Run Away
Somethin Heavy
Review: Does drum and bass get any better than this? Two of the finest names in the genre club together for "Run Away", met in the middle by the man like Fox who puts his vocal stylings into the mix. Rolling out smooth, it's that lulling bassline and softly-spoken chorus that takes the edge off punchy drums and signature Intalex-style strings from the pad section. Fans have been waiting for a release on this for some time now - finally, it's ownable. Showing that they can still deliver tastier goods for the dancefloor, "Something Heavy" is a funk-fuelled hips-mover with Fox sending out his raggamuffin sounds over down and dirty bass. You've heard it in the dance, now get it on repeat.

Foreign Concept - "Make Meals"
Foreign Concept - "When You're Alone"
Foreign Concept - "Endless Fade" (feat Naomi Olive)
Foreign Concept & Klax - "Ask Yourself"
Review: Easily Foreign Concept's biggest - and most anticipated - release to date, early versions and dubs have been spotted in mixes from Kasra and Stray for well over six months. Covering all the most exciting areas of D&B, each track tells its own story... "Make Meals" is a low-riding, sleazy hip-hop jam, "When You're Alone" is a startling ice cannon of a track, "Endless Fade" is a rich, string-drenched soulful roller while his collab with dubster Klax takes us deep into slippery, funky, spacey Exit territory. Tuck in, this meal is beyond tasty!

International
Dimension (remix)
Review: One of the many highlights of their Brand New Machine album, "International" sees Chase & Status embracing their badboy roots with modern trappist motifs. Complete with sugar-sweet skanks and a cleverly diced Cutty Ranks sample, it can smash every dance in a 20 mile radius. Dimension's remix builds on the momentum with a slamming D&B version. Retaining the original elements while taking it deep into 2014 jungle territory, it justifies Dimensions hype in every possible direction. Massive.

Drop The Bass
Review: In case a massive 12" on Dispatch last month wasn't quite enough, Dutch dynamo Nymfo now flexes over to Klute's Commercial Suicide with a trio of incredible floor-firers. A dense, heavily-textured blunderbuss, "Electrosmog" lives up to its name with overwhelming pressure. It's followed by "Cymatic Frequencies", a naked stepper with pneumatic beats and a guttural bass drone that's countered perfectly by rushed-out breathy synths. Finally we hit "Drop The Bass" which is basically a killer homage to Andy C & Shimon's "Nighflight". Yeah... it's that good! Limited and red, Commercial Suicide have delivered something very special here!

Ahead Of It All (with Jaybee & Adrienne Richards)
When The Daylight Comes
Review: Back in 2001, seminal D&B figure DJ Marky released a two-track 12" called the Brazilian Job which paired full on Latin vibes (think vocals, guitars and flair) with liquid drum and bass rhythms. Almost 15 years on and Random Movement proves there is plenty more mileage in this approach with the blissfully summery vibes of Ahead of it All for V Recordings. Admittedly, Random Movement does get a little dirtier through a wobbly bassline in "Ahead Of It All" while the alternative option, "When The Daylight Comes", is darker and rolling with some subtle jungle and tribal elements, and the slightest of tear-out moments.

Tape Pack
Muted (feat James Sunderland)
Review: Metalheadz South Coast correspondents Ulterior Motive are gearing up to unleash their debut LP The Fourth Wall, and it's about time too! Despite being only two tracks deep, this sampler does well to show the forthcoming album's broadest range and will whet appetites for The Fourth Wall. "Tape Pak" is an instant love letter to the early 90s rave foundations, but written by pen and paper from 2039. "Muted", meanwhile, is wholly contemporary with its deep spacious groove, techno-like attitude and dBridge-style vocals from James Sutherland. Two sides, twelve inches, one very exciting album to follow....

Right Back (original mix)
Right Back (Break remix)
Review: Long running Bristol crew Dr Meaker surface on V Recordings with a vinyl issue of "Right Back", the fans favourite which features the distinctive tones of Sian Evans. Initially released digitally through Circus last month and backed with a slew of remixes, it's nice to see the good Doctor right back on the vinyl format and on V, with Break's excellent remix also making the cut. In the Beatmaker legend's hands, "Right Back" is truly transformed with Break cutting into the drop in a stunningly stark way, weaving dark drums magic the only way he can.

Enterprise
Prozac
Review: Krakow-based newcomer Trilo makes his full Renegade Hardware debut with this darkly atmospheric double drop, after first appearing on the Compound One digital compilation the label issued earlier this year. Fans of Peter Barta's contribution to that split release will no doubt love the two fresh Trilo productions that are spread across this 12". From the off there is a devilish science at play by Trilo, with "Enterprise" a particularly dynamic production where punchy basslines and crisp drums are twisted in new directions. "Prozac" is initially a more subdued affair, with the abstract atmospherics of it's opening bars a ruse to draw you in before Trilo unleashes a fearsome combo of neurofunk basslines and razor sharp drums.

Speculate
Autumn
Dark Venture
Review: Active since 2012, the METHXX series from Metalheadz seems to have gathered a real sense of momentum over the summer after drops from Mako, SB81 and Beta 2. The onslaught continues here with the METHXX debut of Friske, no stranger to the Metalheadz cause and this triplet really shows off his diverse production palette. Lead track "Speculate" fills out the A Side and demonstrates Friske's talent for rugged productions filled with intricate edits which still retain a certain chilling quality (in this case it's those haunting strings). There's a degree of liquid funk to "Autumn" as well as a usage of loops that suggests why Metalheadz call Friske their in-house hip-hop aficionado, whilst "Dark Venture" is pure 170bpm rufige.

Miracles
Review: An immaculate lesson in deepness from Fokuz mainstay Intelligent Manners: across four tracks the Russian talent excels in every direction. Opener "Numb" rolls out with a warm filtered pads that warp and weave with real subtlety, "Love Is Love" is all about the dark art of the sample and comes across like an early High Contrast cut, sultry vocal stepper "Everyday Is The Same" is the soundtrack to your next steamy session while the title track tracks a Rose Royce classic and flips the vibe entirely. Miracles do happen... You just need to Fokuz.

SOS
Control
Review: Long running UK DnB outpost Ingredients maintains the schedule of Indian summer pressure with their second 12" drop in as many months and the welcome return of DJ Response. Manchester based Nick Owen has caused quite a stir since Nick Ingredients scooped him up for a series of 12"s last year, and the Desperate Planet / Hope drop issued earlier this year demonstrated how the Response sound was developing. The two track SOS finds Response in fine fettle with the title cut dominated by the huge hi tech jazz cinematic build he's crafted and the impact of the drop into a bucking procession of kicks - the bassline on this one is like a laser beam! It's complemented well by "Control" which shows off Owen's knack for musicality and is very much the b side to the humongous A Side business that is "SOS".

Here I Come
Ganja Smuggling
Review: Ed Solo is broader than Broadway: a fact so well-known in the jungle fraternity, to mutter such a statement is akin to telling someone water is wet. Just in case you need reminding, here he takes the Barrington Levy classic and flips it into a super-skanked jungle jam that will guarantee rewinds on every single drop. Flip for further reload justice as Ed applies his technique to Eek-A-Mouse. The most distinctive voice reggae has ever given us, Mouse's nasal tones are the consummate fit to Solo's sonic stylings. Large, even by jungle cakes standards.

Prototype
El Sol
Review: Relative newcomer Vromm emerges from the fuggy bass mists, and does so on the perfect platform... 31's remit and motifs fit the London-Italian's stripped-back, techno-influenced dynamics like a well-tailored suit. Both of these entry cuts smoulder with groove magic and low end majesty; the obese rolls of "Prototype" ricochet with hypnotic slipperiness and great detail while "El Sol" is much more of a space trip thank to its abyss-level space, carnal drums and dubbed flurries. A winning mission statement.

Yin Dub
Review: Far out flavours from Finland as the prolific Fanu returns with two impeccable slabs of futuristic drum and bass issued through his own Lightless imprint. Lead track "Paracosm" lives up to its name, revealing widescreen visions of the most sonically detailed dystopia where drama is the lingua franca and battle seems to loom ever closer. "Yin Dub", meanwhile, surges with an emotional prayer call, gritty subs and layers of rhythmic instrumentation that offer something new on every listen. Dynamically dark.

Human Again
Slipstream
Review: Ahead of his highly anticipated debut album Metrik drops two more stunning dancefloor gems... "Human Again" is the soundtrack to the triumphant peak of all the best stories. Post-montage, post-battle, this is the ultimate cinematic victory track. Looking for something a little heavier and more manic? Look no further than "Slipstream", a loopy sonic shuttle that bounces with ridiculous levels of insanity, fans of Sub Focus's early work will be all over this in a jiffy. Bring on the album!

State Of Mind - "Long Term Effect"
Soligen & Type 2 - "Biology"
Review: Blimey! State Of Mind have been known for the heavy side explorations but "Long Term Effect" is another level; sheet metal bass, industrial strength percussion and a rolling sense of savageness that simply won't quit, it's the duo at their angriest! Meanwhile on the flip we hit Soligen & Type 2's "Biology". A muscular MC-led roller peppered with myriad bass textures, great percussive techniques, it boasts depths within the groove while remaining resolutely floor-focussed. One of those rare tracks that will sing to all sub-genres.

Cherelle - "Saturday" (with Alexander O'Neal)
Review: Drum and bass legend turned TV personality Goldie is the latest DJ to take Ministry of Sound's Masterpiece test, following in the footsteps of Andrew Weatherall and Francois K. The fact this vinyl edition of the compilation only features a smattering of the tracks from the full triple CD version should not be a surprise (try cramming 50 tracks on three slabs of vinyl!) Despite this, Ministry Of Sound have done a fine job in conveying the full breadth of styles covered by Clifford Joseph Price, commencing with the wonderful [rejazz] cover of Goldie's timeless "Inner City Life" and veering through the warped early jungle of Internal Affairs and Nookie, '90s hardcore of Dragon Fly, the soothing roots skank of Ken Boothe and the classic Cherelle and Alexander O'Neal jam "Saturday".

Tiamat
What We Bring Upon Ourselves
Conway
Review: The working relationship between Cern and Dispatch Recordings is already very strong thanks to a series of 12" releases from Ollie Macky's project on the label over the past five years so it makes perfect sense that a second long player from him is due in the coming months. Whilst a three track sampler is never going to offer a conclusive insight into how Under Another Sky might sound, it will undoubtedly whet the appetites of Cern fans everywhere! "Tiamat" is nothing but a marauding opener, rich with that vicious sense of sound design and finely crafted rhythm that the Cern approach has become synonymous with, whilst the delicate strings and atmospherics of "What We Bring Upon Ourselves" suggest the upcoming album wont be packed full with dancefloor monsters. "Conway" closes proceedings and feels like the ghost of "Inner City Life" trapped and tormented deep within a rhythmic mainframe that is equal parts abstract and vicious.

Review: Med School's New Blood series has always executed a simple idea brilliantly. Its concept may be basic - gathering together material from new, up-and-coming and soon-to-breakthrough producers - but the resultant compilations are rarely less than essential. This fourth annual installment is every bit as exciting and enjoyable as its predecessors, and variously touches on string-laden downtempo grooves (Donevan Adams), intoxicating deep dubstep (Hidden Element), dBridge style experimental D&B (Ashjerona), broken beat (Krux) and, of course, plenty of dancefloor drum and bass. It's a testament to Med School's A&R department that there's nary a duffer in sight, and plenty of names we'll no doubt be seeing more of in coming years.
