night' is a more sultry and steamy sound for when the sun is setting thanks to its lazy drums and splashy cymbals all topped with some smoky trumpet soul. A dub mix rounds out with even deeper-cut grooves and romantic melodies. Three grown-up delights for sure.

Review: Cooperation, the label launched some years back by members of the music community at the heart of legendary West London broken beat night Co-Op, continues to impress. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing on the second volume in their ongoing Our Music Our Culture compilation series. Wipe The Needle join forces with golden-voiced Andre Esput on the deliciously deep and soulful broken beat gem 'Here We Go', before the temperature is raised by a trio of extra-percussive workouts, the standout of which is Soulparlour's heavy and insatiably funky future bruk classic 'Digital Soul (Naut L8 Nite Edit)'. Other fine cuts to check include the Bugz In the Attic-esque Bruk Rogers jam 'Get Strong' and the unfeasibly weighty and jacking 'Purest Dope' by Sonar's Ghost (AKA Co-Op legend Domu).

Foat shines as the lead at times, while the band complements him perfectly, setting a relaxing mood throughout the album. Highlights include 'Sea Of Tranquility,' a moody horn lullaby that embodies space jazz at its finest. 'Foals Of Epona' features a soothing jazz band with a funky drummer, creating a delightful groove. 'Clusters' brings a nostalgic 60s jazz ambiance, enveloping listeners in its rich soundscape. The standout track, 'My Love Has Green Eyes,' showcases magnificent sax work with beautiful keys, enhancing the band's intricate mixture. The Glass Frog is a fantastic album for both casual and hardcore jazz fans, offering a perfect blend of smooth, funky, and atmospheric jazz elements. Greg continues to impress.

Review: New-gen rare groove band Nautilus, operating out of Japan, deliver their latest 7" record, 'Life'. Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Something Special
Review: A strikingly unique dance music project from Nagasaki producer, DJ and sound director Keisuke Yamazoe, Aflex Combo has always been an impressive project, straddling several EPs stretching back to 2002 - and all centring, in the artist's own words, on heavy funk beats and obscure jazz and Latin grooves. Jazz Roomn Records now release his cover-remix of the underground club classic 'Hibaros', originally by B&G Rhythm (Donny Beck & Steve Gutierrez, featuring Bobby Lyle). Several unusual time signatures modulate across its A-sided, dancey groove - don't be fooled, things need not settle into a 4/4 repetition to be worthy of a ball - whilst B-sider 'Something Special' lets things slack a little more, letting several, live-recorded drum loops rest on top of one another, while a sort of glockenspiel/celeste-esque instrument tinkles over the top. Something special indeed.

Review: The Stance Brothers strike another battle pose on their latest experimental 7" 'Sao Paolo / Timmy', proffering a can't-quite-place-it je ne sais qoui, perhaps best describable as something between boxy jazz-funk on the A, and inner-childlike, xylophonic dub on the B. Deceptively the alias of one person - Finnish drummer and producer Teppo "Teddy Rok" Makynen - the Stance Brothers' project nominally takes after the likes of jazz-funk greats like Bob James & CTI, but the B-side in particular here offers much more than that set of references might connote. The A-side conforms to the reference enough, with chromatic Rhodeses and crispily jabbing drums giving rise to a numinous analog arpeggiation at the end; but the B really takes the cake, indulging everything from shaken digidub eighths to tottering mallet putters.

Regular contributors to their patrons Urban Discos and Oonops Drops, their repertoire extends to everything from full-length EPs' and albums’ worths of original material to one-off guilty pleasure covers. This new rendition of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ definitely falls into the latter category. This slick new version abounds in gut-grasping major chords and spine-tingling drum brush caresses, and features passionately candid yet no less elegant vocals by Ray Yamaoda. On the B comes the comparatively funky knockout and jazz original, ‘Through The Night’.

Review: Thievery Corporation's It Takes a Thief serves as a retrospective compilation, offering a selective glimpse into the duo's career. While chosen by Eric Hilton and Rob Garza themselves, the tracklist lacks the variety and intrigue found in other band retrospectives. The formulaic nature of Thievery Corporation's sound remains consistent throughout the album, with familiar elements of trip-hop-inspired lounge beats and pseudo-anonymous international vocals. Political undertones are present in tracks like ;Vampires' and 'Amerimacka,' though it's the sentimental love songs like 'Lebanese Blonde' and 'Sweet Tides' that resonate most deeply. While It Takes a Thief covers the variety of Thievery Corporation's catalog very well. While their discography is vast, if there was any one release by Thievery Corporation to get the most from their career, this has to be it. This reissue honours the original in every sense while adding a beautiful "coke-style" colored vinyl to the package design. This album celebrates some of the best downtempo music in the heyday of the genre.

Review: In October 2024 Lady Blackbird, producer and guitarist Chris Seefried, Foundation Music label head and A&R Ross Allen and Blackbird's travelling band of Kenneth Crouch (keys), Tamar Barzilay (drums) and Johnny Flaughers (bass) took a break from extensively touring her prior album, Black Acid Soul, to lay down several tracks in Los Angeles. Decamping for a week-long recording session in the legendary recording studio complex East West, the fable goes that an uninterrupted spate of session magic ensued, out from which five acid jazz and soul bursters sprang forth. A curt selection of just five tracks, of which there were many more recorded during the LA session, the likes of 'Purify', 'It Must Be Love' and 'When The Game Is Played On You' span the whole gamut of modern soul, from the bright to the bare-bones but beguiling.

Here, they present their interpretation of one of the most sublime soulful house tracks of all time - Kings of Tomorrow's 'Finally'. Their version is warm, dreamy and gently breezy, with Misa Sugiyama's beautiful lead vocals rising above a summery blend of shuffling jazz-house beats, twinkling pianos, warming synths, heady electric piano chords and spacey electronics. The quality of this instrumentation (and the pair's superb arrangements) comes through loud and clear on the accompanying instrumental take.

Review: The Ballistic Brothers are back with another reissued nine-track dose of bare but big breaks belligerents. This cult '90s supergroup emerged from the steaming manhole covers of the London hip-hop underground - as the saying goes, "if you were part of any clubbing tribe in the early/mid 90s, you will have danced to the Ballistic Brothers". Made up of Darren Rock, Darren House, Ashley Beadle, David Hill and Uschi Classen, the bulk of their fame wafted forth from a swathe of surreptitious vinyl releases that took the record-digging community by storm at the time, yet which also invited much speculation as to their original membership (the wonders of the internet weren't so readily available back then). A variegated selection of tracks culled from many a different EP, we're compelled to recall a golden time when breakbeats weren't so brash, and in fact served as rhythmic accompaniments to a set of otherwise beauteous atmospheres. Cases in point include 'Save The Children', which combine trippy pan-pipes and funky organ with a theme of charitable concern, and 'Blacker 94 EQ', which impresses us yet more with its acid jazz breakouts and electric piano solo and which makes stark use of the suspenseful string line endemic to the sound.

Review: Rob Gallagher and company make up Galliano, the trailblazing jazz and broken beat supergroup, active at least since 1997 andrenowned for their contribution to the musical landscape across the difficult-to-bridge gaps between music, fashion, spoken word and a concern for current affairs. Having staked their claim to their portion of the jazz and electronica pie as early as 1990, when they first appeared on the scene via Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, Galliano have gone down in memory as a pioneering acid hip-jazz act, "capturing a scene (then) built on re-invention", in the words of Brownswood. Now the five-piece collective once again moves at one, synergising over a nineteen-track opus, three decades on from their debut, recalling the (literal) quintessence of London's down-in-history acid jazz scene.

Review: 'If It Ain't Deep', then it's... shallow? Whatever the closing predicate of Ricardo Miranda's titular sentence fragment may be, we're still more than happy to welcome this fantastic Detroit sizzler. And perhaps that's the point, because not everything, and especially not techno, needs an ending. Miranda, that state-trotting record-churning production-and-DJ cognoscente originally from Chicago, delivers four truly deep house scoop-outs here. Opening on the listless, unfathomably machinic 'No Desires', we're met with proper 808s (long-release spit-snares, mid-plunging rimshots). Sadly enough for Miranda, our desires aren't allayed for a second; there's then 'Lost Skills', which echo the ancient ways of Ghost Dog through detuned FM bursts, not to mention the hair-raisingly sweeping washes of 'Day 2 Forget B'.

Review: The changing face of nu-jazz is heard mutating once more on this third album by Soulstatejazz, released via the Chapelle XIV label. Band-led by multi-instrumental talent Tom Ellis - who is here heard on drums, percs, bass, guitars, piano and synths - he's backed up by Bugu Pala and Charles Morgan on vocals, Michiel Renger on tenor sax, Dave Elson on electronic percussion and Vicky Flint on trumpet and flute. The result is a rich, hypnotic and swirling journey through the wateriest ends of improv-based electronic jazz, making for a landmark new album.

Review: To red and black splatter vinyl comes Nubya Garcia's latest full-length record Odyssey, out of which which a nascent batch of volcanic red jazz, dub and hip-hop fusions effuse. Produced by Garcia in collaboration with London legend Kwes, Garcia returns with Joe Armon-Jones (keys), Daniel Casimir (bass) and Sam Jones (drums), also enlisting the aid of such featured guests as Esperanza Spalding and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Leading with the felsic dance that is 'The Seer', across which what sound to be microtonal saxophone improvisations move across dark interregnums and moodily rapacious razzes, the ensuing album is equally as explosive and never settles or sets, despite its molten presentation.

Review: Scenes From My Soul marks the culmination of the career of one of the essential figures in the history of electronic music on the island of Mallorca, and undoubtedly one of the most important figures in the Balearic sound. Pepe Link (Jose Angel Lopez Ojeda) is a veritable day-one of the Balearic isle's propagation of the eponymous dance sound; this can best be described as a 'mood' or affectation rather than a form, with the artist himself swearing by the subgenre's privileging of "creating a landscape and evoking a moment", rather than following any pattern. Scenes From My Soul implies a state of psychic oneness with the named archipelago, with its instrumental, guitarry dance landscapes resounding as much in the manner of visual impressions of a jettied eye as they do in the manner of a landscape painting. Our fave here has to be the acoustic pluck swanabouts of 'Vem Menina' and its equivalents heard across the record, most of which thoroughly vindicate Link's status as a day-dotter and subsequent legend.

Review: Pops Roberts has already made her mark on the Manchester scene, not just by providing guest vocals on records by Ruf Dug and Finn, but also as producer of soul band Lovescene. Here she delivers her first solo EP as Private Joy. Roberts sets her stall out with the woozy, loved-up ambient hug of 'Eyes On You (Intro)', before unleashing the song itself - a gorgeous fusion of street soul swing, sultry r&b, classy musicality, deep house pads and her own gorgeous lead vocals. Ada Francis takes to the mic on bouncy, harp-sporting deep soulful house number 'Let Love Find a Way', while Medulla makes a star-turn on the head-nodding, toe-tapping 21st century soul jam 'Pure Love'. Elsewhere, 'Playful' is slow and sultry with delicate nods to reggae, while 'Desire' is oozing with loved-up slow-dance flavour.

Review: Tenor saxophonist, bandleader and composer Nubya Garcia returns with her sophomore album, Odyssey, her second release on the Concord Jazz imprint, out in September 2024. Backlit by a decidedly crimson red, Garcia comes back by the likes of Kwes. and Joe-Armon Jones for a full dozen tracks of epical spiritual jazz travails. Laconic yet ipso facto expressive, Garcia remarks of the record that she felt that it ended up 'transversing so many things'; rather than settling on just one universe as a homeward base, Garcia finds freedom in the continual movement between universes. Led by the tense but no less joy-inflective 'The Seer', on which moods of broken jazz, and that of a treacherous but sagacious journeys, is evinced, Odyssey kicks things off on a larger-than-life note.

Review: David Lyn's debut album, The World I Hear (Essence of Life), invites listeners to truly stop and listen to the world's music. Exploring the elements of fire, earth, water, and wind, the album focuses on love and water—both fluid and powerful. 'Drum Connection' is remixed by Chicago legend Elbert Phillips, a protégé of Frankie Knuckles. 'Maria Juana' features Ibero-Cuban artist Arema Arega and composer-producer Andrew Nicholas, AKA Born74. Engineered by Shamrock Guitor and mastered by Andy Compton at Peng Studios, the album boasts arrangements by Dr. Bob Jones and Gee W, with vocal contributions from Vuyelwa Mgatyelwa and Elena Rogozhina. Lyn’s album is an international collaboration, blending genres and influences to create music that speaks to the heart, soul, dance floor, and mind.

Review: XL Recordings presents the long-awaited repress of keiyaA's 2020 album Forever, Ya Girl. The singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist was raised in Chicago's South Side; now based in New York, her jazz training, R&B sensibilities, and hip-hop inheritability are all deployed to full effect, crafting an experimental soul sound inundated with powerfully sultry voice and dense lyricism. Aiming to to foreground the standpoint and intellect of the black woman in the late-stage capitalist landscape, Forever, Ya Girl brings a sawn-off, digital neo-soul inflection to themes of struggle and grace, all while deploying many a quirky interjection and voice-modded sample between the beats.

The legendary Galcher Lustwerk steps up to add his own distinctive take on the original and infuses it with a techy yet atmospheric groove. Review: Endlessness is a deep dive into the cycle of existence. The 45-minute album delicately spans ten tracks guided by a continuous arpeggio that plays throughout, crafting an expansive, mesmerising celebration of life cycles and rebirth. Following Sinephro’s critically acclaimed 2021 debut album Space 1.8, Endlessness further elevates her transcendent, multi-dimensional compositional practice, beautifully morphing jazz, orchestral, and electronic music. Through a decalogue of “continuums”, a fittingly continual, through-compositional wonderwork is designed and laid to recording, channelling a dignified, spacefaring mood of nobility, as though it were of divine extraterrestrial providence.

Bakteria (DaM-FunK Re-Freak)
Review: The Bloto quartet recently marked their return with 'Szlam' and 'Scieki,' their first singles in over two years, released on a limited 7" vinyl via Astigmatic Records. These tracks sold out instantly, leaving fans eager for more. The band now continues their musical assault with another 7" release, featuring a remix by modern funk maestro DaM-FunK from Pasadena, California. This release serves as a prelude to their upcoming LP Grzybnia, set for an autumn 2024 release. Bloto's latest single, 'Bakteria,' draws heavily from classic acid house, offering a sinister and primitive sound that's reminiscent of the harsh resilience of bacteria. Recorded during an improvisation session at Studio Pasterka, the band has abandoned acoustic instruments in favour of synthesisers and drums, creating a raw, infectious track. DaM-FunK's remix, 'Bakteria Re-Freak,' transforms the original's dark atmosphere into a vibrant G-Funk track, filled with sunny synths and a drum machine beat. It evokes a biopharmaceutical bacterium leisurely moving through the streets of Los Angeles, blending warmth with a hint of danger. This release not only boasts Bloto's innovative spirit but also highlights DaM-FunK's ability to reimagine and elevate the original material.

Review: Colonel Red & Inkswel's latest project, proudly presented by Liquid Beat, delves deep into themes of freedom, liberation and self-reinvention with an immediate, soulful sound. Their music, characterised by layered rhythms and poetic songwriting, underscores the joy of breaking free from mental and economic shackles, emphasising its importance for humanity and historical justice. On Side-1, 'Joy' is a slow-burning groove that blends hot rhythm and blues with a strong urban essence. The track's compelling beat and soulful vibe make it a standout. 'This Side,' by way of contrast, offers an upbeat funk infused with psychedelic elements, reminiscent of George Clinton or even Fishbone. This track brings a lively, infectious energy that invites people to celebrate and move. This project pushes a bold, decisive artistic vision rooted in the human spirit.

Review: Galliano's return with Halfway Somewhere marks a significant moment in the resurgence of acid jazz. Led by founder Rob Gallagher, the band delve into the essence of club culture with their first single, 'Circles Going Round The Sun,' exploring the transformative power of dance. Referencing cultural icons like Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso, Galliano capture the spirit of London's underground scene from the late 80s, blending music, dance, fashion, and art. With their debut on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, Galliano epitomized reinvention, embracing a fusion of influences from Jamaican style to spoken word records. Now, more than three decades later, they return with a refreshed lineup, drawing inspiration from the global jazz scene. Halfway Somewhere reflects Galliano's evolution, responding to the dynamic landscape of contemporary jazz while retaining their signature sound. With contributions from longtime members and guest artists, the album embodies the band's enduring spirit of experimentation and joy. As they navigate this new chapter, Galliano proves they're still on a journey, but one filled with excitement and creativity.

Music By Cavelight (20th Anniversary Edition)

Review: 20 years on from its initial release in 2004, Ninja Tune share the first ever reissue of Blockhead's Music By Cavelight. The New York-based alias of Tony Simon, this record is the quintessence of Ninja Tune's smoked-out trip-hop sound at the time, and for which Simon himself likewise came to be known. Recalling a time when instrumental beatsmiths were much likelier to consider their crafts artful enough to warrant calling their studios beat-smithies (as compared to the sadly throwaway feel of much instrumental hip-hop today), one can really hear the subtlety and care poured into each vignette here, our favourites among which are 'Bullfight In Ireland', 'Graveyard Hunt' and 'Bloop Bloop'; all play back like studies of a gritty, degage, sun-bathed vision of a bygone big smoke.

Review: We are thrilled to announce the European release of a record by one of our Brazilian musical heroes, a king of tropical groove across all eras. This highly limited edition comes in a unique sleeve, making it a killer record and absolutely essential. Great albums often lead to great shows, but with Donato Eletrico, the reverse is true. This album began to take shape after a 2014 performance at Sesc Pinheiros in Sao Paulo, Brazil. During this show, the artist finally presented the iconic album "Quem e Quem" live, more than 40 years after its initial release. For this significant event, Donato collaborated with young Sao Paulo musicians who had been working with him on a new project. Together, they recreated the original groove-laden atmosphere of Quem e Quem, centered around Joao's electric piano. The success of this performance made it clear that this collaboration had the potential for more. The result is Donato Eletrico, a vibrant collection of tracks that hark back to the distinctive sound Donato explored in the 70s.

Review: Japanese jazz fusion trio Nautilus present one of seemingly many new full-length records, Pacific Voyage: a starry, late-summer opus touching on yacht rock and ‘80s city pop. Breaking from their sublimely variable EP-craft (instrumental four-trackers, one-off covers of pop songs, etc.) Pacific Voyage follows a long thread of inspirations, reinterpreting many of the classics of the city pop era that decisively informed on their nonetheless jazz sound. Songs like the heavily sampled Bobby Caldwell song, ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’, as well as Toto’s 'Georgy Porgy’, hear a completely new coat of paint and fresh interpretation translated into now and tomorrow.
