Killer
Nasty
Review: A couple of months into 2014 and Kieran Hebden seems to be in the most productive phase of his long career thus far at the moment, swiftly following up the material that comprised 2012?s Pink compilation with the Beautiful Rewind album last year. Having first teased the notion of some tracks with veteran grime producer and Hyperdub regular Terror Danjah a few months back, they finally arrive in physical format in the shape of the two track 12" Killer/Nasty. Possibly the best Four Tet collaboration since that famed Moth/Wolf Cub 12? with Burial from 2009, both "Killer" and "Nasty" combine grime, jungle, funky and techno into a enjoyably twisted pair of club tracks.

Review: In terms of functional no-nonsense house music, few new labels last year enjoyed the widespread success that greeted the first three releases on the Australian label Untzz Twelve Inch. A fourth record and the first Untzz release of the year arrives and it provides a slight shift in focus away from the split nature of previous output in favour of granting two label mainstays the full platform to shine. Step forward Freddie Norwood and Dass whose Still Get On EP features four groove heavy collaborative productions, with the vacuum sealed boogie of B Side opener "1050" a personal favourite here at Juno HQ.

Review: A rather underrated cornerstone of the the UK's nebulous bass and techno scenes for more than half a decade, Untold ushers in a debut album in the shape of Black Light Spiral and boy does it pack a punch. If you caught any of the online previews that have surfaced in the period preceding it's release, you will have some idea of what to expect but the Hemlock boss has genuinely delivered one of this year's most impressive albums thus far. The foreboding sirens of opening track "5 Wheels" set the tone for an album that delivers on Untold's mission to keep the people up and at it with rough tough music while confounding them with brilliantly executed improbabilities.

Turbo Mitzi
Whiplash
Review: Increasingly joining forces to explore the icy wastes of bass-laden rave damage for darker-minded dancers, Pinch and Mumdance officially consecrate their aligned creative visions with this nasty single on Tectonic. "Turbo Mitzi" comes to life on a dread-filled string refrain that instantly sets the mood for the track, before giving way to a sparse combination of whip crack drum machine snaps and brain-drilling synth noises of a stunningly rendered glass-like quality. "Whiplash" is no less forgiving as a cavalcade of percussion flings itself about the room with malicious intent. Between the monstrous bass swells and stop-start dynamics there's going to be a whole lot of mean-tempered solitary shape-throwing occurring to this one over the coming months

Sly One - "Come To Mine" (HNNY remix)
De$ignated - "Valentine" (feat Kyiki - Applebottom remix)
Odessa - "Get Right" (Ossie remix)
Review: Authentic vibes abound as three of house music's brightest young contributors apply some seriously slick remix tricks. Taken from the label's third Nasty Rips compendium, each of these cut shuffles and shimmers with groove heritage. HNNY's remix of Sly One strips us back to an almost Balearic state thanks to trembling glocks, wide woozy pads and a dreamy vocal. Applebottom's rub of "Valentine" meanwhile, is a more floor-focussed peaktime cut as Kyiki's crisp, sensual vocal cuts clearly over a pumping beat and stark detuned synths. Finally Hyperdub-approved Ossie turns "Get Right" into a slamming ode to pure US garage. Not a nasty vibe in sight, these will rip up any dancefloor.

Dead Cell
Portal II (Girls Talks About Acid)
Review: Cast your mind back to the fun loving early days of the UK bass scene and South London Ordnance was an almost ubiquitous presence, with as many 12" appearances as interviews evading attempts to discuss his true identity. Having inaugurated his Aery Metals label last summer with a remix focused record that featured JD Twitch, Chris Carter and Nik Void of Factory Floor, the lad SLO appears to have taken a step back with this Dead Cell 12" his first release since then. The title track comes across like a half awake, drugged up Sunklo B-Side with a dash of rolling Drum & Bass textures thrown in for good measure, whilst "Portal II (Girls Talks About Acid)" naturally features (subtle) elements of acid and the spectral female voices plunged deep into a dub techno framework.

Review: The first artist album on the Parisian label ClekClekBoom fittingly comes from French Fries. After debuting on the 'French' electro label YounGunZ Entertainment (alongside Bambounou) in 2010, Valentino Canzani Mora has remained central to ClekClekBoom since he co-founded the label back in 2011. The Kepler LP comes after a string of bass-heavy tracks and bootlegs, but there's no denying this LP is the South American-born artist's piece de resistance. At 13 tracks long, the album explores hissing cosmic ambience, experimental drum tracks, industrial bass-techno, broken beat rhythms, and some dubbier excursions on a classical tip. Special mention going to the album's club-geared highlights "Bug Noticed" and "Change The Past". Highly recommended.

Review: Vellico is the new collaborative project Ross Tones - better known as Throwing Snow - and his brother Ali. Arriving on Tones' own Snowfall label, it's as richly textured as you'd expect, daubing the usual Tones palette of autumnal synth shades over four robust club tracks. "Pennines" combines Border Community style arpeggio twists with a chunky house beat and contemporary vocal sampling, while "133G" features a droning bassline and Four Tet-like bleeps together with galloping rhythms. "Beck's Brew" meanwhile combines junglist subs with a '90s house feel, while "The Peace Signal" is the opposite of its name, a dark piece of rumbling analogue techno which takes Tones' sound into gripping new places.

Tribalz
Review: Formally a long running Moscow club night that booked Kode9, Digital Mystikz, Loefah Pearson Sound, Untold, Bok Bok and more, Capital Bass expanded to incorporate a record label roughly a year ago and hasn't looked back since. Choosing to focus on local home grown talent, the fourth release from Capital Bass introduces the St Petersburg pairing Formally Unknown whose debut offering showcases their potential. The tough faced "Untitled" opens proceedings on a steadfastly bass-flecked techno tip - you could see Loefah dropping this mid set at a Swamp81 night - whilst "Tribalz" offers a demonstration of how well Formally Unknown can utilise space and features quite the weighty kick!

Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Emergent London duo, Mounter & Mifi open their Losing Suki account with a telling manifesto for their self styled 'Analog Rave Music' which previously saw a worthy outing the Save You Records imprint. Those partial to a bit of rude garage will delight in the heavy stepper "Temper" where jagged basslines and loose 2 step rhythms clash with jacked up beats and some decidedly strange vocal samples. "Fiercely Pretty" is indeed pretty fierce, and demonstrates Mounter & Mifi know how to craft a bassline that repeatedly jabs away at your gut, whilst "Feel Ha" is perhaps the rudest production here - all jump up drums tumbling over Reese style bass lines.

Review: Dave 'Nochexxx' Henson has long been a reliable source of electronic insanity. Last year's acclaimed cassette release on Tripel Records, Greatest Record, more than proved his immense talents, delivering a wildly imaginative fusion of off-kilter electronic funk, ghetto-inspired madness, booming 808 rhythms and warped electronica. This speedy follow-up - his first album for Ramp - offers more kaleidoscopic electro insanity. His influences - from DJ Funk, Legowelt and Egyptian Lover, to Ceefax, Aphex Twin and classic P-Funk - are clear to see, though the way he combines these inspirations with his own madcap ideas makes the resultant music thrillingly fresh and near impossible to pigeonhole. As a result, Thrusters is arguably one of the most unique and exciting albums you'll hear all year.

Review: Starting out as a producer for the Slew Dem crew, grime producer JT The Goon has since begun to gain attention from the likes of London's Boxed crew and Keysound's Blackdown with his unreleased instrumentals. The Twin Warriors EP on the Oil Gang label represents his first official release, and contains four instrumentals which bridge the gap between grime's old and new schools. The flutes of the title track recall fellow grime figure Slackk's recent forays into Eastern melodies, while "Ice Cube" is a veritable frenzy of square waves and explosive percussion and reloads. "Eski Moment" isn't quite the throwback you might expect from the title, containing a healthy amount of dramatic brass, while "Grime Light" provides the EP's standout anthem moment. Old grime, new grime, it doesn't matter - this is great.

Bass Clef - "Acid 8"
Photonz - "The Fire Sower"
Cauto - "Lu-fuki"
Nino - "Midnighters"
Review: Barcelona via Lisbon's Iberian label returns with its first record in well over two years, with the Tax Haven 3 EP, which sees a host of diverse figures contribute a track each. Given the fact that the label's primary focus - dubstep - has waned even further since its last record, it's perhaps unsurprising that the tracks featured take things in new directions. Punch Drunk's Bass Clef contributes "Acid 8", a sinister track displaying his trademark modular sound that could as easily be halfstep D&B as it could slow moving house, while "Photonz" deliver "The Fire Sower", a crazed piece of electro that sounds like Drexciya drunk at an illegal '90s UK rave. On the flip Cauto's "Lu-fuki" provides some sizzling Dam-Funk style synthwork and Nino's "Midnighters" goes retro synth dubstep. An impressively diverse package.
