  2. Step Into A Break (Jim Sharp edit) (2:22)
  3. Something In The Way (Jim Sharp 10/9 Tribute Blend) (2:01)
Review: DRPN GEMS is a brand new label on the block and it is here to serve up crowd rockin' block party joints. This opening gambit is a real show stopper with Wally Puma and Jim Sharp mashing up myriad different R&B and hip hop sounds into popping new jams. Label boss Puma takes care of the A side with a hybrid blend and crafty remake of two old school anthems that are deep cut and groovy. On the reverse are a couple of super sharp DJ tools and body-popping breaks that cannot fail to move a club. This is a red hot debut 7" from what looks like a promising new label.

  1. Simon Says (feat Lady Luck, Redman, Method Man, Shabaam Sahdeeq & Busta Rhymes - remix) (6:18)
  2. Simon Says (instrumental) (2:57)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, the infamous 'remix' version of Pharoahe Monch's 1999 classic 'Simon Says', featuring verses from Method Man, Redman and Busta Rhymes amongst others, has only previously appeared on promo CDs and compilations. Here the track finally gets its vinyl debut, 22 years after it was recorded. It's a superb crew cut, with all involved making an impact on the mic over a stripped-back but heavy beat full of deep bass, spy-funk horn blasts and raw rock guitar riffs. This time round, it comes backed by the instrumental version of 'Simon Says', which is simplicity personified.

  2. Iron Warrior (instrumental) (3:41)
Review: Revival Season is better known as Brandon Bez Evans and here he lays down a super live hip hop joint. The tune was recorded in Atlanta with musician Jonah Swilley in fine form. The a-side 'Iron Warrior' has a 60s style psyched funk guitar lead with crisp wooden drum hits and a low-slung and languid bassline. The vocals are contemporary and muse on race and identity. This limited edition 7" includes on the flip side and instrumental that strips things away to the slick rhythms which remain compelling throughout.

  2. ODB - "Got Your Money" (feat Kelis) (4:01)
Review: American rapper Pras put out his mega-hit 'Ghetto Supastar' back in 1998. It featured the legendary rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard and seductive vocal of r&b singer Mia and was one of the year's biggest hits. The rumbling bassline, the filthiness of ODB and the sweetness of Mia just struck a perfect combo. It's pressed up here on a super little limited edition 7" that is backed with another similarly party-popping hip hop joint. This time ODB takes the lead on 'Got Your Money' while Kelis provides the countering vocal. The crisp boom bap and rough/smooth vocal duo still bangs now.

Review: Jorja Smith fans have been keen to hear from the contemporary r&b star since her 2019 debut album. Finally she returns with a fresh eight track offering that continues where that album left off. Be Right Back does develop the themes in different ways and ends up being a more broad and diverse collection of tracks that feature often paired back production. Some tunes are just her and a guitarist, others are late night slow jams with gentle beats. Her voice has matured since we last heard from Smith and seems to now have a bigger range and this record is all the better for it.

Review: Stimulator Jones hails from Roanoke, Virginia, a place of beautiful nature and lots of wildlife. That is capture din the music and the artwork of his new album, which is packed with home studio jams. Soul, disco, dub and R&B all infuse this collection of instrumental beat tracks. The artist himself says these are "pure, uncut, straight forward beats - no clever arrangements, no cerebral overindulgence, no cute stuff, no vocals." But that's not to say they are compelling. Some go deep and dirty, some are sweet as honey and others drift by like a lone cloud in a clear blue summer sky. Perfect for lazy afternoons and stoner sessions.

Review: DJ Cam (real name Laurent Daumail) may not get the plaudits he once did (during the 1990s, he was a key figure on the international trip-hop scene), but the music he's making right now is every bit as alluring as his more celebrated early works. Tropical Gypsy, his latest album, was composed and recorded in two sweltering, humid locations: Tulum, Mexico and Paros, Greece. As a result, it's a lazy, sun-soaked affair, with Daumail adding all manner of glassy-eyed instrumentation (sampled jazz horns, rap vocal snippets, tactile electric piano refrains, acoustic guitars etc.) and sublime samples to an expanded range of rhythms and grooves. Yes, there's plenty of head-nodding trip-hop beats, but also crunk rhythms, pitched-down dancehall drums, warming deep house grooves and slow-motion electrofunk percussion.

Review: Earlier in the year, Ilian Tape launched the Ilian Beat Tape series as vehicle for showcasing the work of a new generation of MPC-wielding beat-makers. The latest rising stars to contribute are Sleepy Rich, a Munich-based duo comprising Sleepy Boy and Packed Rich. Solaris is spacey and glassy-eyed in tone, with the pair combining intergalactic electronics and warming instrumental samples with raw analogue basslines, tons of crackling sound effects, and beats that variously draw influence from future R&B, broken beat, trip-hop, boogie, and the kaleidoscopic exploits of Hudson Mohawke. While cutting edge and undeniably on-point, the set is also hugely atmospheric and evocative, meaning it should appeal to fans of spacey downtempo music as well as experimental hip-hop heads.

The first tune out of the blocks is a brutal drum assault with crashing breaks and edgy rapped vocals from Darthreider on 'Subete Maboroshi.' Then comes a re-sung version of the classic hip hop anthem 'Said Knock You Out' with plenty of extra angst and bile. Flip it over and the angular drums and big stabs continue with Utamaru spitting hard bars over 'I Couldn't Become Robert De Niro.' Last of all comes 'I Need Love' featuring 'Seamonator & Darthereider in unrelenting fashion
