  1. Rose Gold (2:58)
  2. Are You Ready? (3:21)
Review: Brand new seven-piece Miami/New York troupe Jason Joshua & The Beholders land on the freshly-bubbling Miami imprint Mango Hill with their debut 45". Showcasing their style across two sides, "Rose Gold" is a woozy, bluesy ballad with all the dreamy motifs you'd expect from such a heartfelt piece while "Are You Ready?" takes us up a notch or two into stomping northern territory with velvet falsettos and stark staccato horns. Apparently an album is en route soon, too...

  1. Home Is Where The Hatred Is (3:23)
  2. I've Never Found A Man (To Love Me Like You Do) (3:22)
Review: This tidy reissue gathers together tracks from two different Esther Phillips singles, both of which were originally released in 1971. Pride of place goes to the legendary soul singer's cover of Gil Scott-Heron's "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", which also opened her brilliant album "From A Whisper To A Scream". Sounding a little like the period "conscious soul" of Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, the track is brilliantly arranged and performed by Phillips and her assembled studio musicians. B-side "I've Never Found a Man (To Love Me Like You Do)" is an altogether sweeter affair, with Phillips and backing vocalists rising above a punchy, orchestrated soul groove.

  1. Thee Baby Cuffs, Cold Diamond & Mink - "My My My Baby" (4:46)
  2. Cold Diamond & Mink - "My My My Baby" (instrumental) (4:46)
Review: The latest hot-to-trot missive on Timmion subsidiary Stylart pairs the label's house band, Cold Diamond and Mink, with Thee Baby Cuffs, a three-part vocal harmony group from California whose only previous release was an ultra-limited seven-inch single last year. The group's classic-sounding vocals - reminiscent of famous male soul combos of the early 1960s - act as a focal point on the side A original version, though it's the studied retro brilliance of Cold Diamond and Mink's on point backing track that stands out. The band's authentic production - all rising horn lines, rich bass, loose-limbed drums and '60s style hard stereo separation - can be heard even more clearly on the fantastic flip-side instrumental take.

Review: Fresh from this year's Cordial collection comes this outstanding 12". The lead track is his most famous "Signs Of A Dying Love". Presented in all its full-length glory, listen to those powerful backing singers and hear why OG copies have gone for over 300 quid. Remix wise the previously unreleased "How I Feel For You" gets the rub from Ourra (big funk swing), DJ Spinna (thumping gospel boogie) and Sean P (full on vocal belter), each one a sign of a lovely release.

  1. Love With A Stranger (5:04)
  2. Dub With A Stranger (4:24)
Review: Rick Clarke's smooth 1985 cut "Love With a Stranger" has long been considered one of the unheralded British soul gems of the mid 1980s. Unlike many similar records from that period, it's aged impeccably well, sounding every bit as magical now as it did when it first appeared in stores way back in 1995. That's testament to John Collins' unheralded production, of course - all unfussy slo-mo drum machine beats, ear-catching synth bass and chiming '80s soul melodies - but also the endearing quality of Clarke's superb, reggae influenced lead vocal. Like the original 12", this timely reissue pairs the brilliant original version with the slightly more spaced-out and instrumental Dub.

Review: With a father who played piano on some of Terry Callier's greatest records, Ben Pirani has solid soul credentials. He's also previously served up a swathe of superb singles, both as a solo artist and as part of various short-lived Chicago soul groups. Given this history, his first solo album, "How Do I Talk To My Brother", is without doubt something of a gem. Pirani's dream pop-influenced blue-eyed soul vocals naturally take centre stage, rising above '60s -style backing tracks - complete with fuzzy period production - that variously doff a cap to Motown style stompers, Callier style folk-soul, impassioned slow jams (see the sweet "Art School Girl"), and the kind of sun-kissed songs that will have even the most miserable of listeners grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat.

Review: Regularly spotted passing hands for high triple figures, the Poindexter brothers' New York troupe's second D'ar Recording Company single finally enjoys a reissue. "Beautiful Philosophy" has a little northern soul stomp to it while still shimmering with 70s pop charm and some incredible harmonies while "Too Sweet To Be Lonely" takes The O'Jays' classic to emotional new highs with yet more fine tuned chorused vocals - too sweet to sleep on!

Review: Here's something rather tasty: a joint release between Expansions and Philadelphia International that brings together two hard-to-find tracks from Philly Soul group The Futures. On the A-side you'll find rare groove scene favourite "Ain't No Time Fa Nuthin", a typically sumptuous and musically rich affair that places the group's inspired soul vocals at the centre of a sugary-sweet Philadelphia Soul groove. B-side "Party Time Man" is a more traditional vocal soul stomper from the turn of the '70s, with sweeping strings and punchy horn lines tracking the group's sweet, sweet harmonies, which is great for getting the dancefloor going.

  1. Risin' To The Top (5:15)
  2. You're The Best (12" mix) (5:44)
Review: Third time around for Keni Burke's 1982 boogie-soul classic "Risin' To The Top", a track that remained such a favourite on the jazz-funk, rare groove and jazz-dance scenes that it was given the remix treatment in 1992. The slick and smooth cut is still capable of sending shivers down the spine, with Burke's impeccable lead vocal rising above rich electric pianos, a killer boogie bassline and the track's famous "give it all you've got" female backing vocals. This time round, the track comes backed by another stone cold classic and DJ favourite, the 1981 12" version of "You're The Best". More up-tempo and synth-heavy, it remains a favourite with both boogie DJs and jazz-funk fans.

  1. Senza Titolo Uno (3:58)
  2. Senza Titolo Due (3:52)
Review: Delights decided to sign these two tracks after man of mystery Nicola Spiromarino handed one of the label founders a cassette of homemade demos at a gig in Berlin. Listening to them 18 months on, it's easy to see why the Israeli label signed them up. The Kreuzeburg-based Italian musician is clearly a big fan of the more unusual end of the library music spectrum, with both the slightly up-tempo "Senza Titolo Uno" and wonderfully trippy "Senza Titolo Due" drawing influence from late '60s/early '70s psych-funk, the early electronic soundtracks of obscure Italian horror movies and the kind of uneasy listening music more usually found popping from movie theatre speakers during screenings of acid-era experimental films.

Review: Two never-before-released cuts from ill-fated Indianapolis troupe who looked set for the big time but moved to LA and consequently got shelved. 1978's loss is 2018's gain, however, as we're treated to two of their shelved gems right here. "Let Me Put It In Your Ear" is a belting falsetto soul slammer articulated with real urgency while "In My Life" is much more of a smouldering affair that builds up into an emphatic soul crescendo. Put it in your collection.

Review: Cordial Recordings continues to unearth previously unheard gems from the past and make them available to the public for the very first time. Soon, the London-based label will be releasing a previously unheard album from former Stax and Gamma act Sons of Slum, who were once said to be Chicago's finest live act of the 1970s. The seven-piece ensemble are in blistering form on "Music Is Message", a life-affirming anthem built around thrilling horn lines, great group vocals and the kind of driving, bass-heavy disco-funk groove that makes you want to throw some serious shapes. In contrast, "Show Me Tell Me" is an altogether more relaxed affair, with the group singing a song of love over a deeper and groovier backing track.

Review: Earlier this year A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad and renowned composer Adrian Younge's Midnight Hour project revealed the duo's musical depth and dexterity with the likes of Luther Vandross, Bilal and Cee Lo leading from the front. Now comes the instrumental album where the duo's compositions spring to life with a different energy and sense of imagination. You can really hear where their work scoring Luke Cage had an influence on moments such as the big strings and lilting guitars crashing dreamily on "So Amazing" and the subdued introspection of "Don't Keep Me Waiting". A stunning fusion of soul and jazz wrapped up with hazy downtempo sentimentality, this is just as essential as the original vocal version.
