Midland - "Safi" (5:47)
General Ludd - "Burning Mack" (6:18)
Auntie Flo - "Daabi" (5:26)
JD Twitch - "Maya" (4:58)
Review: JD Twitch's Autonomous Africa series is something of a rarity. Each annual 12" single, which features modern electronic music influenced by African rhythms, sounds and styles, is used to raise money for a different African charity. Proceeds from this third 12" in the series are destined for Tanzania's Mtandika Mission, a charity run by Midland's parents. It seems fitting, then, that he kicks things off with "Safi", a heavyweight slice of future voodoo that expertly blends analogue electronics and bombastic African rhythms. General Ludd go deep, psychedelic and off-kilter with their brilliant "Burning Mack", while Auntie Flo delivers a stripped-back vocal cut with echoes of his recent material on Permanent Vacation. Finally, Twitch steps up to deliver "Maya", which sounds like LFO's "LFO" re-made by African musicians.

Hundred Years
Review: It's been a while since we were last treated to a fresh release from Airhead, but now he's back with a four tracker for the 1800-Dinosaur imprint, which finds his wayward beat science spanning all kinds of moods and tempos. The lead track sports some house-orientated signifiers but there's still plenty of room for grubby bass and off-kilter percussion without sacrificing the groove. "Shirin" meanwhile flexes a grime attitude over some loose rolling drums with a hand played feel that offsets the plastic string stabs perfectly. "Shekure" has greater links to the earlier Airhead output, keeping things sparse and fractious while the tense atmosphere reins supreme, and then "Hundred Years" delivers another swerve loaded with powerful pads and tweaked out hip hop vocals.

Jam One
Formation 131
Review: Roughly two years after they first surfaced with Do The Same on Shifting Peaks, UK bass duo Mak & Pasteman add their names to the long list of artists that run their own label. The reception to releases in the ensuing period for Lobster Boy and Naked Naked have proved that this West Yorkshire pair have a willing audience for such a move and it will be interesting to see if Materials is used solely as a platform for their own work or whether they'll use it to nurture new talent too. Naturally they helm the debut release which brandishes an upfront bass-tech-house hybrid on the A Side in "Jam One", whilst "Formation 131" sees M&P doff their hats to the sound of darkside jungle.

Solitary Confinement
Distance
Review: Announced earlier this year, the bizarrely named Phenix series saw Paul Rose put his Twitter baiting antics to one side and deliver his first tangible productions in over a year. Those that checked the first of three planned Phenix offerings will know Rose is using the series as a platform to step away from the maximalist euphoria of his last album in favour of a moodier approach and it's very much evident here too. Fans of subtle mix openers will gravitate towards the subaqueous, echo laden "Aphids" which has the merest of 4/4 pulses to it, whilst "Choke" and "Solitary Confinement" are both geared for mid set deployment with the latter expertly opening into acid-drenched techno territory. Closing track "Distance" is perhaps the production most removed from Personality-era Scuba, descending into rhythmically minimal deep techno.

Feel It Out
Raptor
Raptor (Will Berridge remix)
Review: In addition to his work as one half of Mista Men, London via Doncaster producer Ryan Aitchison has been making solo moves under his Mella Dee guise these past few years with appearances in all the right places (think Wolf Music, Shabby Doll and Sccucci Manucci). In fact Mella Dee's featured on two of the latter label's releases so it's little surprise to find the producer popping up on the affiliated Manucci's Mistress operation. The Feel It Out EP sits snugly between house, techno and bass music with the lead cut featuring a rather vicious sub bass line and some superb vocal edits, whilst "Raptor" opts for a moodier UKG meets snapping techno flex. Do check the smudged out bass refix from Will Berridge too.

C'mon Lets Slow Dance
Review: After the absolute devastation of Nancy's Pantry it's all eyes on Tessela to see how he follows up that particular monster of a release on R&S. The chances are if you've been on a dancefloor commanded by one of the edgier bass-orientated spinners of late you will have heard "Rough 2" laying waste with its killer staggered snare hook, lurid synth line and bludgeoning bass thrusts. "Butchwax" takes a less pronounced approach with a jagged approach to sample triggering that calls to mind Art Of Noise, and then "C'mon Let's Slow Dance" weirds the whole EP out with some fringe electronics that try desperately to cling on to a beat.

Bleep Sequence
Tension: Mistry
Review: No Symbols boss Beneath kicks off his new Mistry imprint with a muscular two-tracker from like-minded producer Alex Coulton. "Bleep Sequence" sees Coulton pressing all the right buttons, with a detuned breakdown that provides one of his finest moments to date. The B-side presents the dubby and spatial "Tension", calling to mind the early works of Martyn and A Made Up Sound. An excellent start to what promises to be a label to keep tabs on.

Obsession (The Possession)
Obsession (The Possession) (Shed remix)
Review: First heard on his excellent B2B mix CD with Mumdance, Tectonic boss Pinch does the right thing and brings "The Obsession" to the 12" format, replete with Shed remix. A killer combination of 808 drums and muffled grime stabs, "The Obsession" is a nice taster for anyone who is yet to hear Pinch B2B Mumdance, straddling the crawl space between techno, dubstep and UK club hybrids with a confidence one associates with the Bristol mainstay. The aforementioned remix from Shed goes deep on a vocal staccato tip, throwing throws sounds of the original into a sonic field that grumbles and pops like slowly flowing molten lava. Essential.

Hold The Line
Review: Announced earlier this year and originally available solely through the label, SBTRKT's series of 12" Transitions are given a wider release here with all three records arriving at Juno HQ this week. Sourced from the same recordings that make up Aaron Jerome's second album behind the mask, these tracks are wholly instrumental whereas Wonder Where We Land, the newly announced second album, is heavy on the collaborations (Sampha, Caroline Polachek, Jessie Ware, A$AP Ferg, Warpaint, and Andrew Ashong all feature) Fans of early SBTRKT will love both "Gamelana" and "Hold The Line" which showcase Jerome's supple command of eye catching melody and intricate rhythm. Do check Transitions II and III if this tickles your pickle.

Review: Last year saw French label ClekClekBoom cement its burgeoning reputation with a compilation showcasing the local talent it had been championing since starting up in 2011, including such luminaries in wild-card bass music as French Fries and The Town. There has been a swarm of left-leaning club bangers issued out since the first volume of Paris Club Music, and so it doesn't feel rushed to be welcoming the second volume with a stack of choice cuts from the past twelve months. There's a strong unified vibe to ClekClekBoom, from the tight but slippery electro of Manare to the off-kilter techno of NSDOS, while 50Weapons staple Bambounou sounds right at home with his primal and utterly head-spinning "Idem".

Review: Launched late last year, the Something Happening Somewhere (or SoHaSo for the acronym fans out there) label from Trouw resident Nuno dos Santos delivers perhaps it's most high profile release yet with this four tracker from Presk. Pieter Willems output as Presk has generally dressed to impress (try saying that five times in a row) since he first emerged on Ten Thousand Yen back in 2011, and the current iteration of his bass heavy sound is wedged in the floor ready crawl space between house and techno. There is a notable confidence to his productions on Babou, which apparently "explore the specific relationships with linear structures". Those apprehensive of electronic music tied to concept need not worry however as Presk is on fine form here, especially "

Alex Banks - "Be The One" (feat Elizabeth Bernolz)
Onra - "Blast"
Henrik Schwarz - "We Are Bankrupt"
Brandt Bauer Frick - "Jungle Love" (feat Vic Mensa & Om'mas Keith)
Review: As the title suggests, this sampler is the second 12" shaped accompaniment to Modeselektion 3, perhaps the most diverse compilation yet from the Monkeytown stable. Indeed the four artists featured here are testament to that with Monkeytown newbie Alex Banks lining up with veteran German artist Henrik Schwarz, multi instrumentalist troupe Brandt Brauer Frick and the always excellent Onra. If you are unfamiliar with Banks work, this sampler is a great introduction with his opener "Be The One" a potent synth fest that is worthy of Moderat. The tempo switches up in fine style for Onra's slack jawed future boogie fest "Blast" whilst the flip sees Schwarz indulge his poppier tendencies with "We Are Bankrupt" and Brandt Brauer Frick team up with Vic Mensa & Om'mas Keith for the excellent "Jungle Love".

Messy
Review: There's a powerful buzz around Novelist as the rising grime MC from Lewisham matches his street level notoriety with high profile collaborations with the likes of Mumdance and Jamie XX, but on this solo EP for Oil Gang's eponymous imprint he's taking the chance to show off his production skills instead and giving the vocal chords a rest. There's slow and weighty gun-fire business on "Sniper", and spooky tones on "Christmas Riddim" that will be primed for the man himself and many more to spit over, while "Mee2 (remix)" and "Messy" bring enough playful energy to stand on their own.
