Review: Phoebe Bridgers' wildly acclaimed Punisher album has four tracks taken from it and served up on this fine new EP. They are brand new orchestral versions written with collaborative arranger Ron Moose, who is known for his work with Sufjan Stevens, The National, Bon Iver and Vampire Weekend. The tracks have a luscious air, with Bridgers' vocals boring over serene strings, sweeping arrangements and grandiose keys. They serve as both great new material for fans, and gateway tackle for those new to her sound.

You always feel like you've pushed through the other side of the mirror when it comes to CAN. A mysterious, groove-laden, funk-infused yet utterly lucid place where guitar hooks seem to come out of the walls, rhythmic hypnosis draws listeners ever-deeper into a place that, while perhaps not entirely theirs, is one which they helped build in the outer limits of late-1960s surrealist rock.

Laying the foundations for early progressive and krautrock with an avant-garde approach to songwriting, by the time this Stuttgart gig took place they had almost a decade of work to go at, and yet as the tracklist suggests the band always had improvisation at their core in a live setting. Concerts that would transport crowds far beyond the venue, into thick layers of melody, hooks and strange effects, every single recording of every show is a genuine moment in history never to be repeated again.

Talk about expert branding. The 21st Century is likely to be remembered (if we make it out the other side) as the immersive revolution, with everything from restaurants to retail looking to offer us experiences. On her latest, Annie Clark - better known as St Vincent - has hit the motherlode in terms of realising this in an album. Daddy's Home is both an overt reference to her own father's release from prison after time served for stock manipulation, and a decadent, glassy-eyed trip into all things 1970s.

Critics have already pointed to stylistic similarities with a plethora of musical names from that era, a list that reflects how broad the LP's palette is. References range from Pink Floyd to Randy Newman, but let's not get bogged down in this part. Daddy's Home is a vivid work of highly original art comprising, among other things, pop opera, funk, progressive rock, surreal soul and more. Triumphant, then.

Paul Weller really does seem capable of evading the exhaustion many of his peers eventually succumb to, artistically at least. He's a mod at heart, a flyer of the Brit flag, and a guy whose middle name should be something like 'Cool', or perhaps a slightly less lazy cliche. Even now, 50 years on from when many of us first fell in love with him, this is unarguably true, and on Fat Pop he again proves just how many ideas are buzzing around this silver fox's head.

Remarkably, album #16 is up there with his farthest reaching efforts. Stylistically, he paints with broad brush strokes to create an album unmistakably Weller. From the motoring rock of 'Cosmic Fringes' to slow grooves of 'Fat Pop' itself, and the epic romance of 'Glad Times' and 'Cobweb/Connections', we can't think of anyone else who could possibly have made this record.

Review: Delta Kream is the 10th studio album from now well established Ohio rock outfit The Black Keys. It is one that distinctly looks back to their pre-formation roots as the group play eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers. The songs were recorded at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville with musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton - who played with bands who were involve with many of the original songs - also included in the sessions. Songs by R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others, are included to make this a lovely listen.

Review: Sad Lovers & Giants are a post-punk band from Watford, England who formed in 1980. The original lineup included vocalist Garce (Simon) Allard, guitarist Tristan Garel-Funk, bassist Cliff Silver, drummer Nigel Pollard and keyboardist/saxophonist David Wood. They released their first 3-song 7" EP "Cle" followed by the "Colourless Dream" single both in 1981 and "Lost In A Moment" 7" single in 1982. They released two studio albums, Epic Garden Music (1982) and Feeding the Flame (1983), before temporarily disbanding. In 2016, Dark Entries released Lost In A Sea Full of Sighs, a collection of the band's early work, but the record incorrectly included 1988 versions of the two songs from the "Lost In A Moment". For this repress, the tracklist has been corrected to include the original 1982 recordings of "Lost In A Moment" and "The Tightrope Touch".

Review: Andy Bell's debut solo single gets reworked twice here by Pye Corner Audio, with the originals also included. First up is a version of 'The Commune' that's slow and heady. Sludgy drums and bass bring murk while distant keys add a little ray of light and hope somewhere in the distance. Plastic Bag (Pye Corner Audio remix) sounds like a lost cut made by The Stone Roses and Primal Scream back in the nineties. Its another one mired in lo-fi fuzz and fioth, which is only shown up even more when you hear the more airy originals.

Review: With his involvement in Super Furry Animals long passed, Gruff Rhys has been happily pushing himself forward as a solo artist. While this is not a new development - he released a number of album-length solo projects during the time the band was active - new album Seeking New Gods shows that he's finally settling on a sound of his own. Full of jangling, soft-touch indie music blessed with interesting musical arrangements, expansive instrumental choices and strong, sing-along choruses, the nine songs that make up the set draw on a variety of inspirations (the Beatles circa 'Penny Lane', dream-pop, Stereolab, glam-rock, folk and much more) whilst still being blessed with their own trademark sound.

Review: British alternative indie band The Wedding Present's third studio was recorded in just 10 days in America. Steve Albini was the producer which means the music has a more raw and rough edge that the first two albums. It is often placed highly in all time top albums lists by noteworthy outlets like The Guardian and this double 12" package takes in the full original album as well as three EPs - 3 Songs, Dalliance, and Lovenest, and a John Peel BBC Radio 1 Session from 1991 that saw the band play versions of four different tracks from the album.

Review: While it would be fair to say that My Bloody Valentine's most celebrated works are by and large albums, their EPs - and particularly the four released between 1988 and '91 - are every bit as alluring and ground-breaking. For proof, check this fine collection, which not only gathers them together but also adds rare tracks and deep cuts that have long been fan favourites (see the full, 10-minute version of 'Glider', a cacophonous but strangely addictive psychedelic soundscape, and the baggy-but-ghostly 'Instrumental No. 2'). Over the course of the two discs, it's possible to chart the pioneering band's sonic development over a three-year period in which they went from visionary alt-rockers to a band that not only defied categorization, but also played by different rules to their contemporaries.

Review: Originally bestowed upon fans and newcomers alike in 2007, Riot! is Paramore's second album and represented a real evolution in sound for the band at the time. While never straying from the emo-punk-pop blueprint that first garnered them love and attention, this iteration saw the troupe explore more experimental and abstract ideas, while still giving us all plenty to pogo-on-about.

Hence the high chart ranking, in the US at least, and multiple gold records from sales in global territories. Music aside, it may or may not have been at this point when many ears began to realise that - even in the most angsty and immature moments - Paramore's lyrics are well and truly a cut above most of the rest. The combination being an irrepressible power that can't help but go straight for the emotional heartstrings, whether that means creating positive energy or inward reflection.

Explorations into Microtonal Tuning, Volume 2, which arrived only a few months before. It carries on with plenty of the same ideas and has been well received by fans and critics. The tunes are more compact than before but with plenty of weird flourishes, and the record is bookended by two hugely versions of the outfits new but unofficial theme song 'K.G.L.W' - one is prog-folk, one is doom-metal, both are great.

Review: Domino Records' My Bloody Valentine reissue series concludes with the legendary band's third (and most recent) studio album, a set that finally appeared almost two decades after they started working on it. M B V was critically acclaimed upon its 2013 release - arguably even more so than any of their previous work - and listening back eight years on it's easy to see why. The perfect distillation of the band's uniquely layered, otherworldly and dream-like trademark sound, it ripples with effects-laden guitar textures, shoegaze style haziness, woozy soundscapes and drows, glassy-eyed lead vocals. Basically, M B V is every bit as essential as their other albums - and that's saying something.

Review: Television's Live at The Waldorf was recorded on 29 June 1978 and was one of the dates on the band's last American tour. They reunited in 1992 to go again but the magic was never the same as the first time round, as this record goes some way to showing. The show was originally broadcast on radio and until 2003 it remained a popular and oft bootlegged recording. It is a bristling collection of tunes. The rawness and roughness round the edges makes each one even more real and visceral with Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, Fred Smith and Billy Ficca all in fine form.
