Review: Perhaps a lurch into the direction of head-spinning psychedelic guitar-driven groove wasn't where fans of DJ Format expected him to go next, but this compilation is proof positive that this man will doggedly pursue the funkiest of sound to the ends of the earth and the very edge of sanity. Collecting together gems from all over the globe, including such far-flung quarters as Uruguay and Yugoslavia, he creates a dizzying and ecstatically fuzzed-out melange that has no problem with jumping off the audial deep end in the pursuit of oblivion and ecstasy. Both a heady triumph and a cleansing experience for the third eye.

Review: 1981's An Eye For An Eye is, to this day, the only LP produced by Byrne & Barnes together, and it's as playful and fresh as the first day it came out. While it's a little more on the synth side of things, it reminds us of other blue-eyed soul artists such as Ned Doheny, and throughout its eleven tunes, there's plenty of romance, mystique and soul-ridden funk. Think of it as the prototypical bridge between a 70's jazz-funk LP and the beginning of pop music as we know it today. Blue-eyed soul at its finest!

Review: An inspirational polymath in the late-'70s Labroke Grove scene, Vivien Goldman may have largely made her name writing for NME on the fertile common ground between punk rock and reggae, yet she took the same boundary-breaking sensibilities and used them to create a dizzying selection of music, collected on this vibrant and compelling compilation. Working with The Flying Lizards, Adrian Sherwood and a wide selection of other luminaries from PiL to Asward, she created forward-thinking rhythmically diverse work whose sense of new horizons and creative possibilities remains potent enough to give this dub-tinged collection an enduring appeal and incendiary spirit.

Review: Ophir Kutiel aka Kutiman is one of those multi-talented artists who can switch from keyboarding to video editing with the flick of a switch and, over the years, this talented Israeli has retained a string foothold on the so-called nu-jazz scene. But, this new album 6am is much more than jazz and it pushes the boundaries of the genre way, way out into the ether. The opener "Jaffa Beach", for instance, is a wayward psych scorcher with a wonderfully driving groove, and others like "Zeelim" bring out a vivid Eastern chime to make this into a truly stunning listening experience throughout. There are also deeper, more soulful moments on the likes of "Stranger Of The Follow", with Adam Scheflan giving the song a moody, spiritual 70s vibe without the usual stereotypes, and the stunning journey into the unknown by the name of "Dangerous". A highly recommended affair...

Review: This may be the last chapter in what stands proud as the mightiest resurrection of a classic band in modern times, yet for all the melancholy to be suffered if this does prove to be the case, frankly, what a way to go. 'The Glowing Man' is full to bursting with the kind of panoramic soundscapes, intense existential gravitas and dramatic crescendos that have characterised Michael Gira & Co's post-2010 output, yet has restraint and subtlety to match its almighty sturm-und-drang - these colossal songs triumph just as much through their dynamics and beauty as their volume and brute force, crowning a startling achievement a singular and overwhelming primal force deserving of awe aplenty.

Review: The low-temperature duo of Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince have always exuded a heavy-lidded charisma, and now as ever their combination of gnarled garage riffage and beat-driven minimalism, overlaid with Mosshart's insouciant vocals finds its virtues in its simplicity. 'Ash & Ice' however, shows a band not afraid to add substance to their style - for every needle-sharp floor-filler like the ESG-sampling 'Siberian NIghts', there's a curveball like the heartfelt Stonesy ballad 'That Love', which has the raw bite of Cat Power. Crucially, fourteen years into their life as a band, this duo still sound unafraid to get their claws out.

Review: That particular twenty-first century phenomenon of the album assembled almost entirely by email finds a particularly charming exponent here in this debut by the don't-call-it-a-supergroup that includes members of Slowdive, Mogwai and Editors. Fans of all three of those bands won't be disappointed by this debut, which bears distinct traces of the dreamy soundscapes of the first, the widescreen cinematic drama of the second and the mighty riffage of the third, whilst arriving at a kind of poppy rapture whose melodious abandon is more surprising than its expansive melancholy, and which reaches a pinnacle in the charming 'For You Always', on which Rachel Goswell's gossamer vocals duel with a guesting Mark Kozelek in a near-knuckle reflection on their friendship and personal histories.

Review: Write off Garbage as a '90s museum piece at your peril - this sixth record is testimony to the fact that they attack with as much glamour and gusto as they ever did in the world before smartphones and social networking. Sonically adventurous as ever, and with Shriley Manson's steely presence and powerful charisma at the forefront. 'Strange Little Birds' is a more confident and heartfelt salvo than 2012's 'Not Your Kind Of People', with its dusky atmospherics bringing a trademark cinematic allure, whilst Manson's songs have an emotional charge that resonantes through the cold electronics and brittle arrangements.

Review: It's been ten years now since this Southend-birthed collection of stylish hoodlums were one of the most divisive and derided bands in NME-land - either ludicrous clothes horses or savvy garage-rock experts depending on who you asked. Yet listening to 'Strange House' after all these years, the eyeliner and the big hair may have largely departed, but this overexcited and uncompromising debut still makes for a bracing and extremely invigorating listen. Vaudevillian flourishes, in-the-red savagery, trashy thrills and even a dash of electronic experimentation make this a document whose black-clad brio and youthful gung-ho spirit seems paradoxically built to last.

Review: This New York City based duo comprises Che Chen and Rick Brown, largely on guitar and drums respectively, and their inspiringly unclassifiable sound, influenced by Indian music and Mauritanian guitar work alongside the likes of The Velvet Underground and Bert Jansch, weaves a mantric tapestry that's as minimal as it is expansively majestic. These four lengthy excursions whir the listener into a drone-fuelled and raga-infused frenzy that's as likely to appeal to fans of Sun City Girls and Tony Conrad, packing an elemental charge that's as richly invigorating as any summer soundtrack you care to mention.

Review: Fans of the wistful charm and sleepy rapture of Band Of Horses' first two albums should rejoice, for after the rather more mainstream wanderings of 2010's 'Infinite Arms' and 2012's 'Mirage Rock', the band appear to have rediscovered the subtleties and finely-honed delicacy that made them special in the first place. Yet this is not to say that there aren't moments of melodic grandeur and pop suss to be found herein - 'Casual Party' may be the catchiest song the band have ever done, proving that they're as happy with a New Order-style pop ditty as the Neil Young-esque expanses of epic opener 'Dull Times/The Moon'. The songwriting here is thoughtful, the arrangements spare and sparkling, and Band Of Horses sound in rude health.

Review: A vibrant and zesty art-rock quartet from Toronto, Weaves have made a debut that brims with both intent and good old-fashioned fun, a demolition derby of punk-tinged brio and candysweet pop suss. The frenetic air of sonic brinksmanship - with restless rhythms and abrasive guitar scree holding court - might seem at odds with the colourful melodies herein, but Weaves appear to have the nous to make both spark off each other to provide a tonic as likely to appeal to fans of Romeo Void, Erase Errata or Patti Smith alike. Most importantly, in an indie milieu increasingly failling prey to rock classicism, this is band with quirky character and incandescent chutzpah to burn.
