Street Halo
NYC
Stolen Dog
Review: Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

Inna Daze
Won't Hurt
Review: Pangaea's bruising take on bass music has always enchanted us here at Juno, and we're pleased to see the producer return to the Hessle Audio imprint he runs with David Kennedy for the label's 17th release. A Side cut "Inna Daze" is the big one here, with freaky vocal snippets expertly arranged amongst the crisp metallic drums which form a quick paced rhythmic backbone. No wonder Kennedy (aka Pearson Sound, Ramadanman and Maurice Donovan) picked it up for his upcoming Fabriclive mix. Flip over for "Won't Hurt", an uncompromising encounter marked by demented mechanical strings and frenetic shuffling percussion.

Deep House
Jels
Wade In
Review: ** JOY O REPRESS ** Ray Keith's nephew tries out the latest variant on Joy Orbison with a return to Hotflush that demonstrates just how far he's progressed since the HYPH MNGO days. If "Ladywell/BB" signalled his intentions to take a house-centric turn, then "Jels" & "Wade In" is O/Orb/Orbison tackling Chicago and Detroit in his own inimitable style. "Jels" arrives with a synth wash swagger, dropping into crisp 808 rhythms and future Detroit synths that build towards an emotive drop into the throbbing main. Craftily switching between snarling acid leads and elegant piano flourishes, it's a bold dancefloor statement. "Wade In" looks to the emotive deepness of Chicago, adding some glorious tropical touches to the thudding rhythmic thrust with uplifting results. There's a point where the pads are stretched right out in unison with the subaqueous vocal harmony which is truly blissful. You don't really need us to point this out for you, but this is gonna be huge.

When I Dip
Review: Nonplus allow us a peek at what the forthcoming Instra:mental album will sound like and on the evidence of these two tracks it's going to be quite rowdy indeed! "Thomp" was perhaps named in honour of the sensation that hits you as soon as the truly evil juke rhythm finds its place amidst the bass heavy industrial mist. Embellished by loose rackets of percussion, "Thomp" is a thrilling example of how Instra:mental are always looking to flip the sonic script. The flipside presents 'When I Dip", a trip into the swift retro electro territory Addison Groove recently explored on Swamp 81, with a brilliant vocal sample battling it out with rough futurist vibes over crisp 808 rhythms.

The Wilhelm Scream
What Was It You Said About Luck
Half Heat Full (Old Circular)
Review: Swift off the back of his eponymous, opinion splitting debut album, the rather statuesque James Blake delivers perhaps the highlight of the set "The Wilhelm Scream" on a rather pristine twelve inch backed with two unreleased compositions. Being exposed to the expansive yet claustrophobic atmospherics of "The Wilhelm Scream" nice and loud on 45rpm flushes you with the sensation the track has found its natural home. The new material further descends into introspective harmonisation with "What Was It You Said About Luck" notable for the arrival of a sumptuous electronic organ. "Half Heat Full (Old Circular)" appears to be the end product of Blake recording from the bottom of a well and is further example of his willingness to fully experiment with sonics despite his currently elevated position. (The witch house fans amongst you might delight in playing this at the wrong speed).

Avalanche
101
Review: Photek aka Rupert Parkes returns after a four year absence to a current climate of musical inspiration and endeavour perhaps similar in spirit to the days of jungle in which he made his name with such breathtakingly unique productions as "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu". In the period since then Parkes has struggled to fit his own musical ideas into the contemporary template, with some more memorable than others (compare his Robert Owens collab "Mine To Give" with the hip-hop styles of "We Got Heat"). "Avalanche" sees Photek embracing UK bass with resolutely impressive results, applying his own sonic identity to the rhythmic thrust of dubstep. Complementing this is the rumbling subterranean flex of "101", filled with dramatic excursions into cinematic synth outbursts. Welcome back Rupert!

Hip Love
Hip Love (Jamie XX remix)
Review: Two of electronic music's most exciting talents converge on one stunning record on Ramp. New Yorker FaltyDL turns in the original cut here, with "Hip Love" serving as the perfect diversion for those of you eagerly awaiting his upcoming album on Planet Mu. Falty's idiosyncratic stew of schizophrenic snares, manipulated vocals and murmurings of sub bass are all present and correct, with a particularly tough edge to the rasping kick. Jamie xx takes care of business on the B Side, stripping "Hip Love" of its intricate percussion and turning it into a low end roller with bass frequencies that'll have nightclub sound engineers waking up in cold sweats. Essential release.

Bohla (5:35)
Kaz (6:38)
Lavender (5:21)
Review: Amidst all the rightfully celebrated contributions to the R&S revival from James Blake and Space Dimension Controller last year, the punishing dancefloor update of the label's sonic template from Hemlock boss Untold was sort of passed by. Hailing from Barnsley, Blawan becomes the latest rising talent to appear on the iconic Belgian imprint, and takes his cue from Jack Dunning, fully embracing the 303 sound that characterised the label in its pomp and delivering three thrilling tracks that further demonstrate the budding potential shown on his Hessle Audio debut. Lead track "Bohla" sets the tone, crafting a menacing rhythmic swing from a titular growl and smudged bass drums, with intermittent upwards swirls of 303 constantly building and dropping off. "Kaz" proves to be brilliantly schizophrenic in its approach, with intricate drum rhythms cascading around whilst acid lines twist in ten different directions across almost seven freakout-inducing minutes. What really impresses with Blawan is an innate talent for unique rhythms and it's most apparent on the abrasive delight of "Lavender", with rattling percussion covered in a thick viscous bassline truffle shuffle.

War Machine
Aethra
Expansion Ratio
Review: Spread across the A Side of the Valken EP, Reso's aptly titled "War Machine" combines the producer's idiosyncratic combination of Armageddon inducing wobble dubstep and D&B into a frantic dancefloor destroyer. Flip over to see a very different side to the Reso arsenal - firstly the downtempo crackly hip-hip of "Aethra" (our pick of the bunch if you're asking) and chopped up quirkiness of "Expansion Radio". A big release indeed for a producer who has already caught the eye with releases on Hospital, Temjin and Rumble and remixes of Debruit, Drop the Lime, Foamo and Qemists.

Kryptic Minds vs Emika - "Make You Sleep"
Review: D&B-turned-dubstep duo Kryptic Minds seem to have somewhat of a predisposition towards the darker shades of dubstep with their trademark murky basslines, inky black soundscapes, haunting vocals and deep dubs. "Make You Sleep" is no exception to the rule; employing Emika's whispering lyrical prowess with heavy, solipsistic bass and rolling subs, it's another superb venture, building hype for the release of their album, due out later this year (we can't wait!) On the flip, insomnia troubling cut "Can't Sleep" (feat. Alys Be) continues the vibe with more contemplative, melodic blissed out music from the pair, rounding the release off to perfection.

Pulse
Roots
Review: Mala's Deep Medi Musik maintains the monthly release schedule pressure with a third label contribution in as many years from the man known as Vivek. Responsible for one of last year's key releases in the double twelve drop Feel It, Vivek clearly has no qualms with the pressures of following up if the unrelenting industrial pressure of "Pulse is any indicator! Commencing in cinematic fashion; all storm clouds and answer machine beeps, Vivek wastes little time, dropping right into the satisfyingly humongous sounding half step aided by twisted strains of bass and droned out FX. Several sudden drops into the sonic mist throughout add to the unrelenting drama. This is complemented by the eerie freeform shudder of "Roots", equally cinematic in its palette though less sci-fi and more horror, with the incongruous appearance of a flock of birds midway through adding to the sense that it shouldn't work but it does.

The Timps (alternative mix)
Prawn Cocktail (Salva remix)
Review: Om Unit arises on the Civil Music imprint with ominous intent if the overwhelming raw Drexciyan vibes of The Timps are any indication. Leaning heavily on the retro electro template both the title track and "Prawn Cocktail" delight with their rough simplicity, perhaps proving the mantra that less is more. Tough rhythms and infectious analogue melodies combine perfectly - though it's perhaps the overtly dramatic stabs that permeate throughout "The Timps" which prove most effective. The flipside alternative mix of the title track from the man himself replaces the stabby menace with bubbling arpeggios aplenty whilst Frite Nite alumni Salva turns "Prawn Cocktail" into a relentless urgent percussive stepper filled with futuristic flourishes and droned out bass punches.

101 (Boddika Drum Machine mix)
This City
Review: Given Al Bleek's current vein of form - be it via his Boddika alias or the next level Instra:mental output - he was a smart choice to add some contemporary flavour to the latest comeback from Photek. Tasked with reimagining the rumbling subterranean flex of "101", Bleek excels under his Boddika alias, stripping the track of its wanton impulses to indulge in cinematic string flourishes. From these remnants Boddika retains the dramatic vocal refrain, wrapping it in a heavily dubbed-out electro riddim that snaps with percussive detail you'd expect from Mr B. Flip over for the kaleidoscopic live breaks of "This City" which is filled with dizzying vocal effects but still overshadowed by the proceedings on the A Side.
