Review: Following 2012's fourth volume that celebrated the existential work of Tim Maia, here we find Luaka Bop exploring the legacy of William Onyeabor. A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

Apache
Shaft In Africa
Review: ** Repress for the breaks dons ** The long awaited new Visioneers Limited Edition 45 produced by Marc Mac of 4hero is here at last on BBE offshoot Omniverse. No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. On the A-Side a version of The Shadows classic ''Apache'' gets flipped by Visioneers remake of Johnny Pate's B-Boy bomb "Shaft In Africa". Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

Send Him Back (original mix)
Send Him Back (Pilooski edit)
Review: It's unofficial 'let's remember how great Pilooski is' week! The Frenchman's excellent robo-funking take on LCD Soundsystem's 45:33 was the subject of a much needed reissue via DFA's White Out series and now the dinked Originals label offers up one of Pilooski's best edits. Whilst that Frankie Valli edit might have brought Cedric Marszewski to great acclaim when it featured on the Adidas advert that inspired this record label series, let's not forget there were much better examples of his masterful craft on those Dark & Lovely 12"s that started surfacing in 2006. Chief amongst them was his barn-storming take on "Send Him Back" by The Pointer Sisters that deftly upped the dynamism of the original via some subtle handclaps, beefed up low end and killer looping. It will remain a certified dancefloor killer for many years to come.

Wganda Kenya - "Tipit Hayed" (Blundetto remix -Nik's edit)
Fruko Y Sus Tesos - "Salsa Na Ma" (original mix)
Review: Two more slices of official dance floor dynamite from the Disco Fuentes catalogue get unleashed on the strictly vinyl only, singles only Mukatsuku Record label for summer 2013. First up is an unreleased version of the popular Wganda Kenya club favourite 'Tipit Hayed' which Blundetto had done a few years ago for his own DJ sets but never surfaced commercially. On the flipside a bona fide salsa funk monster which a piano intro to die for from Fruko Y Sus Tesos. The Juno edition of the single comes in exclusive packaging of kraft paper hand stamped inner sleeve, additional branded card sleeve, sticker and plastic protective outer sleeve. As played by Joey Negro, Sadar Bahar,Ashley Beedle, Adesse Versions,Eddie C etc etc...

Stevie's Lady (Scrimshires Golden edit)
Handle It (Scrimshires Sylver edit)
Review: Wah Wah 45s have been championing Scrimshire for a long, long time. His original productions shimmer with a fine-tuned sense of musicality and lush cinematic textures and his edits are exemplary examples of respectful pimping (most notably his recent Merry Clayton renditions). Here we find him in 'edit mode' as Stevie Wonder gets a dreamy extension with a heavy emphasis on the fluttering piano and The Sylvers are playfully tweaked and teased into more of a dubbed out bass version. Scrimshire? Pimpshire, more like.

Ray Bryant - "Up Above The Rock"
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - "On The Run"
Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

Marcia Maria - "Meu Amigo Branco"
Ray Barretto - "Pastime Paradise"
Eddie Palmieri - "Spirit Of Love"
Paulinho Da Costa - "Love 'Til The End Of Time"
Yambu - "Sunny"
Review: From the creative, crate-digging minds of the Supafrico imprint, Supalatino digs deep into rich annals of South American disco and funk to present five previously rare-as-hen's-teeth floor fillers. Highlights include Ray Barretto's extended cover of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise", Marcia Maria's seductive, off-beat vocal delivery on "Meu Amigo Branco" and the soul jazz fusion of "Sunny", a track that's gave the house scene a very well-known brass sample. Heavenly.

The Ghetto 74
The Ghetto 77
Review: ** SUOHNO REPRESS **Two gorgeous re-edits here from Italian funk stallion Suonho. "Ghetto 74" takes the Leroy Hutson standard and tones down the flare-swinging, sideburn sizzling bravado for much more of a liquid groove. On the B we see him giving George Benson similar treatment but with more of a jazzy, deep house vibe. Two well selected ghetto makeovers; this is a very clever package.

Mbiri Young Stars - "Ndiri Ndanogio Niwe" (Batida 1977 remix) (5:47)
Kalambya Boys - "Kivelenge" (The Busy Twist remix) (4:46)
Nairobi Matata Jazz - "Mapenzi Hayana Daktari" (Frankie Francis edit) (6:09)
Gatanga Boys Band - "Tiga Kundega" (Hide & Smile edit) (3:48)
Review: Prepping us for the Kenya Special compilation, here's a selection of the respectfully remixed highlights. Soundway have done all the research: it seems the Mbiri Young Stars and Kalambya Boys originals were way ahead of their time weighing in at five minutes plus and already oozing subs long before Batida and The Busy Twist got their edit-ready fingers on them. Elsewhere we find Frankie Francis adding a little extra oomph to the Congo rumba of "Mapenzi Hayana Daktari" and Hide And Smile adding a tribal urgency to the Benga drums on "Tiga Kundega".
