Marka (12")
Cat: EXIT 037. Rel: 24 Jan 12
Drum And Bass
  1. Marka (feat Strategy)
  2. Rags
Review: D Bridge's Exit Records continues its boundary pushing endeavours within the confines of the drum & bass genre with this much anticipated collaborative release from Manchester based Dub Phixix and Skeptical. That anticipation is down to "Marka", surely one of the most forward thinking D&B tracks in recent times, and accompanied by a spookily suitable video that's clocked up half a million YouTube views in little under two months. Combining a half-step rhythm with warped bass growls, metallic lined woodblock snare hits and sinister atmospherics, it's nonetheless given its unique character by Strategy's menacing, dub leaning vocal contribution. "Rags" meanwhile proves to be just as vital, utilizing minimal percussive tics with vinyl crackle and sharp snares, teasing as it threatens to break into an all out assault. Highly recommended.

Drum And Bass
  1. Dub Phizix & Strategy - "Buffalo Charge"
  2. Dub Phizix - "Bounce"
Review: If you've been within a 50 mile radius of a Dub Phizix set you'll have heard his and Strategy's battle jam "Buffalo Charge" and it's undoubtedly one of the biggest tunes in D&B right now. A slick groove (all steppy and uncompromising in the way only Phizzy knows how), full emphasis is on Strategy's perplexingly rapid lyrics. "Bounce" is a much darker jam where hardcore drums bounce with an almost gabber-like sense of drama. No one is doing it like these guys.... But then you knew that already, right?

  1. Return From The Stars
  2. Return From The Stars (Pev Jerky remix)
Review: Portland meets Bristol on the latest Idle Hands release as Strategy adds to his respectable discography with Return From The Stars which features a blinding remix from that man Pev. Take a glance at the labels Strategy has released on and you can't fail to be impressed with albums on Kranky and Peak Oil complemented by 12" transmissions for 100% Silk and Endless Flight. The penchant for melding hardware house music with dubbier textures on recent material is definitely in effect here with "Return From The Stars" sounding like an outsider's take on Bristol's rich soundsystem culture. Ably backing it up is Pev's self styled "Jerky" remix which strips the original down to its bare essentials; its radiophonic gurgles and elongated reverb trails sounds closer to his classic dub-influenced Punch Drunk tracks 12?s than his recent Livity Sound output.

Review: experimental imprints such as Kranky, tigerbeat6 and Southern Lord. His main project though is Strategy which encompasses a wide variety of styles such as house, techno, ambient, experimental/noise, dub and more. He operates the Community Library and the currently dormant Archigramophone label too.The Future Shock EP features a wide selection of moods and grooves: from the ravey early '90s techno workout of the title track, the classic deep house vibe of the emotive "Forgotten Encounter" and the hypnotic outsider house of "Monsterzellos".

  6. Rhen's Loop (8:51)
Review: Having issued albums on Idle Hands and Entr'acte already this year, Portland produce Paul 'Strategy' Dickow lands another full length blow in the shape of Noise Tape Self for Seattle's Further Records. Such is Dickow's mastery as a producer, you always get something different with every Strategy release he puts out and that's the case with Noise Tape Self. Some six tracks long, the album is the end result of Dickow's nascent experiments with making his own tape loops within cassettes and working within that framework on a four-track recorder. Naturally a wonderfully fuzzy hue sits over the album that fully envelops the listener in a warm cloud of soft focus abstraction - "Ominous Lovely Piano" is a particular highlight.

  8. The Wet Room (4:02)
Review: Paul Dickow aka Strategy hails from Portland, Oregon but his heart is firmly placed in the kind of dubby, gutter-friendly experimental music that's been coming out of Bristol for the last twenty years. In fact, the city's bass specialist shop Idle Hands has decided to put out his latest full-length after releasing an EP of his last year. The man has also been dishing out his sounds via his own Community Library imprint and has even appeared on the shadowy Zam Zam label. Seeds Of Paradise is an LP without any concrete form or genre and yet the eight tracks all share a mutual aesthetic, one that's dripping with mysticism and a tropical sort of vibe. Tracks like "Virtual America" or "Wiggle Room" way from side to side thanks to broken slices of percussion, glitchy shreds of field recordings and a hard form of ambience. Killer stuff, seriously.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Fields Of May
  2. Fields Of May (Secondo remix)
  3. VCoda
Review: If we had to pick one word to describe this record, it would be "thick". Strategy takes off into deep Detroit influenced house territory on fields of may, and the result is a foggy, weatherbeaten, hypnotic and incredibly heavy title track. Strategy's dsp trickery is still in evidence, but takes a backseat here to a much more organic sound. A serious late-night burner which fans of Moodymann or the mole ought to dig. Will keep you warm this winter. Secondo turns in a remix which ups the energy level a bit, taking it into a territory which we feel comfortable calling tech-house. A friendly sound but with serious tension for the floor. Last on the flip is the wonderful vocoder, a spiky and thoroughly gorgeous experiment in ambient techno/dub.

Review: Level up! Strategy sheds a little light on skills you might not know he's got in the form of "Lanterns", his debut EP. Usually known for rallying up the troops with Dub Phizix and laying down rapid-fire bars, here we find the Salford vibe lord showcasing his beat skills... And they're serious. From the click-boom ricochets of the title track to the rare-cooked menace of "Kings Of Kochi" via the waspy political triple-skipper "Put God First", this is Strategy writing a whole new chapter. Pay attention.

  3. Fossil Data (9:16)
  4. Tower Of Babble (8:07)
Review: Sometimes, it just takes a label like the US' excellent Further to release music as gnarly and as daring as Strategy's; the recent LP by Nuel, for instance, is a shining example of the way that these dudes like to do things. "Public Voyeurs" sets in motion a sort of sonic whirlpool made up of grainy drones and rhythmic patters of beatless sound that becomes yet more distorted and wild on "Relix". "Fossil Data" is as molecular and alien as you can possibly get, and it's definitely our favourite moment on here - a nod to the Aaron Dilloway fans around - while "Tower Of Babble" scratches and unleashes its rover of harsh distortions left, right and centre in a pool of liquid noise. Sick and highly recommended.
