All The Way Thru (6:04)
All The Way Thru (Brassica remix) (7:31)
Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

Give It All (Locked Grove 2) (0:25)
Double Sunset (6:44)
Bleeps (Locked Grove 1) (0:32)
Review: Unknown To The Unknown's early '90s inspirations are well documented, with boss man DJ Haus frequently signing and releasing tracks that doff a cap to ghetto-house, acid, Belgian techno and early British hardcore. Despite this history, Gnork's "Space Beach" feels surprisingly fresh. Described, somewhat matter-or-factly, as "jungle techno", the title track does a brilliant job combining booming, skittish, energy-packed early jungle rhythms with the kind of spacey melodies and chords that you'd expect to find on vintage Detroit techno records. Flipside "Double Sunset" jettisons the Motor City inspirations in favour of a more straight up, bass-heavy early jungle flex, with rich dub bass enhancing the mood.

Blurr (5:56)
Blue (5:26)
Review: Bristol label Idle Hands maintain the high standards set by last year's array of releases with a killer 12" from Soundman Chronicles boss Parris. It's fair to say that Parris was not a predictable reach for Idle Hands, although label boss Chris Farrell explains that their connection reaches back to when Soundman Chronicles first started, and Parris came into the shop with copies of J. Robinson's The Maasai / Misread 12" to sell. Any regular visitors to the label's bricks and mortar location will have undoubtedly found Farrell pumping grime mixtapes with a passionate intent at some point, and on the Burr / Blue single Parris has ably nailed the crossover between alien bass transmissions and low-end tilted 4/4 in a sparse and captivating way.

Deepcore (5:43)
Diversity (5:27)
Take One (5:43)
Review: Dark designs from Utrecht's Locklead: "Deepcore" sits somewhere between Tim Wright's twisted bass garage of the late '90s and Mr G's rough-edged wonky techno. The result is a track that will work across all styles from techno to UKG. Speaking of UKG, "Diversity" is straight-up heady jacking garage with a steroid-soaked 2-step and a rhythmic hook that's so infectious you should warn your doctor before you make this purchase. Finally "Take One" pays homage to the Bleep era of electronica with just the right amount of detuned rave tones, a chiselled two-step and a walking bassline that's not dissimilar to Zinc's early zeroes UKG output. Immaculate.

Review: ** Belated vinyl edtition ** Kode 9 makes a much awaited return to his own Hyperdub stable with a new album, and that is exactly what we were wanting to hear from the one of the founding fathers of contemporary UK bass music. His explorative style is perfectly suited to the album format, and "Zero Point Energy" is the perfect opener to a stunning sequence of events - large folds of bass deconstruct over sci-fi sonics and sink into the pensive melodic flux of tunes like "Notel", and "Void". There is also plenty of beat-laden material here, so don't worry, and "Holo" even ventures into a bit of jump-up juke, but there's no point trying to dissect Kode 9's music; the album is all made up of hybrid tunes, and it's exactly the sort of music that pushes boundaries further and genres to their very edges. Quality, of course.

Oil On Ice (version 1) (4:00)
Oil On Ice (version 2) (3:59)
Oil On Ice (version 3) (4:02)
Review:  Joe Taylor aka JT The Goon is part of the neo-grime movement, and it was only a matter time before we'd hear his beats on the sublime Keysound imprint - home to the likes of Beneath, Kowton, Logos, Wen and many other bass experimenters. "Oil On Ice" sounds exactly like its title implies, a slow-paced bundle of drunken beats surrounded by delicate swarms of grimey synths. There's three extra versions of the tune, too: Version 1 ups the tempo and drops a juke beat over the same liquid synths, version 2 staggers between garage and two-step, while Version 3 is the closest thing to techno on here, albeit broken and swung-out.

Gulf Area (3:42)
UDG (2:17)
Aeroco (3:36)
LOSS (3:25)
Review: For their latest outing, Munich's Public Posession has looked close to home for inspiration. Gulf Area marks the 12" debut of young Munich producer Mechatok, AKA producer Timur Tokdemir, whose recently decamped to Berlin. As first efforts go, it's rather impressive, with the deep, spacey title track - all fizzing drum machine beats, stretched-out chords and chiming, moonlit melodies - immaculately setting the tone. He finishes side A with the lilting, harp-laden downtempo melancholia of "UDG", before subtly breaking up the beats on the bass-heavy, off-kilter deepness of "Aeroco". Finally, he subtly mines those post-dubstep influences further on EP closer "Loss", whose sweet musicality, heartfelt pianos and classical flourishes are little less than beguiling.

Lloyd SB - "X Out" (4:39)
Geeneus - "Old Skool 2" (Trends remix) (4:13)
Spokes - "Tragedy In The Jasmine Garden" (2:38)
Review: Their third birthday in tickling's distance, London grime institution Boxed catapult a new series of 12" releases featuring the work of their talented crew members and affiliates. Slackk & Dullah Beatz take us on a trippy walk through the woods where the toads croak bass, leaves crunch like tuned toms and branches snap like precision snares. Lloyd SB brings the breaks with stuttering edits and subtle amen splashes while Trends contemporises Geeneus's classic "Old Skool 2". Finally, we wrap up with the tear-jerking synthetic lullaby from Spokes. If you're not touched by "Tragedy In The Jasmine Garden" you are officially dead inside.

Dont Leave Ur Girl Round Me (4:10)
Tell A Trick (5:00)
Review: As debut releases go, this 12" from London label Void Space Records is quite the coup. If you were tuned into Swamp 81 mixes circa early 2011, you'll probably have found memories of the Riffs dubplate "Don't Leave Ur Girl Round Me" which lifted vocals liberally from "Badman", a track by US rapper Murs and splayed them over a rude production that fit perfectly into the hybrid styles developing at the time. This dub and the excellent "Tell A Trick" from the Bristol-based producer finally get their much-deserved airing on 12" and still sound perfectly poised to interrogate the dance now. A round of applause for Void Space!

Sovereign (Ps cut) (3:41)
Sovereign (Neana Westbound edit) (6:24)
Review: Neana, Deamonds, Dean Lyon and P Jam's beat fusion collective raise the bar with a brand new white label series. Business as usual: "Sovereign" is the sound of all our favourite UK bass genres being smelted down into one big wavy pool of stark futuristic soul. Highlights are the percussive twists on P's and the 80s warehouse synth toms on Naena's edit but the whole 12" is a work of beauty.

Future Perfect (4:34)
Fugitive (3:32)
Infinite Plane (4:40)
Infinite Plane (Chemist remix) (3:48)
Review: Silk Road Assassin Tom E Vercetti glides the astral plane once again with a debut on Coyote. Those familiar with his spatial sound will know what to expect: crystalline elements, slo-mo beats and just the right amount of filmic emotion. "Future Perfect" is the soundtrack to the 2060s as forecasted in the 1980s, "Fugitive" retains the starlit twinkles while adding thicker bass and sharper, grime-minded beats while "Infinite Plane" takes us down a more emotional route with its downpitched vocal textures and introspective minor chord arpeggios. For good measure Coyote mainstay Chemic steps up with a darker, trippier remix. Bona fide future business.

Review: Of the many fresh faces that have come to light on Pinch's Cold Recordings, Manchester-based artist Acre has represented one of the most diverse propositions with his spots on Lost Codes (and more recently Codes), but he also has managed to follow label mate Ipman in bridging the gap over to Pinch's original institutional imprint Tectonic. After the Icons EP back in 2014, Acre now steps up with an album which fully explores his unique take on UK bass traditions. There is a lot to take in at first glance, from experimental excursions such as "Spiral" through to winsome beat studies such as "Always Crashing", with plenty of room for moody attitude in a reflection of the ever mutating definition of British soundsystem music.
