Mungolian Jetset presents Knights Of Jumungus - "The Dark Incal"
Review: Mungolian Jetset's Pal Nyhus, aka DJ Strangefruit, is one of the unsung heroes of Norwegian electronic music. While nowhere near as celebrated as compatriots Hans-Peter Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and "Todd" Terje Olsen, he's been the glue that holds the Oslo disco scene together for the best part of a decade. His project with studio don Knut Saevik is consistently excellent - and fittingly, their new offering Mungoldelics starts with a bang. Opener "Toccato" starts off sounding like a cosmic disco take on Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians, before morphing into a thrillingly Scandolearic fusion of spine tingling marimba melodies and trippy, darkroom electronics. There's much more to explore here - a string of collaborations (Balearic types Athana, Norwegian pop singer Unni and electronica/jazz fusionists Jaga Jazzist all feature), a handful of strange new pseudonyms (Knights of Jumungus anyone?) and the occasional original production. It's pretty much a brand new Mungolian Jetset album proper; it doesn't sound like anything else.

Review: Man of many aliases (Conforce, K2vx, Mi-24, Vernon Facility, Versalife) Boris Bunnik launches another pseudonym, Silent Harbour, with an album of quiet atmospherics on Denmark's bastion of all things deep and ambient, Echochord. While his more familiar Conforce work is bluntly rhythmical and formidably dancefloor focused, Silent Harbour is an altogether more out-there beast. Blessed with his usual keen ear for atmospherics, much of the material sits somewhere between sparse ambience, hypnotic dub techno and glitchy IDM. It makes for an enjoyable and rewarding listen, as Bunnik flits between bubbling mood pieces of "Profundal Zone", smacked-out soundscapes such as "Saltwater Intrusion" the and icy introspection that characterizes "Movement".

Review: Since first emerging in early 2011, Jon Convex has become something of a surprise poster boy in the world of techno/bass music fusion. Following a string of hyped released on Nonplus, 3024, Naked Lunch and his own Convex Industries imprint, Damon Kirkham now releases his much anticipated debut set Idoru. What's most impressive about this collection is how it perfectly demonstrates Kirkham's ability to inject copious amounts of subtle funk into warm, glitchy techno and melody-rich post dubstep grooves. To prove his adaptability, there are also forays into tougher territory (the booming "Aversion"), Detroit electro ("No Love", "Idoru") and post-rave peaktime jams (the near anthemic "What I Need").

Review: Icelandic producer Yagya (AKA Reykjavik resident Aoalsteinn Guomundsson) has enjoyed a long but unusual career. Unlike many producers, he's chosen to focus almost entirely on albums, sporadically releasing impressive sets that join the dots between ambient, downtempo and dub techno. The Inescapable Decay of My Heart, his fourth solo full-length, continues this trend, offering a range of melodic, melancholic, emotion-rich cuts that shuffle between the speakers at an impressively sedate pace. The first disc features a range of impeccable vocal cuts interspersed with occasional glacial instrumentals, while the second boasts slightly more club-friendly, vocal free tweaks. As home listening fodder goes, it's superb from start to finish.

Review: Having released little more than a trio of well-received 12" singles, Italian producer Claudio Brioski delivers a debut album for London-based nu-disco heavyweights Nang. Sitting somewhere between the pulsating dancefloor tackle of fellow countryman Bottin and the vintage synthesizer doodles of Emperor Machine, Hype Nothing is a pleasing trawl through off-centre nu-disco pastures. Musically, it also touches on glistening synth-pop - see the jaunty vocal cuts "Last Day Here" and "Panic"- and moody Italo revivalism ("Scandal Echo", the Robotnik-ish "Radio Anatomy"), while retaining an effortless air of nerdy synthesizer fetishism. That's some feat.

Review: Alex Cowles first unveiled his DFRNT moniker back in 2008, with an EP of deep, dubstep-influenced ambience and horizontal electronica. Having followed that up with an album and a multitude of singles for On The Edge, he returns to original Echodub with his second album, Fading. Those who've followed his career to date will feel right at home with its quiet, shuffling mix of blissful refrains, cozy samples and spacious grooves. While the bassy rhythms of dubstep remain a cornerstone of his outlook, there are also successful forays into dub techno, deep house and drone ambient territory - making Fading an engrossing listen.

Review: As one of jungle's originals, there was a time when Ray Keith was one of the heaviest hitters in the drum and bass scene. These days, his star has waned a little and is known more as Joy Orbison's uncle, but he still retains the ability to rock a dancefloor. For those of a certain vintage, I Am Renegade - his first new album in three years - should be a bit of a treat. Devoid of contemporary thrills - bar a trip into deeper territory in the shape of "Stardust" - it recycles the amen-heavy brand of hard-hitting jungle and hardcore with which Keith made his name during the 1990s. As such, it's a thrilling blast from the past.

Review: The minimal techno of Wishmountain was one of Matthew Herbert's first musical endeavours, and some fifteen years after Wishmountain Is Dead, the one album he recorded under the name, the producer has elected to return to the project with a new album that explores similarly uniquely conceptual ideas. As the title suggests Tesco was loosely inspired by a trip to his local supermarket, with the elements of each track made exclusively from the sounds of the ubiquitous high street supermarket chain's most popular items (according to a 2010 survey in The Grocer magazine) The results are as glitchy and leftfield as you'd expect from a contrary producer such as Herbert and the set of oddly driving tunes that pop, rumble and shuffle with spliced-up intent make for infinitely more palatable listening than his previous Pig based work.

Review: East German producer Karten Kaufman dons his Nick Sole hat to deliver a first full-length for the Mojuba label. Sole has been around the deep house scene since the mid 2000s, but has little more than a handful of 12" singles to his name. Clearly, he's a perfectionist. This attention to detail is evident on Flowers For You, which offers clean, atmospheric deep house with all the warming breeziness of a Mediterranean sea breeze. There are, of course, more muggy moments - see the double bass and twinkling chords of "Money" or the chunky "Deep Sundown" - but the overriding feel is relentlessly sunny.
