Review: The 2011 debut album from The Soul Session (AKA German multi-instrumentalist and producer Ralph Kiefer) was something of an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink treat: a soulful romp featuring a string of guest vocalists that took in a dizzying array of sounds and styles. He's taken the same approach on this long-awaited follow-up, wrapping deliciously soulful vocals (provided by talented singers including UK legend Omar and regular collaborator Anaj) around skewed hip-hop beats, heavy dub "riddims", jazz-funk fusion grooves, jaunty jazz workouts, West Coast jazz-rock instrumentals, rich Latin house and even punchy D&B breakbeats. The results are uniformly excellent and thoroughly enjoyable.
