Review: February 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of the release of Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album "I'm New Here", a set that was later brilliantly reworked by Jamie XX in 2011 ("We're New Here"). To celebrate the album's tenth birthday, XL Recordings has decided to offer up "We're New Again", a fresh "reinterpretation" of the Richard Russell produced set by contemporary jazz hero and beat-maker Maya McCraven. His vision is loose, languid, deep and jazzy, with languid jazz drumming, tight hip-hop beats, soft-touch instrumentation, liquid jazz solos and funk-fuelled basslines combining beneath Scott-Heron's gravelly spoken word vocals. It's an inspired re-invention all told and one fully in keeping with the essence of Scott-Heron's own work. In other words, it's a must-have.

Review: Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Rainer Trueby compiled (or helped to compile) a string of Brazilian-focused compilations for his friends at Compost Records. It's perhaps surprising, then, that it's taken this long for him to get a chance to showcase some gems from his record collection. "Soulgliding" is as smooth, warm and glassy-eyed as you'd expect, with the German DJ/producer serving up a range of mostly obscure jazz-funk, soul-jazz, boogie and slow jam gems. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sparse-but-rich synth-soul of Patrice Rushen's "To Each His Own" and the sun-kissed shuffle of Bridge's "Next To Me", to the saccharine sweetness of Crystal Winds' "Lovers Holiday" and the low-slung jazz-funk bounce of "Memories Of Moments" by Demo Cates.

Review: This month Gil Scott-Heron's final studio album turns ten, so XL Recordings has decided to mark the occasion with a couple of special releases. Beat-maker Makaya McCraven has prepared a fully remixed and reworked version, while the London label has also decided to offer up this double-disc deluxe edition of the inspired original album. "I'm New Here" remains a vital work - one of Scott-Heron's best, we would argue - with the brilliance of his thought-provoking beat poetry and emotional sung vocals being matched by the quality of the deft, inventive 21st century backing tracks conjured up by producer Richard Russell and a wealth of superb musicians. You'll find the bonus material on disc two, with alternate versions and studio-based live recordings being joined by two previously unheard cuts.

I'm Always In The Mood (3:56)
Love Is All We Need (4:50)
Review: First released back in 1978 on Parachute Records, Randy Brown's debut album "Welcome To My Room" is one of the better lesser-known Philadelphia soul style sets of the disco era. The team behind Expansions Records are certainly fans, because their latest "45" offers up two of the album's most potent tracks. A-side "I'm Always In The Mood" is simply superb, with Brown doing his best Teddy Pendergrass impression atop a heavily orchestrated, dancefloor-friendly backing track. Flipside "Love Is All We Need" is a little deeper but no less sumptuous, sounding a little like Vincent Montana producing "What's Going On" era Marvin Gaye. In a word: essential.

90% Of Me Is You (2:49)
It's Worth The Hurt (2:17)
Review:

Another all-time classic from the extensive back catalog of the legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae.

"90% Of Me Is You" is instantly recognizable, it's been sampled countless of times by some of the most seminal Hip Hop artists ever (Large Professor, Jaylib, Mobb Deep & more) & is a bonafide "Rare Groove" sure-shot that never loses it's appeal & is always in demand with DJ's & producers. Perhaps it's the pairing of the languid guitar & strings, or Gwen's sultry vocals & that steady breakbeat that keeps people hooked some 40 years after it's original release? Whatever it is, it's classic material from start to finish!

Backed here with it's original b-side slow jam "It's Worth The Hurt" this super-rare 45 has been re-mastered, re-pressed & brought back for 2015's dance-floors in conjunction & with the permission of T.K. Disco / Henry Stone Music, Miami USA.

Keep It Up (4:10)
The Silence That You Keep (3:28)
Review:

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.

Sugar Free (4:39)
Malcolm X (4:58)
Review: Back in 2017 Cordial Recordings mined the vaults of legendary German jazz-funk and off-kilter disco band Afrodisia and offered up a 7" single featuring a previously unheard track. They're at it again here, accompanying sought-after "Elephant Sunrise" album track "Sugar Free" - a delicious chunk of super-sweet jazz-funk rich in Pat Metheny style jazz lead guitar and scat vocals - with unreleased gem "Malcolm X". It's an up-tempo slab of Azymuth style jazz-funk laden with spacey synthesizer solos, quick-fingered bass guitar, punchy horns and a vibraphone part reminiscent of Roy Ayers. Excellent stuff!

Review: A warm welcome back to TRAMP's flagship compilation series "Movements", a long-running institution that brings together rare finds from the German label's crate-digging chiefs. As with its predecessors, this tenth volume is an eclectic affair that's presented in chronological order (IE oldest tracks first, newest last). There are far too many highlights to mention, though our current favourites include the swinging soul-jazz of Phylis Hendricks' "My Man", the fiery, Mod-style rhythm and blues of "Coming Home Baby" by Ronny Pellers Satin Sound, the dancefloor-focused Latin soul brilliance of The Lido's "Evil Ways" and the superb soul-funk obscurity that is the Headliners "Little Sister (Part 1 & 2)".

Review: It would be fair to say that Twylyte '81 aren't exactly one of the better-known soul-jazz acts of the boogie era. In fact, the Frank Jones, Jnr-helmed act released just one album, "The First Coming", in 1981. It's near impossible to find original copies, so France's Favorite Recordings has done the decent thing and offered up this fully licensed reissue. It's a terrific album all told, with the trio offering up a killer mixture of soulful jazz tracks, effervescent jazz-funk numbers, disco-tinged dancefloor cuts and the kind of heart-achingly good slow jams that tend to get overlooked by DJs when they acquire albums of this sort.
