KonKoma Remixed (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: SNDW 12017. Rel: 28 Nov 12
  1. Sibashaya Woza (Chico Mann remix)
  2. Hankerchief (Auntie Flo remix)
  3. Kpanlogo (Debruit remix)
Review: Here we see London Afro-Funk outfit Konkoma remixed within an inch of their lives by a selection of producers. "Sibashaya Woza" is turned into a rolling filtered-house gem, "Kpanlogo" is a remarkable Afro-meets-bontempi- house excursion at the hands of Debruit but it's Aunte Flo's awesome sleazy house (with hints of classic Minneapolis funk) mix that's the ultimate winner.

  3. David Tapfuma - "Magamba" (4:32)
  4. David Tapfuma - "Magamba" (Esa Zimtronix Direct mix) (5:19)
Review: This compilation style outing from Southern African music enthusiasts Nyami Nyami is billed as "an ode to the music of Zimbabwe past and future". Side A boasts cuts from two Bulawayo-based "Kwela" outfits: a terrific, heavily percussive future dub interpretation of Bulawayo Kwela's "Mysterious Africa" by The Comet Is Coming producer Danalogue, and the sparse, sun-kissed acoustic bliss of Elliot Phiri's "Nomalanga". Turn to the flip for two versions of Hararre-based David Tapfuma's beautiful "Magumba". There's the original version, where Tapfuma sings over a solo mbira melody, and a superbly glassy-eyed, synth-heavy 21st century club version by Auntie Flo collaborator (and hugely talented producer) Esa Williams. As good as the rest of the EP is, his version is worth the admission price on its own.

Towards Fullfilment (7" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: BMM 025. Rel: 30 May 17
  1. Breezin' (feat Magic Malik) (5:25)
  2. Landing (feat Magic Malik) (3:05)
Review: Le Recette cooked up a delicious five dish feast earlier this year in the form of their "Towards Fulfilment" EP... And here are two sweet tasters on a limited 45 platter. Both cuts featuring Magic Malik, it's a broad tour across a very short amount of time: "Breezin" studied at the school of both Stevie Wonder and Amp Fiddler. Sleazy, jazzy soul in its silkiest form. "Landing" takes a more abstract twist on ballad craft as the vocals almost melt over the lolloping beats and hazy flutes. Precision timed for the summer...

Review: After her magnetic debut EP for Running Circle in 2017, Nottingham's Yazmin Lacey lands on our charts with her follow-up 12", a piece of work that sounds deeply accomplished and expansive for being her second EP to date. Largely roaming within the jazzo-sphere, When The Sun Dips 90 Degress is a beautifully seductive five-tracker, with the artist's voice reigning supreme over the cascading showers of piano keys and subtle electronics, somehow tapping into the Alice Coltrane sort of vibe. There's no harp here, but plenty of soulful charisma. Fear not thy devout jazz fanatic - this can get real deep and real smooth. It's a broken beat fan's dream some true. More from Lacey is, indeed, expected in the remainder of the year. Marvellous stuff.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

  3. Understand What Black Is (Dego & Kaidi remix) (3:56)
  4. Understand What Black Is (Dego & Kaidi instrumental mix) (3:58)
Review: Anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of hip-hop history will tell you that the roots of rapping can be traced back to the early '70s spoken word albums of The Last Poets. It's because of this that the collective's recent album, Understand What Black Is (their first for nearly two decades), was such a big deal. Here the title track is given the remix treatment. Mala handles the A-side, delivering vocal and instrumental passes that re-cast the track as a skanking, dub-wise excursion full of ricocheting electric piano notes and suitably heavy bass. 2000 Black main men Dego and Kaidi Tatham take a more up-tempo approach on the flip, wrapping the Poets conscious vocals and instrumentation around their own fizzing broken beat rhythms, jazz-funk chords and darting electronics.

  2. Escape Through Time (7:26)
  3. Higher! (Byron The Aquarius remix) (6:13)
  4. Spirit Of Harmony (6:22)
Review: The productions of City Fly co-founder Ashley "Arthur Jr" Stevenson just seem to get better and better. "Higher!" marks his return to the Leicester-based label following outings on Better Listen and Kolour Ltd, and is unquestionably his strongest EP to date. The title track, featuring the sugary-sweet vocals of Erik Rico, is particularly good, boasting a near perfect balance between rolling electronic grooves, dusty samples and luscious soul-jazz instrumentation. There are plenty of highlights elsewhere across the EP, too, from the loopy, sample-house goodness of "Escape Through Time", to the smooth, jazz-flecked deep house breeze that is closer "Spirit of Harmony". Arguably best of all, though, is the deep, jazz-funk flecked revision of "Higher!" by fast-rising star Byron The Aquarius that opens side B of an essential EP.

  4. 1929
Review: Following the summer-sizzled "LOVE Song" comes another smooth soul schooling from Victor Lavender. Smoking keys and a lolloping bassline set the scene as Diviniti's vocals cause a spell-binding ear roadblock to great effect. For something deeper and more percussive jump on ReelSoul's drum-heavy instrumental while Josh Milan Honeycomb extends the soul aspects and injects a tiny bit of jazz to recipe giving it a confident MAW-like polish. "1929" completes the set with more jazzed out leanings thanks to the dreamy keys and piano work, tied together neatly with a funky squidgy bassline and subtle percussion elements.

This time, however, the imprint is Local Talk, and they've decided to release the "Tiptoe" single onto glorious 7", a format which is perfect to showcase its slow, meandering waves and delightfully seductive vocals; there's a DJ Spinna remix, on top of Lawrence's magnificent single, with the experienced producer coming through smooth and effective thanks to some elegant beat-work and plenty of soulful vibes. 4. Waiting (Rim Laurens remix) (4:58)
Review: Last April may seem like an aeon ago but Llorca's album The Garden has barely left our turntable... until now, as a selection of dope remixes have landed. The forever-delicious disco cut "Waiting" enjoys three twists: Cuthead rips up the dance with Robsoul-style chugger, Souleance dust of the cowbell and add a little more cosmic sparkle while Rim Laurens adds a whole new dramatic dynamic in a way that's not dissimilar to "La Ritornelle" or "Clubbed To Death". Finally S3A takes the come-to-bed poignancy of "All Right" and gives it a little 4/4 pep and loopy insistency. Blooming lovely.

  1. Soul 70 (Gerardo Frisina live rework)

Review: Schema regular Gerardo Frisina has dug deep for the A-side of this very special 7". Taking the Booker T dreaminess and Hammond flourishes of The Lola's super-rare "Soul 70", he's beefed up the percussion and added an array of richly textured dubbiness with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Colours". An original by Gerardo, it's the ideal foil to the somnambulant sonics of the title track; stomping with northern soul glee, it's a spellbinding fusion of flutes, heavy percussion and wily organ stabs. Schema seldom disappoint, and Gerardo is the reason why.

  4. When You Get It (2:36)
Review: UK dance legend, Dego, is back on his own 2000black imprint, stomping and storming through the place with nothing but ethereal house vibes. He's got Lord with him this time, a newcomer onto the block, and it's clear that the duo has some chemistry running real deep - "One Way To The Other" chugs along to a jazzy note, made more danceable by a heavy bassline, while the flip kicks off with "Oh It's You Again", a dusty house nugget with the sort of percussion that recalls the early 90s Detroit era; "The Island" is a continuation of that, this time dubbier and more beat-centric, and "When You Get It" further develops the groove with a gentle, melodic string of jazzed-out notes. All killer - no filler!

Review: Since Dego and Lordamercy (AKA former Bugz In The Attic and Hoomecookin' member Matt Lord) are old pals, it's little surprise to find them joining forces for a tasty 12" on 2000 Black. They begin with the samba-soaked summer sunshine of "Green Woods", where Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synth lines and rich boogie bass ride a shuffling, Brazilian style groove. Speaking of boogie, the duo pay a heartfelt tribute to the early '80s style on "What Does It Take To Come In First", which is built around Herbie Hancock style keys and a righteous slap bass workout. The slightly more broken but no less "live" sounding "Can't Remember But I Know" completes a superb EP.

  2. Wenzenwoznow
Review: Tim Love Lee's Peace Feast Industries label seems to be enjoying something of a creative rebirth of late; active since 1994, it was lifted out of decade long dormancy last year with that Sotofett collaboration the obvious highlight. Early presses of Standard Jazz saw the light of day very late in 2014, and now it's been granted an official release and both cuts offer a reminder of the Love man's rich versatility and magical sense of musicianship. "Standard Jazz" is a stark exercise in euphoria; soaring synths, tightly weaved percussion and meandering counter leads flickering in an out of the narrative over nearly 12 minutes. "Wenzenwoznow", meanwhile, is a dense slice of loopy ambient music that's so strong, shimmery and positive it's almost festive.

Review: Surely one of the most fitting albums of the summer, Sabrina Malheiros's fifth LP Clareia undergoes some stately remix treatment as we move from open fields to sweaty clubs to party for the rest of the year. Three of broken beat's finest and most respected protagonists all play a role... Man of the moment Henry Wu gets woozy on the organs and widens the whole jam out into seven minutes of space funk, Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black dig deep into the bossa dynamic with a Latin jazzy spiritual feel running throughout the momentum while CoOp founder IG Culture adds a little skip to the drums, dreamy plucks and bassline that won't stop bouncing. If it's bruk, don't try and fix it.

Review: Listen again to Martin "Atjazz" Iveson's early noughties output and you'll find many rhythmic nods to the then popular West London broken beat scene. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the latest single on the Derby producer's label - a debut from the previously unheralded Marc and Oveous - pays tribute to that sound. While effortlessly deep and soulful (think woozy chords, soulful vocals and Iveson style jazz-funk synth flourishes), the track's most distinctive feature is its' Seiji-esque rhythm track. On the flipside the duo delivers contrasting instrumental takes - a bruk-up "Dubstramental", and a chunky "4/4 Dub" to slip effortlessly in to deep house sets.

Review: Not a lot is known about this Berlin-based project right now, besides rumours of a full album of originals later on this year. For now we have two awesome bootleg/edits... "My Wild Love" gives The Doors a smoky, mid 90s rolling D&B twist they've always deserved while "Twisted" takes Wayne G's heavily sexual spoken word hard house anthem from 1997 a Latin twist that no one could ever have predicted... And is about a trillion time better than the original. We need more of this.

Review: After four volumes of smoking hot disco house business from El Nino, Jackie Brown turn their attention to debutant producer MB22, who understands the party-starting manifesto of the label intrinsically. "Shocked" kicks the record off in a flurry of heated chops and licks, all driven by a nagging hat, and then "Run Sally Run" switches stance to a winsome 80s tinged electro jam, tape-hiss included. "Slick Maneuver" takes things into smooth, boogie-indebted territory and then "Perfection Valley" rounds the record off with the kind of dusty electro funk that Moon B made his name with.

Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

"Oldest Friend" is an airy, dreamlike track laden with upper register chords, tones and FX pinging around in a reverie of deep house delight, while "Questions" gets locked into a loose, swinging groove with some mysterious pads swirling around the middle distance for added atmosphere. "Some Day" is a more rugged affair that bumps and wriggles in all the right places, while "Eleven Days" explores broken beat territory without losing the hazy atmosphere that permeates the EP.

This second "Set" explores similar sonic territory to its predecessor, with the duo delivering jaunty, semi-improvised cuts that mix Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk synthesizer work and sparkling, Dam Funk style sounds with beats and basslines that variously draw inspiration from dusty, sample-rich deep house, L.A experimental hip-hop, dub, broken beat (the ace "Croydon Rooftop Cafe Culture") and intergalactic space jazz (starburst closer "Thorns"). It takes a few listens to really get to grips with all of the duo's musical intricacies, but it's definitely worth the effort.

Review: For the fourth volume in Mukatsuku's ongoing Jazz Classics series, label boss Nik Weston has decided to reissue two lesser-known gems from the nu-jazz era. On side A you'll find Kirk Degiorgio in As One mode, laying down a sublime chunk of sultry jazz bliss that comes laden with virtuoso horn playing and some superb keys-work from then session player Jamie Odell (AKA Jimpster). It was recorded almost 20 years ago, but sounds timeless. Equally as impressive is Butti 49's "Spiritual Radiations", a bright-and-breezy, soul-flecked chunk of jazz positivity that sounds like Rotary Connection jamming with Kyoto Jazz Massive.Juno copies come with an exclusive hand-numbered obi strip not available at other stores plus branded sleeve & sticker.DJ support so far from Spiritland,Faze Action,Nicola Conte, Kalita Records Chris,Nick Emanative,Simon S,Steven Tang and Kay Suzuki

Flying Fantasy (7" in Juno exclusive hand-stamped kraft paper inner sleeve + branded card outer sleeve + sticker)
Cat: MUKAT 059. Rel: 01 Oct 18
  1. Flying Fantasy (exclusive instrumental version) (4:35)
  2. Rhodes E Serenidade (3:37)
Review: On this latest tasty Mukatsuku seven-inch, label boss Nik Weston has raided the back catalogue of Modern Sun Records founder and experienced jazz-wise producer Marc Friedli AKA Skymark. A-side "Flying Fantasy" originally appeared on the Spanish producer's 2016 album "Resistance Sonore", but is here featured in instrumental form for the first time. If anything, it's better than the original version, largely because we get to revel in Friedli's mazy Fender Rhodes solos, rubbery jazz-funk synth bass and loose-limbed, West London style broken beats. You'll find plenty more jaunty jazz-funk vibes and liquid electric piano solos on B-side cut "Rhodes E Serenidade", which first slipped out way back in 2015. Review: Following hot on the heels of label boss Tenderlonious's mini album, London's 22a introduces us to a new extended family member, Neue Grafik. Located in Paris, Neue Grafik represents a generation of artists at the forefront of electronic music. Routing his influences in a heavy 70s feel, his latest EP 'Soul Conspiracy' invites the listener to explore a fusion of live and programmed electronic music. Grafik makes good use of live instrumentation on this EP, featuring plenty of Fender Rhodes and lead synth, as well as a sprinkling of live drums and a strong guest vocal from the soulful likes of Wayne Snow. Tunes like 'Modern Man' and 'Thanos Interlude' adopt an inspired broken beat approach, reminiscent of early Bugz productions, whilst the title track 'Soul Conspiracy' has a distinct 22a quality, fusing classic house beats with a lo-fi boogie feel.

Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

  4. Alkoan Kulu Bidoor (iZem remix) (5:57)
Review: Both Nickodemus and the Wonderwheel imprint are from NYC, and both parties know how to lay down some pure, hypnotic goodness when it comes to house. This time, the former is joined by Alsarah, who provides the mystical, charming Eastern vocals over the deep, progressive beats of "The Crow", a vibrant house tune for the big room; Saangan does his best to inject a little more techno sensibility into the tune. On the flip, "Alkoan Kulu Bidoor" heads into broken beat territories with its slower, sloppier beats, once again guided by Alsarah's arabic spoken word, and iZem provides the 'umph' by layering a rolling, glitchy blend of percussion into the mix. Solid.

  4. The Nervous Track (UN mix) (6:29)
Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.
