Let Your Body Rule
Tempoary Transgression
Pleasure
Review: Seemingly emboldening with every subsequent release, Chicago Damns make the fourth release on his label count with three solid statements on ear-snagging and head-grabbing modern house music. "Let Your Body Rule" has a seriously rough disco loop quality to it, calling to mind the visceral approach of Soundhack without going overboard on repetition. Beyond standard disco edit techniques, this is rugged enough to make people freak out on a whole other level. "Temporary Transgression" plots a more sensitive path into lilting layers of licks with wistful dashes of horns that burrows deep into the psyche without reaching for hard-hitting beats. "Pleasure" flips the script once more with a low-slung groover full of slap bass and dubby chord echoes over a fractured bump of a beat.

Session Victim - "Random Blues"
Medlar - "Carry It"
Squarehead - "Be Withou"
Ishmael - "Au Juju"
Review: Big manoeuvres as usual from the Wolf Music crew on their 18th release! Session Victim must rank amongst the most high profile inductees into the Wolf Music series so it makes perfect sense for the German duo to open proceedings with the classic slab of European deepness that is "Random Blues". Worthy of a Raw Cuts release, Session Victim weave dusty drums, sweet vocal intonations and the warmest of basslines together with the resultant laid back track likely to be much played in Croatia over the summer evenings. Complementing this, "Carry It" from Wolf Music regular Medlar adopts a similar hazy house tone whilst the flip holds a pair of newcomers in Squarehead and Ishmael - the latter's cut is particularly special!

Review: ** Repress of the reIssue ** Ooh if there's ever a deep house history lesson wrapped up in a 12" then it's this reissued Stomp The Beat EP from Gherkin Jerks aka the master Larry Heard. The Gherkin Jerks project originally surfaced back in 1988 with this 12" on the Chicago based Gherkin Records label, released anonymously at the request of Heard himself who viewed the Gherkin Jerks material as a creative experiment. Later revealed as the work of Larry Heard, original copies of Stomp The Beat rack up a pretty penny on Discogs so it's good work all round that the producer's Alleviated Records label has teamed up with Clone to release a digitally enhanced version. From the mind bending stereo panning of opening track "Don't Dis The Beat" it's easy to see why the Gherkin Jerks material has been so widely praised - Jamal Moss is a big fan - whilst the general off-key melodics and tough 909 arrangements of what follows still sound futuristic some 15 years on.

Iron Curtis - "Daniel"
Moomin - "I Whisper A Prayer"
Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

Thunder (Malcolm Moore Tsunami Punani remix)
Review: The Thunder EP is the first release from Chicago Skyway, aka Sean Hernandez, since his collaboration with DCook on M>O>S Recordings in 2011. It is also Skyway's first release on Altered Moods Recordings, offering the Californian label three tracks, with an added remix. "Pink Donut" is a wall of ethereal noise, undulating in sound before breaking into a concussive mix of percussion. "Wet Flood" chimes with sharp triangle hits, as lo-fi chords wallow in the background, omitting an analogue vibe likened to much of L.I.E.S output. The EPs title track, with its warm piano keys and italo synths, harbours a muted aggression, while Altered Moods boss Malcolm Moore doesn't hesitate to rough things up with his Tsunami Punani remix of "Thunder", boosting the synths original presence by powering in more amplitude, adding some noise and a new harsh bassline.

Bohican Bossa
Review: Bringing a soft-focus Balearicism to deep house, Ben La Desh follows up on his inaugural release for Sleazy Beats Black Ops with a batch of simmering cuts that embrace the deep just as they pack in the detail. "In The Back" keeps the vibe light and airy, using bright samples and a crisp drum groove to drift into carefree abandon. "Escape Route" gets moodier with more dramatic pads, and plenty of tension worked into the disco loop hooks, ever-building towards an unknown end destination. "Bohican Bossa" taps, unsurprisingly, into a subtle Latino flavour just as it bubbles away on a bed of shakers, complete with muted trumpets for that irresistible piquant flavour.

Liquid Beats
Review: Whut!? DJ Qu, Peven Everett and Josh 'Blaze' Milan on a cut together? That's correct the latest Strength Music transmission pairs up label boss Qu with two of house music's most iconic names in Everett and Milan for the A Side two parter "The Way". On the opening version, Everett's fragile vocal, is the perfect foil for one of Qu's deeper spacious arrangements which is blessed by Milan's key playing skills, with the latter element even more prominent on 'part two'. Face down and it's DJ Qu in solo mode for the excellent "Liquid" which sees a mainframe of clipped percussion and gurgling analogue basslines lifted towards the stars by the most wondrous of Utopian synth patterns and gurgling analogue basslines. Do check the accompanying heads down, bugged out "Liquid Beats" version too. Big release from NYC!

Strange Creatures
Review: Shout outs to Larry Heard for finally relenting to the numerous requests to reissue his highly prized Gherkin Jerks material through his own Alleviated label with some digitally enhancement help from the guys at Clone. The 1990 EP was the last of the two EPs that Heard anonymously released under the Gherkin Jerks name back in the late 80s as a creative experiment. Notably less unhinged than Stomp The Beat, the six percussively taut tracks here feel like Heard was reacting to the nascent strains of techno emanating from Detroit. Opener "Meltdown" for example is a rolling slab of pitched-down techno with sharp Motor City-esque synth stabs and nagging, incessant keys, whilst the interplanetary connotations are clear as crystal on tracks such as the beautifully chiming "Red Planet" and the pressurised funk of "Saturn V".

Review: The Year Of Naples continues apace here as the celebrated Brooklynite Anthony Naples opens proceedings on his newly formed Proibito label with a sublime 12" from Royal Crown Of Sweden. More commonly known as Huerco S, those who've enjoyed the Kansas based producers murked out house deviations for Opal Tapes, Future Times and Wicked Bass will be pleasantly surprised that Royal Crown Of Sweden is relatively straight forward experiments with a drum machine and 4 bar samples. The R.E.G.A.L.I.E.R. EP takes its cue from an old Pau Johnson record and the three original cuts veer lopsided through dusty DJ tools . For added interest, lead track "Vanern" has been rewired on the go by L.I.E.S. duo Steve Summers and Bookworms with some assistance from their friend Lori - the results will please anyone whose been digging their Confused House output.

Precious Things (original mix)
Precious Things (Alida remix)
Review: Deymare's third outing this year comes via Deso Records. Entitled Nightlights, the EP ventures through various druthers of house music, with two originals and two remixes. "Nightlights" is minimal in construction, held together by a thick Chicagoan bassline, sparsely struck keys, thocking rim shots and airy pads. The Desos remix swaps the original's bassline for something more filtered and undulating, adding drum machine hi-hats, sustained rhodes and high pitched strings. The upbeat chimes, cabasa shakes and spacey disco bubbles in "Precious Things" shares hints of a Daniel Wang inspiration, while the Alida remix adds a vocal and uses the originals piano chords as its centrepiece.

Review: Originally released on Ron Trent's Future Vision, Trinidadian Deep's "Tree Of Life" finds itself reissued on the fledgling Plastik People Recordings, and its smooth blend of tropical percussion, laid back Motor City chords and soulful vocals still stands up today, even when put next to the brand new "Deep Thoughts", a less vocal number but one that succeeds in creating those deceptively complex moods and shimmering synth modulations Trinidadian Deep is so eminently capable of. On the flip, Life Recorder remixes "Tree Of Life", accentuating the original's dubbier qualities and upping the motorik drums, while Bradford James' rework of "Deep Thoughts" offers the most radical revision, providing a raw, late night version with all the vibrant house energy of the original.

Review: Standing cannily for Second Hand Audio Gold, the SHAG Edits Vol 1 12" is the third release from Jamie Trench's blossoming Roots For Gold imprint and features plenty of that jacking house vibe from the man himself and some close friends. Trench sets the tone with "Velvet Curtains" which pairs crisp, forthright jacking rhythms with a procession of vocal samples, whilst close friend and fellow DJ partner Daniel Dalton opts for a more funk laden approach with "The Party People". Lifting Weights
Mujeres Nerviosas
Review: This Lifting Weights 12" is foremost notable for being the first time in a long time that Pepe Bradock has released original material on a label other than his own Atavisme. Furthermore it represents the latest excellent Acid Test release from Los Angeles label Absurb Recordings, following previous contributions from Tin Man, Donato Dozzy, Holger Zilske and the Achterbahn D'Amour pairing of Edit Piafra and Iron Curtin. Both "Lifting Weights" and "Mujeres Nerviosas" were produced and programmed in LA, but subsequently "assembled" in Bradock's hometown of Paris and bring the kooky production eccentricities of the adored Frenchman to the fore. The latter track is particularly notable for the constant shift in structure and arrangement.

Review: Banfield Audio's fledgling Monochromatic label return following a sterling debut emission from Specter and the label bosses themselves, turning to another under rated US producer in the shape of Amir Alexander. Despite his heritage, Alexander is only now really getting the wider exposure his explosive production capacity deserves and the Chicagoan's contribution here is an incendiary example of just what he's capable of. "Scuzzelbutt!" is Chicago acid house in a similar frame of mind to Larry Heard's prized Gherkin Jerks output, though the TR-led rhythms are precision tooled and crisp to a tee. Banfield Audio maintain their 100% appearance record with a slightly more sedate B Side saunter through classic Detroit deep house that accrues all manner of melodic charm as it progresses.

The Sleepwalker
Review: Currently two of the busiest men in contemporary deep house, Alex Agore and James Johnston have still found the time to establish their joint No Matter What Recordings as a potent outlet. This sixth release sees Johnston at the buttons for sole control after a couple of split releases and the Consumer EP demonstrates a further refinement of his own distinct brand of house music. Arriving on transparent vinyl, lead track "Give Him Prozac" sets the tone with a thick four note synth lead that accrues all manner of dreamlike analogue qualities as it progresses backed by those crisp rolling rhythms Johnston is known for. "Columbo Likes The Nightlife" takes things on a notably deeper path, all dubby chords and intricate skipping percussive touches augmented by epic sweeping textures, whilst face down "And They Had Cocktails" maintains the same feel if upping the pace somewhat. Johnston ends strongly with the sublime analogue build of "The Sleepwalker".

Luv Thang (feat Jessy Allen)
Girls Can't Swim
Luv Thang (instrumental)
Review: Two mainstays of the Dutch electro-techno scene join forces here and somewhat predictably the results are chunky. The title track is a no-holds-barred beast, riding on a rollicking rhythm of swung drums while being anchored by a monstrous bassline that makes for a neat juncture between vintage electro and Chicago house, with some hooky vocals from Jessy Allen thrown in for good measure. "Girls Can't Swim" is a trackier affair, working a similar jerking groove with slithers of synthesised interference flitting around the rock solid drums. With an instrumental cut of "Luv Thang" chucked in for good measure, it's hard to find fault with this latest emission from Gerd's 4 Lux imprint.

Review: Kai Alce's first release of 2013 - only his second in two years - comes via his own NDATL imprint. Naturally the EP draws inspirations from the cities the label is named after: New York-Detroit-Atlanta. With tinges of dub, the A-side is reminiscent to the looping deep house of Norm Talley's music on Pariter, while the scrappy hats, popping snares and all-round rough fidelity of "Rabbit's Hole" rank up with the productions of Delroy Edwards on New York label L.I.E.S. Alce then brings some of his own home spun Atlanta funk to the EP with the title track "World Causes".

Amnios (Worthy Is Deep remix)
Review: The Sound Oasis 12" sees Italian producer and DJ Joe Drive adds Aesthetic Audio to an already impressive discography that includes turn outs for Ethereal Sounds, Mathematics and Lux Rec; it's perhaps Drive's most high profile release to date too, as he shares plate space with label boss Keith Worthy. If you've checked Drive's previous releases for the aforementioned labels you'll know he operates in the deeper end of the house spectrum and thus is a nice fit for Aesthetic Audio. Rawness and deepness are applied in equal measures on Joe Drive's lead track "That's How I Feel" which begins like an instrumental version of Lil Louis' "Blackout" before veering in a more luscious direction characterised by abstract melodic textures and loose tumbling drums. Two more cuts from Drive follow with "Amnios" particularly sumptuous, which is perhaps why Worthy himself chose to rework the track, retaining those haunting chords but twisting the production into something a lot more stripped back and bumpy.

Review: Making a welcome return to the Prescription spin-off Balance, Brawther is in fine fettle with his expressive, bumping deep house concoctions. "GSMs Life" kicks off in earnest with a pronounced swing and stabbing chords in a vintage New Jersey style, while "Spaceman Funk" takes a lighter approach with wistful arpeggios and swirling pads over a more submerged beat. "Le Voyage" gets trackier with its dubby wash and forthright rhythm section ploughing straight into the heart of the mix, leaving it to "Not Another Shouts" to slow things right down with the hazy early morning light of mellow Rhodes and whistling kettle signalling the end of the party.

Collating the myriad aliases of the Mosaic boss and drawing on some on his co-conspirators such as Mark Ambrose and Jorge Zamacona, this triple vinyl beast of a package is overflowing with high-grade house music powered with the attitude of techno. There's a classic feel to all the tracks here as they carry the torch for Basic Channel and the original dub techno ethos, but attaching the spacious, mysterious tones to a funkier template. That possibly oversimplifies the majestic quality to this breed of techno, but then of course the devil is in the details.

Review: 124 Recordings serves up its fourth release with the Dusty Chords EP from Austrian producer Fabe. This 12" starts deep and remains there throughout; Fabe's titular original cut sees slow moving pads ease in alongside a protruding, yet still eminently soulful vocal and is matched by the two remixes on offer. Prolific Zurich based producer Washerman tones down the peak time serviceability with his remix, adding more filters with less talk, and Desos fathoms just as deep in his remix, but instead of extra filters, he adds his own riffing bassline in between short burst of kerfed vocals.

The first of the three mixes - the vocal mix - sees descending piano keys fall upon ascending pads and punchy licks of acid bass, while a cabasa lead house groove drives the track in territory labels like Head Kandi could only dream about reaching. Sharing the A-side is a reprise which features almost everything from the original - except for the kick drum - giving the vocals even more importance than the vocal mix. The dub version doesn't deviate too far from the original either, following a similar trajectory - building from a slow and mesmeric sequence into a full bodied and dreamlike groove.

What began in earnest with the 2011 Synthetes EP has grown into a trilogy of 12" releases through Don't Be Afraid that signalled a subtle swerve in production style from "jobbing beatmaker" towards a more defined 4/4 approach. Last year's Sun Goddess EP was a sublime collection of Beatnick material that seemed to refuse to leave record boxes, and the four tracks here demonstrate a further development and enrichment of his sound. The title track and "Symbiosis" contain the kind of loose rhythmic house rich in melody that Beatnick's shown on previous DBA forays but our favourite is undoubtedly the startling basement house/hardcore hybrid "Parallax Scroll".

Tapping into the love the label bosses have for rootsy boogie, disco and soul, these house jams come steeped in authenticity from a city synonymous with the traits on display here. "Runaway" rocks a diva clarion call over the romantic electro bassline and laconic piano chords for a sugary sweet cruise through SC's own patent E-Funk. "Love Youx (Don't)" is a more mysterious affair, catching a jazzy hook and plotting a course for more Moodymann style territory, while "Love Youx Forever" takes a thoroughly familiar vocal turn and drops it into a deep house ballad of bombastic proportions.
