Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

Review: It's a busy month for Detroit veteran Brian 'Javonntte' Garrett, who has a new EP on The Jazz Dairies as well as this new 12" on Ten Lovers Landing simultaneously. He's an artist who cut his teeth playing on tour with Aretha Franklin so is the real deal. Jazz, house, broken beat, Latin rhythms and plenty more all feature in his work. Review: 'I'll See You Again' delivered a triumphant conclusion to Deborah Jordan's 2020 album See In The Dark, a set that DJ Spinna described as, "an instant classic". Here it gets a deserved single release, albeit in remixed form. The A-side boasts a stunning Extended Mix that's the definition of slow-burn delight, with lengthy beat-free opening and closing sections sandwiching the main body of the heavily orchestrated song. It's a genuinely stunning version. Marc Rapson takes over on the flip, first offering up a chunky, deep, trip-hop style 'Rework', before delivering a looser, warmer hip-hop soul style 'Remix' that makes great use of a squelchy bassline and rich Rhodes keys.

But Josh One does it justice here as he serve sup the first single and title track off his forthcoming EP. Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

It was the band's third album released back in May 2003 on Ninja Tune with all songs produced by Jorgen Traeen as well as plenty of musicians playing saxophone, flute, clarinet, acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and viola amongst much more, which means it is a texturally, melodically rich album with plenty of soaring highs and emotional themes that ebb and flow in captivating fashion. The sounds are best described as spiritual jazz, or as Madlib calls it 'Black classical music', and are steeped in history while also offering up a vision of the future. Review: American composer Harry James hails from the southside of Chicago and is known for self-recording acoustic piano and percussion using analogue tools and techniques. His latest long player Off The Record is another one made on Tascam 4 Track and is full of warmth and familiar feelings. To adopt the football parlance, the band's digging duties score goal after goal after goal; the smoky Simoneisms of Ary Lobo, the heavenly vibraphonics of Skymark, the slippery time signature and almost cosmic bossa of Lucas Santana, the raw jazz soul of Nathan Haines, the list goes on. Review: Anthony Joseph's roots run deep in the Caribbean, and the Trinidad native's singular spoken word style is full of colour and energy, just like the islands he hails from. All the music on Caribbean Roots is essentially a form of funked-out free jazz, but the vocals on the likes of "The Kora" are as powerful and evocative as the music itself. But the madness doesn't end there by any stretch of the imagination - the Miles Davis like speed of "Drum Song" is like a call to the Gods, "Slinger" is a fast-paced afrofunk shuffle, and others like "Our History" offer a more soulful edge to this wonderfully contained pandemonium. He chose Jeremiah Chu and Marta Sofia Honer. Following the radio broadcast in the autumn of '22, the trio continued making music together and this is the result: a brilliant, impossible-to-pigeonhole affair that combines snatches of improvised performances from each musician with elements of recordings Kalma made in the 1970s, speech samples, droning tones, ambient electronics and much more besides. It's not jazz, ambient, fourth world or abstract electronica, but something that sits in the fuzzy gaps in between. More importantly, it's sonically superb - a coherent and inspired piece of work that gets the most out of its principle cast of characters.
