Propulsion!!!
Hey! Last Minute (Brazil edit)
Review: Philly funk connoisseurs Personify and Case Bloom hook up to form brand new crack editing pact Dirty Burners. "Propulsion!!!" is a rolling slab of timeless drum funk complete with the sleaziest guitar hook we've heard so far this year. "Hey! Last Minute", meanwhile, takes the JBs deep into the dirtiest corners of Rio for a steamy horn session that's so lewd it should come with an 18 certificate. Limited stocks and represses: burn this one up as soon as you can.

If You Want My Love
You That I Need (3:24)
Review: Sporty Cat Dwight Sykes lets loose with a brand new original and super spacy track from last year's album Songs Volume One for the ever excellent Peoples Potential Unlimited!! "If You Want My Love" is straight out of the '80s playbook thanks to its gossamer synths and on-point female rap (that's delivered by his daughter Valerie Sykes). Flip for the filmic synth boogie introspection of "You That I Need". Another must grip 7" from the PPU crew.

Funky River (3:40)
The Devil Made Me Do It (3:11)
Review: Hyper-rare and spotted passing hands for four-figure sums, this Virgin Islands funk 45 is a near perfect doublet. With raw showman vibes flexed on "Funky River" and a rougher, bluesy early Stones style R&B jam on the B, they come from the incredibly named Lord Sausage (AKA Al Sinclair). With this 45 he teetered on the edge of worldwide propulsion back in 1973. Unfortunately the experience with heavy-handed US, dollar-sign-eyed promoters left him jaded and he never made another record like it again. Fortunately, though, Crowbar have repressed this... And it's pretty much essential.

Dave Cortez & The Moon People - "Happy Soul (With A Hook)"
La Lupe - "Fever"
Review: Heavyweight Latin funk from 1968: In case you're unacquainted, "Happy Soul" is the ultimate super-swing sample source of Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man", and remains the most distinctive cut in Cortez & The Moon People's extensive repertoire. We head over to Cuba for the B-side as La Lupe digs deep with a sun-splashed salsa cover of "Fever". Swelteringly good.

One Man's Love Is Another Man's Poison
Soul Power (instrumental)
Review: A powerful soul/funk reissue right here... Last spotted passing hands for well over a tonne, Lil Ray & The Fantastic Four delivered two anthems on this 45. "One Man's Love" is a floor-stamping northern soul shaker with thick horn blasts and big hearted vocals. "Soul Power", meanwhile, is a sensational instrumental loaded with wriggling Hammond lashes, freestyle flutes and party chants so infectious you'll be blocking off your street and calling your neighbours out for a street party before the needle leaves the groove. The ultimate remedy.

Review: Fresh from winning best album accolades for last year's Inner Fire, Canadian troupe Souljazz Orchestra return to their second album from 2007 for a heavyweight vinyl reissue, all remastered and highly limited. Now six albums deep into the journey, the band have really found their groove... And it's earlier outing like this that show how they got there. From the skat-madness of the title track to the highlife beauty of "Secousse Soukous" via the chest-press horns and wild jazz frontier of "Mugambi", this is a great rewind to a formative time for one of modern jazz's most exciting bands.

Rainy Night In Georgia
The Sad Chicken
Review: Leroy Jones and Butch Yates' criminally overlooked and painfully under-prolific troupe Leroy & The Drivers really should have had much more presence in the deep funk realms. Here Tramp pay respect with a reissue of their most famous single; "Rainy Night In Georgia" is a slow, jazz-blues number that's smoky in nature and sounds like The Meters after a very long and hectic night. For most fans, though, it's all about "The Sad Chicken". Famously recorded on the fly to use up spare studio time, it's a frenetic, freestyle jam that somehow finds its way into a funeral dirge right at the end. Incredible. Sad chickens have never made us feel happier.

How Can You Be So Cold (3:53)
Unique (2:05)
Review: How Can You Be So Cold sees Tramp doing what they do best and unearthing the qualities of lesser known gospel-singer-turned-funk-band-leader Lee Mitchell. Released in the mid 60s via J.R Fullbright, this was his second - and widely received as his best - single. "How Can You Be So Cold" is a raw, yearning slice of emphatic soul where the vocals take the centre stage while "Unique" completely flips the focus for a frenzied funk instrumental that's not dissimilar to The Meters (except delivered a good few years earlier)

Foxy Lady
Foxy (dub)
Review: Killer reissue alert! Hendrix's good name has been sullied by all sorts of unnecessary bootlegs and crude edits over the years... But Tex's repurposes are the exception that proves the rule. Two twists on the matchlessly funky "Foxy Lady", both are awesome. And have been since he first delivered them in 2008. The original is straight up funk with big organs and a powerful groove while the dub is exactly that. Mildly skanked and hotter than heater, it will melt any floor you care to address with it.

Review: Seminal funk album from Lyn Collins. Released in 1972 on James Brown's People Records, everything about this is immaculate and of its time. Not just home of one of the most important breakbeats of our time but home to entire collection of immaculately delivered soul and funk gems; from her cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" to the deep yearning reflection of "Never Gonna Give You Up", this is Lyn at her finest. Complete with a special 45 and poster, if this album isn't in your collection yet, now is most definitely the time.
