Review: Given the astounding level of productivity in the ambient scene, where many producers release a number of albums every year, the three years it's taken Steve Hauschildt to put together Where All Is Fled seems like an eternity. Clearly, it was time well spent, though, because it's a wonderfully expressive, evocative and emotion-rich set. Full of sweeping strings, Namlook-like synthesizer refrains, bubbling electronics and becalmed chords, it's 14 tracks flit between intense beauty, drifting poignancy, and horizontal dreaminess. Highlights are plentiful, from the twinkling, Nils Frahm style piano motifs of the title track, to the spacey, ambient house era pulse of "Aequus".

Review: Steve Hauschildt is no newcomer to the blossoming ambient scene, having released his first album almost a decade ago. In that time, he's earned a reputation for crafting genuinely poignant electronic music that neatly sidesteps ambient's various stylistic cliches. There's plenty to get excited about on this latest full-length - his fourth for venerable Chicago institution Kranky - starting with the sun-bright, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer arpeggios of the brilliant "Same River Twice". Elsewhere, he gets stunningly melancholic on the drifting beauty of "A False Seeming", doffs a cap to Global Communication and Steve Hillage on the glistening positivity of "Ketracel", and gives Pete Namlook a run for his money on the spacey wonder of "Strands".

Dissolvi (CD)
Cat: GI 320CD. Rel: 03 Aug 18
Ambient/Drone

  3. Saccade (feat Julianna Barwick)
  4. Alienself
  5. Aroid
  6. Syncope (feat GABI)
  7. Lyngr
  8. Dissolvi
Review: Since Emeralds disbanded earlier in the decade, Steve Hauschildt has impressed with a serious of largely overlooked albums on Kranky that showcased his innate ability to craft distinctly melodic music that sits somewhere between IDM, slowly shifting ambient, droning soundscapes and more ethereal home listening techno. Dissolvi, his first album for Ghostly International, could well be his most accomplished solo work to date. While it explores similar sonic territory to previous full-length releases, the set is bolder, more atmospheric and, at times, intensely beautiful. While undoubtedly fresh, those with long memories will note audible nods to ambient and deep techno greats of the early 1990s, including Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum), Pete Namlook and, most obviously, Boards of Canada. In a word: timeless.
