  8. Can You Ever Really Know Somebody (5:43)
  9. The Brighter The Light (7:57)
Review: While Juan MacLean, LCD Soundsystem's Nancy Whang and Holy Ghost!'s Nick Millhiser have always had one eye on the dancefloor, their albums have tended to be slightly more eccentric and esoteric affairs that lack some of the sparkle associated with their more joyous, club-ready cuts. It's perhaps for this reason that they've spent the last six years releasing DJ-friendly 12" singles, thus avoiding making a new album altogether. In hindsight, it seems a wise choice because "The Brighter The Light" - a compilation of those dancefloor-focused releases shot through with references to various vintage club styles and bottom-end weight to match - is their most vibrant, colourful and enjoyable full-length to date.

Panic In Fort Greene Park EP
Panic In Fort Greene Park EP (orange vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 021. Rel: 11 Jul 18
  1. Fine Time (7:01)
  2. Don’t Stop For Nothing (7:11)
  3. Everybody Clap (6:12)
  4. Panic In Fort Greene Park (7:06)
Review: Given that Juan MacLean has released almost all of his music on DFA, we were rather surprised when this Razor 'N' Tape Reserve 12" showed up. We suspect that these are sample-heavy dancefloor tracks from MacLean's personal stash - the kind of cuts you regularly hear in his DJ sets but have previously not seen the light of day. Check, for example, the percussive peak-time romp that is muscular disco loop jam "Fine Time" and the classic boogie-meets-NYC house fusion of "Don't Stop For Nothing", which tips a sly wink towards Toney Lee classic "Reach Up". Elsewhere, "Everybody Clap" is a dustier, looser and hazier deep house excursion, while "Panic In Fort Greene Park" sees MacLean smother a trippy and hypnotic groove in spacey motifs and acid-style electronics.

Motordisc 3
Cat: MTR 003. Rel: 27 Jan 21
Deep House
  1. The Juan MacLean - "Are We Still Dreaming (Beats In Space)" (6:54)
  2. Javi Redondo - "Mark 211" (6:31)
  3. Naduve - "Safe Sabbath" (7:08)
  4. Fairmont - "Peppi" (6:46)
Review: Motordiscs continues its mission here with a third EP of classy house and techno sounds. It is the super talented studio wizard The JuanMacLean who opens up with a slow, gurgling techno workout that has plenty of kosmiche vibes. Javi Redondo's 'Mark 211' is a big acid flasher with bright chords, squiggling 303 lines and chunky drums that draw you in. Naduve then gets more mysterious and deep on the otherworldly 'Safe Sabbath' and Fairmont's 'Peppi' rounds out with a colourful disco cut from the future. These are bright, contemporary cuts that melt techno, electro, synth and disco into something fresh.
