Don't Wanna Cry No More (feat Gerri Granger) (3:40)
Sunglasses After Dark (part 1) (3:55)
Review: Acid Jazz has joined forces with Argentine producer Kevin Fingier to launch a label dedicated to his productions, all of which breathe new life into 1960s and '70s style funk, soul and boogaloo. This inaugural release is something of a peach. A-side "Don't Wanna Cry No More" sounds like a Mod scene anthem in waiting - a rasping, horn-heavy slab of soul/rhythm and blues fusion that sounds like it could have been made around 1966. Over on side B the Mod vibes grow even stronger via "Sunglasses After Dark (Part 1)", a Hammond-heavy instrumental wrapped in addictive bass, jazzy drums, fluid vibraphone solos and pert saxophone stabs.

Candi Staton - "Now You've Got The Upper Hand" (1:53)
Chappells - "You're Acting Kind Of Strange" (3:34)
Review: Candi Staton is due to tour again in 2020, so this choice reissue is a timely one indeed for fans old and new. It features "Now You've Got The Upper Hand", a record that often goes for over L2000 amongst northern soul fanatics. It first came out in 1969 and is a lush, upbeat gem that has been remastered for extra bang. Chappells' "You're Acting Kind Of Strange" is another rarity that fetches upwards of 300 qui. Here it comes as a no strings version from 1969 and is a real rollercoaster from the East Baltimore quintet.

Groovin' (4:04)
Groovin' (Silent Dream version) (4:03)
Review: The feels you get from looking at the artwork on this one - which it must be said bears more than a passing resemble to the series of pool paintings David Hockney did while living in LA - perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the music. It's laidback, stupidly warm and very much a place you want to be. The gently lilting disco-dub of "Groovin" is one for any outdoor session, while the Silent Dream version on the flilpside is a little more noodly and loved up. Either way, these are two choice cuts.

I Love You (3:02)
What's Going On (4:37)
Review: One of America's undisputed kings of soul and songwriting Master Weldon gets an AOTN celebration of the highest order as his 1976 classic "I Love You" (written with and featuring Don Blackman) gets a welcome revisit. An ultimately dreamy number, file it alongside Faze O's "Riding High" for the quintessential end-of-night smooch sound. If that's not quite enough, the B is a delicate-yet-rich instrumental cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" Stunning. There's really nothing not to like about this.

Review: Like many of the artists on the Daptone roster, the James Hunter Six sound like an echo of a bygone age. While the outfit hails from the UK, they genuinely sound like a black American vocal group from a time when rhythm and blues and doo-wop were mutating into soul. "Nick Of Time", their fourth full-length excursion, is every bit as sweet, soulful, joyous and unashamedly revivalist as any of its similarly impressive predecessors, with highlights including "Who's Fooling Who", "Missing In Action", the wonderfully bluesy and up-tempo "Ain't Goin' Up In One Of Those Things" and confirmed dancefloor workout "Can't Help Myself".

St Elmo's Fire (3:59)
St Elmo's Fire (instrumental) (3:38)
Review: As he does on the regular, Athens Of The North chief Euan Fryer has unearthed, licensed and reissued another obscure, impossible-to-find gem. Chuck Brimley's cover of Michael Frank classic "St Elmo's Fire" originally appeared on a tiny Milwaukee-based label in 1981, but pretty much sank without trace (according to Fryer, even local record-diggers didn't know of it's existence). It's something of a seductive, early AM radio gem - a deliciously warm, woozy and dewy-eyed mixture of AOR, soul, soft rock and the kind of glistening jazz-funk that would once accompany 'pages from Ceefax' on late night BBC TV. The track's jazzier elements - think trumpet and sax solos, twinkling electric piano riffs and so on -come to the fore on the accompanying flipside instrumental version.

Don't Turn Your Back (feat Rojai) (3:40)
You Do You (feat Howard Johnson - Potatohead People remix) (3:58)
Review: The Pendletons are keeping the sweet sound of West Coast boogie alive and well. Following their burning hot album drop "2 Steps Away" last year, they're back on Bastard Jazz with a crucial new single that further expands on their insanely funky sound. "Don't Turn Your Back" is a catchy anthem with Rojai on guest duties and so much slick instrumentation you'll find yourself poppin' from the moment the needle drops. On the flip, album track "You Do You" gets the remix treatment from Potatohead People, keeping the Pendletons' funk ethic front and centre but whipping up a sturdier rhythm section for the Howard Johnson-voiced track.

Review: In the past, Memphis has enjoyed plenty of props for its STAX-era soul music, but little attention has been given to the city's output during the "modern soul" era of the late '70s and early 1980s. To put the record straight, Light In The Attic has gathered together 20 mostly obscure and hard to find gems from the previously overlooked scene. There's more highlights than it's possible to list in this review, but our current favourites include the synth-fired squelchiness of Tom Sanders' "I'll Get To That", the kaleidoscopic P-funk of Captain Fantastic and Starr Fleet's "Keep It To Yourself", and J-Phakta's seductive slow jam "Is It Love". This edition also comes with a bonus 7" of Mark Anthony's private press rarity "I'm Just A Boogie Roller".

Sorry If I Hurt You (2:57)
Nothing Ever Changes (4:37)
Review: Kimberlite's latest release is not a reissue, but rather a fresh two-track missive from Aladean Kheroufi, an Algeria-born Canadian musician with a trademark sound all of his own. A-side "Sorry If I Hurt You" is a wonderfully warm and fuzzy affair - musically at least - with the artist singing of guilt, victimhood and failed relationships over a retro-futurist soul backing track rich in distorted guitar riffs, weighty bass, chiming melodies, semi-stomping beats and hazy electric piano. He heads into deeper, slower territory on flipside "Nothing Ever Changes", a delightfully melancholy affair in which his world-weary vocals and hazy horns gently rise above a relaxed but groovy backing track. Like the A-side, it boasts authentically old school soul production.

Review: 50 years in and still going strong, Tower Of Power are back with a new set that shows off their immense skill in the field of jazz funk. The talent spilling out of this collective is palpable at all times, but no more so than on this album's title track "Step Up", a high pressure groover where every player gets their moment in the spotlight. This special double vinyl edition is packed full of big hitters, from sizzling party tracks to passionate balladry. We'd recommend the fired up flex-out of "Look In My Eyes", where the tempo stays up and the groove remains urgent throughout.

Review: Many of the finest independent disco 45s that Athens of the North has reissued were licensed by crate digger David Haffner, so it's fitting that AOTN boss Euan Fryer has given him a compilation of his own. "Disco With A Feeling" contains some of those picks, alongside other obscure favourites from Haffner's sizable record collection. It's absolute fire from start to finish, with the little known private press and small-run cuts tending towards the more soulful and jazz-funk influenced end of the disco spectrum. Basically, it's a must-have for anyone who gravitates towards the rare end of the disco spectrum.
