Review: Last year, Phil Everum surprisingly relaunched The Microphones, his post-rock vehicle of the late 90s and early-to-mid-2000s, in order to release an album that contained just one 45-minute song. That might sound a bit much, but it was actually rather good all told, with plenty of musical twists and turns and lyrics from Everum that looked back on his life experiences to date. This follow-up is even more surprising. Described as "ambient, but not ambient music", The Foghorn Tape consists entirely of a looped bass tone - created to sound like a classic cliff-top foghorn - drenched in varying amounts of hiss, noise and gritty aural fuzz.

Review: Phil Elverum brings his treasured Microphones moniker back to life, and it's what we needed. Music that has and offers space to think, breath and exist, it's a brooding journey through meditative rock and something of an essay on reforming song craft. A 45-minute song about art, self-image and a search for answers to questions bigger than we have space to discuss here.

In many ways it's jarring simple - a bare bones two- chord guitar melody spanning intro to outro. But it's deceptively complex, too. A prolific musician (Elverum also records as Mount Erie) showing his awesome ability to captivate with depth that sucks us further in, his earlier experimentations with sound art and analogue noise are also resurrected by way of background distortions, clangs, moments of tension and release that act as breadcrumbs guiding us through a masterpiece dense enough to get lost in.
