Depth Frame EP

Techno
  1. In-Depth
  2. Out Of Frame
Review: It's a double helping of Swiss techno bliss with a Belgian twist as Depth Frame sees Deetron and Ripperton get it on for the first time ever (weird huh?) for the Music Man imprint. For those immune to clues, "In Depth" is the sort of peak time ruff deep jack these two excel at, throwing a cacophony of vocals around the depths of a swampy backing as percussion in need of some WD40 brings the Detroit flavour. "Out of Frame'' is far rowdier, handclaps barely noticeable amidst the lysergic menace of the bass growl which is offset by the undulating patterns of glistening musical colour.

Review: After years spent operating in the grey area where deep house, techno and tech-house meet, Raphael Ripperton has decided to indulge his ambient side. He's touched on the style on previous albums, of course, but "Contrails" marks the first time he's completely eschewed the demands of the dancefloor. He should perhaps do it more often, because it's a genuinely evocative, atmospheric and eye-opening excursion. The double album's 14 tracks are full of subtle differences and gentle stylistic shifts, from the ghostly electronics and hissing aural textures of "Lonely Walk" and the stretched-out, Tangerine Dream style analogue synthesizer fluidity of "Lavaux", to the Pete Namlook style deep space wooziness of "Where The Wind Blows" and the Steve Reich-meets-Gaussian Curve shimmer of "Dedale".

Review: A Little Part Of Shade is the second album from Swiss producer Ripperton, arriving some three years on from his decidedly luscious debut long player Niwa. As was the case with that debut, A Little Part Of Shade sees release via Joris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal's Green label, and this collaboration heavy album arrives with Ripperton having made moves to establish his own outlet via the fledgling Tamed Musiq label. This thirteen track set is a mature one from Ripperton, demonstrating all new levels of mood setting in an effort to deliver that most elusive of goals; a cohesive electronic artist album. Ripperton's talent for fluidly written, playful melodies is highlighted and the choice of vocalists really makes matters work - see Hemlock Smith's breezy turn on standout track "Tape Hiss".

Let's Hope (12")
Cat: TMQ 004. Rel: 12 Sep 12
Deep House
  1. Let's Hope
  2. Let's Hope (Bicep remix)
Review: Swiss producer Ripperton maintains his 100 per cent appearance record on the Tamed Musiq imprint he established some twelve months ago with the brazenly euphoric fourth release Lets Hope, which comes backed with a fine Bicep remix. While you get the feeling Ripperton could possibly turn out infinitely building techy numbers in his sleep, there's no denying the hypnotic effect of "Let's Hope". Weaving woozily through a potent melange of treated strings, piano motifs, obscure vocals and thick bass stabs, Ripperton's knack for subtle peaks and drops works wonders here. In what's possibly their most high profile remix commission yet, Bicep also excel working from their familiar palette of seductive house sounds to craft an effort that's got a pleasant rhythmic kink to it.

Deep House
  1. For All The Wrong Reasons
  2. For All The Wrong Reasons (Skudge remix)
Review: Ripperton launches his Tamed Musiq imprint in style, with an original cut from the man himself alongside a remix from Juno faves Skudge. A subtle yet throbbing bassline wedges itself below a distant vocal, occasional piano stabs and a gently soaring synth note, marking for a deeply cerebral slice of headphone tackle from the perennially underrated producer. Swedish duo Skudge, unsurprisingly, take the track into darker territory, with a version the bumps and sweats in all the right places. Nicely presented in a cardboard sleeve and simple but striking artwork.

  1. A Skilift Upstairs The Sleeping City (original mix)
  2. A Skilift Upstairs The Sleeping City (Vertigo dub)
Review: Raphaël Ripperton shows that Switzerland is not only the country of mountains, watches and chocolate. In fact he proves that his homebase, Lausanne, is the right place to create deep and atmospheric beats to be released on well known imprints like James Holden´s Border Community, Matthew Jonson’s Wagon Repair and Connaisseur! Now it’s time for a very essential release on Systematic and it’s definitely a special one, as the idea, and especially the melody on this track, has arisen from the feelings of a dream Raphaël had one night! Marc Romboy from Systematic says: "A skilift upstairs the sleeping city" is one of the most emotional records I have heart for a while. I always play this outstanding piece of music as a closing track of my sets. People always ask me what it is and I’m very proud that I could sign this cool masterpiece on my label!"

Review: Following some amazing outings for the likes of Planet E and Wagon Repair, Ripperton now returns to Connaisseur with two outstanding club tunes. He starts with "Tainted Words", a killer club hymn which gets a Detroitish reworking from Berlin wunderkind Plasmik. "Farra" closes out on a deep, emotional tip. Brilliant.

Review: Another floor shaker. A pure Swiss product, Ripperton teams up with Agnes. Ripperton is already known for his project, Lazy Fat People, while Agnes is responsible for numerous critically acclaimed releases. They met at a party in Geneva, where both were invited to DJ, and the two danced as much behind the decks as the crowd did on the floor. The two thought they could have just as much fun in the studio, and that's exactly what happened.

  3. Carlos Nilmmns/Niko Mark - "Dark Ages" (5:22)
Review: Swiss deep house hero Ripperton leads the way on this split 12" from Character. "I'm Gonna Make You Love" is trippy, dreamy and epic deep house smothered in layers of mesmerising strings and pads and some soulful male house vocals. Detroit legend Niko Marks is back too it seems; he's teamed up with Carlos Nillmns on "The Night Not To End" featuring the the thought provoking spoken word poetry of Keter Darker (the new Gil Scott Heron some Chicagoans say!) over a seriously dusty deep house jam. They also offer us "Dark Ages" which goes for the classic, late nineties filtered disco house vibe.. and done damn well!

10A (12")
Cat: LIEBE 015. Rel: 20 Feb 07
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ripperton - "10A"
  2. Lars Behrenroth - "Organism"
Review: Lars Behrenroth is a house producer who relocated from Hamburg to Los Angeles a few years ago. While still in Germany, Behrenroth was busy producing mainly deep house. "Organism" can definitely be classified as house, but not in that jazzy, musical kind of way. It rather lingers at the crossroads of recent Ibadan releases, Ame and Carl Craig. The track grandly and slowly glides towards a synth heavy climax, which will leave many dancefloors breathless.

Ripperton is a member of Lazy Fat People. With its precisely programmed beats generally inclined to melancholy and huge, emotional moments on the floor, "10A" continues to coin a sound which journalists recently tried to grasp as 'minimal trance'. Ripperton remains a true master of this genre. Considering the atmosphere of the track, this will open many hearts on a dancefloor near you.

Long Distance
Cat: NUMLTD 02. Rel: 10 Aug 06
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Ripperton - "Long Distance"
  2. Ripperton & She DJ Masaya - "I Love..."
Review: After a successful 1st release signed by the unknown Nope and remixed by further unknown techno activists, Num Records Limited is back with a superb two tracker. This time the man responsible of this after hour's riot is none other than Ripperton. Ripperton, by the way of lazy fat people, has recently released on Connaisseur recordings and on Border Community. The gentleman is now giving a sparkling show at the Num crew with a brilliant, modern and airy minimal techno EP that will make the hardest unbelievers talk to you with deep faith about it. None the less, the second track presents collaborative work co-signed by Ripperton and the up and growing she DJ Masaya. "Long Distance" (w&p by Ripperton) dubbed as it has to be, sparkling as it has been said before and well, deep deep deep. A sweet and delicate track that just keeps it on and on. One of these Italian deserts that you know you shouldn't have. To hell with it! It's just so good "I Love" (w&p by Ripperton & She DJ Masaya) feels like endless summer, it's warm and sunny. This track is the perfect example of what tight production can render, mixed up with soul and devotion. Ripperton and Masaya are giving us here all the best ingredient, first of all, dub. The whole beat reminds of dancing for countless hours to old Basic Channel records. House is present here as well, swinging hihat's and never forgiving claps and bass lines. Clever, groovy, warm and sunny.
