Pertu
Amp
Boariam
Review: It's the first light of day for both Vrac and Subtil Records, so with no background to go on it's pure face value for this new production partnership. In line with the strong current of minimal records of recent times, there's a range of grooves from linear patterns to breakbeat flows, with plenty of space for sound design and experimentation around those featherweight frameworks. "Pertu" in particular features some playful sounds and samples that echo out in the plentiful space afforded, while "Amp" gets into a more techy frame of mind with its sci-fi synth sounds. "Boariam" rounds things out with a more rolling rhythm and plenty of dubby textures for a less surgical approach to production.

Time & Space
Sun2216
Shakeuit
Adagio or Truism
Review: Lazar Cezar doesn't release that much but each new record from him or his Understand label is worth the wait. For starters, the four tracks that appear across two heavy weight 12"s - with bespoke artwork - boast an obvious pride behind the release, and the same can be said for the production. The EP's highlight is the knee-deep pops and gurgles of "Time & Space" that surface to bubble around dampened beats and irregular-to-regular hi-hat and snare patterns. Listen to it and it's almost like being caught inside a floating blob of it. "Sun2216" is very deep, and so subtle that in parts it's almost not there - you can only just make out what sounds like snippets of spiritual teachings by Jiddu Krishnamurti. The A-side of Om Vedea's second disc, "Shakeuit", is more for the dancefloor thanks to its workman-like minimal techno that doesn't stop, while "Adagio or Truism" is tonal, trippy and ultimately experimental heat from the heart of Bucharest.

Alco B (Birdsmakinmachine remix)
Broken Amp
Review: With their debut year already witnessing their fourth release, Dilated Pupils are clearly onto a good thing. Following on from the excellent 241020 EP on Mode Of Expression, this latest 12" on Sol Asylum features more soul-dipped minimal house rhythms for the ethereal heads out there. "Lost Evidence" has a purposeful shuffle to it, but the real star is the thick swathe of pad that drifts through the track. "Alco B" meanwhile features a rougher broken beat that meets with heavy-lidded melodic matter, before Birdsmakingmachine remix the track into an even more hypnotic micro-breakbeat tryst. "Broken Amp" finishes the EP off with a set of barely-there drums and epic strokes of chord.

Walking With Elephants
Nochnoy Dozor
Review: After the success of their Innervisions and Life and Death releases, Lithuanian duo Ten Walls set themselves up for a hat trick with the rousing tones of this EP for new label BOSO. The title track in particular tugs at the emotional nerves via a powerful line in orchestral strings, replete with a sturdy rhythmic backbone and some accompanying horn parps that add to the epic feel of the tune. On the flip, "Nochony Dozor" opts for a more heated concoction of synths that range from rotating sirens to washing pads, with a looming bass tone underpinning the action and spelling out the melodic end of proceedings.

Sesshu
Ludwig
Review: Debutant producer Takashi Himeoka is the latest unfamiliar talent to grace the wax that Swiss label RORA puts out, further demonstrating that the label's gift is in digging for fresh sounds devoid of hype. On this EP in particular, the tone is a dusty, jazzy one, as played out through stripped down, hypnotic house music with a seedy underbelly. "Sesshu" sits atop a rounded double bass lick while the beat brushes away with an understated grooviness, both laidback and eminently danceable at the same time. "Ludwg" takes things even deeper, simmering the drums down to a subtle murmur and letting atmospheric touches of piano chord and gentle hum shape out an eerie, Lynchian sound world.

Drop & Run
Burn For Love
Review: Absent from the Perlon release schedule since contributing A Cat Called Mice back in 2011, Amsterdam's resident Doctor San Proper returns to Zip and Markus Nikolai's cultish label with Yestoday. The three tracks here continue where San Proper left off with is recent Pet = Master EP for Arma, with the title track one of the funkiest tracks committed to the Perlon catalogue in some time. The DJ tool "Drop & Run" could easily work its way into a straight up house set, though it's still got plenty of those production idiosyncrasies one expects from San Proper, speaking of which "Burn for Love" is positively filled with them. The only question that remains is who is going to helm Perlon 100?

Julia
Tiberius
Review: Canadian violinist Owen Pallett lends a hand to Dan 'Caribou / Daphni' Snaith on this latest bout of rootsy grooves for his more club ready venture, and the results are rather startling. "Julia" rides on a bumping drum beat that sounds as though it were fashioned out of solid oak, while Pallett's string chops come in dramatic side strokes to add a sense of danger to an already tense situation. "Tiberius" meanwhile has a more techno-orientated outlook, while the strings this time come in nerve-shredding discordant formations that conjure up a fire-and-brimstone party scenario for the more apocalyptically minded dancer.

Procrastination
Anytime But Later
Review: You can always count on Minibar to bring the shuffliest, twitchiest end of the micro-house spectrum, and in Vedren & Leiris they have found a pair of likeminded Frenchmen to help them further their funky intentions. "Procrastination" sports a heavily swung beat that's busy and stripped down in the same breath, with some oddball slices of vocal hopping around the mix for decoration. "Anytime But Later" is marginally tougher in its demeanour, but the same rules of lean mean rhythmic business remains, heading deep into the details and maximizing on the space around the sounds.

Liues Midav - "Retroviseur"
Pap Inc - "Ralf Beckett"
Review: If you don't recognise either of the Pap Inc or Liues Midav names that line this latest release from the Eklo label don't worry. It turns out Eklo founder Seuil is responsible for both tracks here, which according to the label are the "fruits of a diverse collaboration" with compatriot and rising producer Vadim Svoboda. Listen carefully to both "Retroviseur" and "Ralf Beckett" and that much becomes apparent anyway, with the former notable for the jittery funk that keeps trying to escape the stripped back groove that keeps matters on a forward trajectory. Those wanting something with a bit more swing will love "Ralf Beckett" which pays subtle homage to the filter house that French producers excelled at.

Shall Ocin - "Lurking Wolves"
FiberRoot - "Space Localizer"
Review: Argentinean producer Nicolas Abalos continues his impressive run under the Shall Ocin guise with this split release on Ellum Audio following some well received 12" transmissions for Leftroom Limited, ALiVE and Culprit. You may think Lurking Wolves vs Space Localizer is a curious title, but it simply refers to the name of two tracks here as Shall Ocin shares sides on a 12" with another Ellum Audio debutant in the shape of Spanish production talent FiberRoot. "Lurking Wolves" is both trippy and driving, the kind of FX heavy number you'd hear deep into a Maceo Plex set, whilst "Space Localizer" from FiberRoot is a masterclass in tension and emotional release.

Semi-Floating Objects
Semi-Flying Objects
Review: Haunting minimalisms packed full of subtle cheekiness and clubby vibes is what "Semi-Floating Objects" is all about, and you can really hear the machines and the people behind them bring this track to life. Meanwhile on the flip there's a watery, acid house touch to "Semi Flying Objects" that maintains the danceable, club construction of this track, which all the while keeps in theme with the spooky purposes and atmospheres of this 12". Turn the lights down for these two.

End Of Days (6:51)
Party Time (7:11)
Blue Horizion (7:14)
Along The Way (6:59)
Review: One of the windy city's most recognised exponents of Chicago house, Boo Williams, returns to the German run Chiwax label for the second time following last year's orange Pleasant Dreams 12". There's no denying the tracks on this red Last Of The Past 12" are the types that so many try to imitate; like the basic, but perfect one-two bassline of "End Of Days", or the filter sweeps and slinky keys of "Party Time". Then there's "Blue Horizon", a bassline driven club track that sounds like a mellow Fanon Flowers cut from his Studio Sounds label, while "Along The Way" is what you'd imagine an Autumn-time soundtrack to Chicago's south side would sound like.

Grow Man Cry
Review: Al hail the return of the Aphrohead! Over twenty years on from Felix 'Da Housecat' Stallings first surfacing under the Aphrohead guise, the US production and DJ legend is set to explore the alter ego with a new album length adventure slate for release on Crosstown Rebels later in the year. Whilst full details of this sixth studio album from Aphrohead are still under wraps, the Crosstown crew have laid down a marker for what to expect in the shape of Grown Man Cry. One sided white labels are geared for the clubs and that's certainly the case here as Felix offers up a slab of no nonsense emotionally weighted house music that's an exercise in wringing the maximum impact from the minimum of elements. Stallings production expertise really comes to the fore here as subtle filtering is implemented over a relentlessly jacking 909 groove.

Track 3
Review: Tapping into the rude health of the minimal scene at present, East End Dubs continues his self-released series with some seriously pared down bits and pieces. "Track 1" uses a wide range of percussion to spell out its particular purpose, which is one of pure, interlocking rhythm with nowt but a taut bass hit for company. "Track 2" lets a little colour into the mix with some melancholic dubby chords quietly pulsing out across the proceedings, while the beat stays lean and dutiful so as to not confuse matters. "Track 3" rounds things out with a trickier beat and a more mysterious air, using a subtle drone to shape out the cut while avoiding getting into an overly regimented 4/4 pulse in favour of weightless broken beat shenanigans for the deepest of moments.

The Clapping Track (Solomun remix)
Urban Animal (Dixon dub mix)
Review: Given the respect of his peers Claude Von Stroke brandishes, it's little surprise to discover the high standard of contributing artists involved in Urban Animal Remixed, a self explanatory addendum collection of remixes to the Dirtybird boss's third LP Urban Animal. Photek, Jimmy Edgar, Krust, Dixon, and Solomun all contribute to the upcoming collection, offering both pedigree and diversity, with the efforts from the two latter producers included on this 12" sampler. In Solomun's hands "The Clapping Track" is transformed into a floor friendly house cut that will be servicing many Croatian evenings this summer, whilst Dixon works his magic on the album's title track.

The Groove That Won't Stop (remix)
Review: There's no shortage of quality gear for team Saunderson to mine out of the KMS archives, and so it is as we get the rave-friendly tones of "The Sound" coming to us on a fresh repress, with the "Power Remix" making all the right moves for a tried and tested party rocker, from the loose breakbeat to the cheeky samples. "Tranzister" meanwhile brings a full fat acid workout to the table, and "The Groove That Won't Stop" slows things down without letting up on the 303 action. The remix of "The Groove That Won't Stop" adds a more fluid breakbeat roll and some spiritual pad refrains into the proceedings without losing the original flavour of the track

November Rain (Mario Basanov remix)
Review: Fresh off introducing the Watergate Files from US house legend Kerri Chandler, Watergate's label branch look much closer to home for their latest transmission with new resident Matthias Meyer offered the chance to showcase his productions. Meyer's got a respected production pedigree with output on the Liebe Detail label dating back to 2006 and he seems a perfect fit for the Watergate label, a notion that's only strengthened after checking the Becuz EP. There's an atmospheric density to the organ-hooks and shredded vocals on the title track which doesn't derail the sense of forward momentum offered by the driving groove, whilst "November Rain" demonstrates Meyer's equally adept at crafting lighter productions. Mario Basanov remixes the latter track, adding a dash more colour and suppleness to proceedings with sacrificing the mood.

Review: The dubby rattle of Ana's "Stretching Infinity" gets this EP off to a deep and groovy start, setting the tone of the EP before moving into the techy "Ninie-San" that slithers like a long anaconda through a jungle of swishing white noise and dark tribalisms. "Shalabass" lifts in tempo and mood while still remaining downbeat and dirty - proper Bar25 stuff (may the club rest in peace) - while "Niuu Bubbles" is an industrial-coated minimal and dubby house jam that constantly verges on crossing over into techno.

Review: Norwegian producer Alexander Skancke has been finding form of late on his string of releases for Neostrictly with a distinctive take on glitchy micro house, and he's back for a third round with more of that tweaked out good stuff. You have a twitchy, sample-laden collision of digital processes on "Borg", and some more slender computer funk on "Kef" which calls to mind the shuffling business that the Trimsound label was renowned for. "Reyk" too keeps things in a more streamlined frame of mind with a choice spread of squelchy sounds and effects to keep minimally minded groovers shaking til the cows come home.

Review: For the heads of deep, reputable house music driven by minimalism, groove and soul, Dean DeCosta is a name spoken about with the same regard as people like Steve O'Sullivan and Don Williams, having released on labels like Mosaic, Sushitech and now Styrax. The influential Berlin label has turned its curatorial eye to the past of late, and now some of DeCosta's material gets a new injection of life with Stryrax plucking some DDC classics for a four-track EP of music sourced from the producer's short, but influential production career (1999-2002). If you're new to Dean DeCosta's music this is a great starting point, while for those all too familiar with Costa's slinky moves, here's a chance to replace those worn, 15-year-old grooves.
