All This Love That I'm Givin' (3:53)
Maybe I'll Find Somebody New (3:25)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Robot Jam (part 1) (6:43)
Robot Jam (part 2) (5:29)
Robot Jam (Nick The Record & Dan Tyler rerub) (8:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT! If you read interviews with Stuart Leath, you'll probably be aware of the amount of work he was put into tracking down Trinidadian husband-and-wife team Carl and Carol Jacobs. Some 24 months later, the fruits of his efforts have materialized in this superb reissue of their obscure (and ludicrously hard to find) 1986 electro-calypso gem "Robot Jam". It's one of those records that shouldn't work - it's effectively a fusion of replayed and re-sung bits from records by Santana, Rock Master Scott and Rappin' Duke - but still sounds brilliantly futuristic nearly 30 years after its' initial release. The two-part original is joined on the flip by a brilliantly fitting, echo-laden "re-rub" from Nick The Record and Dan Tyler, better known as one half of the Idjut Boys.

Art Of Tones - "Steppin In & Out" (5:24)
Harry Wolfman - "Eroticity" (6:12)
Harry Wolfman - "Schoolin" (7:57)
Review: It's something of a pleasant surprise to see French veteran Ludovic Llorca popping up on the second volume of House of Disco's HODSTASH edits series. Under his Art of Tones alias, the one-time F Communications stalwart turns in a couple of house-friendly cut-ups of classic tracks. "Unlimited Love", for example, offers a head-nodding, toe-tapping rework of Love Unlimited Orchestra's slow dance classic "Love's Theme", while "Stepping In & Out" successfully chops and tools up a similarly familiar disco classic. House of Disco regular Harry Wolfman continues the theme on the flip, delivering a banging version of Prince classic "Erotic City", before closing proceedings with the sweaty P-Funk-goes-tech house chug of "Schoolin".

Track 1
Track 2
Review: Since launching in 2013, the mysterious Secret Squirrel series has provided DJs with a steady stream of floor-friendly, largely obscure edits that gleefully join the dots between Italo, P-funk, acid, disco and vintage house. This seventh installment in the series delivers two more tried and tested bombs, with the early house chug, darting Italo synths and rolling, proto-house grooves of side A leading the way. Things get a little looser on the flip, with a delightfully chugging slice of Prince style purple funk, naturally teasted and tweaked for maximum dancefloor enjoyment. Really, Secret Squirrels releases shouldn't need the hard sell; they hit the spot every time, regardless of style or source material.

Review: Heavyweight edit work Russian-style as Lay Far returns to Basic Fingers with a second weapon armoury. We kick off a percussion-heavy take on Hamilton Bohannon's "Me & The Gang" where full focus is centred on the deep, lolloping groove. Next up is a silky jazz shake up of Pete & Sheila Escovedo's Cobham cover "Bolinas"; instant sunset material, it's going to get heavy airplay at the Croatian festivals this summer without doubt. Dig deeper for a horn-heavy twist of Pleasure's "Bouncy Lady" before hitting the EP highlight... A cosmic, lazer-bending dub disco twist on Mad Professor's "Soul African Crossfire". Each cut crafted with attention to detail, they haven't named them weapons for nothing.

Let's Do It (A Louie Vega interpretation - Louie Vega Dance Ritual mix)
Let's Do It (A Louie Vega interpretation - Louie Vega Boogie mix)
Review: Leroy Burgess's family-affair Convertion dropped this snake-hipped, piano-pumping, early hip-hop/boogie jam in 1980. Back to the future and Master At Work man Louie Vega does the honourable thing and offers up two very distinct edits on this must grip Nervous 12". First up is the Dance Ritual mix that fully displays Vega's classic soft-but-stern jack dynamic, whilst the B side Boogie Mix veers off into more sprawling territory as the tempo eases down slightly and the attention is focused on the slinky percussion that really made the original such a DJ favourite in the first place. Just do it.

Big Pimpin' (3:21)
Review: Armed with a ravishing string/harmony sample that swoons with instant summer breeze, Cole Medina has created this year's essential sunset piece. Armed with the right amount of squelchy low-end weight and groove that won't quit, it's Cole at his very best. For more sample mastery flip for the dubby disco lollops of "Make Your Body Move" and the Vadim-esque cosmic hip-hop meanderings of "Big Pimpin'". Super spacious. Napoleon - "Cosmic Cheetah" (5:19)
Hristo - "Deja Vu" (5:13)
Review: According to the brief press blurb accompanying this first 7" release from the Sudden Edits imprint, Napoleon is the chosen moniker of a previously unheralded Costa Rican disco digger. This may or may not be true, of course, but there's much to suggest that the mysterious producer is a serious talent. His "Cosmic Cheetah" is an eccentric, synth-laden affair and sounds French in origin. Half whispered, sleazy vocoder vocals ride a chugging and slightly exotic rhythm built around winding synths and fuzzy guitars. On the flip, Honey Soundsystem man Hristo drops another gem; a sinewy, string-laden chunk of dewy-eyed slo-mo soul that sounds like it was designed to soundtrack Balearic sunsets and chilly autumnal sunrises.

Jean Claude Gavri - "Share That Beat Of Love" (JCG vinyl mix) (5:21)
Dimitri From Astoria - "Greece Is The Word" (4:06)
Review: Two golden edits with no chin stroking required thanks to the EBO label! Tel Aviv's Jean Claude Gavri does the business on Michael Jackson's "Rock With You", making lavish extensions in all the right places. Dimitri From Astoria (any relation to namesakes from Paris and Blackpool?) follows suit with an equally impressive twist on the Franki Valli classic from Greece. Both already tried and tested floor-jammers since the 70s, these updates do the originals some serious justice.

Love (7:15)
Review: Lafleur, owner of Motor City Wine in Detroit, launches his own Rocksteady Disco imprint with three tracks of delightful percussive charm and jazzy wit. "Peace" is a gorgeous, classic 70's kinda tune in true Salsoul style, while "Consume" is vocal-led and considerably more free-spirited in structure, and "Love" heads back to the dancefloor but this time in a relatively more electronic mode. Choppy vocal samples and thick, bumpy basslines. Splendid stuff.

Waiting For Your Love (4:26)
Review: Even by the dusty-fingered standards of arch crate diggers People's Potential Unlimited, this is something of an obscurity. During the late 1970s, Surinamese musician Usje Sukatma recorded a number of groovy, disco-influenced stoner rock gems most of which barely registered outside of his home country. Back in 2011, PPU rescued the superb "Waiting For Your Love" - his only song in English - from obscurity, sticking it out on an in-demand 7". Here they press it up again, this time on a single-sided 12".

Cock Porn - The Theme (5:59)
Review: Surprisingly, it's been some four years since Croat producer Ilija Rudman dropped his much-played debut album, The Reveal, on Bear Funk. Happily, True Colours - his first outing on Is It Balearic - sees him in fine form, joining the dots between kaleidoscopic synth-funk, rubbery dub-disco, spaced-out boogie and glassy-eyed downtempo jams. Rudman is an expert at capturing the sounds of bygone eras, usually through the use of vintage equipment, while delivering tracks that sound thoroughly fresh and original. It's this that makes True Colours such a fantastic set. Highlights are plentiful, from the close dance smoothness of "Bad Passion" and boogie dub vibes of "All The Time" (check the delay-laden hits and sweeping violins) to the jaunty electro-goes-Balearic brilliance of "Wild Guess".

Auntie Flo - "Die Bailando" (feat Eric Alejendro)
Esa - "Sabela De Cuba" (Afro Synth mix)
Review: Early in 2014, Highlife regulars Auntie Flo and Esa traveled to Cuba to play at the country's biggest music festival. While there, they hooked up with a string of local vocalists and musicians to lay down the first installment of Highlife's World Series. Predictably, it's something of a triumph, with both artists gleefully joining the dots between Afro-influenced drum machine rhythms, traditional Cuban instrumentation and the kind of skewed synths that are such a feature of their work. Auntie Flo's effort is a 13-minute epic featuring the rambling vocals of Eric Eleindro and some snaking trumpet action. It's Esa who steals the show, though, with a dreamy, Balearic-minded cut that sounds like a contemporary update of Hugh Masekela's mid 1980s work.

Originally released on Calendar / Unidisc, here Boom reboot its timeless funk for a brand new chapter of dancefloors. "Magic Mandrake" should be recognisable to many, having enjoyed various edits over recent years, but the whole set smacks of solid disco gold; from the slight dub and Afro fusion on the superbly paced "Soul Machine", the synth-boogie flexes on "Nice & Nasty" and the sweaty, upbeat sex jam that is "Mefisto Boogie". 35 years old and still sounding impeccable... Direct Current - "Everybody Here Must Party Sensation" (GU rework II)
Kellee Patterson - "I Love Music" (GU remastered)
Azymuth - "Brazil" (GU re-edit)
Review: The GU Classiques series of re-edits seems to have given Chicago house veteran Glenn Underground a new lease of life. Whether the scalpel works are new, or have long been staples of his DJ sets, has never been revealed, though we're guessing the latter. Either way, the now long-running series rarely puts a foot wrong, and this seventh installment is another cracker. GU has some fun with Direct Current's "Everybody Here Must Party Sensational", extending the killer, bongo-laden breaks before teasing in the string-laden main section of the track. Arguably even tastier is his rub of Kellee Patterson's high-tempo boogaloo cover of O'Jays classic "I Love Music", while the version of Azymuth's "Brazil" on the flip is simply sensational.

Review: Polish duo Holiday 80 deliver an accomplished debut for the ever impressive Whiskey Disco cause, not just as editors but as selectors with a great nose for obscure but wholly relevant source material... Such as this clutch of Polish disco classics. From the Balearic, Faze-O style keys riding high on "Kto Dat Nam" to the early Kraak & Smaak beat-boogie flavours of "Bez Tego I Owego" via the crude new romance and synthetic vibrations on "Zabawa W Stylu Folk", this is a great spread for chefs so young.

Review: Operating jointly from Pescara and Berlin, the Slow Motion Disco label grew out of the collective of the same name and has been serving up vinyl helpings of discotheque dynamite since 2009. A fourth release of the year sees the label look to Francisco for the third in their ongoing series of soundtrack releases. John Carpenter and the mysterious Zio Tibia/Uncle Ankle (the label inform us Italians will know who this is!) are Francisco's stated influences on "Notte Horror", a fine seven minute journey through high octane '80s disco with rippling arpeggios aplenty.

Escape From The Mental Zoo (James Francis remix) (5:46)
Review: Ooh bit of a coup here from the Vivod label who has coaxed some rare produce out of Luke 'Eargoggle' Pettersson's Monkeyshop project with fellow Swede Ronnie Johansson. The project dates back to 2002 when Creme issued the White Loafers Boulevard EP and Johansson and Pettersson have revisited it on an intermittent basis ever since. Those partial to slabs of arpeggio heavy power Italo will be all over the glorious title track "Escape From The Mental Zoo" whilst "Monkey Barouque" veers off into a delightful pocket of euphoria filled electro. The dark undercurrent that seems to run through every Vivod release is present in the remix of "Escape From The Mental Zoo" from James Francis who reimagines the track as six minutes of widescreen and weightless electronics.

Review: Proper party music from two of the most trusted names in the game. Paradise Row is a brand new label and production outlet for both long-standing pillars of the modern disco community, and each of these three launch tracks tip nods right back to the roots. From the brazen piano slapping of "Hanging Out" via the shiny guitar, chugging synth bass and dubbed out vocal tactics of "Machine 16" via the early Chicagoisms-meet-Balearic -guitar-twangs of "Aperol Sunset", there's no fronting or pretention here; just lush floor-focused music that is designed to make you smile.
