Try (4:32)
Box (6:46)
Sweep (5:05)
Review: Fresh from his junglised Hoover1 investigations, Rene Pawlowitz returns to his Shed alias and makes his debut on Pinch's Tectonic with three ace flashbacks to an exciting time of fusion between dubstep and techno around the late 2000s. 'Try' sets the scene with those tumbling, smoky drums synonymous with the time. Set to the backdrop of a rising, psychedelic build and faraway vocal tones, it's a dubby side to Shed we're often teased with but never get to fully taste. It's backed by two more exemplary explorations; 'Box' is dub techno to the very core, all grumbling subs and industrial elements while 'Sweep' brings the four/fours into the mix for a big fat juggernaut finale. What an EP.

Oww (4:21)
Grainy (4:20)
Tribal Warrior (5:08)
3 X 2 (4:40)
Review: If polyrhythmic, hard-to-pigeonhole UK bass mutations are your thing, this new EP from Roska's occasional Bakongo project is a must-listen. Starting with the tribal rhythms and deep bass of 'Oww', the veteran producer offers up a succession of cuts that blend elements of UK funky, dub techno, and what was once called '140' with weighty sub-bass, tough drums, occasional chords and plenty of densely layered African and South American style percussion sounds. The emphasis throughout is on rhythm, rather than music, making all four cuts perfect for those DJs who love to pepper their sets and mixes with drum tracks and percussion jams.

The Startup (6:15)
The Ambush (6:30)
Review: Manchester party crew Off Beat press the button and launch into label mode with two crucial workouts from Holding Hands and Modern Ruin affiliate Breaka as their debut. Two sides, two vibes; 'Startup' starts the motor with Bassbin Twin style booty-bass / UK club style shaker that rattles in subtle, infectious waves. 'The Ambush' looks back a little further to more junglised influences with jazzier breaks and big emotive pads that scream early Moving Shadow and Good Looking. What a way to start up a new label...

Dominant (5:09)
I Won't Ask (4:45)
Review: Fresh in the wake of his 'Hold Dat' EP on Tectonic, Lamont makes his debut on Version with two hard-shell club twisters. 'Dominant' plays a trippy role in proceedings. Stripped right back to its bare 808 bones, its swathed in a weirdo frequency that groans in and out of the strange and precision-placed samples. Meanwhile on the flip 'I Won't Ask' maintains that unpredictable edge but with much more of a mechanical sense of menace. A soundtrack to bounce around with asteroids to. Don't ask, don't get.

Review: With roots in dubstep on labels such as Artikal and Subaltern, but a current sound that riffs on techno, electro and oblique sound design, Italian Piezo has honed a unique club sound in recent years, continuously pushing his sound and stretching his ideas into exciting new places. His debut album Perdu is no exception as he whisks us into his surreal percussive, harmonic world. It's a world where you're just as likely to be hypnotised by glistening tuned steel drums ('Blue Light Mama Magic') as you are pummelled into dancefloor submission by tightly woven conga breaks ('Castrol') or sent off into a deep dreamy harmonic slumber ('Xerotonin') It's a world that will still sound futuristic and of its own years into the future but fits 2020 and all is frustrating oddities perfectly. Go go Piezo.

Ritalin Jam (3:51)
Ritalin Jam (AFruit remix) (3:34)
Mountain (Wait Here) (5:12)
Mountain (Wait Here) (Bulu remix) (4:35)
Review: The title track from prolific producer TMSV's first EP for Bun The Grid, 'Ritalin Jam', is one of the most hard-to-describe cuts we've heard all year. Breathlessly energetic and prone to shapeshifting at seemingly random points during the track, it sees the Dutchman pepper a snappy, up-tempo beat with lo-fi electronic melodies, mind-bending acid lines and sub-bass so deep it should probably be measured in fathoms. AFruit's accompanying remix is, if anything, even more startling and forthright, with acid lines sharper than the average Sheffield steel knife blade. Over on the flip TMSV opts for some sludgy post-dubstep haziness via 'Mountain (Wait Here)', which Bulu in turn re-interprets as a skittish, experimental D&B mind-mangler.

Soreab - "Cave Walk" (3:51)
Mala Femmina aka DJ Tess - "Ruff" (5:29)
Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.
