Review: The iconic On-U-Sound serves up a quick-fire follow up to the New Age Stepper's self-titled debut, in the form of this new set from the same year, 1981. It's less dark, more melodic, and therefore more accessible than the last outing and is largely built on versions of tunes sourced from reggae imports of the era. Bim Sherman, Horace Andy and B.B. Seaton all get radically reinvented and redefined with Ari Up of the Slits taking centre stage on many tunes with her great vocal turns. This one hasn't been on wax for more than 40 years and now comes with new liner notes and interviews.

Review: When Ari Up and Adrian Sherwood assembled the New Age Steppers collective to record their third studio album, Foundation Steppers, in 1983, they made a conscious decision to move away from the abrasive, experimental dub sound that had marked out their previous two sets. With a formidable backing band and horn section lending a hand, and frequent Sherwood collaborator Bim Sherman sharing mic duties with Ari Up, the result was a set closer in tone to traditional roots reggae - albeit with a post-punk twist - than anything else in their catalogue. Here reissued on wax, Foundation Steppers remains a fine album, offering an accessible entry point to the discography of one of British dub music's most distinctive acts.

Review: To coincide with the release of an expansive CD box-set and superb re-issues of New Age Steppers' original albums, Adrian Sherwood has trawled through the vaults and put together a companion compilation that draws on rare dubs, unheard tracks and alternate takes from the entirety of the Ari Up-fronted project's existence. It's a fine collection that should appeal to both confirmed fans and newcomers alike, with highlights including 'Send For Me', a previously unreleased Atlantic Starr cover originally recorded for a 1983 Peel Session, the tipsy brilliance of 'Some Dub' (a formerly buried re-interpretation of Foundation Steppers opener 'Some Love'), and 1980 track 'Izalize', which later became the basis of an African Head Charge cut.

Review: Having previously delivered a must-have, quintuple CD retrospective of African Head Charge's influential albums, On-U-Sound has wisely decided to give the same treatment to Slits singer Ari Up and Adrian Sherwood's equally as influential New Age Steppers project - an outfit whose rotating cast of guest musicians included a string of British post-punk greats. Discs one to four showcase, in sequence, the collective's spaced-out, often experimental dub albums released between 1980 and 2012 (The New Age Steppers, Action Battlefield, Foundation Steppers and Love Forever). The fifth and final disc, subtitled Avant Gardening, gathers together rare dubs, unreleased tracks and "version excursions" from the archives. Throw in extensive sleeve notes from Oli Warwick telling the story of the project and you have a nigh on essential boxset.

Review: 41 years after its original release, it's hard to grasp just how revolutionary the New Age Steppers self-titled debut album was. The brainchild of the Slits' Ari Up and producer Adrian Sherwood, the set brought paired the cream of the post-punk scene (including the Pop Group's Mark Stewart and journalist Vivian Goldman) with a string of experienced dub-wise players to create a set that genuinely took dub and roots reggae in thrilling new directions (think alien noises, industrial sounds, experimental effects and squally guitar textures). Now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, New Age Steppers is an album that should genuinely be in every serious music-head's collection.
