Review: Ottawa-based fusionists The Souljazz Orchestra have become something of a shining light for the simple pleasures of cross-cultural experimentation. Few bands - and they're a proper band, playing explosive live shows throughout the World - blend elements of '60s and '70s soul, Afrobeat, jazz and Latin quite so well. If you've yet to be converted to their impressive wares, this sixth full-length should be essential listening. From the jazz-goes-hip-hop groovery of "Black Orchid" (complete with snaking sax solos) and vibraphone-laden Latin hustle of "Agoya" to the fluid jazz hustle of "As The Crow Flies" and jaunty "One Life To Live", Inner Fire bristles with essential grooves and impeccable instrumentation.

Review: As you might have heard, Ms Neneh Cherry has returned with her first solo album in almost two decades and it's blessed with some high profile help. Now feeling at home on Smalltown Supersound, the Oslo-based label that issued The Cherry Thing, her collaborative album with The Thing back in 2012, Blank Project was recorded with the assistance of arch finger in pie merchant Four Tet and his buddies Rocketnumbernine. The ten track album also features a guest spot from Robyn, but this is really all about Cherry's voice, which can sound fragile and overwhelmingly powerful depending on the mood. Great to have you back Neneh.

Review: After several appearances on Bamalovesoul and various self-released EPs, Diggs Duke steps up to Brownswood with his debut album. Sitting somewhere between Gregory Porter, Amp Fiddler and Stevie Wonder, his unique fusion of soul and jazz is instantly captivating; warm, passionate and laced with rich harmonies and fantastic production, it's in a league of its own. Highlights include the sun-kissed guitar shimmers on "Born From You", the jaunty, heavyweight piano hook and sample science on "Mass Exodus" and the dreamier, beat-heavy "Something In My Soul". As beautiful as it is unique.

Review: The heat around Sampha has been building since his debut with SBTRKT in 2010. Now with the weight of the BBC behind him and his distinctive soul-stirring vocals, his profile is set to go supernovae. Following the success of "Dual" comes this special 7". Both tracks are structured around nothing but the piano and voice. Serenading with such charm and soul, Sampha makes you feel like you've know both tracks forever. With a richness and song writing dexterity that has potential to resonate with fans of both James Blake and Gregory Porter, Sampha's heat is totally justified.

Review: The long running DJ Kicks serious has always been fascinating, offering as it does the chance for DJs and producers known for a particular style to spread their wings musically. Jazz-minded German techno combo Brandt Bauer Frick grab that chance with both hands on their instalment, showcasing an atmospheric blend heavily influenced by nu-jazz and smoky, jazz-flecked deep house. This vinyl edition features ten unmixed cuts from the mix for the selectors out there along with a CD version. On the latter there are numerous pleasing diversions, from the head-nodding analogue boogie of Inkswel and Moog-laden African rhythms of William Onyeabor, to the dense drum workout of their own "Brommel" and the winding synths and ultra-deep production of Fantastic Man's "Late At Night". They also make room for a bit of tech-jazz (Galaxy 2 Galaxy), and the booming late night moves of Cosmin TRG.

Review: After an impressive last release on Not Not Fun, the concept-driven project Afterhours is back on the label with another selection of nourish beat downs laden with sonic signifiers that paint a cinematic picture in amongst driving beats and alluring melodics. The music itself lends itself to the dancefloor of any weary end-of-the-night-into-the-next-day party, with enough power to rattle the bones while woozy enough to slip comfortably into the unconscious mind. The production is impressive, from the gamelan tones of "Defragment #2" to the Mo Wax-infused funk of "Sixty-Four", touching on many different styles while creating a coherent complete release.

Review: Originally released digitally last October, Black is the debut EP from 21 year old Moko, a South London-based soul singer, here receiving a well-deserved vinyl release. Catching the attention of Chase & Status who promptly signed her to their MTA Records label, the singer is due for an album later in 2014, but until then, this fine EP offers a taste of what's to come. Although "Freeze" is a fine example of '90s-inspired broken beat and "Hand On Heart" offers some more hip hop flavour, the dubstep-inspired bassline of "Summon The Strength" and contemporary D&B textures of "Honey Cocaine" show she's an artist with a keen ear for contemporary sounds too. Really though, Moko's sublime vocals steal the show.

Review: A unique and ultimately special compendium, Sawtuha (which roughly translates to 'her voice') comprises a group of Egyptian, Libyan and Tunisian female vocalists who are exercising their right to freedom of speech over a series of tight contemporary beats. From the spit-fire angular hip-hop anger of "Neheb N3ch Hayati" to the woozy, Gonja Sufi style fuzzy funk swing of "Figurine", it's a unique fusion that loses nothing in translation. With production from the likes of Brenk, Blackjoy and Olof Dreijer from The Knife, this resonates with genuine soul and passion. Releases like this don't come round very often: essential.
