  5. Magic Mirror (Aufgang B remix) (5:06)
Review: Italy's Andrea Noce makes the perfect addition to Selva Elettrica's label, a collective of artists with a similar vision of electronic music. Fitting right in to the synth-pop-meets-coldwave aesthetic of the imprint, Noce delivers "Pray 4 Ca$h" as her opener, a house-driven slice of spacey pop that is further twisted into a more concrete club banger by Tormen Tonee. "Hawaii Bombay" is slower, drugged-out and tropical in its flavour, whereas "Magic Mirror" folds its heavy swarms of bass over placid melodies and luscious pads; anted-up and made bump-ready by a remix from Aufgang B. Lovely stuff.

Review: Just the one reissue this month from Dark Entries, but it's a real synthpop gem with Opera Multisteel's self titled debut from 1984 is granted a new edition. Aside from a cassette release in 1987, this is the first proper reissue and it presents the chance to get your hands on a truly rare, weird and wonderful piece of music. The vocals might be a tad conspicuous on first listen, but if you give them a chance to sink in you'll realise how quirky and special they really are. Each track stems form the same seed, a fast-paced, drum machine-led chant about life, love and loss.

  4. Interlude
Review: French label Desire spark up a full working relationship with pioneering producer Konrad Becker here following his commission to remix Ike Yard and their reissued edition of Monotonprodukt 07, his seminal early 80s album under the Monoton alias. Operations is Becker's latest creative endeavour and this four track Possession EP finds him operating in the crawlspace between synth pop, electronica and dub, seemingly exploring themes of a spectral nature with the assistance of vocalist Sela. Described by Desire as linking "21st century technology to ancient communication practices," the project is as political as it is dancefloor-focused and makes for compelling listening.

  4. Tu Es Le Star (4:51)
Review: Back in December, Genevieve Pasquier quietly returned to action after six years by contributing a remix of the previously unheard "Fairy Tale" to Frigio's The Midas Touch EP. The original version of that song takes pride of place on Reflection, alongside three other clandestine trips into industrial pop territory. It's all deliciously dark and moody stuff, with metallic drum machine percussion, fuzzy synth lines and the artist's own atmospheric vocals taking centre stage. We're particularly enjoying the buzzing guitars, low-slung groove and Nine Inch Nails attitude of "Bouge!", though the decidedly weird, crackly and sparse "Tu Es Le Star" is similarly impressive.

Review: California based husband and wife duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis are Peaking Lights - who present their tenth long player on Amsterdam's Dekmantel. The acclaimed live act deliver yet more of their trademark blend of electronic freakouts here with Dunis' outstanding vocal style throughout. From the stylish electro-pop noir heard on numbers like "Blind Corner" or "I Can Read Your Mind", the cosmo-psychedelic dub of "Hypnotized" through to the lo-slung punk-funk of "Shift Your Mind" and the blazed ambient chill-out of the title track.

Perfect High (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 183. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Perfect High (radio version) (5:13)
  2. Perfect High (instrumental) (4:23)
Review: Chris Garner, Jorg Burckhardt, Matthias Elvers, and Regina Petersen didn't release more than handful of EPs under the Peppermint guise, but what they did put out was as foundational and inspirational as more known electronic bands of the 80s like Liaisons Dangereuses. Dark Entries is responsible for this reissue, of course, a repress of an original going for near 100 bucks on the second-hand market, and this 1983 bomb has that rare characteristic of sounding retro and utterly fresh all at the same time. There's two mixes to the wonderfully wavy "Perfect High", and they both serve their own purpose; the radio edit, as you'd expect, is the one that gets the heads turning, its ominous bass charging menacingly amid the sweeter melodies and classic, new-romantic vocals, while the instrumental makes for the perfect beat companion to any serious cold wave DJ set.

  1. Paradise Island
  2. I Travel The World
Review: The latest Acido release sees the full debut of Karl Lukas Pettersson, aka Gothenburg's premier electro exponent Lukas Karl Pettersson who previously featured on Dynamo Dreesen's label back in 2007 under his familiar Luke Eargoggle alias. As Karl Lukas Pettersson, the Swede is evidently looking to explore a sound less trodden with both "Paradise Island" and "Travel The World" crafty concoctions formed from various elements of primitive wave and Das Ding style electro that sound convincingly like they were exhumed from DAT tapes in the late '80s. If you are a fan of Acido, you'll no doubt be used to such stylistic deviations from the label, but Dark Entries and Minimal Wave fans should also check these cuts!

  6. Jamaica Running (European remix) (5:00)
Review: Patrick Keel started his career as a drummer with various unsuccessful bands, before buying a synthesizer in 1980 and forming "one-man-band" The Pool. While he released numerous albums and singles over a five-year period, it's 1983 single "Dance It Down" that has stood the test of time. This Dark Entries reissue features the punchy, electro-influenced new-wave original and spacey Dub from the U.S 12", plus the lesser-known European Mix (closer in style to Italo-disco, though actually made by a Belgian). Arguably even better is flipside "Jamaica Running", where glistening melodies cluster themselves around a proto-dancehall rhythm, and its' stoned, pitched-down alternative mix, "Jamaica Resting".

  1. Can't Stop Shaking
  2. Dormant
Review: It's as if throughout the production process and mastering session of Profligate's Can't Stop Shaking EP faulty connections and loose wiring were intended to give the two tracks a distinctly broken timbre. The title track, infected with a T.V-static buzz, marches with the most basic, but effective, industrial back beat drums, while classic New York electro synths offer a "Can't Stop Shaking" its melody. "Dormant" on the other hand is more frenetic in its arrangement, as megaphone vocals treated to a band-pass filter are embedded into a gauzy crowd of harsh textures and arpeggiated chords that ebb and flow between the despondent and uplifting.

  3. Unveiling The Secret (exclusive re-edit)
  4. Ecstasy (Joseph Watt extended mix)
Review: Emotional Rescue make no attempt to hide their love of classic 80s cutters Razormaid's remixes, and on this occasion they're shining a light on the pumped up dancefloor versions of cult Canadian synthwave concern Psyche. The "US Club Mix" of "Eternal" is a perfect, swooning synth pop belter with weight in all the right places to work on the floor. "Prisoner To Desire (Alcatraz Mix)" is a snarling stomper that almost touches on acidic synth lines underneath the impassioned vocals, and then an exclusive re-edit of "Unveiling The Secret" ups the tempo while letting the catchy pop edge to Psyche's sound shine through. The record finishes with the fevered intensity of Joseph Watt's extended mix of "Ecstasy".

Review: Psychologist-turned-producer Andy Rantzen has never been particularly prolific, though we were surprised to learn that this 12" is his first solo single for the best part of 20 years (for the record, he released a digital-only album two years ago). It's an interesting and ear-pleasing affair that may raise a few eyebrows. Traditionally, he's delivered lo-fi electronica and experimental techno. On 1/66, three of the four tracks see him take a leisurely, freshly baked stroll through digital dub pastures. Of these, it's the thrillingly bass-heavy, ghostly digital dub of "Fantasy Dub" and stabbing "Green River" that most impress, though jaunty digi-dub opener "Rock Steady" may get most club plays.

  4. Death Machine (Antoni Maiovvi Nightstalking remix)
Review: Gerard Papasimakopoulos and Lucas Savidis aka The Rattler Proxy are making some of the best electro / sci-fi score music in Athens, Greece. The former takes care of the vocal end, while the latter indulges in deep, metallic synthesizers and together they are quickly carving their own sound and musical aesthetic. The title track "Death Machine" sits somewhere between Joy Division and the later cold-wave sound of the mid-to-late eighties, and Canada's Jokers Of The Scene transform it into a slow-stepping, synthed-out groover with an awesome array of mild pads and starry atmospherics. "Company Of The Wolves" is faster, break-ridden and owl-eyed, whereas Antoni Maiovvi's remix of the title track is perhaps the gem of the lot - an EBM kinda jam with plenty of shaking and low-end filth. Class.

Review: Raw formed during the summer of 1990 in Athens, Greece when keyboardist Giannis Papaioannou and percussionist Makis Faros started composing music for imaginary waiting rooms. They combined the traditional cut-up technique of tape-loops, the industrial timbres of musique concrete with the harmonics of world music, all filtered through digital sampling and computer programming. Their first recordings generated an 8 track demo, which was freely distributed among friends and the local underground press. After 6 months of work and several sessions with guest musicians on acoustic and electric instruments, Raw self-released their first album 'Land' in December 1991 on Elfish Records. In 1992 they recruited the band's sound engineer, Coti K., as a third member, both on stage and studio sessions. 'City' was their second album fully inspired by the mechanisms of their home town. Presenting a different electronic face of Raw, manipulating rhythms with analogue synthesizers and harsh sampling to evoke the atmosphere of Athens.

  4. The Nature & The Metal (7:07)
Review: Over the last decade, few have amassed as fine a catalogue of revivalist Italo-disco, EBM and synth-wave cuts than The Revolving Eyes. It's because of this that each new release from the Belgain duo is worth a listen. Predictably, there's plenty of dark and clandestine fodder to be found on The Nature And The Metal, their first release of 2018. Highlights include the foreboding horror chords, psychedelic acid lines and metronomic throb of "Beautiful Sadness", the rising orchestration and clicking drum machine hits of "Monotrance" and the ragged and distorted, acid-EBM fusion of the titanium-clad "Ritual Serenade". The title track, which closes the EP, is alo sublime: a clanking industrial workout smothered in far-sighted, futurist techno synths.

Recorded under the Sandra Plays Electronics banner, Her Needs presents two versions of the same track from different periods of O'Connor's musical development and provide further enticing historical evidence of one of techno's most illuminating figureheads. Those who indulged in the brilliant White Savage Dance 12" from Downwards from late 2011 will be all over the DIY odes to O'Connor's childhood heroes such as DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses here. The 1999 version in particular which originates from the same recording sessions that ended in the seminal Diversion Group release A Man Has Responsibilities.

Review: Imperious and unpredictable throughout the course of their releases in 2013, Dutch label Gooiland Elektro resurface with what we presume is their final two part transmission of the year, with the focus here on Swedish singer and songwriter Saralunden. The Gothenburg based Sara Lunden lands on the Enfant Terrible sub label with quite a discography to her name, operating on numerous DIY labels in her homeland and issuing everything from avant garde dark wave and synth pop to more downtempo fare. Some four tracks deep, the Suggestive Boy 12" will appeal to fans of acts like Chromatics or Sally Shapiro looking for something a bit darker, moody and world weary - "I Look Good" is a particular highlight.

Review: Belgian retroverts Stroom are back, and have plundered the vaults of one Patrick Selinger: a pianist and visual artist based in Antwerp, known for his work in groups such as Logo, One O One and Electric Dream. Under his own name, he had one release - 1981's Passion In The Air. Much like said release, "Businessmen" is an icy cold expression in minimal wave, with deadpan vocals, and haunting synths accompanied by rusty rhythms. More relevant to Selinger's work at present are the evocative piano based pieces on the B side, such as "Between The Time" or "Nature Boy".

Review: Aside from the wide spectrum of gorgeous post-punk and italo material that Dark Entries have been reissuing as of late, they've been earning some serious points from our end for their revival of so much material from Australia's Severed Heads. While the band are up there as one of our favorites from the 1980's, Dark Entries have picked exactly the right 12"s to reissue; "Lamborghini" is incredibly contemporary in sound, and it's subtle 4/4 kick allows its mild melodies and odd acoustics to fit above pretty much any house tune today. The same goes for "Petrol", a mild-tempered dance tune with minimal background vocals and a whole load of filter-attack quality. So recommended...

Review: Ahead of two albums worth of Severed Heads reissues on the excellent Medical Records, their West Coast compadres Dark Entries present a 12" edition of what is perhaps the band's most iconic track. One of three records due this month to celebrate Dark Entries fifth anniversary, this 12" is themed around "Dead Eyes Opened", perhaps Severed Heads' most iconic track and presented here in extended 12" mix version. Anyone with a passing interest in primitive electronics should be more than familiar with "Dead Eyes Opened" which sounds remarkably ahead of it's time even today. Both the B Side tracks from the original 1984 pressing make the cut too and Dark Entries have done a wonderful job in replicating the artwork too.
