Review: Unsurprisingly, Aromanticism - meaning to have little or no romantic attraction to others - is exactly the idea Moses Sumney explores on this stunning debut. Having written the majority of this album's lyrics in the solitude of remote north American cabins, Sumney's songs about loneliness and distance feel natural and sincere. Throughout 'Aromanticism' Sumney shows off his affinity with vocal acrobatics, leaping from his rasping lower register to achingly dulcet falsetto. Both in his instrumentation and as a vocalist, Sumney strikes a pitch-perfect balance between acoustic and digital, exhibiting his ability to blend the two. Sumney blends passages of spoken word, neo-soul, broken-beat, and the vocal harmonies and movements, cascading with gospel precision, that shone on his 2016 EP 'Lamentations'. 'Aromanticism' is a powerful and heartfelt opening statement from an artist well worth keeping an eye on in the future.

Review: Be With Records look to continue a consistent run of reissuing important rarities by unearthing this gem from Arthur Russell's discography. This debut from the short-lived New York outfit The Necessaries is a key moment in the city's early 1980's art-rock/new-wave movement. Led by artist and composer Ed Tomney and formed of members of East-Coast tastemakers such as The Modern Lovers & Red Crayola, 'Event Horizon' sounds both of its time and forward thinking - playing with angular garage abrasion, jangling oddball art-rock and pop warmth. Russell's involvement, a year after forming respected disco group Loose Joints and just prior to writing his experimental solo cello work, is testament to his broad versatility and voracious love of music. This is an essential album for both Arthur Russell enthusiasts and collectors and lovers of East Coast new wave.

Review: 'Music For People In Trouble', the latest missive from Norwegian singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfor, is a marked departure from 2015's 'Ten Love Songs'. Here, Sundfor omits euphoric synth-pop hooks in favour of a quietly confident and dappled choral aesthetic. The ideas at work in this album are as varied as those in her previous work, but feel far more cohesive in their execution. Over two songs, Sundfor smoothly transports the listener from the fingerpicking country and western of 'Reincarnation' to an intimate solo piano ballad then to smoky jazz club noir in 'Good Luck Bad Luck'. Without ever feeling heavy-handed, this considered sense of movement and form - paired with Sundfor's at times heart-wrenching lyrics - is what makes 'Music For People In Trouble' so striking.

Review: Numero Group, respected musical explorers and archivists, delve into a significant turning point in 1960's culture. 'Warfaring Strangers: Acid Nightmares' documents the dawn of a more paranoid and abrasive psychedelia following the demise of the optimistic hippie movement. Compiled from rare and extremely limited pressings, these eighteen rough and ready tracks provide a visceral insight into the darker side of American lysergic rock, and could almost be an alternative soundtrack to Easy Rider. By digging up this unheard chapter of 1960's music, Numero Group have perhaps also revealed some of the roots of genres that rose decades later, setting a rough template for the future of metal, grunge and stoner rock.

Review: The Canadian post-rock instrumentalists return with a demand for revolution, soundtracked by just shy of 45 minutes of orchestral aggression. As with all of their work, GY!BE convey their ideas articulately through evocative wordless music. The opener, 'Undoing a Luciferian Towers' sets a tone for the album with a monolithic and militaristic march. Passages of feedback open out into anthemic expanse on the three parts of 'Bosses Hang'. 'Fam/Famine' balances between harmonic assonance and dissonance, ramping up the tension before the final triptych 'Anthem Of The State' takes a more optimistic tone, with the movement away from noise providing some glimmers of light in the abyss. 'Luciferian Towers' is an impeccable and polished record, and possibly Godspeed You! Black Emperor's finest to date.

Sleep Well Beast
Review: Seven albums in, The National have solidified their songwriting with confident nuance, and 'Sleep Well Beast' is another milestone on this consistent band's upward curve. Standout ballad 'Carin at the Liquor Store' waltzes and wanders through melancholic nostalgia and glimmers of hope, exemplifying the sound and storytelling that The National are so renowned and respected for. Small cracks in the concrete gloom appear with the more energetic and optimistic tracks, allowing just enough light in for this masterfully executed album to encourage repeat listens, which will in turn, and as always, provide ample rewards.

Review: It's either regrettable or fascinating when an artist established in one genre reinterprets an album by an artist established in another. Thankfully, Norwegian producer Prins Thomas' versions of Swedish psychedelic group Dungen's 2016 album 'Haxan' falls into the latter category. The new revisions respectfully hold on to the progressive and psychedelic leanings of the original analogue tapes on which they are based, whilst expanding them into a richer, warmer and more spacious production. Though it's not quite the Nordic disco/house we would normally expect of Prins Thomas, his 'Haxan' versions prove to be a compelling listen and are ultimately testament to the producer's musical versatility.

Review: Six years ago, an iconic and emotional concert at Madison Square Gardens marked the end of LCD Soundsystem. The accompanying documentary 'Shut Up and Play The Hits' delved into frontman James Murphy's reasons for the decision, with self-examination, a need for change and a fear of old age playing a part. Fast forward to 2017, and the surprise release of three singles accompanying the announcement of a comeback album triggers anticipation and a sigh of relief from fans everywhere. 'American Dream' meets expectations and at times surpasses them, with the familiar driving disco rhythms, strutting funk basslines and heartfelt morning-after-the-night-before ballads feeling like a well-needed catch up with an old friend. The current musical, social and political climates provide Murphy with platforms for his self-effacing and acerbic witticisms. This strong return to form was needed now perhaps more than ever, but simultaneously feels like they never left in the first place.

Review: F ingers (mind the gap) are a Melbourne based trio led by 'part time Berliner' Carla dal Forno with Tarquin Manek (her partner in Tarcar) and Samuel Karmel. Following up their debut in on London's Blackest Ever Black in 2015, this curious Aussie bunch serve up another collection of trippy lo fi electronics for getting stoned to. Recorded between 2015 and 2017, you'll be entranced as dal Forno's pure tonal vocal effects are set adrift above Manek's supple basslines and Karmel's subtle synth washes.

Review: The second album from questionably spelt Canadian five-piece Alvvays doesn't see them straying too far from their comfort zone, but only because they don't particularly need to. Stylistically, the band are good at what they do, snugly nestled in the ethereal pop sound we've come to recognise from groups such as Best Coast, Beach House and Camera Obscura. Clocking in at just over half an hour long, the follow-up to 2014's self-titled debut is kept short and sweet, providing a lean and sentimental album full of jangling guitars, satisfying chord progressions and relatable emotional intelligence that will continue to please current fans, and more than likely enamour a swathe of new ones.
