Hands & Brains (5:23)
False Prophecy (5:32)
Forbidden (4:25)
I Settled For Her Leftovers (5:25)
Review: Electro pushers Koova, Yes Effect and Pip Williams are back with their London Modular Alliance project, a consortium of sounds that clearly don't need much of an explanation. Their one rule is that this is all improv business, no mucking about with needless arrangements on tacky DAWs. This is the first Dimensions Recordings EP that's not a VA, so it's a tiny landmark for both them and the artists; the title tune "Hands & Brains" kicks off with a squelching acid stomper with an abrasive stomp of melodies, and "False Prophecy" is the point at which things take a turn for the electro nuttiness, all sombre and grey-scaled. On the flip, "Forbidden" takes the path down more tranquil waters with a peaceful balearic sway, and "I Settled For Her Leftovers" bumps out the bass good and proper, bruising us with its heavy-loaded sub-bass. Heavy gear!

I Need A Freak (4:53)
My House (On The Nile) (long version) (10:27)
Review: Anyone who has seen one of Egyptian Lover's riotous live shows will confirm the role that classic cut "I Need a Freak" plays in proceedings. During performances, he attempts to get female members of the audience going by altering the lyrics to suit the occasion - a tactic that usually gets a rapturous response. Despite being recorded in the '80s (and eventually released in 1994), the track has lost none of its energy or appeal; it should be in the collection of any genuine electro enthusiast. There's another treat on the flip in the shape of the rarely seen extended version of 1984 cut "My House (On The Nile)", which is every bit as essential as the A.

Seduced (remix) (4:47)
Seduced (instrumental) (4:50)
Belly Dance (long version) (7:25)
Review: One-man electro sex machine Egyptian Lover has been doing the rounds of European festivals this summer, bringing his distinctive brand of hardware sleaze to a new generation of dancers. It seems fitting, then, that his latest 12" includes previously unreleased versions of live show favourites "Seduced" and "Belly Dance" (both of which originally appeared on 2015 album 1984). The A-side boasts "Remix" and "Instrumental" versions of "Seduced", both of which are typically 808-heavy and include the eccentric producer's usual Middle Eastern inspired synthesizer melodies. On the B-side, the LA veteran has slipped in an extra-long version of "Belly Dance", a spacey, punchy and cowbell-laden workout in his trademark style.

Really Inception (3:26)
Review: Rawax's latest electro outing comes from one of the Godfathers of the Detroit electro scene, former Aux88 associate DJ Di'jital. Given his pedigree, it's no surprise to find that Final Frontier of Electro is pretty darn good. Across the six tracks he touches on numerous electro variants - ghetto-tech, Miami bass, the Kraftwerk-inspired early New York style and Drexciyan intensity - combining them into thrilling new hybrid shapes. It's rare to find an EP with this many high-grade club tracks, making picking highlights tricky. That said, we're particularly enjoying the thrusting, all out assault of "Injection Star" and the intergalactic, techno-influenced hustle of the forthright title track.

Porta 1 (8:09)
Review: Amsterdam based Lonely Planets considers itself a guide for interplanetary backpackers and lost cosmonauts. Following up some great releases by Missing Crew Member and Sinan Alakus of Dilated Pupils, they now tap local lad Jack Roland for their third release. On the A side we have got "The Others", an intergalactic electro trip on the deeper tip, while "Lost" gets more up in your face in brooding and dystopian style that calls to mind the work of the legendary Carl Finlow. On the flip, Roland delves more into techier sounds, like on the tunnelling epic "Solar Panels" which we thought was a highlight. Closing out this fine EP is the deep lo-fi house shenanigans of "Porta 1" absolutely sublime in all its tape saturated glory and will appeal to all Lobster and E-Beamz fans for sure.

Loft Lunar (8:19)
Tenebrosys (7:34)
Slippery Master (7:30)
Nautravellius (7:27)
Review: New London based imprint Breakfast Musik inaugurate their label with a release by Uruguayan talent Cosmonaut: not to be confused with the Ukrainian superstar DJ of the same name. Real name Fede Jorcin from Montevideo, these retro flavoured jams will appeal to fans of the current sound of Berlin, emanating from the headquarters of Cabaret, Libertine or My Own Jupiter. Starting off with the deep bleep techno of "Loft Lunar" sounding like classic Stasis, the four to the floor electro of "Tenebrosys" up next really gets the party started. On the flip, there's a mellower strain of electro on "Slippery Master" (that's more reminiscent of Gosub) while the closing track "Nautravellius" goes out with a right blast: featuring that syncopated bang and clatter of vintage drum computers assisted by the funk of classic acid sounds.

The Styx Swamp (5:29)
The Styx Swamp (Perseus Traxx remix) (6:29)
Sailing The Nether Waterways (5:46)
Gray Slope (5:55)
Review: Italian electro expert Heinrich Dressel returns after recent offerings for fellow Romans Mannequin, electronique.it and MinimalRome. This time for Zagreb based Barba, who've served up some great ones recently by the likes of Alex Cortex, Aubrey and Gosub. "The Styx Swamp" is classic electro vibes with a good injection of funk for added dancefloor dynamic. Label mate Perseus Traxx does a great job on the remix up next. On the flip, it's more of a classic, Larry Heard /Chicago deep house vibe on "Sailing The Nether Waterways" until that dark bassline comes rushing in, of course! Finally "Gray Slope" sounds very familiar.. even if it isn't. Maybe because it just channels that good ol' Drexciya and Dopplereffekt vibe so well: and that's a compliment.

Caseer - "Intergalactic Suburb Area" (6:10)
Transonic Flow - "Reality Desintegrates" (7:00)
Diffuse Arc - "Ocean" (5:25)
Review: It is a brazenly retro affair that inaugurates new Parisian imprint Into Laniakea. The imprint is run by one Raphael Cesario aka Caseer: who previously headed up the label Unlearn which presented works over the last few years by Chris Mitchell and Walt J among others. 160 Mega Parsec is a lovely four tracker that adheres to the aforementioned aesthetic of dusty/lo-fi and classic sounds. Taking his cues from the timeless Windy City groove of the legendary Mr Fingers is Torino's passEnger, on the first side. Much like his EP for Tabernacle in 2015, "Imperfect Tense" is yet another sublime journey through analogue dreams. On the flip, strap yourself in for some breakneck, Drexciyan-electro shenanigans courtesy of Transonic Flow on "Reality Desintegrates" while Oscar Rodriguez returns as Diffuse Arc on the deep VHS styled memoir "Oceans".

Review: Former Output man Marc Nguyen Tan has been pretty active since returning to production after a 10-year absence back in 2015. Here, his revival continues via a collaborative EP alongside similarly experienced Dane Kasper Bjorke. The headline attraction is undoubtedly "Black Magic", a sleazy and occasionally intense workout that wraps ragged acid lines, mind-altering electronics and hushed, new wave style vocals around a blistering post-punk drum pattern. The post-punk influences come to the fore on the decidedly fuzzy "101" and "Real Slow", which is thrillingly unusual and full of all manner of bizarre electronic flourishes and wayward saxophone solos. A couple of raw, stripped-back demo versions complete an impressive EP.

Track 4 (4:27)
Review: Having taken the summer off - presumably to recharge their batteries - the robots behind Germany's Varvet label are back. For the label's third release they've enlisted debutants Disabled, a production duo comprising Stockholm's Cynthia Stern and veteran techno producer Tobias Schmidt (Tresor, Vivod, Don't etc.). There's a real "full throttle" feature to the untitled opener, whose fizzing electro synths seemingly buzz around a slamming techno groove. "Track 2" sees them reaching for surging analogue sub-bass, ghostly electronic melodies and jacking 4/4 beats, while "Track 3" is a panicked romp through angular electro pastures. Wisely, they allow listeners a bit of a breather in the shape of closer "Track 4", a far more becalmed chunk of ghostly, horror-influenced deep electro.

Review: 23 years have passed since Edward Upton first donned the DMX Krew alias, but the prolific British producer shows no signs of slowing down. Astonishingly, Strange Directions is the electro stalwart's 21st full-length excursion. Predictably, it's rather good, with Upton delivering a set that effortlessly body-pops between vocoder-laced electro workouts, melodious IDM, bass-heavy intelligent techno, gnarled Drexciyan throbbers, Artificial Intelligence style home listening fare and even a dash of muscular, tongue-in-cheek Italo-disco (the deliciously sleazy "Soft Networks"). As usual, the distinctive, off-kilter swing of original analogue hardware is present throughout, as Upton showcases his full range of talents. Recommended.
