  3. All Right (S3A remix) (7:29)
  4. Waiting (Rim Laurens remix) (4:58)
Review: Last April may seem like an aeon ago but Llorca's album The Garden has barely left our turntable... until now, as a selection of dope remixes have landed. The forever-delicious disco cut "Waiting" enjoys three twists: Cuthead rips up the dance with Robsoul-style chugger, Souleance dust of the cowbell and add a little more cosmic sparkle while Rim Laurens adds a whole new dramatic dynamic in a way that's not dissimilar to "La Ritornelle" or "Clubbed To Death". Finally S3A takes the come-to-bed poignancy of "All Right" and gives it a little 4/4 pep and loopy insistency. Blooming lovely.

Soul 70 (7")
Cat: SC 706. Rel: 12 Sep 13
  1. Soul 70 (Gerardo Frisina live rework)
  2. Colours
Review: Schema regular Gerardo Frisina has dug deep for the A-side of this very special 7". Taking the Booker T dreaminess and Hammond flourishes of The Lola's super-rare "Soul 70", he's beefed up the percussion and added an array of richly textured dubbiness with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Colours". An original by Gerardo, it's the ideal foil to the somnambulant sonics of the title track; stomping with northern soul glee, it's a spellbinding fusion of flutes, heavy percussion and wily organ stabs. Schema seldom disappoint, and Gerardo is the reason why.

Review: Currently celebrating the 10th anniversary of her debut album, Brazilian nu-bossa frontrunner Sabrina enjoys a clutch of versions from Ashely Beadle. Channelling his Afrikanz On Mars spirit, he gives her the disco treatment she deserves with lavish percussion, sweeping synths and a sleazy but slinky bassline. Complete with a Galactic Flute remix and an instrumental, Far Out have created a winning package to match their previous Theo Parrish outing earlier this year.

  3. Clareia (IG Culture remix) (6:30)
Review: Surely one of the most fitting albums of the summer, Sabrina Malheiros's fifth LP Clareia undergoes some stately remix treatment as we move from open fields to sweaty clubs to party for the rest of the year. Three of broken beat's finest and most respected protagonists all play a role... Man of the moment Henry Wu gets woozy on the organs and widens the whole jam out into seven minutes of space funk, Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black dig deep into the bossa dynamic with a Latin jazzy spiritual feel running throughout the momentum while CoOp founder IG Culture adds a little skip to the drums, dreamy plucks and bassline that won't stop bouncing. If it's bruk, don't try and fix it.

  1. Love Is War For Miles (8:46)
  2. 7 Bar Thing (9:52)
Review: Back in 2016, percussionist Myele Manzanza impressed with a killer live album - recorded at famed Los Angeles jazz spot Blue Whale - on DJ Gilla's First Word Records. Almost three years on he returns to the spotlight via a surprise release on Theo Parrish's lauded Sound Signature imprint. Like its predecessor, it sounds like both tracks on "Love Is War For Miles" were recorded live. The A-side title track sets the tone, with pulsing, increasingly intense drums and piano working their magic around an unrelenting, two-note bassline. Flipside "7 Bar Thing" is a little more relaxed in feel, but no less percussive, as Manzanza showcases his drumming versatility on a cut rich in funk-fuelled double bass and swelling, decidedly intergalactic synths.

  1. On Again (5:52)
  2. On Again (4/4 dub) (5:05)
  3. On Again (Dubstramental) (6:07)
Review: Listen again to Martin "Atjazz" Iveson's early noughties output and you'll find many rhythmic nods to the then popular West London broken beat scene. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the latest single on the Derby producer's label - a debut from the previously unheralded Marc and Oveous - pays tribute to that sound. While effortlessly deep and soulful (think woozy chords, soulful vocals and Iveson style jazz-funk synth flourishes), the track's most distinctive feature is its' Seiji-esque rhythm track. On the flipside the duo delivers contrasting instrumental takes - a bruk-up "Dubstramental", and a chunky "4/4 Dub" to slip effortlessly in to deep house sets.

  2. Let's Get Twisted (3:11)
Review: Not a lot is known about this Berlin-based project right now, besides rumours of a full album of originals later on this year. For now we have two awesome bootleg/edits... "My Wild Love" gives The Doors a smoky, mid 90s rolling D&B twist they've always deserved while "Twisted" takes Wayne G's heavily sexual spoken word hard house anthem from 1997 a Latin twist that no one could ever have predicted... And is about a trillion time better than the original. We need more of this.

Review: With "Frontin & My Adidas" Taggy Matcher returns with another soul/rap/reggae mash-up. This time round it's Pharell's "Frontin" acappella dropped over a deep dub beat - all the way to Kingston. On the flip side they feature a rocksteady version of a true hip-hop/electro classic! "My Adidas" is a great reworking of the RUN DMC tune, with a dub-like rhythm to it and a really classic sound overall. Stix present these two top-notch party pieces.

Review: After four volumes of smoking hot disco house business from El Nino, Jackie Brown turn their attention to debutant producer MB22, who understands the party-starting manifesto of the label intrinsically. "Shocked" kicks the record off in a flurry of heated chops and licks, all driven by a nagging hat, and then "Run Sally Run" switches stance to a winsome 80s tinged electro jam, tape-hiss included. "Slick Maneuver" takes things into smooth, boogie-indebted territory and then "Perfection Valley" rounds the record off with the kind of dusty electro funk that Moon B made his name with.

  1. Phase II (part 1) (4:53)
  2. Phase II (part 2) (6:33)
Review: Aussie audio explorers Mildlife made a big impression with their debut album, Phase, which earned copious amounts of praise from the likes of DJ magazine, Mojo, BBC Six Music and The Guardian. Buoyed by this unexpected success, they returned to the studio and recorded "Phase II" - an 11-minute journey split into two parts, here spread across both sides of a 7" single. A-side "Part 1" is a wonderfully languid affair, with the band adding spacey Moog solos and 1960s British spy movie guitars to a lolloping rhythm track that sits somewhere between soul and jazz-funk. The "Part II" flipside version is noticeably slower, groovier and more of a head-trip, with fluttering flute solos rising above the band's impeccable rhythm section and intoxicating aural textures.

  1. Bring Me Down (9:32)
  2. Bring Me Down (Theo Parrish translation) (9:35)
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

Review: After first appearing on the label back in 2016, Florence-based Italo house stalwarts Minimono return to Vibraphone with another selection of illustrious dancefloor gems for subtler moments in the dance. "Oldest Friend" is an airy, dreamlike track laden with upper register chords, tones and FX pinging around in a reverie of deep house delight, while "Questions" gets locked into a loose, swinging groove with some mysterious pads swirling around the middle distance for added atmosphere. "Some Day" is a more rugged affair that bumps and wriggles in all the right places, while "Eleven Days" explores broken beat territory without losing the hazy atmosphere that permeates the EP.

Review: Two years on from the release of Modifications: Set 1, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor join forces once more as Modified Man. This second "Set" explores similar sonic territory to its predecessor, with the duo delivering jaunty, semi-improvised cuts that mix Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk synthesizer work and sparkling, Dam Funk style sounds with beats and basslines that variously draw inspiration from dusty, sample-rich deep house, L.A experimental hip-hop, dub, broken beat (the ace "Croydon Rooftop Cafe Culture") and intergalactic space jazz (starburst closer "Thorns"). It takes a few listens to really get to grips with all of the duo's musical intricacies, but it's definitely worth the effort.

The genius of their collaborative releases is their ability to combine loose-limbed instrumental improvisations with dusty samples, cleverly manipulated beats and an acute sense of atmosphere. This third volume in the series rolls along in a similar way, flitting between skewed, straight-to-tape boogie-house ("Blame's On You Bruv"), solo-laden deep house dreaminess ("Glass Army"), intergalactic jazz-funk/broken beat fusion ("Here Me Calling"), smooth and loved-up grooves (the amusingly titled "Sergio Arpeggio") and becalmed, ultra-deep downtempo beats ("Love Rising From The Dark Abyss of Sorrow").

On side A you'll find Kirk Degiorgio in As One mode, laying down a sublime chunk of sultry jazz bliss that comes laden with virtuoso horn playing and some superb keys-work from then session player Jamie Odell (AKA Jimpster). A-side "Flying Fantasy" originally appeared on the Spanish producer's 2016 album "Resistance Sonore", but is here featured in instrumental form for the first time. Review: Former Bugz In The Attic crewmember Alex Phountzi first joined forces with fellow broken beat pioneer IG Culture four years ago. Together, they launched the NameBrandSound project with a tidy EP of bass-weight business on Ninja Tune's Technicolour offshoot. Here the experienced twosome return with their first - and presumably only - missive of 2018. A-side "Shrunken Heads" is something of a percussive, off-kilter dancefloor beast, as the duo re-imagines Talking Heads classic "Once In A Lifetime" as a rolling, bruk-up floor-filler. Over on side B, "Bebop" sees them pepper another swinging, house-influenced bruk-up rhythm with lashings of synth-sax and some suitably shimmering chords.

Review: Following hot on the heels of label boss Tenderlonious's mini album, London's 22a introduces us to a new extended family member, Neue Grafik. Located in Paris, Neue Grafik represents a generation of artists at the forefront of electronic music. Routing his influences in a heavy 70s feel, his latest EP 'Soul Conspiracy' invites the listener to explore a fusion of live and programmed electronic music. Grafik makes good use of live instrumentation on this EP, featuring plenty of Fender Rhodes and lead synth, as well as a sprinkling of live drums and a strong guest vocal from the soulful likes of Wayne Snow. Tunes like 'Modern Man' and 'Thanos Interlude' adopt an inspired broken beat approach, reminiscent of early Bugz productions, whilst the title track 'Soul Conspiracy' has a distinct 22a quality, fusing classic house beats with a lo-fi boogie feel.

Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

This three track sampler are tracks taken from his forthcoming album Moon People and proceedings commence with ''Under The Volcano'' a collaboration with latin electro outfit Naveganto which is based around a melancholic electronic groove with elements of Cumbian accordion in the mix for a late night excursion. ''Nights Of Balaur'' follows, sporting pulsating sub bass and Arabic sounding percussion, whilst LA based DJ and producer Jose Marquez completes the release with a remix of ''Under The Volcano.'' Well established on the deep house scene for his ''Inspiration'' party and brought up on a on a stable diet of Latin and world music , Jose adds more thump to the bump of the original version adding additional western Asian instrumentation into the affair whilst upping the ante on the bpm ever so slightly.

  4. Alkoan Kulu Bidoor (iZem remix) (5:57)
Review: Both Nickodemus and the Wonderwheel imprint are from NYC, and both parties know how to lay down some pure, hypnotic goodness when it comes to house. This time, the former is joined by Alsarah, who provides the mystical, charming Eastern vocals over the deep, progressive beats of "The Crow", a vibrant house tune for the big room; Saangan does his best to inject a little more techno sensibility into the tune. On the flip, "Alkoan Kulu Bidoor" heads into broken beat territories with its slower, sloppier beats, once again guided by Alsarah's arabic spoken word, and iZem provides the 'umph' by layering a rolling, glitchy blend of percussion into the mix. Solid.

  1. Tell It To Me Slowly (feat Nick Richards) (4:12)
  2. Sugar Cane (feat Nubiya Brandon) (4:20)
Review: 12-piece improvisational outfit Nubiyan Twist made a big impression with their 2015 debut album (also called "Nubiyan Twist"), a set that gleefully joined the dots between Afrobeat, jazz, hip-hop, soul and much more besides. Here they make their debut on Strut Records with two more reasons to be cheerful. A-side "Tell It To Me Slowly", featuring guest vocals from Nick Richards, is particularly good, with soulful male and female vocals rising above a loose-limbed broken beat rhythm, warm electric piano riffs, jazzy guitar solos and Afro-tinged horns. Nubiya Brandon joins in the fun on flipside "Sugar Cane", a lolloping, head-nodding slab of hip-hop soul/dub fusion that's as delicious as a Michelin-starred meal and a fraction of the price.

Review: Osage is the alter ego of veteran Philadelphia dj/producer lil'dave. A member of the highly respected Illvibe Collective and the co-host of the internationally known broadcast Eavesdrop Radio, he has released music under various aliases for record labels. BBE Records, Tru Thoughts, Record Breakin' Music and First Word Records to name but a few. His sound incorporates deep house, African rhythms, UK garage, broken beat and much more. Over the years, he has been building a solid reputation, with his tracks supported by notable tastemakers such Gilles Peterson. This 12" compiles four favourite moments from the two EPs that Osage has released thus far on the Brooklyn based Bastard Jazz - who have previously presented works by Soul Clap, Phil Gerus and Dead Horse Beats. From the deep, sexy and soulful house of "I Found You" (feat Dezeray Dawn ) to the spiritual Afro vibe of "Last Call" and the rather Bugz In The Attic sounding "Anyway" (feat Yemi) - this is a solid release.
