Tiptoe (7")
Cat: LT 085. Rel: 08 May 18
  1. Tiptoe (DJ Spinna Galactic Soul remix) (4:36)
  2. Tiptoe (3:33)
Review: Trevor Lawrence Jr impresses us on a constant basis, with his debut album paving a new way for funk and soul music all around the world, subtly swinging to the delicate touch of deep house at its core. This time, however, the imprint is Local Talk, and they've decided to release the "Tiptoe" single onto glorious 7", a format which is perfect to showcase its slow, meandering waves and delightfully seductive vocals; there's a DJ Spinna remix, on top of Lawrence's magnificent single, with the experienced producer coming through smooth and effective thanks to some elegant beat-work and plenty of soulful vibes. Killer!

  2. Waiting (Souleance remix) (4:39)
  3. All Right (S3A remix) (7:29)
  4. Waiting (Rim Laurens remix) (4:58)
Review: Last April may seem like an aeon ago but Llorca's album The Garden has barely left our turntable... until now, as a selection of dope remixes have landed. The forever-delicious disco cut "Waiting" enjoys three twists: Cuthead rips up the dance with Robsoul-style chugger, Souleance dust of the cowbell and add a little more cosmic sparkle while Rim Laurens adds a whole new dramatic dynamic in a way that's not dissimilar to "La Ritornelle" or "Clubbed To Death". Finally S3A takes the come-to-bed poignancy of "All Right" and gives it a little 4/4 pep and loopy insistency. Blooming lovely.

  1. Green Woods (8:50)
  2. Can't Remember But I Know (4:27)
  3. What Does It Take To Come In First (5:43)
Review: Since Dego and Lordamercy (AKA former Bugz In The Attic and Hoomecookin' member Matt Lord) are old pals, it's little surprise to find them joining forces for a tasty 12" on 2000 Black. They begin with the samba-soaked summer sunshine of "Green Woods", where Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synth lines and rich boogie bass ride a shuffling, Brazilian style groove. Speaking of boogie, the duo pay a heartfelt tribute to the early '80s style on "What Does It Take To Come In First", which is built around Herbie Hancock style keys and a righteous slap bass workout. The slightly more broken but no less "live" sounding "Can't Remember But I Know" completes a superb EP.

  1. Standard Jazz
  2. Wenzenwoznow
Review: Tim Love Lee's Peace Feast Industries label seems to be enjoying something of a creative rebirth of late; active since 1994, it was lifted out of decade long dormancy last year with that Sotofett collaboration the obvious highlight. Early presses of Standard Jazz saw the light of day very late in 2014, and now it's been granted an official release and both cuts offer a reminder of the Love man's rich versatility and magical sense of musicianship. "Standard Jazz" is a stark exercise in euphoria; soaring synths, tightly weaved percussion and meandering counter leads flickering in an out of the narrative over nearly 12 minutes. "Wenzenwoznow", meanwhile, is a dense slice of loopy ambient music that's so strong, shimmery and positive it's almost festive.

  6. Mugwisa International Xylophone - "Drop The Beat" (FYI Chris Acid Drop) (6:45)
  7. Penya - "Search It Out" (Peter Croce 4AM Fix) (7:18)
Review: The gloriously off-the-wall On The Corner imprint is back, ready to tear it down with its predictably unpredictable chain of artists who reside firmly in the 'ODDS' space. Much like the previous releases, this is a mixed bag of outernational goodness and jazzy sensibilities, offering a release which truly blurs the lines of the extended 'dance' space. Our top picks in running order: Black Classical's "JeJe" is one of the most innovstive uses of percussion and organ that we've heard this side of year, Sam Jones' "Group As Salaam Construct" is probably THE definition of off-kilter thanks to its lopsided beat groove, and "Simba" by Daisho takes the whole polyrhythmic equation onto the minimal end of the spectrum. Quirky, refreshing and absolutely recommended new strains of floor music.

  2. Clareia (2000 Black remix) (5:58)
  3. Clareia (IG Culture remix) (6:30)
Review: Surely one of the most fitting albums of the summer, Sabrina Malheiros's fifth LP Clareia undergoes some stately remix treatment as we move from open fields to sweaty clubs to party for the rest of the year. Three of broken beat's finest and most respected protagonists all play a role... Man of the moment Henry Wu gets woozy on the organs and widens the whole jam out into seven minutes of space funk, Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black dig deep into the bossa dynamic with a Latin jazzy spiritual feel running throughout the momentum while CoOp founder IG Culture adds a little skip to the drums, dreamy plucks and bassline that won't stop bouncing. If it's bruk, don't try and fix it.

Review: With "Frontin & My Adidas" Taggy Matcher returns with another soul/rap/reggae mash-up. This time round it's Pharell's "Frontin" acappella dropped over a deep dub beat - all the way to Kingston. On the flip side they feature a rocksteady version of a true hip-hop/electro classic! "My Adidas" is a great reworking of the RUN DMC tune, with a dub-like rhythm to it and a really classic sound overall. Stix present these two top-notch party pieces.

  1. Shocked
  2. Run Sally Run!
  3. Slick Maneuver
  4. Perfection Valley
Review: After four volumes of smoking hot disco house business from El Nino, Jackie Brown turn their attention to debutant producer MB22, who understands the party-starting manifesto of the label intrinsically. "Shocked" kicks the record off in a flurry of heated chops and licks, all driven by a nagging hat, and then "Run Sally Run" switches stance to a winsome 80s tinged electro jam, tape-hiss included. "Slick Maneuver" takes things into smooth, boogie-indebted territory and then "Perfection Valley" rounds the record off with the kind of dusty electro funk that Moon B made his name with.

Review: Rewind and relax as Menage A Trois continue to take us back. Following the third part of their deep down under series, comes a timely reissue of the inaugural part from 2015. Silky, restrained, shimmering and delicate, all the sandy-toed elements are in place. Swooning sunbaked chords on "Unconditional Love", the soothing aftersun synth cream and somnambulant vocals of "Message In A Bottle", the gentle ebb and flow of "Same Deep Water As Us", it's the ultimate shoreside experience without moving from your comfiest chair. Reissue bliss.

  1. Bring Me Down (9:32)
  2. Bring Me Down (Theo Parrish translation) (9:35)
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

His own bespoke instrument The Beat Thang has also been used the likes of Jermaine Dupree, RocWilder and Dallas Austin. Here Reavis shows his skills across a sexy six pack of slow-burning instrumentals. While we teeter over the edge of R&B and soul, the main emphasis is on hip-hop. Highlights include the cute synth horn parps on "Sticky" and the lolloping Brownswood style jazz riddim on "4 Ari". Instrumental grooves don't get much sweeter or succinct.

Review: Two years on from the release of Modifications: Set 1, Adam Scrimshire and Dave Koor join forces once more as Modified Man. This second "Set" explores similar sonic territory to its predecessor, with the duo delivering jaunty, semi-improvised cuts that mix Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk synthesizer work and sparkling, Dam Funk style sounds with beats and basslines that variously draw inspiration from dusty, sample-rich deep house, L.A experimental hip-hop, dub, broken beat (the ace "Croydon Rooftop Cafe Culture") and intergalactic space jazz (starburst closer "Thorns"). It takes a few listens to really get to grips with all of the duo's musical intricacies, but it's definitely worth the effort.

  2. Butti 49 - "Spiritual Rotations"
Review: For the fourth volume in Mukatsuku's ongoing Jazz Classics series, label boss Nik Weston has decided to reissue two lesser-known gems from the nu-jazz era. On side A you'll find Kirk Degiorgio in As One mode, laying down a sublime chunk of sultry jazz bliss that comes laden with virtuoso horn playing and some superb keys-work from then session player Jamie Odell (AKA Jimpster). It was recorded almost 20 years ago, but sounds timeless. Equally as impressive is Butti 49's "Spiritual Radiations", a bright-and-breezy, soul-flecked chunk of jazz positivity that sounds like Rotary Connection jamming with Kyoto Jazz Massive.Juno copies come with an exclusive hand-numbered obi strip not available at other stores plus branded sleeve & sticker.DJ support so far from Spiritland,Faze Action,Nicola Conte, Kalita Records Chris,Nick Emanative,Simon S and Kay Suzuki

Review: With releases on 22a, Beat X Changers and Wolf Music, Bradley Zero is very pleased to welcome Neue Grafik onboard his revered imprint. The record itself paying homage to the Parisian house dance scene, while taking cues from the broken beat sound of London - like on the emotive slo-mo soul of "Innervision" feat Wayne Snow or "To Peckham Rye" which definitely takes its cue from Kaidi Tatham. We particularly enjoyed the very Three Chairs influenced deepness of "Dance To Yemanjaor" and the the ruff 'n' dusty MPC jam "Why You" reminiscent of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. The tracks are largely sample based, but also employ much more live instrumentation than in previous productions.

Review: Both Nickodemus and the Wonderwheel imprint are from NYC, and both parties know how to lay down some pure, hypnotic goodness when it comes to house. This time, the former is joined by Alsarah, who provides the mystical, charming Eastern vocals over the deep, progressive beats of "The Crow", a vibrant house tune for the big room; Saangan does his best to inject a little more techno sensibility into the tune. On the flip, "Alkoan Kulu Bidoor" heads into broken beat territories with its slower, sloppier beats, once again guided by Alsarah's arabic spoken word, and iZem provides the 'umph' by layering a rolling, glitchy blend of percussion into the mix. Solid.

Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

Review: Osage is the alter ego of veteran Philadelphia dj/producer lil'dave. A member of the highly respected Illvibe Collective and the co-host of the internationally known broadcast Eavesdrop Radio, he has released music under various aliases for record labels. BBE Records, Tru Thoughts, Record Breakin' Music and First Word Records to name but a few. His sound incorporates deep house, African rhythms, UK garage, broken beat and much more. Over the years, he has been building a solid reputation, with his tracks supported by notable tastemakers such Gilles Peterson. This 12" compiles four favourite moments from the two EPs that Osage has released thus far on the Brooklyn based Bastard Jazz - who have previously presented works by Soul Clap, Phil Gerus and Dead Horse Beats. From the deep, sexy and soulful house of "I Found You" (feat Dezeray Dawn ) to the spiritual Afro vibe of "Last Call" and the rather Bugz In The Attic sounding "Anyway" (feat Yemi) - this is a solid release.

Review: Carol Sawall, Jimmy Ellis, Tyler Mitchell, Usama Pitts and, of course, Paris Smith himself make up the legendary - and much overlooked - The Paris Smith Quintet, and are famed for the infamous Thought Seeds LP that came out on Oracle Records way back in 1983. While they have all done their own thing on the side, this particular album has reached cult fandom in the free-jazz category, and is still referenced by many as the 'one'. Norway's Jazzagression have reissued it in all its glory, and have also put out a single comprised of its tow best cuts, "Thought Seeds" and "Lilith Came". The former is a moody, powerful track with a danceable bassline, while the latter fades the drums and energy into a marvelously placid wave of melodies and harmony. Wonderful.

Footwork (12")
Cat: SS 053. Rel: 07 Jun 14
  1. Footwork
  2. Tympanic Warfare
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

  1. Manceingelani - "Vana Vasesi" (Theo Parrish remix)
  2. Zinja Hlungwani - "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" (Burnt Friedman remix)
Review: Honest Jon's continued endeavours to choose the interesting remix artists to tackle the high BPM joys of their Shangaan Electro compilation sees them turn to that venerable Detroit magician and erstwhile Wu Tang Clan member Theo Parrish. The Sound Signature boss comes through with a masterful thirteen minute plus rewiring of Mancingelani's "Vana Vasesi" which retains the thunderous tempo and brilliantly chaotic rhythms yet instils the track with a woozy, intoxicating swing via the twisting synth waves. Complementing this, iconic German producer Burnt Friedman turns in a remix of "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" by Zinja Hlungwani which is far less frenetic but no less enjoyable, flipping the track in a dub wise style with off kilter drum programming, spine tingling keys and staggered vocal affectations.
