Bodywork
Electro Funk Massacre
Review: Last year's Lobster Boy 12" from Mak & Pasteman was a big statement of intent from the West Yorkshire pair, building on the promise shown with productions for Shifting Peaks, Senseless Records & Sounds of Sumo and proving to be one of the hottest sellers on Redlight's label. Aside from a remix of the 2004 Plastician classic "The Search", new produce from Mak & Pasteman has been thin on the ground so it's nice to see them back on Lobster Boy and on form too! Lead cut "Bodywork" is the sort of weighty house/bass music hybrid you can picture soundtracking the summer festival season on the Croatian coast, but "Electro Funk Massacre" will be the one many pull for!

Curious Paradox
Review: This 12" from Hotflush boss Paul Rose represents the first new Scuba material in over a year and is the first in a series of three records released under the curiously named Phenix banner. Described by Hotflush as "a bold new chapter in an already diverse career" the four tracks on this release find the Scuba sound moving away from the big room techno approach that defined his third album Personality. By his own admission the Phenix series is an attempt to find more space for mood and atmosphere in his productions, and that's clear from the subtle way opening track "Throb" unfolds. How Scuba chooses to let the series develop will be interesting to hear.

Livity (Ghost-202 remix)
Jam01 (Beneath remix)
Review: Should you ever find yourself in a conversation about remix projects with a cynical soul, any arguments that they are little more than shameless cash grabbing can be brushed aside with the stellar example set by the Livity Sound label. This year's ongoing series of remix 12"s has been superb so far, with Pangaea, MMM and A Made Up Sound all adding their distinct signature to tracks from the Livity Sound trio of Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu and opening the source material up in interesting and exciting new ways. The standards are more than maintained on this third 12" in the series with UK producer Beneath and the LIES pairing Ghost 202 (Morelli and Svengalisghost) reworking Kowton and Pev respectively. Beneath transforms Kowton's mechanical "Jam01? into something with a little more of organic rhythmic swing similar to his own productions, while Ghost-202 turn Pev's "Livity" into the kind of growling industrial monster of a track that you'd expect from Morelli and the ghost.

Two Thousand Six (Chaos In The CBD remix)

Cold Love (Seb Wildblood remix)
Review: London bass night and label Church return with their first offering of 2014 and the first original material from resident Apes. Putting into practice the methods learnt on a bunch of remixes for Church, "Two Thousand Six" finds Apes ploughing the kind of weighty, heavily swung techno that is so popular right now, and is complemented well by the warmth and subtlety brought to the table on Chaos In The CDB's subsequent remix. If the A Side is all about immediacy and power, then Apes B Side track "Cold Love" shows a calmer side to his production palette and is notable for some orgasmic male vocal sampling. Fellow Churchman Seb Wildblood ends proceedings with a doleful, melodically driven remix of "Cold Love".

Mogadishu Young Team - "Dead Wrong"
Robert S - "Unknownism"
Cyclonix - "1 ÷ 0"
Nant Rouge - "Derivative"
Review: End Of Level Boss is a joint project from Cyclonix and Tusk Wax celebrating the world of video game tech-nostalgia through electronic music. The label follows up it's debut Ganondorf EP, with the Scorpion EP, named after the resurrected ninja from Mortal Kombat, who is the game's greatest anti-hero, with the battle cry "vengeance will be mine". The Scorpion EP features tracks by Si Murray (of Deep Space Orchestra) under his Mogadishu Young Team persona, label boss Cyclonix, and producers Robert S and Nant Rouge.

Steven Jello
Kong
Review: Dirtybird's Trans Atlantic heavyweights Justin Martin and Eats Everything have been duking it out in the studio with ever more pleasing results since the pair first surfaced together on Hypercolour with Feather Fight early last year. Hello Mr Jello is their third joint release and finds Martin and his West Country counterpart in eminently funk laden form on lead track "Steven Jello". Quite who Mr Jello is has not been disclosed - indeed it appears Dirtybird themselves are none the wiser on the matter - but he's clearly inspired Eats Everything and Justin Martin to experiment with a more cosmic palette. The accompanying B Side track "Kong" is more traditional Dirtybird fare and is as monstrous as the cinematic simian that inspired the name.

Huff & Puff Bruk
Mo
Review: Making a welcome return to Swamp 81 after the Mean Streets pair of releases, Falty DL is on superlative form as ever with a pair of direct cuts that play on different sides of his production personality. "Huff & Puff Bruk" takes the fundamentals of 2-step and infuses it with lazy jazz and ethereal tones for a crisply funking, whimsical cut that should get all soulful spinners in a lather. On the flip things get edgier as "Mo" takes sharply looped vocal samples and works them around clattering slices of breaks to whip up the kind of frenzy that Tessela and co. inspire with their own rum choppery.

The Miracle (part 1)
The Miracle (part 2)
Review: Oh hello, some fresh Djrum material from Felix Manuel on 2nd Drop here and it's the first of two separate 12"s from the producer released this week. Essentially Manuel's first original music since last year's debut album Seven Lies, 2nd Drop are presenting The Miracle and Ode collectively as a third Djrum "suite" for the label following the previously issued Mountains and Watermark 12"s. The Miracle reminds you just how ambitious Manuel can be as a producer with the fifteen minute track spreading it's wings across both sides of the vinyl and moving gracefully between DJ Krush style hip hop and intricate drum and bass programming.

Forth
The Look
Forth (Arka remix)
The Look (Ansome remix)
Review: With heavy support from the Swamp 81 and Rinse crews, Irish duo Effy step up to Disco's Dead with two deep, heavily textured slabs of tech bass soul. "Forth" slams with a set of massive drums that forge a stark, almost tribal path while deep subs gurgle and groan beneath. "The Look" struts with a tiny bit more drum subtlety while vocal snippets and minor key synth shots lead the narrative. Remix-wise Arka twists the rhythmic emphasis on "Forth" while Ansome flips "The Look" into a distorted chaos-fest. Dangerous stuff.

Melba's Call (Deleted mix)
Melba's Call (Deleted instrumental)
Review: Night Slugs offer up a prelude of sorts to Your Charizmatic Self, the first full release from label founder Bok Bok in a hot damn minute with the deleted mix of his Kelela hookup "Melba's Call". As the name suggests, it's considerably rougher around the edges than the original version, with an audible hiss that suggests the hardware has been recorded straight to tape. It offers a gravelly take on the Night Slugs sound, where rumbling bassline creates an undercurrent of John Carpenter horror, and its twitchy pattern and pristine Kelela vocal the only thing to stop you from mistaking it for a chopped and screwed version. Even in this oddly decayed form, "Melba's Call" shows just how far ahead of the pack Night Slugs are, and continue to be. Don't sleep!

Ode
Tailing
Review: This two track 12" is the second and final part of Djrum's third suite for 2nd Drop and nicely complements the fifteen minute journey through luscious, sweeping cinematic arrangements that is The Miracle, showing off yet more of Felix Manuel's diverse production palette. Though grounded in hip hop, lead track "Ode" could easily be adopted by the footwork fraternity, given the demented beat that drives proceedings forth, yet it's slightly overshadowed by the B Side. Manuel's love for hardcore basslines and samples shines through on Tailing, which 2nd Drop describe quite aptly as a thumping techno beast.

Exit To The Comfort Zone
Review: Fresh from serving up their first artist album in the shape of Keplar by French Fries, Parisian club imprint ClekClekBoom return to the more familiar 12" format with some new Coni produce. Presumably called the Comfort Zone EP because Coni wishes to lift you out of it, the four tracks here show a further evolution in his raw brand of hybrid dance. Lead cut "The Opposite" demonstrates a nice interplay between the delicate synth pads and dusty, tumbling toms and makes for a simple yet very effective DJ tool. "Napalm" is apparently Coni's homage to Dance Mania which is quite self-evident when you hear the sound clip play, whilst B Side opener "Bunker's Groove" offers a hint at the producer's darker side, a chasm deep exercise in warehouse techno Paris style. "Exit to the Comfort Zone" offers a more introspective finale, though many will find it perfect as a mixtape opener!

Run
Is It Me (Walking mix)
Review: This cheeky little White Label from San Francisco-based producer Jim E Stack - he of Hyetal and Sky Ferreira fame - courtesy of the Innovative Leisure label that pulls together two tracks that have been causing some serious commotion on his Soundcloud page. Appearing on music hype barometer Pitchfork last year, "Is It Me" was described as sounding "like a car that just won't start" but really it's all about the subtle ways in which Jim E Stack twists the vocal harmony this way and that to form the most unlikely of club bangers. Complementing this, "Run" shows off the producer's deft drum editing and arranging skills as a barrage of samples are fed frenetically through the shredder.

Burning Memories
Switchblade
Trace Loops
Northern Shadows
Review: Although it only has three releases behind it, Pinch's Cold Recordings, started last year as an "an outlet for new movements in the ever evolving UK hardcore continuum" has already given us some essential forward-thinking bass music from Elmono, Ipman and Batu. The label's fourth release, comes from Acre, a producer who put out an EP of killer grime fusions on Visionist's Lost Codes label last year, and is perhaps Cold's best release to date. The Burning Memories EP features four tracks which see Acre delve ever deeper into his singularly murky sound; the title track combines grime and jungle with slow, brooding techno coming in somewhere between the sounds of Mumdance and Beneath, while "Switchblade" is dominated by a heavy bass blast and crackling electric leads. "Trace Loops" is the most experimental track of all, combining morse code bleeps with a ghostly rhythm that sounds like zombified dubstep, while "Northern Shadows" takes things into peak time territory with a barrage of kicks and subs that are designed to demolish the floor. Big, big record from Acre here.

Return
Des Niles
YHVH
Life Code
Review: UK producer Deadboy will always be synonymous with Jackmaster's Numbers label, having inaugurated it back in 2010 with the one sided If U Want Me 12" back in 2010. It's fair to say Numbers rise since then has been stratospheric and along the way they managed to coax more killer dancefloor material out of man like Deadboy on a roughly annual basis. The suitably titled Return offers a true display of Deadboy's production palette, with a title track that could feasibly suit a film soundtrack. "Des Niles" meanwhile is reminiscent of the 16bit club stylings of label mate Redinho and the B Side brandishes some classic Deadboy hybrid dancefloor slayers in the form of "YHVH" and "Life Code".

Unlearning
Review: Aussie producer Kloke steps up to the far-reaching Styles Upon Styles imprint with a collection of deep and distinctive flavours. His sermon begins with the washy, brushy textures of "Deep City" that chugs lazily with deep house muscle but ambient spirit. "Mayfield", meanwhile, ebbs and flows mournfully over a bed of sad organs. Further on we hit Burialesque muffled anthemia ("Ritual"), we get zoned out by the tripped chops and overlaps of "Room With A View", we step back to the early 80s with the dramatic synthesis of "Flood" and end on a subverted electro high with "Unlearning". Strange and complex yet charming and immersive, Kloke has created something genuinely unique here.

Loveless
Tungsten (feat Hodge)
Review: Marking the emergence of another fresh talent in the bustling Bristolian scene, Idle Hands present the bass-laden, icy talents of Facta to the world. "Loveless" carries the torch from the finest stripped-down dubstep standards and applies it to the slower tempos of today, with a cheeky line in square wave bass thrown in for good measure to make for a cool tempered, deceptively heavy cut. Local champ Hodge lends a hand on "Tungsten", which finds a more peppy set of drums ticking away over dynamic flourishes of bass and samples with some wonderfully haunting refrains woven in to break up the mechanismo.

No Excuse
Feel What
Night Tracking
Review: Back on LuckyMe for another round of R&B tinged beats from the next dimension, at this point Montreal's Jacques Greene is certainly a dab hand at matching forward-thinking production with accessible pop tropes. "No Excuse" centres on a heartfelt vocal hook, but all around it fall chunky found sound beats while winsome synths warble overhead. "Feel What" places its own vocal sample in a more distant reverb chamber, letting the snap of the broken beat drums take to the fore of the mix. "Night Tracking" is the more obviously club ready cut with its discernible house thrust, but even then the bewitching melodies spell out a more reflective purpose to this EP.

Trust Again (Rabit remix)
Trust Again (Inkke remix)
Trust Again (Compa remix)
Trust Again (Major Grave remix)
Review: With the long-awaited DJ Q album finally available, Local Action use the opportunity to sneak out this limited white label 12" featuring four exclusive reworks of the bassline don's "Trust Again" single. First up on the A-side is Texan grime producer Rabit, who overlays some punishing bass and fractured rhythms on top of a scrambled version of the original's pop melodies, and Glasgow-based Inkke, who offers a more dancefloor friendly grime-inspired re-rub which bodes very well for future Local Action Material from the producer later in the year. On the flip side, talented up and coming dubstep producer Compa provides a killer dubstep version which makes incredible use of the full vocal to create the kind of pop-dubstep track Magnetic Man wished they could have made, while Major Grave rounds things off with another killer grime flavoured version which combines a steppers rhythm with some seriously heavy bass. Although most remix EPs can be beset with duff moments, there isn't a single dud on here.
