Review: While touring their 2016 album 'Eyeland', The Low Anthem were involved in a near-fatal crash, destroying their instruments and bringing the tour to a halt. Following this, band leader Ben Knox Miller began writing and recording demos at home which would form the basis of a new album and - once band members had recovered from injuries - they developed the sketches into 'The Salt Doll Went Down To Measure The Depth Of The Sea', a record inspired by a Buddhist fable and stemming directly from the band's personal experiences. In its tone, the album is markedly different from their previous upbeat and energetic indie-folk work. 'The Salt Doll...' is richly layered; lush string arrangements, cyclic percussive phrases, spacious synth bleeps and Miller's hushed vocals create an immersive soundscape that's impossible not to be drawn into. Though it was borne out of narrowly avoiding tragedy, 'The Salt Doll...' is a remarkably hopeful album that is as calming as it is delicately poignant.
