Horizons Change
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Etwas stirs in die Ostlich. Edits and verks of twist sounds. Synth pop, cold wave, neu wave, minimal wave, industrial, neu beat, soundtracks and a selbst Balearen. Freiheit! Als erstes is hero of old Cybernetic Broadcast (CBS) and (Intergalatic FM) radio. Jonny 5 and his verstorbenen Blindsign blog and mixes were a steigen'n'steigen to rescue us from boring neu disco. Schieben his search and discovery for harder, but musical soundscapes. 4 edits is a geschmack. Start brave on the floor feel with the Neu Beut Euro Pop thumper Kaka Kaka. Geschleift, verdreht thoughts. Black Hole is hours spent in Eastern Bloc basements graben in the search for drahts. Stoned indeed, immaculate synth electronic battle cruiser, hart percussion, cut gesang and break. Ready for the percussive finale in Horizon's Change. Was Auch Immer. Bahnsteig!

Review: Japan's The Gnocchi aka DJ Nozaki aka HOT10TOT10 delivers his debut album under this particular alias and it comes courtesy of Tokyo's carefully curated Snaker label. Genreless, diverse and wide-eyed, Snaker 005 is a blend of styles and takes inspiration from a number of different corners. Percussive bundles of organic drums are swung and twisted into a knot amid colder bursts of off-kilter electronics and cybernetic sonics. There's also a distinctive acoustic touch to The Gnocchi's arrangements, especially on tracks like "Hard Verdict" where live drumming is totally messed up by digital processing. A truly daring piece of work and it comes warmly recommended.

Review: Icelandic music producer Bjork, who requires absolutely no introduction given her massive contribution to electronic pop music over the last twenty years, finally returns with her new album Vulnicura on One Little Indian Records. Although the LP represents her breakup with Matthew Barney, there are vivid rays of light nested among the more dreary-eyed vocals and melodies. As per usual with her work, there is a distinctive personal touch to her songs. This is most vividly characterised by the droning style of her singing, a sort of juxtaposition when combined to the music below it. Expect an intricate blend of sci-fi electronics, break-ridden power beats and of course, plenty of hard ambience. Bjork's ninth studio album is another winner. This deluxe edition comes with a download code!

Ability To Gain Access (Pye Corner Audio remix)
Mathematical Man (Tomaga remix)
Double Blind (L/F/D/M remix)
Rain (Abul Mogard remix)
Review: Alessio Natalizia's Human Capabilities album was one of the highlights of the label in 2014, so it seems only right to get four artists to create their own unique versions for this EP. Starting with Pye Corner Audio, Martin Jenkins delivers a pulsating remix while Valentina Magaletti (Shit & Shine) and Tom Relleen (The Oscillation) take the industrial loops of "Mathematical Man" and provide an improvised jam of drums, bass and percussion. L/F/D/M's remix of "Double Blind" strips things back to the core of the track, looping it incessantly for maximum intensity before far away melodies bring you back again. The EP closes with a wonderous remix from drone specialist Abul Mogard, who again is at his best, taking the melodic ambience of the original and modulating it in to a brooding and emotional remix.

From The Outside (Actress Generation 4 Constellation mix) (6:50)
Review: Bang! We'd been waiting on this one for quite some time! When you have Actress - contemporary techno pioneer - and Wiley - grime futurist and street innovator - in the same room it's bound to get pretty damn interesting given their respective styles and takes on electronic music. This one-track 12" comes courtesy of Big Dada and it's a true hybrid of the artist's sounds; broken shards of pseudo future bass jitter and twist over howling, deformed vocals in a sea of post-apocalyptic dread. There you go, that's the nearest we can come to describing this devilish little cut and you should cop on sight because this is hell a' limited!

Review: Oh yes, the incorrigible Death Waltz Recording Company have gone and done it again with their latest journey into freaky, gore-filled synth music! This time it's the soundtrack to Lucio Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters, a B-movie classic and a cult hit in the underground horror splasher circles. The musical score comes from Fabio Frizzi who was a master of black comedy, twisting and layering bizarre synth sounds over oddly chirpy melodies with a distinct sense of humour. There's bongos, monkey sounds, far-out percussive shakes and of course, a little bit of the sinister. Limited to 400 copies and comes jam-packed with a whole load of interesting, geeked-out sleeve notes.

Murder The Masters (7:27)
Alien Existence (7:23)
Review: One can safely say that Powell's Diagonal label has grown and prospered a great deal in the last year or two. While the imprint was previously focussed on bringing forth his own chilling pseudo-techno jams, he's just gone and dropped a two-tracker by none other than Consumer Electronics, a lil' old band comprised of Russell Haswell, Philip Best and Sarah Froelich. Conceptual might be the wrong way to describe these jams, but they certainly have an artistic air about them, where "Murder The Masters", for example, chucks a steady 4/4 kick below a dark and sinister male monologue. The B-side, "Alien Existence" evolves it into a relatively more musical affair, where the same voice is now accompanied by a female counterpart and a further injection of drones and metallic sonics.

Review: Berlin label Mannequin are pretty untouchable right now in their quest to document some of the forgotten corners of music past, with their latest focus a truly indepth exposition of crucial '80s industrial band Bourbonese Qualk. One of those retrospectives that will please staunch fans and inquisitive newcomers alike, the self explanatory Bourbonese Qualk 1983-1987 focuses on the Southport band's highly productive mid '80s period with some 26 tracks to digest across the two slabs of vinyl. If you are not familiar with the band's music what becomes most striking listening to this collection is how much of a clear influence they've had on later music developments with the makings of techno quite apparent in some places. A real grubby delight to get lost in, this one.

Review: Donato Dozzy has long been one of techno's most inventive and singularly minded talents. Even so, this latest full-length - his first since 2013 - is pretty conceptual. There's something more than a little Matthew Herbert-esque about Dozzy's desire to create an entire album out of the near operatic vocals of Rome-based singer Anna Caragnano. Using nothing but her voice - harmonies, solos, grunts, whispers, speech and dreamy freestyle passages - and a swathe of sound effects, Dozzy creates a rich, evocative, often spine-tingling range of largely ambient, otherworldly tracks. There are occasional rhythmic passages, of course - see "Festa (A Mattola)" in particular - but for the most part the Italian producer concentrates on textures and atmospheres. The results are rarely less than beguiling.

Aromobates NDB (8:17)
Clelia Clelia (8:31)
Review: Provocative performance artists NDB are best famed for their insanity-inspiring live shows and uncompromising, experimental sounds on labels such as Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions. Now the Italians make the leap to the mighty DFA with two very contrasting productions; the title track is a pneumatic, droning, exercise in cyclical shamanism, developing and mutating with distorted mischief throughout. "Clelia Clelia", meanwhile, is a straight-up Latin techno jam. Pacey, percussive and sweatier than a chubby fellow in a packed sauna, it's probably the most dancefloor minded track the duo have done to date. Unique.

Entropy Flash (12:44)
Entropy Symphony (15:49)
Review: The flurry of releases emanating from Planet Mu HQ in the label's 20th anniversary year continues apace with the arrival of a new record from veteran West Country tape mangler Ekoplekz. The two albums Nick Edwards issued through Planet Mu last year represented some of his most concentrated work as Ekoplekz, but he seems in playful mood on this Entropik 12" which features a pair of ten minutes-plus productions that pay their dues to Joey Beltram and "a certain late-eighties psychedelic drone-rock group" respectively. Due to their stated lengths, the soundclips don't really do this record justice but you should get an idea of the enveloping sound Edwards has achieved. "Entropy Flash" is quite beautiful!

Review: Also known as techno producer Obtane, Francesco Baudazzi has been raking up the audio muck of his studio as Violet Poison for a good few years now, with albums gracing Hospital Productions and Opal Tapes amongst others. This latest release marks the beginning of Veleno Viola, a label presumably focused on supporting the ominous noise work that Baudazzi puts his creative energy into these days. His is a dense, overwhelming sound that prizes industrial blasts and heavy wads of distortion, with the odd dash of sinister vocals lurking somewhere in between the cloying layers of noise. For all of that sonic antagonism, there is a human heart beating away underneath the rubble and it makes for a compelling listen.

Review: Along with the likes of Maurizio Bianchi (who stands as the undisputed father of Italian industrial music and power electronics), Daniele Ciullini's brand of industrial synthpop was truly influential at the time of release way back in the early eighties. The man only released a number of cassettes and records before plunging into darkness, so the lovely Ecstatic label have put his work together into something of an anthology! Tracks like "Marbles In the Garden", a drum machine-led banger with minimal melodic work, still sound as fresh as ever today - not to mention the very Detroitian "Naked & White" - and it is imperative that any fan of electronic music comes across this release, at least. If you're into anything on Hospital, if you like Vatican Shadow or Raime, and if you vibe to noisy techno sounds then you've hit the source. Recommended.

Review: Paul Dickow aka Strategy hails from Portland, Oregon but his heart is firmly placed in the kind of dubby, gutter-friendly experimental music that's been coming out of Bristol for the last twenty years. In fact, the city's bass specialist shop Idle Hands has decided to put out his latest full-length after releasing an EP of his last year. The man has also been dishing out his sounds via his own Community Library imprint and has even appeared on the shadowy Zam Zam label. Seeds Of Paradise is an LP without any concrete form or genre and yet the eight tracks all share a mutual aesthetic, one that's dripping with mysticism and a tropical sort of vibe. Tracks like "Virtual America" or "Wiggle Room" way from side to side thanks to broken slices of percussion, glitchy shreds of field recordings and a hard form of ambience. Killer stuff, seriously.

Review: We've been waiting for this beauty to arrive since we first heard the news of its vinyl reissue through The Death Of Rave. Theo Burt's Summer Mix is possibly one of the most original and daring electronic LP's of the last five years. Using something called a Fourier transform, Burt mutated commercial dance hits into minimal, tripping and subby 4/4 sketches. We've been told this works by stripping 50% of the content and remoulding it by placing similar tones next to each other. Music by the likes of Deadmau5, Paul Van Dyk, Eric Prydz and even Swedish House Mafia is all in there but torn apart and sculpted into something more similar to the Chain Reaction output thanks to the long flurries of delay. This is a special album for the special kind of ear. Moreover, it's what the underground represents: musical freedom and total experimentation.

Tund (Ricardo Villalobos remix) (10:43)
Toxic Underground (Tobias remix) (8:05)
Review: For some of the more surreal, free and improvisation electro-acoustic jazz kicking about these days check out Claudio Puntin, Samuel Rohrer and Max Loderbauer's Ambiq LP. That 11-track album fused interstellar themes associable with the music of Sun Ra with left of field sounds you'd expect to hear on a label like Type. Arjunamusic founder Samuel Rohrer has suitably commissioned remixes by minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos and Ostgut Ton pillar Tobias, and both provide distinctly different and, to say the least, fascinating results. Villalobos's scatter-junk remix of "Tund" is enough to make you feel as though you're stuck in a tiny crawl space of dirt, driftwood and broken wind chimes, while Tobias's trademark techno percussion lightly rests below the humming bassline, cinematic atmospheres and shuffling field recordings of "Toxic Underground". House and techno and its most avant garde.
