Liberator (white vinyl 7")
Cat: CACHE 013. Rel: 22 Aug 14
  1. Liberator
  2. Summer
Review: Fresh and contemporary intergalactic reissue action from the ridiculously on-point Finders Keepers! For many old-school gamers and general niche nerds, the sounds of the inimitable Atari machines were the foundations of gaming culture. Never strictly available in soundtrack format until now, Suzanne Ciani's shimmering, quasi-techno sounds are the perfect example of the futurism that characterised the 1980s. This particular release features the opening theme and jingles from the Liberator game, which means that the wonderful Finders Keepers could certainly be planning another Atari-related release in the near future. He right, but in the meantime do not sleep on this badboy

Fish Music (Record Store Day 2017) (limited 1-sided clear vinyl 7" + insert)
Cat: FKSP 011. Rel: 17 May 17
  1. Fish Music (3:09)
Review: Record Store Day may have been and gone, but limited, must-have special releases continue to trickle in. This single-sided, clear vinyl 7" from the impressive Finders Keepers label should be an essential purchase for anyone interested in the pioneering, mind-altering electronic music of Suzanne Ciani. Taken from her vast archive of unreleased material, "Fish Music" was initially composed in 1977 for "infinite loop airings in a giant mid-American shopping mall". Ambient and fluid in tone, the nine-minute piece was largely created using Ciani's cherished Buchla synthesizer. That it sounds futuristic and out-there 40 years after it was composed says a lot about Ciani's far-sighted approach to music making.

  2. Thief Of Love (5:27)
  3. You Gotta Make It Loose (6:24)
Review: San Francisco's Honey Soundsystem are doing a good job in unearthing long-lost Patrick Cowley productions. Having previously joined forces with Dark Entries to release the pioneering producer's soundtrack to gay porn flick School Daze - and soon, a compilation of his other work for pornographic movies - they've decided to go solo on this 12". Kickin' In features a trio of previously unreleased Cowley disco workouts, recorded between 1975 and 1978. The real killer is the title track, a typically epic, 15-minute excursion that fuses Cowley's throbbing, masculine synthesizer lines with vocals and instrumentation from disco band Loverde. Flip for two groovy, low slung disco workouts that are, rather surprisingly, free of Cowley's usual Hi-NRG arpeggios. Instead, there are live basslines, organic percussion and decidedly sleazy spoken word vocals from the great man himself. In a word: essential.

  2. Elementals (8:17)
  3. Shimmering (Where Am I?) (11:40)
  4. Tantum Ergo (4:33)
  5. Tomato Song (1:01)
Review: The latest previously unheard Patrick Cowley material to get the Dark Entries treatment was recorded between 1972 and 1975, and made in collaboration with budding actress - and later feminist pornography icon - Candida Royalle. It was apparently intended for experimental theatre productions, and contains some of Cowley's most enthralling, out-there electronic experiments. Royalle's freestyle vocals take pride of place on the spacey, otherworldly opener "Candida Cosmica", before weaving in and out of Cowley's sparse, alien electronics on 12-minute B-side cut "Shimmering (Where Am I)?". Perhaps the most inspired track of the lot - and that's saying something - is the proto-ambient weirdness of "Elementals", which makes great use of fuzzy radio records and curious modular noises.

  1. Eller Ghyll (15:56)
  2. Tenter Ground (16:11)
Review: While Netherfield Works might, on first listen, sound a bit like the cosmic side of German rock music pioneered by the likes of Can or Cluster back in the early 70s, the album is very much a product of post-industrial Britain. To be precise, Craven Faults are from Yorkshire, and this is their protest - their view of an existential future laid bare by the downfalls of industrialist culture. Debuting via the newly formed Lowfold Works, this lot sound like they know exactly what they want to say, with two 15+ minute voyages showcasing their skills as musicians, and their vision as an outfit. "Eller Ghyll" bounces off the walls with its supremely echoed riffs and meandering basslines, sounding like an ode to the powers that be; "Tenter Ground" is comparatively gentler in its approach, launching a barricade of starry harmonies up into the sky along with a driving, hypnotic percussive roll that could well slot this into the deeper of DJ sets across the board. TIP!

  3. Funnt To You (2:49)
  4. Each To His Own (1:33)
  5. We Said We Wouldn't Look Back (4:24)
Review: The Dark Entries label continue their impressive run of form with another killer reissue LP, this time by The Prefects member Joe Crow. Compulsion was Crow's first solo work from the early '80s and has been a digger's favourite for a long time, its itchy drum machine beats and disjointed guitar riffs being utterly singular at the time of the album's initial release. "Compulsion" itself is a mid-tempo beat jam containing Crow's own dreary vocals and beautiful synthesized keys. "Absent Friends" is slower, full of languish and life at the same time, while on the B-side, "Each To His Own" is the winner thanks to its punky aesthetic surrounded by that early 80's electronic oddity. A masterclass piece of music and an essential collector's item.

  1. Another View
  2. Together In The Dark
  3. Together In The Dark (Inga Mauer remix)
  4. Another View (The Golden Filter Revision)
Review: Snap, Crackle & Pop does the business once again as Berlin-based producer Curses steps up with the distinctly 1980s new wave stylings of "Another View". It's the kind of track that will have lovers of early The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy et al dancing in a hazy fever dream where early goth and indie meets with contemporary beats. "Together In The Dark" makes the point even clearer with a brooding trip through languid guitar, beyond the grave vocals and scuffed drums. Inga Mauer takes an entirely different tact with her remix of the latter track, conjuring up a particularly chilling acid daemon to jangle the nerves before The Golden Filter spook out "Another View" with heavy doses of reverb.

Review: Having spent much of the last 12 months furiously re-issuing classic Italo-disco bombs, Dark Entries has finally got round to releasing some more contemporary cuts. The man behind this EP is Victor Lenis AKA Cute Heels, a Barcelona-based Colombian who last appeared on the imprint in 2014. As usual, the two new productions showcased here see him explore a range of vintage electronic music influences, presenting them in a typically stylish and authentic way. "Third Skin" melds the muscular sweatiness of EBM to the jackin' energy of Chicago acid, while "Lipstick Information" offers a master-class in dark Italo-disco and early Detroit techno fusion. Steffi and The Hacker both give the title track a thorough going over, with the former's deliciously hypnotic, psychedelic take being particularly potent.

  2. 16 (new mix) (5:01)
Review: Since Minimal Wave released a fine compendium of his early 1980s work as Das Ding back in 2009, Danny Bosten has become something of a cult artist. His latest missive on the re-born Tear Apart Tapes label is a tasty 7" featuring two new, all-analogue jams in his distinctive style. The title track is a boisterous and cheerily melodious affair, sitting somewhere between leftfield instrumental synth-pop and glistening Italo-disco. Flipside "16 (new mix)" is slower and more contemplative. It features bold electro bass, hip-hop tempo drum machine percussion, drowsy chords and woozy synthesizer melodies. It's the kind of analogue electronica that boasts a timeless quality, despite its contemporary construction.

Review: Though now famed as a top-drawer live performer with a string of acclaimed albums to her name, there was a time when Marie Davidson's music was less widely appreciated. In fact, when this eponymous EP first appeared on cassette in 2013, she was pretty much unknown. As you'd expect, it's perhaps a little more lo-fi than some of her more recent work, but that's what makes the EP so appealing. Check, for example, the sleazy vocals, distant drum hits and cascading melodies of creepy opener "Ma Vie Sans Moi", the unsettling lead lines, ricocheting cymbal hits and powerful drone bassline of "L'unique" and the dystopian, high-tempo minimal wave-goes-bleep techno trip that is "Le Lieu Ou Vous Voulez Vous Rendre"; all three remain amongst Davidson's most arresting cuts to date.

Review: Dark Entries has truly become a sensational imprint over the last few years, and they are showing no signs of stopping. In fact, they've just gotten better and better with each new release. We have a special one on our hands this time and, although the label have reissued a whole heap of glorious material, this is NEW music from the very best out there. Chicago industrial-tech-goth Beau Wanzer teams up with Unknown Precept's Maoupa Mazzocchetti, and the dup get on like a house on fire under their new De-Bons-En-Pierre moniker. Crepes is a gnarly little EP, blurring the lines between techno, EBM and industrial, but doing so in a way that makes the three genres sound like they should never ever be apart from one another. "Whole Body Irradiator", for instance, has all the beat elements of techno and yet the sounds are drenched in a punky, fuck-you kinda style that would make the Berghain faithful run for their lives, while we could easily imagine the torn, glitchy beats of "Francine" residing on some long-lost post-punk 7 inch from the likes of Pete Shelley. This is some mad gear - don't miss it.

  2. Consequences Of Love (Chris & Cosey remix) (5:47)
Review: Ahead of an impending, headline performance at this year's edition of Berlin Atonal, Richard Fearless opens up his Death In Vegas project to the Industrial icons that are Chris & Cosey. It's "Consequence Of Love," an early highlight of the most recent DIV LP, Transmission, that is the focus of attentions here, and arguably a track that looks to Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti's Throbbing Gristle for inspiration. The original version is presented here on 12" format for those Death In Vegas loving selectors out there who want a loud pressing of the track and the accompanying Chris & Cosey remix does take it to a different place. That breathy vocal is given more prominence and fairly dominates the remix.

Review: Junto Club kicked off Snap Crackle & Pop late last year, and now the label returns with the debut solo release from London-based outfit DEEDS. While Rollo and Kiri Inglis may have previously popped up on an obscure compilation on Anti-Ghost Moon Ray, this record should see their coldwave sound shoring up with many more adventurous listeners. "Video Dreams" is a beautifully melancholic slice of electronica while "Unknown" reaches for euphoric heights. Remixes from Bezier and The Field round the record out as a wonderful exercise in emotive home listening electronics for sensitive souls.

  1. Eagles In The Night (8:21)
  2. Eagles In The Night (instrumental) (6:23)
Review: Dario Dell'aere cut his teeth in obscure Italian synth-pop outfits Ice Eyes and Fockewulf 90, before attempting to launch a solo career in 1985. While that didn't go all that swimmingly, his lone solo single, Eagles In The Night, has long been considered a hard-to-find Italo-disco classic. Here, it gets the re-issue treatment from Dark Entries, who as usual replicate the original track listing and artwork. Slower and more atmospheric than many Italo-disco tracks of the time, Eagles In The Night draws influence from eyeliner-clad new wave pop of the period, with Dell'aere's unusual English vocals stretching out over chiming melodies, bubbling synth lines and dreamy chords. The potency of the original production is confirmed by the superior Instrumental version lurking on the flip.

Review: Throughout their near four-decade career, Depeche Mode have been smart at picking remixers. It should come as little surprise, then, that the CD version of "Where's The Revolution", the first single to be taken from forthcoming full-length Spirit, boasts a superb remix package. The original version - a typically dark fusion of synth-pop and rock produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford - is given a going over by French tecnno/electro sort Terrence Fixmer, Ewan Pearson (with a few additional touches here and there from pal and longtime collaborator Sasse), industrial/noise artist Algiers (AKA Ben Greenberg) and fast rising shoegaze duo Autolux, whose rework pits Martin Gore's vocals against their own distinctive backing track.

  4. Lose My Rhythm (Scott Fraser remix)
Review: Having first stepped out on Scissor & Thread and Holding Hands, Desert Sound Colony now bring their full-fat, guitartronic sound to Snap, Crackle & Pop. "Lose My Rhythm" is a monster of a track with an acid backbone that would sit right on a Factory Floor release, garnished with garage guitar twang and new wave vocals. "Suffocation" is a more playful jam that doesn't slouch on the production either - DSC straddle song structures and dance dynamics with ease. "The Blacksmith" brings a more bludgeoning, broken rhythmic slant to the group and the impact is just as visceral. Then Scott Fraser steps up to remix "Lose My Rhythm" and turns it into a lithe club track for the late hours when reality has fully slipped away from the floor.

  1. Anything, Anytime (extended version) (14:13)
  2. Anything, Anytime (Solomun remix) (7:34)
Review: Long serving International Deejay Gigolos boss DJ Hell is having rather a productive year. His latest release, which follows on from the unashamedly Kraftwerk-esque "Car, Car, Car", sees him explore a range of woozy, downtempo influences from the late '70s and early '80s. At 14 minutes long, the extended version of "Anything Anytime" is something of an epic. It never outstays its welcome, though, with Hell using it as an opportunity to tease out a woozy, lovable, heart-felt soundscape smothered in dirt-encrusted electronics, warm vintage synthesizer flourishes and a quirky vocoder vocal. And, of course, some rather odd modular pulses. Solomun provides a more dancefloor-centric remix on the flipside, smartly re-inventing the track as a chunk of bubbling dancefloor electro.

  1. Oak Wood (4:51)
  2. Egress (2:49)
Review: Los Angeles based Andrew Cinco first started out in the local trio Marriages, until forming the solo project Drab Majesty in 2015. He's fast become a regular on the local imprint Dais - label boss Gibby Miller has released two LPs (2015's Careless and this year's Demonstration) in addition to a bunch of EPs: this being the third thus far. Oak Wood is dedicated to Cash Askew, the frontwoman of Them Are Us Too, who sadly perished in the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland earlier this year. The sombre synth-pop of the title title track creates a captivating contrast with its sugary synth arpeggios offset by gothic vocals. On the flip, "Egress" makes use of shoegaze guitars in a similar fashion to the artist it is dedicated to, across its splendid three minute duration. For those of you who have not seen it yet, we would highly recommend Jason Blalock's documentary 'In The Wake Of The Ghost Ship' which gives an informative history into the Ghost Ship venue, in addition to other similarly important DIY venues across the United States: which are now facing an uncertain future in the wake of the tragedy.

Cat: MFM 026. Rel: 08 Nov 17
  1. Skin 'N' Bones (5:15)
  2. Dub Oven (4:24)
  3. Millions Of Sensations (4:09)
Review: You'd be forgiven for being unfamiliar with the work of short-lived San Francisco band Dub Oven. After all, they only released one 12" single way back in 1983, and that was a self-released, private-press affair. Happily, the dusty-fingered diggers behind Music From Memory are big fans and here offer up a re-mastered reissue. Amazingly, each of the three tracks explores different sonic territory. Contrast, for example, the Tom Tom Club-goes-synth-funk eccentricity of lead cut "Skin 'n' Bones" and "Dub Oven", a thrillingly spaced-out chunk of no-wave/electro fusion that sounds like it could have been beamed down from another universe. Then there's closer "Millions of Sensations", which sits somewhere between Japanese new wave ambience and the post-punk funk of Bristolian outfits The Pop Group and Maximum Joy.
