Off
Only Human
Review: Roska releasing dark music is not a new phenomenon, but this belated return to Tectonic - his first solo material for Pinch's lauded label for three years - is particularly bleak and paranoid. Lead cut "Hyperion" is particularly dark, with dubstep style effects and cymbal hits riding a pulsating and sub-rattling, if stripped down, 120 BPM techno groove. In contrast, the moody but sprightly shuffler "Off" is positively cheery in comparison, with more of the UK funky influence Roska made his name with. The EP's two dominant approaches - funky and techno - come together on closer "Only Human", which fixes a surging, head-cracking electronic bassline to an expertly-programmed broken techno rhythm.

One Sound
Layer Lock
One Sound (Luke Vibert remix)
Layer Lock (Cristian Vogel remix)
Review: Following on from his barn-storming Double Divide LP, Second Storey kicks off 2015 with this EP that picks up the lurid sound-design freak fest of "One Sound" from the album and matches it with an unreleased cut and some delectable remixes. "Layer Lock" is a daring step on from the nagging acrobatics of the album, heading into the kind of rhythms that would get Autechre tapping their approval. Luke Vibert meanwhile brings his cheery attitude to "One Sound" with a rude, heavy-stepping bass buster loaded with his usual array of lairy samples. Cristian Vogel meanwhile takes "Layer Lock" into a tense, stripped down headspace populated with earthy percussion and interlocking patterns, rising to the psychedelic nature of the source material in a most intriguing way.

Recall
Wiretap
Review: After releases on Idle Hands, Livity, All Caps and Mistry, Mancunian producer Alex Coulton made a worthy, if rather belated debut on Tempa last month as part of the label's ongoing Allstars compilation series. A debut proper for Coulton now arrives in the shape of the two track 12" Recall which finds the producer channelling some typically dark side spirits. It's most apparent on the title track where phased vocals careen around the channels as a pummelling gaseous bassline pushes the skittering half step rhythm outwards. "Wiretap" is more redolent of the Livity Sound school of skeletal polyrhythmic bangers and is no less impressive.

The Callin'
Airtight
BBS Madness
Review: **REPRESS** Kicking off a self-motivated label as a vessel for his up-to-the-minute beats, Benton follows up releases for Box Clever and Black Box with this razor-sharp distillation of old skool rave touches and tight modern production. "The Callin" works around a tense break triggered at a teasing angle to keep the groove limber at all times, although unafraid to melt away into blissed out chords at the appropriate juncture. "Airtight" rides on a similar rhythmic roll, although the atmospherics spell this one out as an overall darker concern. "BBS Madness" lets a little techno bleed into the frame with an even more taut deployment of forthright drum hooks that cross neatly through a multitude of styles in what should make for a prime crossover cut.

FKA Twigs - "One Time"
Review: As the title suggests, this ten track LP from West London hub Young Turks pulls together highlights of the label's output in 2014 and presents it in rather dashing fashion. There's naturally much to admire, from the sparse and atmospheric outsider electronica of FKA Twigs' anthem-like "Two Weeks", and leftfield 4/4 dark-funk of SBTRKT's "New Dorp, New York" (featuring the distinctive vocals of Ezra Koening), to the delicate downtempo textures and dub-soaked rhythms of Jamie XX. Throw in a slice of immersive, left-of-centre bass music (Quirke's "Break A Mirrored Leg") and a dash of James Blake style fragility from Sampha ("Too Much"), and you've got a formidable package.

Review: With a repertoire that spans various guises and labels such as Civil, Hyperboloid and Error Broadcast, Russian leftfield bass connoisseur Pixelord ups the ante once again with this hefty eight track release from the Infinite Machine label. With a range that stretches from fuzzy, synth-snapping future disco ("DSL Dream Corp") to gritty, gutter-bound footwork ("Videobar") via deep space soulful breakbeats ("Tumblr Girl") no previous release has ever captured his versatility in quite this way. Genuinely something for everyone.

Buliding It Still (7")
Worlds We Both Know
Review: It's been a while since the last fresh outing of James Blake material, and he surfaces on his plenty active 1-800 Dinosaur imprint with some typically esoteric material that confirms he still exists in his own unique sound world. "200 Press" is a track that evolves with elegance, with an electro thread powering the track while around drift wild bass notes, displaced vocals and occasional chimes, and still it grows into a spellbinding crescendo infected with ghetto swagger. "200 Pressure" takes a more obscure and yet bombastic approach with strange punk inflections, lurid synth intervals and a lot of found sound disturbance. "Building It Still" by way of comparison lets a little of the more classical musicianship sneak in, leaving odd poem "Words That We Both Know" to round off the EP on an ambiguous but personal note.

Dead Ringer (feat Aquarius Heaven - Mosca remix)
Review: Long-time tech ambassador from Berlin by way of San Francisco, Alland follows up previous Bad Animal hits such as "Thirsty Eyes" and "Tragic Acid" with this demonstratively dark double-up. "Dead Ringer" is a straight up space techno jam peppered with heavily processed African vocals and shimmering, winking synth flourishes. "Good Hurt" draws us into a moodier mindset as moaning, mournful vocals yearn over soft kicks and dense synth washes. Complete with a bubbling basement remix from Mosca, Bad Animal have delivered in a major way.

Retrograde Loops (part 2)
Review: Manchester club night Project 13 expands operations in a most logical of fashions here with a new record label, wisely turning to one of their hotly tipped residents to inaugurate proceedings. You should know all about Acre's killer debut on Tectonic that just dropped and the Mancunian brings similar levels of heat and rhythmic imagination to the table on this Symbols EP. The title track is a perfect example of the exciting sounds coming from those wedged inbetween techno, bass, and dubstep, and could easily be mistaken for an unreleased Untold cut from '09. Complementing this, both "O" and "Retrograde Loops (part 2)" align more explicitly to techno, though the manner in which Acre's drums cascade chaotically around the channels are a pleasure to behold. Keep an eye on this one.

Exile (Taquwami remix)
Review: Fledgling UK label The Full Hundred continue their efforts to straddle the fine line between the zeitgeist and the outer reaches of pop music with this 12" from Boston producer JLZUZ MILLION. The alter ego of 20 year old Joseph Zucco, JLSUS MILLION has by and large become known for his behind the buttons work, adding some production weight to last year's Illusions Of record by Charlie XCX's as well as collaborating with Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard. Error is quite a watershed moment for Zucco then, and the three original cuts suggest JLSUS MILLION is comparable to a turbo charged Clams Casino. Comes with remixes from Magical Mistakes and Taquwami.
