Review: Leaving Records continues to gift us the most blissful sounds from parts unknown, or more specifically the LA underground, with this album from Fabiano Do Nascimento. The Brazil-born guitarist carries his roots through into his playing, gently folding samba and choro influences and a rich background in Brazilian classical into compositions embellished with the lightest touches of electronics. It's a resolutely soothing listen, as you would expect from Leaving, but it's not a static field of ambience. Rather, there are hidden treasures and intriguing pathways Nascimento leads us down, always finding a sense of resolution even the surroundings shift before our ears.

His meticulously crafted record takes us on a journey of awakening that reimagines the young Black British experience. The band features a long list of guests on an equally long list of instruments, but the immediately recognisable guitar stylings of Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - one of Stuart's biggest influences growing up in Chicago - leave an unmistakable indentation on the sound, The album's title track clocks in somewhere between the squelchy synths of Weather Report and the luxuriant Rhodes piano of mid 70s Miles Davis. 'Nostalgia' is approaching ambient, but its serene glide is very organic and tactile, while 'Scooter Bistro' uses drum & bass rhythms as a starting point for a live, drum-focused slow burner. 'Joy Ride', meanwhile, employs almost proggy, dazzling keys over bustling beat energy. The noddle-phobic might find it a little too demonstrative, but if you love jazz and yearn to hear it alive and kicking in fresh new shapes, this is likely to be right up your street.

Review: Black is the first record from saxophone player D.A. Mekonnen under the Dragonchild alias. He is someone who is always thinking in cosmic terms and this sonic exploration draws on that with inspiration taken from Black visionaries Haile Gerima, an Ethiopian filmmaker, nonconformist American artist Lonnie Holley, and American activist and author Adrienne Maree Brown. All four of the one-sided albums are designed to be played simultaneously and are made in tribute to the great Alice Coltrane whose influence looms large. It is a ferocious and meditative album unlike any other you will hear this year.

Review: Jonny Drop working with Andre Ashong is not a collab you might have seen coming, but it is one you will be glad has happened. Puzzle Dust is reportedly an album that was four years in the making and it comes on a lovely blue slab of vinyl. Musically it is a work that fuses soul and psychedelia with stripped-back broken beats, dusty drums and lo-fi rhythms peppered with earthy percussion. At times sunny and upbeat, at others stoned and horizontal, Ashong's hazy vocals colour the tracks with his signature smoky soul. A fantastic coming together of two diverse but quality artists.
