Barcelona Psychemagik
Barcelona Disco
Barcelona Electro
Review: The Situation crew have paid their dues with some of the better disco edits to surface in recent times - a particularly slick and slippery revision of a Quantic standard for Disco Deviance still gets rotation from those in the know. It's nice to see the slightly elusive Five Valley crew return to the art of the twelve inch with something a bit more substantial in form of a new label Situationism and some original material for the debut release. "Barcelona" is presented in three different danceable situations (geddit) with the disco version a particular highlight. The excellent Psychemagik are also called on to remix the track in their own inimitable somewhere between house and disco style.

Final Exit
Review: The Majesty's Pleasure label returns after an extended break with their fourth issue of disco-centric edits and it's clear the time out of the spotlight has left this mystery bunch of dusty fingered tweakers fully refreshed. Whilst previous volumes have dipped toes in funk filled and Philly string led waters, Majesty's Pleasure Vol 4 focuses fully on music from the post-disco /proto-house period of the 1980s and sounds very much like a Beautiful Swimmers DJ set condensed into just 12 inches of vinyl. The concerted diggers out there will be consulting their sample notes for the source material on each of these ("Space Palace" has the most obvious hook) whilst those who've simply been enjoying output from the intermittent EROS label will love both sides here.

Waze & Odyssey - "I Can't Hear You (Dance)"
Deadly Sins - "Don't You Know"
Fil Lavin - "You Are So Not Good For Me"
Sellouts - "Envy"
Review: The Sccucci Manucci label has done a fine job of handpicking artists on the rise for their releases to date, collaring the likes of Casino Times, Francis Inferno Orchestra and Toomydisco as well as the odd established name like Jacques Renault. The label's fourth release Forza Quattro is still grounded in the disco/house sensibility that has served them so well, though the presence of Waze & Oddysey demonstrates the Sccucci A & R team are willing to deviate. The elusive US pair are in the midst of a hot patch right now with releases already burning on Body Work and Southern Fried and plenty more due over the coming months, so their presence here is a real coup. "I Can't Hear You" sounds vaguely like a extra bouncy cover of the classic "RIP Groove" and definitely ranks alongside their output to date. Alongside this the white vinyl EP has tempo traversing contributions from Fil Lavin, Sellouts and Deadly Sins, with the latter's slow and chuggy "Don't You Know" a particular highlight.

Freak For Your Love (original mix)
Freak For Your Love (New Wave disco dub mix)
Freak For Your Love (ST house mix)
Freak For Your Love (ST house dub mix)
Review: Faze Action have never been comfortable with the nu disco tag, and in an age where it's dominated by digitally designed and somewhat pedestrian in its tempo the Lee brothers return with a dynamic live sound that sets them apart. "Freak for Your Love" is the lead track from their forthcoming album Information Overload and straddles a sick dubbed out punk funk groove that brings to mind the sort of incessantly sweat inducing music DFA was releasing in the label's first few years. A pleasant new direction for Faze Action is explored further on the accompanying "New Wave Disco Dub Mix" that delves further into the realm of echo and delay over that strident groove. The mysterious ST holds court on the flip with two rerubs that switch the emphasis up towards a throwback bumping 90s house flex without loosing the original's charm.

Nhan Solo - "Supervisor"
Huxley & Daniel Solar - "Dancing With Your Heart" (feat Miss Bee)
Balcazar & Sordo - "Stay With Me"
Satin Jackets - "One More Chance" (feat Natalie Conway)
Review: The Dikso imprint doffs their collective cap at the current amalgamation of disco and house with a quartet of floor burners on the seventh edition of the Super Sound series, making for a fine 10th release from the label! Mother Recordings boss Nhan Solo opens proceedings with "Supervisor", a finely crafted gem that starts off a bit disco (check that slap bass line son) before mutating into some kind of post Hot Creations house behemoth while you are busy trying to figure out what that vocal sample says. Alongside this Dikso head Daniel Solar teams up with rising talent Huxley and the impressively voiced Miss Bee for "Dancing With Your Heart" which has more than a touch of vintage Moloko about it - do check! On the flip Mexican duo Balcazar & Sordo bring the chunky disco/house vibes with the ever present soar of "Stay With Me" while Satin Jackets drops the most overt disco moment on "One More Chance" which is owned by the glistening vocals from Natalie Conway.

Stand On The Word (Patchworks remix) (5:56)
Stand On The Word (Panoptikum Arkestra remix) (6:54)
Stand On The Word (Walter Mecca remix) (4:08)
Review: Having already reissued the Joubert Singers disco classic "Stand On the Word" in its original form earlier this year, French label Favourite get busy with a remix-heavy accoutrement in twelve inch format. Those new to the art of collecting classic discotheque vinyl will no doubt be tempted by the appearance of the much vaunted Larry Levan mix, which turns out wasn't actually by the legendary DJ but instead the equally brilliant and much missed Walter Gibbons. Regardless, the remix is a classic in the disco canon, and is complemented by three all new renditions. Long term label associate Patchwork comes through with a nicely judged remix that realigns the groove to a slinky Philly disco swagger, while on the flip Austrian duo Panoptikum Arkestra go for a stripped back dubby beatdown angle. Local Parisian production talent Walter Mecca calls on the spirit of p-funk and Dilla for a nicely blunted hip-hop take to round out this 12" nicely.

Bits & Pieces - "Don't Stop The Music"
The Staple Singers - "Slippery People"
Eric's Friends - "Discocaine"
Brian Briggs - "AEO" (parts 1 & 2)
Review: Having released quality disco music since 2006, the Balerica imprint continues to dig deep to give its listeners more unearthed jams on Balearica 8. Bits & Pieces' "Don't Stop The music" opens with fat, synthesisers acting as the basis for this funk-laden freakout. "Slippery People" by The Staple Singers moves you with sharp pads, a shoulder-twitching beat and soulful vocal licks. Eric's Friends' "Discocaine" gives us a more traditional disco flavour, borrowing the lead line from Muddy Water's "Smoke on The Water" and laying it on top of a moving beat. Brian Briggs' "AEO" (parts 1 & 2) closes the record with an ocean-dipped jam, soaked in oriental flavour and served in an African wonderland. Highly recommended.

Primal Scream - "Uptown" (Weatherall mix)
AR Kane - "A Love From Outer Space"
Review: As an addendums go, this vinyl accompaniment to Andrew Weatherall's induction in the Ministry of Sound Masterpiece series is pretty luxurious. For those who've been doing a poor impression of an ostrich recently, Weatherall submitted a triple CD mix to the lesser spotted series overseen by the clubbing behemoth themed around his now legendary Easy London party A Love From Outer Space. This limited triple 12" edition twelve highlights from those three discs for those who like their dubbed-out disco, near-Balearic nu-disco, obscure slo-mo acid chuggers, wide-eyed psychedelic groovery, contemporary new wave curiosities, touchy-feely darkroom stompers and fluid, synth-heavy deep house on vinyl. Some contemporary classic Wevvers rerubs of The Horrors, Toddla T and Timothy J Fairplay sit alongside tracks by Walls, Kasper Bjorke and the A.R. Kane track that inspired the club night's name.
