Review: Boy Harsher's second album delves into the shadowy realms of minimal wave, weaving stark synths and propulsive rhythms into a haunting tapestry. Tracks like 'Face the Fire' and 'Fate' showcase the duo's ability to craft dancefloor-ready beats infused with a brooding intensity. The lo-fi production evokes a sense of icy detachment, yet there's an underlying warmth in Jae Matthews' vocals that adds depth to the coldwave aesthetic. While some ambient interludes may feel less impactful, the album's cohesive atmosphere and emotive undercurrents make it a compelling listen for those drawn to the darker side of electronic music.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Boy Harsher really can do no wrong. The dark wave, minimal-leaning devil disco synthers - AKA vocalist Jae Matthews and producer Augustus Muller - have been making music to blow minds, and accompany visceral imagery, since long before they had tracks licensed for TV and movies. So it's fitting they have now graduated to writing an entire score, and what a score it is.

The Runner spans the groove-infused, mechanically euphoric 'Autonomy', through the sinister and unsettlingly tense 'The Ride Home', 'Machina' and its sexy retro-futurism, 'Escape''s e-funk warm balladry, and so much more. It's a wild ride through an after dark world that's as familiar today as it was in the 1980s, and yet still feels like a true adventure. Compelling to listen to, and that's putting it mildly.

Review: Within moments of 'Lust' kicking into its delightfully opiate take on disco you're hooked on Boy Harsher. Many try to emulate the spirit and sound of the 1980s synth underground, few have managed to hit the nail on the head while still delivering something that's entirely themselves, and feels as though born of a new era, and an old one, all at the same time.

So much of Lesser Man feels similar to what you imagine having sex with robots might be like - militant, deceptively human, and unbelievably raunchy in a stiff kind of way. The future unfolding, crashing, and trying to love in front of your eyes, if this is telling of 2022's musical standards then we're all in for a real treat. Twisted, slightly sinister, utterly sexy, mechanical-but-groovy joy.

Review: Self-styled "minimal synth duo" Boy Harsher has released some fine music over the last few years, though little quite as on-point and majestic as 2018's "Country Girl" EP. Here they offer up a new-look "uncut" edition of the stylish set, which expands the original four-track set via a quartet of previously unreleased recordings from the same period. You'll find the original EP - complete with the throbbing but picturesque "Motion" and dreamy "Country Girl" - on side A, with the bonus material on the flip. Of these, we're particularly enjoying the gentle pulse of "Underwater", and the "Please" era Pet Shop Boys flex of "Send Me A Vision" and "Westerners".

Review: It has been a decade since Boy Harsher first landed on our plates and found a very quick route into our palette, and we wouldn't change anything about our relationship betwixt then and now. Always ready to remind you why coldwave and synthwave were made to score the movies that don't exist anywhere but your mind and memories of an analogue childhood, they've also never resorted to cheap pastiche, choosing to reimagine and push those sounds forward rather than simply add noise to the conversation.

2014's Lesser Man, their debut EP, exemplifies this perfectly. From the appropriately titled 'Lust', and its desperate sense of yearning, to the dancfloor-happy, cheeky percussive cut 'Modulations', wall of haunting distortion that is 'Crimea', to 'Love''s sci-fi tension and 'Pain''s darkroom seduction, if you didn't back then the time to buy is now.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Three years on from the release of their acclaimed debut album, "Yr Body is Nothing", Augustus Miller and Jae Matthews are finally ready to release the second Boy Harsher full-length. It's a hugely atmospheric affair, with the lauded pair sashaying between moody creepiness (the slowly shifting musical dystopia of opener "Keep Driving"), guitar-flecked new wave ("Face The Fire"), arpeggio-driven alternative synth-pop ("Fate"), Pet Shop Boys-esque Italo-disco influenced throb-jobs ("LA"), EBM-driven dancefloor funk ("Come Closer", "Tears"), icy electronic soundscapes ("Crush") and immersive, wide-eyed ambient ("Careful"). It does sound like it could have been made around 1985, but that's precisely the point: Boy Harsher can certainly deliver well observed retro-futurism better than most.

Review: This new one from Boy Harsher is an extended version of their 2017 EP that's had four new tracks added to it. As a result is shows off the Massachusetts based duo's wide sonic range, starting with the shadowy but groovy "Motion" before taking in cold and jerking rhythms on "Electric" and mournful synth pop lullabies with "Country Girl." Slowing things down is the sparse and stark "Underwater" before "Send Me A Vision" turns all 80s pop. There's an infectious lead on "Westerners" that takes you back to the future and closes out a fantastic EP.

Review: Atlanta's DKA Records present the debut Boy Harsher LP, a duo between Augustus Muller and Jae Matthews that have two releases to their name already, one being self-released. This LP blends your favourite aspects of coldwave, night-time driving soundtracks with vocals that trip from breathy, pained and wailing in a way reminiscent of Tropic of Cancer, HTRK and The Human League combined. The music over all is downcast and in line with techno flavours of today while still has industrial as what you'd like to hear from Ministry, even Sick Puppy. There are lighter passages like "Morphine" which are completely danceable, as is "Big Bad John". A fresh new drop of synth wave music that's not on Minimal Wave, Dark Entries or Mannequin related - yes please.

Orgone Theory (19:13)
Hydra (15:55)
Review: Best known for his work as half of "minimal synth duo" Boy Harsher, Augustus Muller has a neat sideline in composing scores for experimental short films produced by his friends from the Four Chambers collective. "Machine Learning Experiments" offers up two of those scores on one must-check LP. A-side suite "Orange Theory" sees Muller confidently strut between creepy sci-fi ambience, thrusting Italo-disco influenced dancefloor workouts, more melodic and spaced-out synth-wave and clandestine, Vangelis-esque soundscapes. Over on side B, the "Hydra" soundtrack is an altogether more immersive affair, with Muller sticking to clandestine ambient and the kind of slowly throbbing fare that was once the preserve of John Carpenter.
