Review: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Carla Dal Forno was once a member of a number of legendary Australian outfits. These days, the Melbournian resides in Berlin, which is presumably where she met Blackest Ever Black boss Kiran Sande. He loved her clandestine, atmospheric take on pop - think minimal wave, cold-wave and early Joy Division mixed with contemporary ambience, and leftfield synth-pop - and has decided to put out this debut album. Comprised of four songs and four instrumentals, You Know What It's Like has a timeless feel; the folksy, Scott Walker-influenced "Dry In The Rain", for example, sounds like it could have been recorded at any point over the last 40 years, while "Dragon Breath" has a genuine Radiophonic Workshop feel.

Review: The Chilean producer based in New York City Nicolas Jaar presents his new album entitled Sirens. This is his first solo album since 2011's Space Is Only Noise LP and released on his own Other People imprint. Jaar has been involved in various projects over the years, such as Darkside (with multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington), while last year he released Pomegranates, a collection of ambient tracks provided as an alternative soundtrack to the 1969 film The Colour of Pomegranates. The LP is six tracks that "flow seamlessly" between each other. According to a press release, the album is "Jaar's most topically cohesive and politically-minded record to date."

Review: Given the underground acclaim heaped on Marie Davidson's previous albums - ultra-stylish affairs that blend elements of minimal wave, dark Italo-disco, off-kilter electro and moody ambient - it's little surprise to see her popping up on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. The album's nine tracks are largely sharp, rough and fuzzy, with sparse-but-dense drum machines rhythms underpinning bouncy, delay-laden synth lines, thrusting electronics and Davidson's sleazy, spoken word vocals. It's an attractive combination that guarantees thrills throughout, from the almost claustrophobic throb of "Denial", to the mutant electrofunk bounce of "Good Vibes".

Review: "The idea was simply to make an ambient album", Dr Alex Paterson has said of The Orb's new album entitled Chill Out, World!. With partner in crime Thomas Fehlmann, the duo resisted looking back and studying their earlier (seminal) recordings and opted for a more spontaneous approach: a focus on where they are at today in 2016. COW is said to have been completed over the course of five sessions in only six months, between a relentless touring schedule which they also credit as being hugely influential on the album's sound. As always, strap yourself in for an immersive sound experience and possibly expect to hear some of the more courageous DJs dropping likes likes of "4am Exhale (Chill Out, World!)" or perhaps "Just Because I Really Really Luv Ya". Oh and the track titles are as baffling as ever too.

Review: To date, Laurene Exposito's Eye project has remained a steadfastly cassette-only affair. Sabine not only marks the moody electronic maverick's first appearance on vinyl, but also her debut full-length excursion. Drawing together complimentary influences such as dark Italo-disco, no wave, minimal-wave, proto-techno and EBM, the album sees Exposito pepper dark, stylish instrumentals and sparse, heartfelt grooves with distinctively strange vocals. It's a formula that frequently hits the mark, particularly on the drowsy, loved-up "You're So Fine", the trippy title track, and the bombastic, alien techno weirdness of "Undress". Best of all, though, is the poignant melodiousness of closing track "Soft Grey Moon".

Machina 1.1 (3:50)
Machina 1.2 (4:08)
Review: With a discography stretching back to the mid-noughties, the Revolving Eyes have been paying tribute to EBM, new beat and minimal wave long before it was fashionable to do so. It's perhaps for this reason that Ex Machina, their first single since 2007, is so hotly anticipated. The genius of both "Machina 1.1" and "Machina 1.2" lies in the Belgian duo's ability to combine authentic synthesizer and drum machine sounds, with both classic '80s alternative tropes and the hypnotic, booty-shaking fluidity of acid house. This is particularly evident on the deliciously wonky, mind-altering pump of flipside "Machina 1.2", where bubbly electronics and tweaked acid lines ride a no-nonsense drum machine groove.

Tomato Song (1:01)
Review: The latest previously unheard Patrick Cowley material to get the Dark Entries treatment was recorded between 1972 and 1975, and made in collaboration with budding actress - and later feminist pornography icon - Candida Royalle. It was apparently intended for experimental theatre productions, and contains some of Cowley's most enthralling, out-there electronic experiments. Royalle's freestyle vocals take pride of place on the spacey, otherworldly opener "Candida Cosmica", before weaving in and out of Cowley's sparse, alien electronics on 12-minute B-side cut "Shimmering (Where Am I)?". Perhaps the most inspired track of the lot - and that's saying something - is the proto-ambient weirdness of "Elementals", which makes great use of fuzzy radio records and curious modular noises.

Review: Having previously been responsible for a number of themed compilations for Versatile Records, the Acid Arab crew has finally got round to delivering its' first album of original productions. Naturally, it continues their theme of blending North African and Middle Eastern sounds - be it vocals or instruments - with drum machine rhythms and vintage synthesizer sounds. This, though, is where the similarities to their previous work end. While there are a few house-influenced cuts dotted throughout (see the brilliant "Sayarat 303"), for the most part Musique De France veers further towards off-kilter electronic pop. Along the way, they doff a collective cap to new wave, punk-funk, and hazy indie-pop. While it may lack the crackling energy of their more dancefloor-minded productions, it's still a hugely enjoyable set.

Review: The recording debut of a joint effort between Jordan Czamanski of Juju & Jordash and Ilya Ziblat Shay. These improvised sessions of psychedelic/freeform experimentalism will surely have you travelling without moving. Starting out with the woozy ambient drone of "Dayworld", you'll soon after be led into the exotic via "Track 2" until the wicked remix of "Dayworld" by Parisian I:Cube gets some funky and lo-slung dancefloor dynamic injected into it. Finally, the charmingly titled "Shit Bird" goes in for an avant-garde sound composition that's contemplative as much as it is riveting on this amazing four minute auditory journey you'll wish had lasted much longer.

Review: During the early-to-mid 1980s, Washington D.C-based musician Richard Simms crafted his own leftfield, punk-minded take on electronic funk under the Wicked Witch alias. While built around popping electro drums and headline-grabbing synths, Simms' work was thoroughly experimental in outlook, and has subsequently become cult listening. This first plate of this excellent double-pack contains a freshly re-mastered version of one of his best cuts, "Under Your Spell", Simms' new re-make of the same track (it's even wilder, but also more melodic, interestingly), and two previously unreleased gems. Meanwhile, the second disc boasts a brilliantly heavy, floor-friendly, breakbeat-driven remix of "Take A Bite Of Brains" by DJ Slyngshot, and a thrillingly wonky, acid-driven interpretation of "In The Way Of WSB" by YYPYY.

Review: Stefano Torossi and Sandro Brugnolini remain an important part of Italy's early wave of electronic musicians. The latter was particularly prolific throughout the '70s and '80s, but it was 1969's Musica Per Commenti Sonori that helped the two gain traction among international listeners, and helped to pave the way for later generations of both Italian and foreign experimental musicians. Schema has reissued the original on Costanza Records this time, and we gotta say that these are sounding as crisp and vivid as the original versions. There's a little bit of everything in here, from funk breaks to balearic ambience, and even wild strains of psychedelia, but what is most striking about this album is its ability to offer quality sampling material to almost any type of artist. Whether you're into crafting hip-hop beats, or house and even techno, there will be something in here for you. And if you want to simply listen, that's fine too, of course...

Review: Steve Hauschildt is no newcomer to the blossoming ambient scene, having released his first album almost a decade ago. In that time, he's earned a reputation for crafting genuinely poignant electronic music that neatly sidesteps ambient's various stylistic cliches. There's plenty to get excited about on this latest full-length - his fourth for venerable Chicago institution Kranky - starting with the sun-bright, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer arpeggios of the brilliant "Same River Twice". Elsewhere, he gets stunningly melancholic on the drifting beauty of "A False Seeming", doffs a cap to Global Communication and Steve Hillage on the glistening positivity of "Ketracel", and gives Pete Namlook a run for his money on the spacey wonder of "Strands".

Review: The story of Puccio Roelens begins way back in 1969, a time when the 'exotica' sound was at its peak, and when electronic music really started to have an impact on the rest of the global scene. Constanza Records, from the late 60s through to the late 70s, was responsible from some truly pioneering work by a small selection of artists from around the globe. Roelens was one such artist, a producer who contributed to the infamous series named Musica Per Commenti Sonori, or 'music for sonic comments'. His particular contribution was entitled Lipstick, and explored the vast possibilities of disco, a genre that was at its height at the time, but that was beginning to take on new influences that would eventually transform it into boogie. This album is a special piece of work, a collection of sublime disco tracks with an experimental edge. The more you listen, the more you want. TIP!

Each instant as cosy, poignant and emotionally rich as the last, Breum's ambience and cool sense of contemporary classical is showcased at its finest. The whole trip is a whirlwind of star-gazing soul but surefire standouts have to be the nylon string plucking Balearic bliss-out "Dive", the oceanic synth washes and delicate folds of "Bright Lights" and the striking keystroke confidence of "Blueberries". Delicious.

He here presents a four-disc vinyl package from homeboy Franco Digregorius, which follows up Australian producer Little Nobody's prior release. Said to be compiled from productions spanning the last decade, the album covers several variations on the electro sound but often delivered in rather inventive formats and with some funny titles. There's some aquatic electro funk stylings on "Ladyes & Gentelman From Montevideo Underground", the hilariously dark George W. Bush sampling "Mind Traveller" and the very hypnotic 13 minute long epic "Brain Washing".

Review: Canada's Junior Boys have been running the synth-pop game since the late 90s and, in our eyes, they're as fundamental to the scene as other outfits like Hot Chip or Simian Mobile Disco. They are now made up of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, and this time they return with a follow-up EP to their recent album for Christof Ellinghaus' City Slang. "Yes" is a delightful pseudo-house number with the boys' vocals riding the crest of the wave, and "Baby Fat" feels like a natural progression thanks to its soft house beats and watery lyrics. The B-side features "Some People Are Crazy", a sublime electronica piece with a sunken, moody tone that encapsulates them perfectly as a group, while "Kiss Me All Night" flaps its stuttering beats and sonic waves to a rigged husk of vocals. Bang.

Review: Oren Ambarchi's wild and far-reaching electronic productions have been shaking the underground world since the late 90s and, just to reiterate the obvious, the producer has been a major part of seminal electronic labels such as Touch, Black Truffle and, of course, the present Editions Mego, always a source of quality output across every corner of the experimental scene. "Hubris", his latest sonic deviation, is made up of three parts; three segments which span from glitchy pseudo techno to the totally acoustic. Part 1 is a glorious escapade down the deepest and most magnetic corners of electronic dance, recalling Craig Leon at his best, while Part 2 offers intricate guitar manipulations, and Part 3 breaks out the improv free-jazz in an unwieldy fashion. Riffs, distortion, noise, percussion, energy, and endless experimentation in every way. Wonderful.

This time around it's another local producer in the form of NIKA-KOI aka Nika Machaidze, who had releases in the early '90s on Berlin's seminal WMF and has most recently been producing films. The collection of tracks on Raise Your Head & Smell The Air definitely have a cinematic soundtrack feel to them, covering a wide variety of moods that create the right type of atmosphere. We really enjoyed HVL's deep and broken take on the title track, the deep and hypnotic dreamstates captured on "How Is She There In The Fog" or I Can't Even See My Paw".

Review: Paris label Collapsing Market has scored something of a coup here by tempting Lust For Youth frontman Lars Hannes Norvide away from regular home Posh Isolation. NNN is the latest missive to emerge from his recently minted Norin alias, which was apparently established to allow for more "techno-focused" productions. The four tracks showcased here are far from straight-up techno club tracks, of course, with rhythms created from cyclical electronic motifs, rather than traditional drum machine percussion. Winding, creepy and occasionally intense, the tracks bob and weave seductively, seemingly tempting listeners to succumb to the Swede's unsettling musical vision.

Review: The Hen Ogledd collective, made up of Dawn Bothwell, Rhodri Davies and Richard Dawson, have been missing in action since 2013, which is a shame because we've been on the hunt for this sort of spaced-out, pseudo drone that only artists are able to conjure in the same way as them. They're back on Alt.Vinyl, nuttier and more freaky than before, carrying with them six twisted slices of deranged ambient music for the open-minded. "Ancient Data" starts off like a jungle, filled with noises, creatures and all sorts of mischief, but this chaos transforms into rhythm on the supremely lo-fi "Gondoliers". A cascade of spectral sonics emanate from "Beyond Belief", "Amputated Video" breaks out the noise, "Gwawr In Reverse" sounds like something out of a David Lynch movie, and "Get My Name Right Or Get Out!" finishes off with one final plunge into the abyss...the bottomless abyss. Excellent and warmly recommended.
