Straight & Arrow (original)
Straight & Arrow (Four Tet remix)
Review: Avid record buyers should be more than familiar with "Straight & Arrow" a pleasant, bumping excursion through warbling vocal edits and soft brushed beats from Falty DL. Not only was it a highlight of his recently released Hardcourage LP, but Ninja Tune have already issued it in single format replete with a diverse clutch of remixes from Gold Panda, Four Tet and ballroom duo Mike Q and Divoli S'vere. This picture disc edition is clearly aimed at the fetishistic Drew Lustman completists out there, weighing in at a hefty 180g and brandishing some superlative graphics from the distinct visual agency La Boca. It also houses the seven minutes of dewy eyed, slowly percolating techno that was the remix from the irrepressible Four Tet on the flip.

The Click
Fallout
Review: Joining forces with Dark Sky for a pair of forthright bangers, Ben Westbeech's Breach project goes from strength to strength with its adventures into house jams with a rough, bruk flavour and oodles of sub-testing frequencies built for proper soundsystem battering. "The Click" keeps things lean and mean, letting a sizzling hat ring out while a solitary clap trucks away underneath. This track is all about subtle sound design and that head-crushing bass line, with no need for any distractions. "Fallout" on the flip is much livelier, laying down some slick vocal snippets and rounding out a more friendly sort of bass line for a safer dancefloor play.

Girl Unit - "Double Take" (part 2)
Morris - "White Hood"
Morris - "White Hood" (BB dub)
Review: After the excellent second Night Slugs All Stars compilation dropped last week on CD and digital formats, two of the most crucial cuts now appear on vinyl for this limited sampler. Girl Unit leads the way with "Double Take Part 2", a triumphant sequel to the track that featured on his all conquering Club Rez double EP from last year, which retains trace elements of the original but has been expanded with wonderfully vivid results. Flipside new Kansas City Night Slug correspondent Morri$ comes correct with "White Hood", a unique blend of accordions, skittering hi hats, snare rolls and a massive 808 undercarriage ,whilst label boss Bok Bok also adds his own stripped down dub take on the track. Essential Night Slugs vinyl as per.

How The Fly Saved The River
Kangs Odyssey
How The Fly Saved The River (Lorca remix)
Review: With the sublime summer hit "Hoop Dreams" still ringing in our ears, Blacksmif returns for his second outing on the BlahBlahBlah label. Opting not to tinker with the lush post-garage formula that made his debut such a winner, he presents a similarly urgent take on melodic bass music with "How The Fly Saved The River", as rolling yet distant UKF inspired snares tumble over a collage of fractured vocals and hazy stabs, while "Kangs Odyssey" takes a slightly more laid back approach with its jazzy arrangement that recalls a slightly more focused James Blake. Remix duties for the title track fall to Dummy Records and left_blank artist Lorca, who transform it into a piece of dubbed out yet melodic house music which should go down a storm on the dancefloor, making the insistent bass stand out even more against its spacious backdrop. Fans of Jacques Greene should check this!

Raw Code
Junked
Review: ** Raw Code Repress ** The first release of the year for Hessle Audio sees the long-awaited release of "Raw Code", a live favourite of the sets Peverelist and Kowton perform with fellow Bristolian Asusu as part of Livity Sound. It's been high on the request line for some time, having featured in acetate form on mixes dating as far back as the label showcase for Benji B's Radio 1 show from February of last year, securing it a place on Ben UFO's recent Fabriclive mix. The lead track sports the kind of instantly recognisable string bursts that have characterised Kowton's recent crop of grime influenced techno productions, together with a bouncy yet mechanical groove dominated by weighty sub bass. It comes backed with "Junked", a slower, decidedly more broken production reminiscent of the experimental rhythm tracks present on Pearson Sound's Clutch EP released last year. Essential.

The Boat
Keep Few Near
The Boat (Gerd re-work)
Keep Few Near (Ghost On Tape remix)
Review: Homeboys, Grown Folk make their debut appearance on the San Fran party turned label Icee Hot which comes backed with two painfully tasty remixes by Ghosts On Tape and Dutch house wizard, Gerd! "The Boat", as the title suggests, is one of those deep house cuts that sways back and forth with such utter grace, giving us a spectacularly warming bass line to sooth us through the dark ol' winter days. "Keep New Fear" is particularly interesting and it's vibrant, disjointed percussion arrangement lends the track an edgy and off-kilter vibe that just blends so well with that bumping electro growl stirring at its core. As per usual, Juno HQ favourite, Gerd injects his rather gnarly kicks and snares to morph the piece into a certified floor burner, whilst Ghosts On Tape take things just that little bit further, bringing in some monstrous, effect-filtered piano chords and a seriously nasty bit of drum work...ya need!

Winton
Perc
Nice Mullet
Landfill
Review: Following an intriguing turn from Laurel Halo side-project King Felix and the return of Regis and Surgeon's British Murder Boys, Mute sub-label Liberation Technologies returns with Caustic View, probably its strongest outing to date and the second record from Hessle Audio's Bandshell. Its name seems only too appropriate given the sonic quality of lead track "Winton" which sounds like Metasplice remixing Maurice Fulton's Syclops project - though the sonar-like tones of "Perc" show the Northener to be equally capable of more contemplative moments too. "Nice Mullet" actually manages to outdo Pangaea in the contemporary pirate radio jungle stakes, complete with grimy subs and drums caked in rust, while the slumped techno of closer "Landfill" is as claustrophobic as anything on his Hessle debut. Make no mistake, this is a stunning record.

Subway Gothic
Ladymarkers
Review: The New York City collective Archie Pelago Trio offered up one of last year's most unique twelve inches with their self titled release for hometown hub Mr Saturday Night, a three track drop filled with stark originality and blossoming ideas. Arriving on the UK label Well Rounded Individuals for their next release is a most welcome surprise and this two track Subway Gothic 12" from Hirshi, Kroba and Cosmo D is just as refreshing a listen. The title track is worth investigation alone, ambitiously presenting a six track production that shows no fear in abandoning it's pleasant concoction of melancholic piano chords and driving rhythmic elements mid way through for a breath taking assault on the senses formed from sonic shadows, jolts, scrapes and odd shapes. Their wilfully experimental nature continues unfettered on the pleasant off key tumble of "Ladymarkers" which evokes feelings of Arthur Russel at his finest!

Big Tings
How Long
Review: While Bristol's bass scene usually heralds the D&B and dubstep crews as the champions, there's a fine line of deeper, more experimental bass artists in the Wild West too. Forget Me Not are a great place to start... "Should Be Stronger" ignites with deep house panache and a Hercules & Love Affair style vocal before shuffle some hi-hats and a soaking wet sub make their way into the mix. "Big Tings" continues this garage flex with a Ramsey & Fen style four-to-the-floor workout, complete with a very authentic vocal sample. "How Long" brings us to a fittingly sophisticated conclusion thanks to swooning breakbeats and deep jazz pad work. Beautiful... You won't forget these dudes in a hurry.

The Way It Do
We Trapped
The Way It Do (Damu remix)
Review: Having already delivered some attention-grabbing techy UKF bombs on Deadplate and Rebirth, Bristol's Ryan Bronfield now finds himself on esteemed imprint Some Think Sounds. In keeping with the label's style, "The Way It Do" is housier: deep and sensual without being boring, and full of quirky, off kilter percussive elements and effects. "We Trapped" is deeper and weirder: sounding like the wheels could fall off this disco bus at anytime, and all the more fun because of it. Damu also remixes the title track in a dark techno fashion that wouldn't be out of place in a vintage DJ Hell set.

315
Review: Since his arrival in the early 90s Scottish producer Neil Landstrumm has proved enduringly difficult to pin down, gracing labels as diverse in approach as Tresor, Peacefrog and Planet Mu with his blend of sci fi indebted electronics, and crazed rhythms. This five track Montessa EP for the infrequent but quality Sneaker Social Club manages to cram all Landstrumm's deranged musical genius into just five tracks and feels like you are dialling through pirate radio. Lead track "Guzacid" is little more than one long glorious jerk on a 303, whilst the Vibert doing Drexciya of "Hl_Lm" offers a moment of relative serenity before the superb dread vibes of "Super Mousse (Is On The Loose)". The real heat is however on the flip with both "Mc Aidsy Aids" and "315" ripping huge holes in the hardcore continuum.

Alex Coulton - "Grande Swing"
Youandewan - "Faith (For Jacob)"
Review: Founded back in 2007, London imprint 2nd Drop has deftly steered its way through the post dubstep fracture across some twenty 12" releases. Arriving at their fifth & a half anniversary, the label offers up a thrilling snapshot of their enduring diversity on their maiden compilation Future Foundations which arrives across a series of three 12"s (as well as digitally) The excellent Alex Coulton and dedicated up-and-comer Youandewan line up either side of this first 12" with the former's "Grenade Swing" needing little more than some rugged drum machine manipulation and a slightly drunken melodic touch to warm to our affection. On the flip the Leeds based Youandewan offers a slightly more soft edged approach with the delay laden off grid charms of "Faith"

Djrum - "Blue On Blue (Voodoo)"
South London Ordnance - "Daphne"
Manni Dee & Deft - "This One Art Of The Possible"
Review: 2nd Drop mainstays Djrum and South London Ordnance feature on this final Future Foundations 12" from the label along with a contribution from Brighton duo Manni Dee and Deft. 2nd Drop is a label noted for their enduringly diverse approach in the UK bass spectrum and that's demonstrated aptly here. Djrum offers some insight into his forthcoming album for the label with the sparse and playful half step production "Voodoo" which feels like it's dipped in midnight oil. "Daphne" finds UK Bass poster boy South London Ordnance in good form, laying down a notably gaseous bass line over the crisp bed of springy percussion whilst "This One Art Of The Possible" demonstrates Manni Dee and Deft's talent for frenetic juke arrangements

You Only
Review: For a new-ish label, Lo Note UK have begun with some hot property on their humble roster: first we had Bristol's My Nu Leng and now its hotly tipped Londoner Boxwork. This eponymous release is one of his first 'proper' ones and he's not holding anything back! It's a calling card to display the breadth of his talents, which he does over four tracks. "Specifics" is like Orbital and X-Press 2's Lazy having a love-in, "Bartom" is tropical bass-meets-juke, "Leak" is deep n dark voodoo-bass and things wrap up with the jazzy shuffle-beats of "You Only". One to watch.

Goodies (remix)
Goodies (remix instrumental)
Review: Yes! US label Fade 2 Mind do the right thing and cull tracks from Kingdom's excellent VIP Edition CD for an all too necessary 12" release. For the uninitiated, VIP Edition was the debut collection of original productions, reconstructions, and exclusive unreleased dubs & remixes from the label boss and it banged hard. This 12" brandishes the thumping ballroom houser "Fukin Jaker" and the highly sought after bedroom rap joint "Appetite Edit" face up whilst the flip has Kingdom go hard on Ciara's "Goodies" with a full blown remix and accompanying instrumental. Whilst everyone and their brother has a "Goodies" remix on their soundcloud account, few can rework the track with the mastery of Mr Fade 2 Mind.

Reality Hostess (Paradroid Electronic Bear Hug remix)
Brother Rides The Jailhorse (Paradroid original mix)
Brother Rides The Jailhorse (Al Tourettes remix)
Review: It's been a long time coming, but the third platter from Bristol hub Schmorgasbord is here pairing long term West Country fixture Al Tourettes with German producer Paradroid for a clutch of back scratching productions. Face up it's a Tourettes original backed with a Paradroid remix and face down the roles are reversed and the results are pleasantly diverse. "Reality Hostess" leans with a drunken swagger, veering off to the left as weird analogue funk careens around your dome piece; somewhere deep within the machine hides a sensuous ghost. Paradroid straightens out proceedings with his remix as swift, crisp 808 snap away amidst the cacophony of reverberant stems, whilst his face down original "Brother Rides The Jailhorse" bumps with all manner of off centre delight. For his remix Tourettes replaces the playful house foundation of Paradroid's original in favour of woozy, stuttering broken electronics.

LV & Dan Bowskill - "Livin' Up"
Pedestrian - "Sliding Down Rainbows"
Last Magpie - "Without You"
Review: All three 12"s for the Future Foundations compilation from 2nd Drop come in the most vivid of patterned artwork and this second edition offers up a triplet of tracks whose sound perhaps even surpasses the colourful design. The LV and Dan Bowskill contribution "Livin Up" is immense, a wonderfully shuffling torch song that would, ahem, brighten anyone's mood whilst Pedestrian's "Sliding Down Rainbows" is as great as the superb title suggests. Switching between moments of sheer incandescence and the point of the crunchy drums imploding on themselves, the feeling that this could be an off cut from Bass Clef's wonderful Reeling Skullways LP is all the recommendation you need. Proceedings close with another slice of Burial indebted UK bass meets soft focus RnB from self professed musical tea leaf Last Magpie.

Locust Tree
Locust Dub
Review: Zhou's Punch Drunk debut back in 2011 was on of the darkest records to come out of Bristol since the demise of Skull Disco; although they've been active with various Young Echo related side projects since, this full return for the duo has been long awaited. Featuring tasty full sleeve designed by Tape Echo's Alex Digard, the single contains two takes on the same kind of classic West Country dub dread; "Locust Tree" takes terrifying atmospherics and powerful zombie halfstep rhythms that sounds like Shackleton's early material stripped of its flesh and left nothing but clattering bones, while "Locust Dub" takes much of the same backdrop and fills it in with more of a steppas rhythm and pulsing low end. The only criticism we can draw of this is that it makes you wish Zhou could produce more - essential.

Review: Mysterious newcomer Ferox steps up on Bristol Black Acre who previously brought us names like Dark Sky and Blue Daisy. We don't know much about the man, but Ferox is more than capable of making some nastiness emanate from his studio, such as the fuzzy, chugging and not quite hip-hop rhythms of "goD". Every track is as diverse as it is stupendous, like "Gargoyle", a seismic mash-up up of ominous vocal samples, rotating drum rolls and hefty doses of low frequency sound for you to ponder on, or the fast-paced, shuffly 808 jolts of "Critter", another certified neo-London monster for all you bass cats out there. "Beyond" also incorporates Ferox's individualistic sampling style but over some slower, more swaying two-step beats and bangs. This one is warmly recommended...

Review: Coming correct on the slowly forming Sonic Router Records, Hav Lyfe lurches into earshot with a singular take on downtempo musings sometimes anchored by beats, sometimes not. Where there are beats they tend to be overdriven and swung out of shape, but in many instances it's the curious mixture of melodies, sampled instruments and awkward drones that rule the day. With a gift for surreal collages of sound hemmed into ill-fitting grooves, there's an overflowing cup of creativity behind this long player which should mix nicely with the Brainfeeders of this world, while still shouting with a voice all its own.
