  1. Freerotation I
  2. Freerotation II (Jackmate dub)
Review: Freerotation is one of the UK festival circuit's best kept secrets, with this year's edition notable for about 15 sets from Move D. Inspired by events such as this, Philpot boss Soulphiction recorded these two tracks in honour of the festival whilst rehearsing for his live set at Freerotation this year. Raw, deep and emotive, the A Side version of "Freerotation" dovetails between drifting chords, delightfully light key refrains and juddering vocal swoops over the brittle jacking drums. Flipside, "Freerotation II" features some nicely spaced vocals from Suzana Rozkosny and is a more rhythmically intricate counterpart to the A Side, unfurling into some brilliantly dubby key patterns and unannounced deviations into acid freakout status.

  2. Bass Jam
  3. With Attitude
  4. Detox
  5. Riot Party
Review: Of all the German house producers, Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction is the most heavily influenced by American artists. You can hear it at every bar on this release. Although "Ann Arbor" starts the release unexpectedly with a horror soundtrack and ghoulish vocal rambling on about the US town, the track quickly veers into the raw, loopy sound that has become Baumann's signature. From there on in, the release veers from the jazzy "Bass Jam" and the techno-oriented filtered groove of "With Attitude" into the sleazy groove of "Riot Party" and the disco-led "Detox". It's ideal for fans of Omar S, KDJ and Rick Wade.

  1. Glitz

Review: Philpot co-founder Soulphiction deftly twirls his dusty, scratchy disco ball with the loopy, luscious "Glitz". Strutting with a chugging 4/4 and a dreamy loop that reveals more and more of itself as the groove develops, it's an instant cause for total dancefloor hypnosis. Remix-wise Patrice Scott applies a thick bed of slinky acid and classic Mr Fingers style pads to "Jinx". Two wholly different chapters to the ever-developing house saga, one enduring story... Get to know!

Review: Here comes the first 12" after Soulphiction's "State of Euphoria" album release on Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv imprint. Back home from a safari with his son in Kenia, he's kicking his atmospheric tracks to the limit, you can literally feel the vibes of the Mara down Africa! "Masai Mara" drops some lovely spring-flavoured arpeggios on massive wardrums, layering it to an absolute climax, the good side of trance! "Keekorok" on the flip is a sunriser, with its sliding synthstabs and old-school but totally up-pushing beats.

  1. Bizzness (5:37)

  3. Slow Glow (3:15)
  4. Sweet Dreams (4:22)
Review: Philpot co-founder Soulphiction has been MIA for a while now, making it an utter pleasure to have him back on our charts with some effective new house swingers. He's landed on Local Talk, one of the very best in its class, and "Bizzness" kicks off with a funky-ass bassline and some freaky vocal chops, while "Cart People" lingers at a steadier sort of tempo, filtered through mounds of dubbed-out haze. "Slow Glow" is an experiment in percussion, also meandering its wavy synths on an off-kilter mode, and "Sweet Dreams" works the drum-machine in and out of the groove, ending up with another off-balance house experiment for the deeper minds out there on the floor!

  1. Misty Roots (3:06)
  2. Bricks (5:52)
  3. Amerika (6:45)
Review: Philpot co-founder Michael Baumann last appeared on Musik Krause in 2014 with the slightly overlooked Riot Party 12". Here, he presents a belated sequel, once again showcasing his deft touch and effortless soulfulness. Opener "Misty Roots" is typical of his trademark style, with loosely programmed beats, deep chords and dusty vocal samples combining on an off-kilter deep house treat. The dirt-encrusted sound is emphasized on the booming "Brick", in which booming drums are eventually joined by tipsy horn lines and dreamy, drawn-out chords. Finally, he goes deep into early morning territory with the surging drums, distorted bass, creepy held notes and sweaty build-ups of "Amerika".

Review: Philpot Records maestro Soulphiction may not have appeared on Lumberjacks In Hell before, but he's cited as a big influence on the label, and here the Stuttgart-based artist gets four chances to unfurl his deft instinct for dusty, soul and funk-infused house music. "Stick Up" gets the MPC grooves and twisting bass licks rolling beautifully, while "B3B4URD1" injects a little Afro-flavoured funk into the mix with another addictive low end flex. "Acid Test" pours a little more jack into the pot without losing that crooked Soulphiction flavour, and then "Dirty Hot" does a mean job of teaching all newcomers how to really do an edit.

  2. Blues Theory (Churchapella) (5:19)
  3. Hustler's Ball (4:53)
Review: Three years on from the release of his first Live Jamz EP, Soulphiction delivers a second salvo of loose and sweaty, straight-to-tape workouts. Choose between the hazy chords, slipped drum machine rhythms and sampled spoken word vocals of "The Ingredients" (think Theo Parrish crossed with late night German deep house), the deliciously bass-heavy, gospel house stomp of "Blues Theory (Churchapella)" and "Hustler's Ball", a thrilling, pitched-up fusion of disco samples and the producer's own brilliantly programmed beats. This latter track is particularly celebratory, and we'd wager it goes down a storm in Soulphiction's live sets.

  1. SoulPhiction - "Temptations"
  2. Daniel Stefanik - "Studio R"
  3. Freund Der Familie - "Kantine"
  4. Oyeq - "Night Park"
Review: Near Berlin's Ostbahnhof station lies Studio R, a hidden internet streaming podcast bunker: like the Boiler Room but done the German way with no fanfare. Their release operandi so far seems to be the various artist approach, and after making a statement with their first EP, which included a track from DJ Qu and DJ-turned-producer Eric Cloutier, the quietly confident Studio R present a further four names. Soulphiction starts off with an analogue plodding disco cut 'n' shake "Tempation" while Kann artist Daniel Stefanik dedicates his track to the label by calling it "Studio R", which is something reminiscent to Parallax Beat Brothers' "Exhalation" who DJ Sprinkles famously remixed. On the flip is a dubby rhythm track by the Freund Der Familie crew, who recently showed they have what it takes to produce music like this on a larger scale with last year's Alfa album, but most interestingly on this EP is a track by the so far unknown Oyeq, providing something which sounds like a melodic trip that could have come out of camp Giegling.

  4. Duktus & Blunted Monkz - "Tokyo Hotel" (6:28)
Review: The recently found Soul Imago label delivers its first 'various artists' compilation and makes itself known thanks to some help by a rather talented fellow. Soulphiction, founder and label-head of the ridiculously on-point Philpot imprint, comes through with "Swing Low" and it's as jazzy as the dude gets, where nervous piano keys meet a big wood-bass and a little electronic post-production. Also featured are tracks by Russian house aficionado Lay-Far, whose "Looking For Changes" is remixed by Pablo Valentino, Noa Siano's minimalistic "Rhodesy", and the slow-building, chug-alicious "Tokyo Hotel" by Duktus & Blunted Monkz.

  1. SoulPhiction - "Sky So High" (5:52)
  2. Mike Dehnert - "Zumwald" (6:39)
Review: Bang, boom, biff! New label alert from contemporary house maestros Soulphiction and Mike Dehnert, a collaboration which has caught us by surprise and left us trailing by the wayside. Masterful. Hands & Tief is the name of the home to this punchy two-tracker that sees both artists put on their techno mask and offer something a little moodier than their usual output, respectively. "Sky So High" is Soulphiction going for a distorted, industrial approach and it works like a charm; the tune's percussion is raw and mashable in any mix, the bassline ominous and intriguing, and the groove powerful and body-moving. Mike Dehnert's "Zumwald" is more in line with his usual bags of tricks, except that here the lower frequencies are more aligned to the electro dynasty than a classic 'Berlin' approach. Both sleek, effective dance floor bangers recommended for pretty much any DJ wanting to lay down some heat!
